I really liked this episode. Fethry seems like a buffoon who's been away from other people for far too long but the writers did a great job of showing that, just because he's weird, he's not without talent or intelligence. He's a sweet guy with such a big heart that even killer plants won't hurt him and krill obey him when he sings (Fethry for Disney princess XD ). I'd like to see more of him.

He comes to me as autistic-coded (I'm autistic) which is even funnier considering the fact that he is compared to Huye who is the most considered autistic-coded in the show. It's just my perspective on the character as an autistic person, no one is forced into the same interpretation that I had.

I didn't know that Fethry is an unknown character in the US, I was actually surprised when you pointed this out. I grew up reading the most popular German Duck (and Mickey/Goofy) comic book series (I think I still have more than I hundred comic books stored away in my parent's house), called "Lustiges Taschenbuch", which consists of translated collections of Scandinavian and mostly (about 80%) Italian duck comic books, and occasional US-American (Carl Barks) and Dutch stories. If I remember correctly, Cousin Fethry featured very prominently in the Italian stories (translated from the Topolino libretto series). The portrayal here is pretty close to what I expected him to be like (at first I was confused because they made it look like he is a scientists, but after the reveal everything seemed to be alright). He is a clumsier and slightly less competent version of Donald (Donald is generally more competent and less clumsy in the comic books than in the TV shows) with a very eccentric personality. When Fethry and Donald are sent off on missions by Scrooge, both of them typically need the money/reward, because they both have really unstable work conditions and tend to be close to broke all the time. During these missions Fethry often service as the comic relief and annoys Donald, but Fethry also repeatedly saves the day in highly unusual/surprising manners. Fun fact: his German name is Dussel Duck, which means Duffer Duck, not really a flattering name.

In the Netherlands, Fethry appears pretty often, but he isn't nearly as popular over here compared to some other countries.
There is a bit of a history behind that.
In the Netherlands, the most popular source of Duck comics is our Donald Duck weekly magazine. In Donald Duck magazine, mostly Dutch stories are published and some Scandinavian stories with a similar style. The magazine also used to print American stories when they were still common. Fethry Duck is actually an American creation, but his stories were intended for publication outside American. That's how Fethry became popular in Europe.
In the Netherlands, he first appeared in Donald Duck magazine in 1964. He was a mainstay character for a while, but in the current day, he doesn't make appearances in the magazine at all. The 60s of Donald Duck magazine are nowadays considered to be the dark ages in the magazines history. They got out of the dark ages by putting a heavy emphasis on Barks' stories. They not only republished his stories, but also published his never before seen comics and even finished some comics he didn't fully complete. This move really worked out and since then, the magazine has always tried to stick close to Barks' stories and characters that he never or rarely used, don't appear in Dutch comics anymore, including Fethry. Scandinavian comics used to have a similar ban on Fethry in the past, but that has been lifted for quite a while.
It isn't all bad, though, because Fethry appears regularly in "Donald Duck Pocket", which is like the Dutch version of the Lustige Taschenbuch
. In the pocketbooks, pretty much only Italian comics are published, in which Fethry appears pretty often. He sometimes also appears in other publications, but still not nearly as often as in other countries.
Fethry is called Diederik Duck here, by the way. Diederik is a normal given name, kinda like Donald's.

@@Nasir3623 : As Kirgo said: the Lustiges Taschenbuch (LTB) also contains stories with Mickey Mouse as lead and other characters (Minni, Goofy, but also many different Duck characters). Additionally, there was the "Mickey Mouse Magazin(e)" when I grew up (not sure if it is still around), which had mainly stories about Mickey (mostly him as a detective, I think that was popular at that time), but also a strong focus on Huey, Dewey and Louie and their Junior Woodchuck adventures. I also came along with one collectable "toy", which ranged from individual pieces (decoder ring), to multipart items (to be collected over a couple of weeks) like a fancy compass with all accessories and even a series running for several years, always providing (I think 2-3) pages of the Junior Woodchuck guidebook (the complete one should be somewhere in a box in my parent's house). There were also additional Donald Duck stories in their one comic book (usually just one story of about 20-30 pages and 1 or 2 short stories of a couple of pages), mostly focusing on Donald's domestic life and adventures in Duckburg.
PS: I didn't live in Germany, but in Austria. Although most media (for linguistic reasons) was (and still is) imported from Germany, there are occasionally a few things that were not available or rare in Austria for whatever reasons, so I could missed something.

