Go to the lyrics and think, when is he talking to someone else and when is he talking to himself. That is the brilliance of this - you'll see the type of vocal techniques are part of the emotion and the message. The complete synchronicity of this performance is outstanding and wasn't repeated on the album or the 6 or 7 times I've heard this performed live. My advice, grab your alcohol of choice, think of the worst love lost you have had in your life and sit back, reminisce and know that others feel your pain. A truly classic performance.

Oh man.... Lady, you really need to re-listen to this song with the lyrics in front of you. You are missing at least half the song if you aren't paying attention to the lyrics. It's a masterpiece in that area alone. Sometimes if seems as if people who listen to grunge or heavy metal just dismiss the lyrics and focus only on the sounds.

100% agree with you. Sadly a lot of "pros" forget about the most important thing, about how the song is supposed to make you feel, in this case the artist, specially when it meant so much to him. I've seen only 2 or 3 reactions who have appreciated Eddie's performance the way it should be appreciated. Check out 'The Fairy Voice Mother's reaction and also 'The charismatic voice' I like their technical take of it but also their interpretation n all that

Very well said!!! The lyrics are literally something else. It’s a story. A whole story. Of grief, love, loss, desperation. Listening to the lyrics is almost like watching a short movie. You can see things you’d imagine he has seen when writing this. And he FEELS it while singing it. 1000%. I like her opinion BUT she missed way too much on this one

Preforming live I think it’s pretty darn great compared to others which you really can’t. He has an a original sound. Met Eddie few years back, offered me a drink from his bottle of wine and from there who would of thought I’d be hanging with the band for the night. One night I’ll always remember. Same night I met up with Chris Cornell. He offered me a beer on his tour bus and I couldn’t tell you how down to earth these guys really are. Spoke about everything. Life in general. Oh yeah, Weirdest moment was when the it was time for goodbyes, I didn’t know how to ask for something like a picture with them so I really didn’t after spending such an awesome time with them all so what happened was they seen that I had my camera on me and Jeff Ament grabbed and said, “ you’re going to let a awesome concert night like this go by without pics?” 😂 man was I ever happy that he said that and took pics of everyone. So now those pics are on my walls today

I had friends in band, not up there with Pearl Jam and a bit older, but they played a lot of the music festivals in front of 80,000, and despite going with them when they toured, I could never bring myself to ask them for a Pic with them. I knew them pretty well and it just didn't seem like the thing you do with friends. I know I'm weird. Two of the band members died and the only Pic I ever got with me and them was sitting on a couch in the green room before a show. Traveling with them and meeting people they toured with in the 70s was enlightening to say the least. I could sit in a booth after the show and just listen to the stories they told and never say a word. Touring in a band to make a living is a different life, and those without some discipline don't make it.

It doesn't get much better than a young Eddie Vedder... He still is great now but this Unplugged sealed my lifelong interest and love for everything Pearl Jam...
I was thinking a left field suggestion like Love Boat Captain live at Madison Square Garden would show you how his voice evolved over 10 years...
Love the knowledge and enunciation, you obviously know your stuff!

Eddie's work with Pearl Jam is undeniable, and I LOVE it, however, it was the music that he wrote and performed for the Into The Wild soundtrack in 2007 that really made me appreciate his versatility both vocally and lyrically. The lyrics and music corresponded perfectly with each scene, but it was the way he used his vocal range to emphasize the emotional tone of the scene that impressed me the most. SO much so, that to this day, 15 years later, anytime I hear a song from the Into The Wild soundtrack, I immediately picture the scene and feel the same emotions that I felt the first time I saw it. I know this is all subjective cause it's based on my personal perspective and experience, but I figure most of the people on here are fans of Eddie and Pearl Jam.

The raw real feeling you hear is the personal meaning of the lyrics. I understand being a vocal coach you are only listening for the technical aspect, but Eddie Vedder has that covered and you totally missed any meaning to this. Vocal techniques and "tension" have a place, but lyrics do to.

    ‘Release Me’ by PJ.
When you hear it picture Eddie singing it for the first time during a large crowd. While he was growing up and he lived with his mom & dad a good friend of his parents would visit and Eddie would sit and shoot the bull until that friend of his family passed away it wasn’t long after that guy passed that Eddie’s mom told Ed that man was his Father.
So look for PJ’s 20th anniversary where the sound, the lyrics and emotions broke Eddie down.
Side note~> Mike McCreedy nails that song with his guitar playing.

You mentioned in one of your videos (can’t remember which one) that you love harmony/harmonizing. May I suggest you react to some Hanson? They are an incredibly talented and underrated band. Another suggestion is Pentatonix, another one of my favorites!

pretty weak reaction honestly, one of the weakest I've watched... She never talked about the lyrics and vocals and the meaning behind them, and how the pain and feeling came thru in his performance, especially when she paused in at 4:08 - ridiculous. First tell is she didn't have chills and tears as the song progressed. One of the best live performances of a song I've seen.

Strange how when someone is so focused on the technical aspect of his singing mechanics, they are unable to just sit back and get lost in the artist. Enter a flow state. And actually hear what hes saying. Kinda like when people watch a movie and point out acting instead of getting lost in the story.
