What a beautiful pen ! To answer the lurking question, 1998 was the year that Giovanni purchased the (dormant since1975) Ancora company, and restated pen production for that brand. At the moment, I have 5 Santinis, and 2 Ancoras from his ownership. My only ebonite model is a Calypso, whose finish is part ebonite, part mother-of-pearl. I've used it daily and there is no trace on any ink staining on the section which is made from the blue ebonite rodstock. On the off chance no one has yet guessed, my only problem with Santini is Gear Acquisition Syndrome. My favorite nib grind is their version of cursive italic, the best I have ever used.
I just have to tell you that I fell in love with this pen when I saw your video. Luckily it is still available so I'm going to be getting one as a gift to myself! My husband even approves! LOL

Very nice review and very entertaining! :) Lovely pen! I picked up a Santini Italia Libra Cherry in Ebonite right after they reopened in May of last year. Remember Italy was hit hard by Covid early on in the Pandemic. I chose the stub nib and later had it further ground by Mark Bacas into more of an Italic. I love the pen. The ebonite material is stunning!!! I am seriously considering a Nonagon as that's what I wanted originally, but their production had but shut down for some months and I chose the Libra which was already in stock. Oh, and BTW, 1998 is the year that Giovanni Santini assumed control of Ancora.
@@ferociousnprettypens Sorry that kitty broke it, but your positive attitude about it all goes a long way. I'm sure you'll love the pen all over again once it's repaired. Oh, and one more convoluted Italian pen company tid bit ... Ancora bought the Omas name in 2018 and were to revive some of their pen model lines Not sure that'll ever happen now.
Excellent pens and I love mine but that ratcheting piston knob is a major design flaw. Delta used them but put a blind cap over it to prevent it from accidentally turning and pushing out ink. They should have resolved this issue like Delta did. If it were designed sensibly it would ratchet in the opposite direction so you could still tighten it down. A piston knob that can’t be tightened is crazy. Oh, shit does happen and a similar accident happed with my Yard-O-Led. Luckily they were able to make it right but I don’t use any of the really good ones where I have hardwood or tile anymore. Great video.
This is my first pen with a ratchet piston knob, and my pen has been back in Italy getting fixed, so I don't have experience with the it being an issue. Thanks for educating me. I'll have to keep an eye on it when it's back in my hands. ❤️
I have this pen and two other styles. I have had a 100% good results with their pens. While not inexpensive they make a good pen which has good value for what you get.
First time I've seen one of your reviews and it was nice. I want one of these pens ...thank you very much, I've learned a lot about Italian quality control.
It's gel polish combo. Gelish Black Cherry Red, and some cat eye polish on top for the cool glowy effect. Thank you for noticing. I've been going my own gels for a while now. Glad they don't look bad. 😂❤️
Wonderful Review! Thank you for sharing the experience. I have noticed you do use Sailor and Iroshizuku ink and was wondering if you have recommendations on Asian fountains, in particular, Sailor, Platinum, Pilot, Wancher and Nakaya. I tend to enjoy my Pilot, Platinum, Sailor pens a bit more than my Leonardo, Aurora, and Pelikan since I prefer Japanese fine sized nibs to write with.
I haven't taken a plunge into Nakaya (YET!...my wallet is quaking with fear!) but I believe their nibs are made by Platinum. So if you have 3776 and enjoy that nib size, you'll get a similar writing experience with the Nakaya. My Sailor collection is skewed towards the Pro Gear Slim, but have been recently getting into the Pro Gear. My MF Pro Gear nib is a little bit more juicy than my MF on the Slim. Now I want ALL the full Sized Pro Gears...but with the recent Sailor price increase, it's not as attractive. For the Pilot pens, I have mainly my Vanishing Points, and more economically friendly ones (Metros, and recently added Kakunos to the mix) - - I haven't delved into the Custom or Heritage lines because I haven't liked the colors they've released. Is there a specific pen you'd like to know more about? If I have it, I can do a "review".
@@ferociousnprettypens Many Thanks Newsha. I am currently on a quest for a good standard EDC (Not a fan of transporting $500+ fountain pens to work every day on public subway) but something special. My wish pen would be a Japanese F to MF Nib with an ebonite feed as most Asian pens tend to write dry (Pilot/Namiki seems to be the exception as they are definitely wetter than Platinum/Nakayas but a little wetter than Sailors in my experience. My Aurora is just a bit too Juicy even in Extra Fine 14K nib as I use my pens to take notes and need something which would dry a bit quicker and not smudge. Platinums, Sailors and even PenBBS have been my choice along with my new Leonardos XF Nibs (BTW, they clog up badly with Diamine Majestic Blue and its documented). Does any one know of a good 14K or SS Nib using an ebonite feed in an affordable fountain pen for work (US $250 or less). On a high note, My Osprey Madison and Osprey Milano have just arrived and can't wait to test them out. Thanks!
Santini are fantastic! I’ve had one for over a year now, will be adding more soon! Their customer service is top notch :) in regards to retailers, fontoplumo , at John’s pens stocks them :)
My first time viewing your channel. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I bought a Sandino Italia Libre Etna as my first plunge into a new pen manufacturer direct because it was around $350 US and was a piston filler, gold nib, ebonite feed pen. Where can you buy that for this price. It came very quickly and wrote well at first inking. That was 6 months ago and it still is writing very nicely. The resin is nice. I haven’t dropped it on a hard floor to see if the same thing happened that you experienced. I will be buying more in the future. Thanks for the background. Let us know what the significance of 1998 is.
Thank you for the lovely comment, Toby. And you are absolutely right about the price point. Now a days you can get a Sailor Pro Gear Slim for that price. Santini, IMO, is a much better value. For the 1998 significance, I pinned comment from Joel T, that explains the purchase of Ancora by Giovanni Santini. There's a lot of shenanigans with the Italian brands, and I may have this wrong, but I believe there were rumors that Giovanni was going to resurrect the Omas brand. And from what I can tell, it fell through, and in the last few years they rebranded Ancora to what is now Santini Italia. That's my story. And I'm stickin to it. 😉
great vid. beautiful pen. i've been on the fence about purchasing one of their pen. question..why do you put a piece of paper under your writing hand while you're writing?
I live in a really dry climate, so I use a lot of hand lotion - - it tends to get sucked up by the paper and ends up looking like the pens skips. Hope that makes sense.
I wonder if turn-free jerky is tasty? Perhaps it's organic?? Beautiful looking pen. It's on the list (sigh). That sound is a ratchet so the piston doesn't over turn. Delta has those on some of their pens. Why do these beautiful pens cost so much (grrrr), and why do I keep buying them then?
@@ferociousnprettypens Make sure it's low sodium. That stuff is loaded with sodium and preservatives, though turn-free must mean it is free of something. Ebonite is a pretty hard material with not much give to it. I think that the machining they did to the cap to fit the band and also the thread on the inside left that part of the cap pretty thin ( relative to the material, acrylic is much more forgiving).