A fact I found interesting was that lewey and gladstone (the green ones) were similar and close and in this episode it showed huey and feathery (the red ones) are similar and close. Then you have dewey and donald (the blue ones) theyre close yes but not more so than the other kids and they seem to be opposites. Seem to be. In the finale of last season we saw another side of them. The angry, grudge holding Dewey (like donald was in the beginning) and the adventures confident donald (like dewey) and both were acting these ways to protect their family. It was really interesting to see and I hope they do more with it in the future. (Also, Dewey wearing a boating outfit like how donald wears a sailor outfit)

This actually makes good sense, but it also means that Dewey is actually Della's closest con after the episode "Raider of the Doomsday vault", where Della and Dewey had an adventure alone. Mothers are not supposed to have favorites, but Della is much closer to her blue shirt son in personality, like Huey is close to Feathry and Louie is to Gladstone in their family.

I actually loved the episode *because* it showed Peninha, as he is known in Brazil. He has a nephew of his own, Biquinho (Dugan in English), and a hippie girlfriend named Gloria .I really wish in the future they show more of his side of the Duckverse. His classic adventures with Donald would involve him and Donald as reporters for Scrooge's newspaper, so there's something they could do.
Also, it would be *amazing* to see a kind of Duckverse Avengers with Red Bat (Fethry super-heroic alter-ego), Darkwing Duck, Green Bat (José Carioca's alter ego), Supergoof, Gizmo Duck, the Red Wasp (the only one whose civil identity is never revealed) and of course, Donald as the Duck Avenger.

Hah, it's funny because I never really watched the original DuckTales except just very occasionally (I still can't remember why exactly because I do remember wanting to watch it more) so I didn't know about a lot of the DuckTales only characters before this revival, but Fethry was a familiar character for me since childhood. We mostly got the Italian comics in the form of these big paperbacks that my family used to buy for reading on summer trips, to keep us kids from getting bored on the road.
He didn't appear much in the weekly Duck comics magazine over here, so that's why I mentioned the paperbacks. That's how I got to know him and the other characters who are more popular in Italy.
In Finnish his name is Touho which I don't know how to translate but it means someone who's always busy doing things and not really thinking too much about what they're doing. My first impression of someone who's a "touho" is that they're a very exhausting person to be around. And as far as I remember that's exactly what he is. I never really liked him that much lol. I found him really annoying.

The, Launchpad going on side adventures we never see, thing- is a running gag. Not a plot that will actually be revealed. Lots of people just don't get the joke and think it's a lead in.
It's also a great device to get rid of Launchpad for the duration of the adventure, when he was only needed to get them there and then would distract from the the trio dynamic.

His previous lovers are getting closer; we don't see Ziyi in "Gander", but we see Oceanika from a distance. He doesn't bother to participate in "Gander" but he almost joins the boys in this episode. And so far, he only goes off on his own adventure in episodes involving Duck Cousins. There really seems to be a pattern leading up to something...

As long as we're still talking about the foreign comics: Both Fethry and John D. Rockerduck (who is going to be featured in a future Ducktales episode) are American creations. Fethry Duck was created by Dick Kinney and Al Hubbard while John D. Rockerduck was created by Carls Barks himself (the story's name is "Boat Buster" if you are interested). They were intended to be one-off characters in the American comics, but the Italian artists "adopted them" and expanded their quirks and personalities.
Don Rosa used John D Rockerduck in "Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" as "a tribute to Italian creators" without knowing that he was actually a Carl Barks creation! I am really looking forward to his episode as his personality never ceases to make me laugh in the stories we have here.

