Ben, the reason most of the characters randomly don't wear space helmets is that a big part of this takes place on the Blue Side of the Moon, which has oxygen because... reasons...
Oddly enough, this is the one time I believe an event deserved tie-ins. And the great thing is a lot of them actually worked really well. I respect that.
Watching this made me realize how much I miss Classic Nick Fury. I kinda liked having both of them around albeit in separate universes. I know Classic Nick pops up every once in a while, but its not the same vibe.
17:40 The description of the (no longer) living planet kills me. I also love the table decorations for this episode. Also, at 20:07 Sal basically describes Tommy Lee Jones from Men in Black. Bought trades since I started watching Back Issues: 12
The one question on everyones mind in the Marvel universe is "Why do we Have SWORD again?" They are bad at there job to begin with now you throw this on top of everything.
The point Ethan brings up about Nick Fury's pre-emptive strikes against potential threats sounds a whole lot like that sci-fi movie with Tom Cruise, Minority Report.
I love episodes like these where you guys get into the philosophy of the comics and actually deconstruct the subject matter of whatever is being discussed.
So Fury was the Man on the Wall dating back to when Spidey first came along? So meaning that at no point in Marvel's history, have we ever seen the real Nick Fury, including his own solo stories?
I have to correct you on one thing. The things that Fury killed were not greater threats than Galactus or Thanos, they were just threats that he could take down. Guys like Thanos and Galactus are beyond his ability to handle which is why they got through.
I think Ethan's shirt might hint at the right answer, here: Nick Fury is simultaneously right and wrong, because we can't know the true effect of his actions until we gain multiversal omniscience or (the cooler option) can perfect time travel. If he kills the next Hitler as a baby, he's a hero--but only in a sort of karmic sense. Without the ability to see the full tapestry of possibility, he's just a guy who shot a baby and is, therefore, a monster. The problem, of course, comes from the fact that Fury (and presumably his benefactors) isn't omniscient, making the question a matter of moral absolutes rather than of morality: is it okay to ALWAYS act on predictions and possibilities (rather than to just react to evidence or enemy actions) to keep your people safe? I'd say probably not...but, by not killing Spider-Man, clearly Fury doesn't ALWAYS do that. So, yes, he's still potentially a monster, but if Spider-Man had turned out to be Spider-Hitler (coming to an Incursion near you!) his lack of pre-emptive strike would have been the wrong call. Which, again, brings us back to Schrödinger's assassin. That said, I would have picked Emma Frost. Winter Soldier's obviously the better choice, but I think we're going to miss out on seeing how well droll commentary can keep the enemies of Earth at bay.
Just found you guys. Loved the back and forth commentary. Original Sin has been a favourite event of mine from Marvel. Can't wait to see the spill out from it.
***MY FAN THEORY*** Because Uatu broke his oath by preventing forces of nature like Galactus, he is considered an outcast by The Watcher Council so the whole Marvel Universe's Earth is considered an abomination by the Council and it shouldn't exist. Now there will be an even greater galactic threat that will right this wrong. The 'Sin' is Uatu's greed to WATCH by changing natural events, because all stories should end, and this reflect on comic readers lust for entertainment and wanting more stories even though every story has been made. The rift with Fury is because he's actually getting out there and doing something, representing comic readers who are getting off their asses and creating stories rather than just standing by an being entertained like Uatu comic readers.
Dang it! It's too bad that the comic book stories I find the most intriguing after getting them spoiled are ones that I might never have read in the first place, hence me not hesitating to watch this and spoil myself... Oh well, I guess I'll pick up the trade paperback of Original Sin now and read about it all myself!
As for his near-killing Spider-Man, if fury had shot spider man, venom, carnage and all their offspring wouldn't exist the way they do, so while fury couldn't have known that, you might be able to justify that act.
great review! i loved reading that story. great weaving of the whodunit mystery and the way he shut down thor was the biggest payoff for me. hell we still don't know what he whispered to him. great job guys. i think fury was justified in stopping legitimate threats but not potential ones, which stumbles somewhat into minority report/ pre-crime territory and that's just morally complex amongst other things.
great explanation and analysis guys keep up great work, original sin ended up being a solid event but there was that expectation it could of been something more epic.
I would say that Nick Fury is right in the sense that there needs to be a "Man On The Wall" but it probably should be someone who is superpowered like Emma Frost so they can avoid the moral dilemma of if they are right.
one of the thing with nick being the man on the wall was that if a threat was dangerous enough and had to be put down nick furry got his hands dirty so that our heros wouldnt and would never have to sort of
Awesome episode. I would love it if you or Rob did X-men: X tinction Agenda. I got in to comics right at the end of that run and I still remember how cool it was whan Gambit freed himself having both his hands and feet shackled while hanging upside down.
