  • I have recently purchased the Z7 11 and Z 2X Teleconverter for the 70-200mm F2.8S zoom and have a review and opinion on both, with pictures and detailed overview of it`s advantages and failings.

Excellent! Very good to hear about the quality remaining the same

Thanks for a nice video, Mark. I now have the Z 70-200mm f/2.8 and the 2.0 TC (used with Z7), so I was very interested in your analysis. I drew the same conclusions: the 2.0 teleconverter is amazingly sharp and DOES NOT degrade the sharpness when compared with the 70-200 without the TC. I also compared the 70-200 + TC with the Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 f-mount + FTZ adapter. Again, I think the 70-200 with the 2.0 TC equals or exceeds the sharpness of the 200-500 at comparable magnification. I also stumbled on the autofocus range switch, but once you figure it out you never make that mistake again. Thanks again.

Thank you Mark ..Excellent ..I own the Z7 and am getting the 70-200 soon and trading up to the Z7 II so you have confirmed my choice with the camera , Lens and convertor

Thanks for this. I aspire to the new Z-mount 70-200 and TC. However, I'll have to sell my F-mount equivalents.
I own 2 Z6 bodies which are excellent for video and not too shabby for stills. I recently bought a Ninja V, a great addition to the Z6s for video. Before I sell my last DSLR (D800) I think I'll want to get a Z7II.

I am very pleased that you have had great success with the 2x Z teleconverter. I own the 70-200 2.8 s lens and I am going to purchase this teleconverter. I agree with you about these heavy, bulky telephoto lenses. I have paid my dues with them and I am ready for lighter, more compact and versatile options.

Great video and good explanation. Funny that people Say teleconverters are soft especially wide open yet the people that say that use them! I think like you said the problem isn't the teleconverters problem but more of a light problem, using a canon 500mm lens at F7.1 then going to F14 with a 2x tele you should be grateful the camera can even auto focus at that! Im using a 1.4x tele with my Sony 200-600mm lens and now im at F9. The only problems I have with the tele are problems I would have without the tele if I simply set my aperture to F9... I don't think you could blame the tele. Yes more glass means less image quality most of the time, but were only talking slight differences.

Great video Mark. My new Z 7ii is arriving tomorrow. I just wish (I'm in the U.S.) I could get a Teleconverter some time soon.
My main complaint with Nikon is that their stuff is currently scarcely available to buy here.

Great that you will have your Z7 11 soon the new firmware updates have improved the eye detect alot so you should be impressed.

Use the eye autofocus in the small wide mode. The eye focus will limit itself to the area of the red box and is easy to control.

Thank you Mark. This was a terrific and informative review. I like your idea of the 2X converter on the new Z, 70-200 f2.8 lens. Very interesting and it's a great idea. I do have the F mount, 200-400 f4, VRII lens, that I rarely use. You are 100% correct, it is big and heavy, but it is a great, sharp lens.
I am imoressed how forgiving you are with Nikon having released the camera with video auto focusing issues. I only hope Nikon corrcets the problem ASAP with firmware updates. 👍 Your lighting advise is greatly appreciated as well. I have many SB910 flashed, but not 8 of them. 😳 That great for you, you have some system set-up for flash photography. 😊 It was a very interesting and thorough review. I would like your opinion on the many auto focusing modes for still photography, both of people and wildlife. Please let me hear your thoughts. Thank you again. 😃 👏

The eye detect is good, as long as you are quite close to the subject, filling the frame with their face. But truly, I simply use single point small, for all my portraits and wildlife as I like the fact I chose exactly where I focus, and don`t leave it to a program to decide for me. And I am forgiving to Nikon as I know there history of having absolutely no interest in video, hence they have never made a specific video only camera. So they are playing catch up doing the best they can on a dedicated Photo background. I have also seen the improvements in the first gen Z cameras with there firmware updates so I am very sure they will get it right eventually.

one other feature about the lens you may not be familiar with is the tripod foot has a knob and a catch, which allow the foot (rectangular portion) to be detached for storing the lens, and as you put it on the table, allow it to lie flat, on the cameras' base. this also allows the tripod foot to stay on the tripod head, and use this feature as a quick disconnect from the tripod head, in cases where the tripod head is not equipped with a quick disconnect plate ( ie is an old manfrotto, etc, which uses a screw on the fixed camera base); thus allowing you to carry the tripod externally on a backpack, while ensuring the safety of the lens ( inside the bag, not dangling dangerously from the tripod head).

If you have the 400mm f4.5 it would give you a 800mm f9 for the money might be a interesting option for the long reach although a little dark if the light is low.

Excellent review! Is there anywhere online to see your 400mm photos online compared to the 2x extender? They went by quickly on UA-cam. Perhaps sample photos to download to see quality? Is the bokeh the same w the 2x at 200 mm and 400mm? Thanks! I’d also love to see a video how you setup SnapBridge and set it up w your phone stop the camera. Great review!👍

In movie menu, set blocked shot response to 5 (delayed). This way when something intercepts your subject, af won't wander right away

Thanks for the tip, you are right that does help in a situation when things are getting in front of the subject So yes a great recommendation. However my issues were with recording a slow moving subject and also with the subject stationary, at F1.8 with the 35mm and 50mm S prime lenses and having no distracting objects, and still the focusing going on and off at will, This test recordings were done using the Human face/eye detect and with highly controlled in a studio environment with fabulous lighting "watch the video of Tessa dance in the white studio" uploaded a couple of days ago, I was using both cameras that day but could only keep the footage from the Z7 original. The wide area selected subject tracking that the original Z7 has works fine it`s the Z7 11`s Face/eye detect option that was disappointing.

@@MarkHummerNikonZ9 I don't record movies, but have set g4 (af speed) at +5 (fastest), and g5 (af tracking sensitivity) at 1 (high). Check Hudson Henry Photography, how he uses particular modes. The size of subject also plays big role in suitable movie modes. Z system is very complex, it takes a lot of experimenting to figure out, what works best in different scenarios. AF-F is the mode that gets best results in general in his experience.

@@eldindokara7868 If it were the settings that were my problem the Z7 would have been a fail too as both cameras run identical settings however the z7 worked great and the Z711 was the only fail.

PS: a converter HAS glass inside, an 'extender' (full name, extension tube), DOES NOT, it extends the CLOSE FOCUS range, NOT; as the tele-converter does: to magnify the image, in other words, to give a tele lens the apparent focal range of a bigger lens, without switching to a more expensive and weighty prime lens of the greater focal length, 500 mm for example.
An EXTENDER has NO loss of apparent aperture as there is no glass inside, which diminishes the amount of light energy collected at the sensor plane.

    Hey Mark,
Do the 70-200 really needs the collar for tripod?
Would it damage the mount if you were start using without it?

    • @MarkHummerNikonZ9
      @MarkHummerNikonZ9  3 роки тому

There is a screw thread 1/4 inch available under the collar mount if you don`t want it attached and yes it1s safe to use that if you wish. It`s a choice thing I personally prefer using the collar mount with a Manfrotto adapter attached for my Manfrotto ballheads.