Fethery LOVES Donald, that's why I think he calls them Little Donalds. When he came back I was like: Oh. Launchpad. Oh! Yeah. Where were ya this time man?!

Good message, beautiful colours, I liked Fethery and his weirdness, the whole Huey/Dewey thing- What's better is that this next episode is Louie/Webby focused. I really love fethry in Norway he and donald are often spies and stuff. in norway we kall him Klodrik wich is a name that fits him perfectly since he is a klodrian (bungler) he is about three times as clumsy as donald! He is often messing up even the easiest tasks, though in his spy missions his clumsyness ends up saving the day. I think the reason Donald dislikes Fethry is because of the fact that although Fethry is clumsy and unlucky on the surface it acctually makes him kinda lucky unlike Donald where his clumsyness and unfortune often doesn’t lead to anything but disaster!

That's a very cool comment section here ! Everybody telling how Fethry is named in their country is awesome.
Here in France he is "Popop" and we had a lot of comics with him like everywhere else in Europe. I was very excited about how the show would introduce him, given that he was such a creation of his era: A radical beatnik. Even making Donald look rather"standard" compares to him.
And I was not disapointed ! It is such a fresh take on the character, basically keeping who he is, not changing the context, but making him older and see how he fits, how your goofy/hippy uncle from the 60/70's would fit with nephews from now and... It worked !
    I love this show

I remember having a small book compiling some old Donald comics, one of which included Fethry.
In the story he and Donald bought some magic trinkets/amulets that would bring good luck, and immediately afterwards, they win a raffle for a super advanced, modern, completely automated house of the future. They initially love it but then the house goes haywire on them when the amulets they bought fall into the main computer running the house and causes various malfunctions. The house eventually explodes and Donald goes apeshit on Fethry for convincing him to buy the amulet in the first place.

There are basically two Donald Comic universe. The first is the one that tries to stay faithful to Carl Barks and Don Rosa. The second is the mainly Italian universe, which includes many new characters and for some reason replaces Glomgold with Rockerduck. There is a lot of overlap between this universes and many Italian writers adhere more to the Barks and Rosa-verse.
I see Fethry as a quite vague character in the comic. He is very similar to Donald, just a bit more eccentric. Of course, Donald is quite different in the comics than he is in Ducktales. In the comics, both Fethry and Donald spend more time on get-rich-quick schemes than Indina Jones-like adventures.

    • @hreinnben7067
      @hreinnben7067 6 років тому

It isnt actually.Barks took characters from other artists and kept creating which most other did as well. Rosa is just this really conservative writer that only used barks characters which even Barks didnt follow as he took characters from other writers. The other writers kept creating new stories and ideas and as well sharing characters between each other. Fethry was created 1964 by an american writer called Dick Kenney. Italian, brazilian and danish writers have used him since.

@@hreinnben7067 Yes, there is. There are writers who mostly stick to the characters that Rosa liked to use, and then there are writers who embrace new characters and add their own. I'm really shocked in see that he wasn't popular in America. Here in Brazil his name is Peninha and was so famous here that he had his own comics. He had a super hero alter ego that was a Batman parody (Morcego Vermelho, Red Bat), a girlfriend named Gloria (a hippie and also had a super hero alter ego, Borboleta Púrpura, Purple Butterfly), a nephew named Biquinho, and more alter egos like Pena Kid (western), Pena das Selvas (Tarzan Parody) and many others, but these would actually be him creating comics. He also had his own book, Manual do Peninha, part of a series of books that teatched about a subject(inspired by the scooters one), and in his case, journalism due to the fact that he would often appear as a journalist that worked for A Patada, Scrooge's newspaper, along with Donald. Something to note about those cups that I don't think was obvious. They're styrofoam. As in, plastic with a bunch of tiny air bubbles to add insulation. Given the appearance, their scientist friend likely did what all the cool oceanographers do, and attached them to the outside of something that they were sending deep down in the ocean. The pressure of the water crushes the cup down, and forces all of the air out, and what you end up with is, well, what you saw in the video. So, they didn't so much "make" the cup as "do science at" the cup.