I think comparing Nick Fury to the justice system in the respect that it's better to have a terrible system than nothing at all is a poor argument solely because how they operate is completely different. Nick Fury acts as judge, jury and executioner whereas with the justice system for all it's faults at the very least has due process in the form of trials and the right of representation at said trails before a verdict is rendered.
I think Nick _was_ justified, but his loss of restraint as he aged ruined any good intention or effect he had. Becoming too complacent with murder as his go to fix for anything, just became a lazy old man really. Bucky should be the right mix of Cap and Nick to walk the fine line of cosmic level pre-emptive strikes. And who hummed the transformers theme?
I'll have to look in on MarvelExplained and Comicstorian to confirm this, but if the explanation for the "Original Sin" title wasn't explained in the series, then I have a theory. I think The Original Sin is MURDER! Cain killed Abel possibly because he was jealous of Abel for providing the favored sacrifice to God (killing a first-born lamb from his flock vs. Cain's sacrificing his first harvest from his section of The Garden of Eden). Using that metaphor, Fury could be Cain in that he felt that he was justified in his position as The Man on the Wall while Uatu the Watcher felt, along with the other Watchers including his father Ikor, that he was paying penance for being responsible for the wiping out of an alien race by giving them the "gift" of atomic energy that they used as destructive weapons for their own pre-emptive strikes first against each other and later neighboring star systems. Incidentally, I was a little disappointed that the writers of this "flashback" didn't tell the original ending where a few members of the alien race survived and one of them told the Watchers "It was YOUR fault that we were given atomic power before we were ready to receive it. May you and your race be cursed for the rest of your days!" It added more impact to the story and prompted Ikor's feelings of guilt over what the Watchers did. Another great installment. Especially liked The Morality Debate. My response would be no, Nick acting as judge, jury and executioner is just as wrong as Frank Castle doing it to gangsters without due process. Worse than Castle's vigilantism in fact because Nick's passing judgment on entire races as well as untested individuals without proper examination of the facts. Basically I would say "Hey Nick! Who died and made YOU God?"
Pretty nice video once again. But kind of lost on when this happen. Because if in original sin Thor lose his power and will be replaced by Female Thor, then how can he still has his power in the current avengers/new avengers hickman story line...It can't happen before because Female thor is not here in Hickman run and it can't happen after because Captain america, Strange and Tchalla are not punching each other... And nice t-shirt Ethan !
dragonmares59110 Oh yeah there is no cohesion when it comes to the timeframe of these events. Normally it's permissible, but this year's been really problematic.
So this was the moral ambiguity that Civil war missed out on while lacking the just sheer intensity. Also Ben subconsciously suggested Cable to be the man on the wall when he said they should be from the Future.
its actually implied that the effects of the eyes slowly spread across the world and i think the galaxy cause thanos some how finds out he has a inhuman son
Great Channel! I've read all the issues of this arc, but I noticed Rob and yourself refer to Nick Fury as the man on the wall. Is Fury addressed as such in Original Sin? I can't seem to remember haha
I actually really enjoyed Original Sin. I thought that what they did with Nick Fury was fantastic. It's a shame you guys didn't touch on what the Original Sin was. The whole thread going back to The Watcher and his people and how his father thought they should intervene in peoples affairs. Thinking they would make their lives better. And the one time that The Watchers did do this by giving a alien race tech they ended up killing each other. And from that point on The Watchers as a race decided to stay out of peoples affairs. And how The Watcher himself was so conflicted with what happened with the alien race and it crushed him to see that his father was "wrong" in bettering people. So yeah I thought you guys did a great job.
Kinda bs if you ask me. "Well this one time we tried to do the right thing and it turned to shit so now instead of trying to do a better job in future, we will instead do nothing."
I prefer Black Nick Fury more, but I really still like the attitude and nature of the previous one. So I could understand why one might want the 2 Nick Fury's in one Universe.
Great job all around to you and your fellow weekly pull cast on the Original Sin videos. Just one question for you Sal, when you spoke of Cap. and the rest getting together for steak was that their "meet" night or "meat" night??? Rim shot sound effect should be included.
THIS- Should have been what they based the "Secret Wars" series on. They should have implied there were more "Hunting Spiderman" type things that he went through with. It should have been more focused on the Earth itself, or his reasons for letting only certain parts of space do what they've done for larger/more nefarious/unknown reasons. Does anyone know if they elaborated, or added/retconned more after this? OR the real Fury becomes, basically, a villain and destroys his bosses and goes rogue. You could sacrifice one of the more disappointing secrets with knowledge tied directly to Nick Fury mind-wiping one of the heroes after they learned too much once.
