- Great commentary by John Motson. I miss the sound of those horns from major matches and tournaments from the 1980’s. Best game I’ve ever seen along with Brazil vs Italy 1982 WC.
to me, this game is clearly within the top-5 most intense, breathtaking and beautiful games I've seen in 45 years
I agree but then, think about it... any game that involves Portugal is certain to be a thriller !!

I remember this game and Mottys commentary vividly. I think he was almost as exhausted as the players by the end of it!
France 84 was a great tournament,won by a marvellous French team,this match was a blood and thunder epic,added to by a passionate and compelling commentary by John Motson.Amen.
This match is massively underrated in the Greatest Matches in Euro history.
In my opinion this match is the most epic in Euro Cup history. I like the one between Portugal and England in 2004 too, that one was f... dramatic and very well played by both teams.

No doubt. There may have been some others like the Spain 4 - Yugoslavia 3 in 2000, but that one was in the group stage, not in the semifinals, and I'm Spaniard.

Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the greatest matches I have ever witnessed. I was 10 years old at the time, and was in awe of this French team. What a team they had, with Platini, in my eyes, being the best footballer on the planet. Glorious stuff.
A match of perfection, brilliant commentary, brilliant drama, brilliant strips, the buzz of klaxons from the crowd, Adidas tangos, warm Mediterranean evening, end to end drama, great saves. John Motson sounded absolutely knackered at the end on the final goal.
My only criticism is , he says ‘ I’ve not seen a match like this in years ‘ - he did, Italy v Brazil in 82,,just two years before !!

Never forgot watching this as a 17 year old. One of the greatest games ever, John Motson in the build up to Platinis goal is sheer legend.

Wonderfull goals...Top class players from both teams (Bento, Joao Pinto, Chalana, Jordao, Nene', Fernando Gomes, Jaime Pacheco, Frasco...for PORTUGAL. Platini, L. Blanc, Giresse, Tigana, Fernandez, Domergue, Didier Six...for FRANCE ). Anyone team would win in the very end. Or better : no one did deserve loose... After all,it was not the Demi-Final but yes,the true FINAL from the EURO84. A real Hymn to the Football. Who was then the big stars? CHALANA and MICHEL PLATINI !!! What an unbelievable night in Velodrome - Marseille...Thank you glorious FRANCE and PORTUGAL. That's why millions love football.

As a young man, here in Oztralia in the 80's, Euro didn't exist until a good old mate of mine said "Gaz, check this out". His brother in England had posted him the BBC 1 hour highlights of the semi on good old VHS. Woah. Life changing game for me. Remember, back then, no internet etc. This was real football.

Found this video while searching for Chalana, the "Pequeno Genial" from Portugal, who sadly passed away yesterday, 10/08/2022, at the age of 63 due to Alzheimer's. What a game this must have been, as I was only 10 and can't remember! I've got to say that France had probably one of the best teams ever - the ability of that midfield was impressive! Both Chalana and Bento (Portuguese goalkeeper) lived about 3 miles from where I lived, and they were both very humble people, according to my father, who knew both.

This game had everything! Passion, skill, drama. You name it this game had it. I will always remember Portuguese winger Fernando Chalana in this tournament. He was amazing and even though Platini scored a bagful of goals in the Championships, Chalana for me was player of the tournament.

Heartbreaking for the Portuguese, look at the poor chap hang onto the side netting as Platini scores the winner. Strained absolutely everything in desperation to prevent it. What a display (to a man) they all put on. Incredible intensity to this match!
That French midfield complimented each other perfectly. Possibly the best midfield ever assembled.

Legendary match. I was 8 but still can remember. So glad to see those greats again (Platini first and foremost, Giresse, Tigana, Fernandez, Bats - i am a GK). Portuguese Bento played the match of his life, Chalana was a genius, Jordao scored with his eyes shut...(called "vieille chaussette" in french / old sock)... Way before Thuram a full back scored 2 gaols out of nowhere...Then fernandez, then Tigana, Platiniiiiiiiii Legendary. And the English commentaries are absolutely awesome!
This match also shows how easy it can be to create chances at football. Passes, movement, simplicity, big heart.
I was 17 and this was one of the best games I saw until that time (being a portuguess it was sweet and bitter for me)

I remember this game very well from Euro 84.A magnificent game of football. I remember Tigana's driving run past several defenders and cross to Platini to score the winner and spark wild celebrations. The Portuguese were a fine side and could easily have won the game if Nene had netted when they were 2-1 up. Great memories
I remember this game very well...like it was yesterday!
What a great match we (Portuguese) did against the super France team, Platini, Giresse, Tigana, Batts....but we could have won it with a little luck onour side, but the French were better...i cried...was 14 years old...and it was the first time i saw my National team in a big competiton like the Euro.
But our Genius Chalana passed away today at the age of 63, suffering from Alzheimer...today is a sad day for all the fans of Football, special to the Benfica fans, like myself.

Watched this game as a 9 year old and still one of the best I've ever seen.Fabulous tournament Euro 84, despite the absence of my own country.
This game was very important for Portuguese football and for Portugal as a nation back in the 80's. We're a poor country, going trough a severe economic crisis and many of our fellow citizens we're immigrants in France, facing discrimination and taking jobs French people didn' t want. This helped to regain some proud in ourselves.

I can remember watching this Euro Championship. France had a great team and deseved to win it and go on the win the trophy.

I remember watching this game as a 9 yr old, and it’s still the best game I ever saw, the commentary was brilliant, and as you mentioned, the commentary sounds so much better, half snowy, and the fans are a lot louder , the commentary nowadays, they just talk over games, opinions, I mean 3 of them now waffling on, we just need the commentary to tell us who’s who, like motson and we have a football brain to figure out what’s going on... !!

I was 11 at the time, watched it with my Granny and Granda, an amazing shared transcendent experience. The noise, the heat, the exhaustion, the ecstasy and heartbreak.
I was 7 then and I vividly remember being a huge fan of Manuel Bento in the 80's, though I can't have seen him too many times. I think this match might have been the reason.
I just don't recall France dominating so much in normal time, was interesting to see, I always remembered it was a great game

I agree partially, because I consider England 66, Mexico 70, Germany 74 and Italy 90 also great, great world cups. Globalization eliminated nationalisms, boundaries, differences and World Cups have lost emotion in the 21st century. I prefer living in 2018, but World Cups back then where full of emotions.

i was a mere 14 years of age at time and i remember the non ending drama i was on edge of seat. that french team played some classic games Germany in 82 this game and another favorite of mine Brazil in mexico 1986.

It's football : Hungary was defeated by Germany in 1954 with their best team ever, the same with the Netherlands 20 years after, Portugal couldn't win any trophy with great players like Figo, Rui Costa, Nuno Gomes, Deco, Couto and Victor Baia and did it with their worst team in 20 years, Belgium tries to win something with their present golden generation...

i remember well watching this match on tv back then in 1984 as 18 year old. Such A classic and memorable European Cup semi final. Both team were superb. Both keepers, Joel Bat for france and Bento for Portugal were at their best. The france quartet. in Fernandez, tigana, girresse and their captain platini gave an unbelieveable performances. The game ended with France won 3-2, thanks to a last minute goal in the second half extra time, through who else , Michel Platini who became the tournament top scorer.

What a match to have been able to witness if you were alive at the time. And Motson just made it even better!
The commentary was so exciting by John Motson. When Platini got the winner, the explosion in Motsons voice was like he'd just witnessed the greatest thing that has ever happened in the history of the world.
The greatest match I've seen apart from Brazil V Italy 1982. The great Michel Platini almost won this tournament on his own for France with 9 goals. They had not one good striker that year so he was obliged not only to organise play in midfield but to get himself further enough upfield to score. A superior player to Maradona I'm afraid, to all you out there wearing blue and white striped blinkers. Michel could do the lot - left foot, right football, penalties, headers, direct free kicks, thread balls through and score from open play. I've never seen Meadowlark Lemon from Beunos Aires score a penalty, header or a free kick. Is he still going to Narcotics Anonymous?
New generation do not know how big maestro Platini was. Diego Maradona though was better, and arguably the best player ever.

Platini’s winning goal seemed easy but in fact it was the hardest to convert ; firstly getting into the predicted position , facing 3 defenders, 1 goalkeeper , Dying minutes in extra time; in front of the home crowd , the leader carrying the home crowd favourite ... not many players; even the great ones , can handle it so calmly , putting it into the top of the net juz under the bar..