Really liking the channel guys, good moral discussion as well. From your discussion, I think there are points on both sides, but Fury went too far. The spider-man thing shows the kind of people that may have been lost even if he made one mistake. I haven't read too much Marvel stuff yet, but I've been getting more into it. Would you guys consider doing a video on the Illuminati? I've wondered why they made a superhero group named after an evil conspiratorial organization. But from what I've seen they definitely do things that are morally ambiguous to say the least. What do they do and what are the different views on them in the Marvel world?
So the original watcher is dead. Well as dead one can be in a comic. Nick Fury always seemed to do this shady shit for the good of the public though it seems his responsibilities seem to expand every time something gets revealed. Tangent - Antman movie is so weird from what I read. Scott Lang is the main character while Pym is a mentor. Which I guess is better since Pym is sort of a crazy wife beating maniac.
I remember being annoyed at what this revealed for Spider-Man. Instead of using this as the thing that undoes One More Day and the deal with the devil that Peter made there they instead make up another Spider-Woman "Silk" who has the same powers as Spider-Man and was literally bitten by the same spider seconds after and has been hidden ever since because blargh.
MrAdvil X According to the marvel wiki, there are two orbs; the one you are talking about is Drake Shannon marvel.wikia.com/Drake_Shannon_%28Earth-616%29 And he was disfiguered and wears a mask. But the one in Original Sin, is this one marvel.wikia.com/Orb_%28Zadkiel_agent%29_%28Earth-616%29 who basically has an eye for a head
Wait. You said that it is punishing the people who corrupted it, but that doesn't explain The Orb. He was being seen by The Watcher and he wanted to visit the Watcher because he thought that he was meant to go and see him. Was The Orb not supposed to see Uatu? Can someone explain?
Hi Sal, another great video! Does the story explain how Fury accessed the Astral Plane? Is it another of Xavier's little secrets? Surely Nick would just get destroyed by any astral threat without a big gun like Chuck?
Yes fury is justified. Some things need to be done in order for the greater good. The heroes are the ones to take the moral high ground and at times mistakes happen that cost lives. If fury takes the moral high ground not only some people die, but the planet could be destroyed.
I know you guys about why Bucky was the best choice for Marvel to choose, here and on the podcast (revitalizing the character and everything) but I still would have loved to see the punisher. He litterally would not give a crap in who killed, which seems to be a large component of being the man on the wall. Though im still really happy to see Bucky actaually having a purpose again. YOu know what I think would be awesome (love to hear your opinon on this) would be if Marvel had the Punisher and Bucky be the man on the wall. I think they could have easily made that work by saying, :look how bad Fury was getting as he got older, it was because no one was there to check him. We'll have the Punisher and Bucky, who are both morrally ambigious, but Bucky they can check the other person when it seems like they go too far" I think that would have been an awesome way to do it and it would make two cool characters relevant again in the Marvel Universe.
TheIceman101418 Seeing Bucky and Castle reluctantly team up to defend the planet would make for a really cool mini. I'm not sure if Frank cares enough about humanity, though.
Was Fury justified? I think its more of the fact that he left it up to himself. No ONE man can make those kind of decisions where the ramifications include the entire population. Plus I want to know more about the first guy who handed fury the job. Who put him up to it?
**MY FAN THEORY** This is farfetched but because Uatu interferes, probably even more than we know, what if all the Marvel alternate realities exist because of Uatu, even the "What if..." realities. What if, Ultimate Universe's Nick Fury is just an older version of the Black 616 Nick Fury sent there to do recon on the effects of Uatu's reality creating interference.
Bucky died in Fear Itself (Which you should do btw, after WWH tho) so how the fuck did he come back this time?! I've read all the way up to Infinity and nothing explains him coming back. Technically they didn't explain Thor coming back either. I miss recaps in comic books.
Fury whispers: you should have gone for the head
Thor: drops hammer
Ben, the reason most of the characters randomly don't wear space helmets is that a big part of this takes place on the Blue Side of the Moon, which has oxygen because... reasons...
Ylatch You know, I totally forgot about the Blue Side of the moon. I don't know why. Good call, Ylatch!
Thank you! I knew there had to be some sort of explanation, flimsy as it may be.
So in the Marvel Universe they divide the Moon into thirds?
@@damiencrowley5039 i dont even think its big enough to be a 3rd its like a little island i think
Oddly enough, this is the one time I believe an event deserved tie-ins. And the great thing is a lot of them actually worked really well. I respect that.
The Nick Fury decoys and the Spider clones should go to war against each other in the next major Marvel event.
SparkyPantsMcGee "Maximum Fury"
TVLittleHouse Coming next summer!
Ben's reaction to Nick Fury JR. is the greatest thing in the world.

Sal's description of this book is WAY better than the actual book.
I Agree Whole Heartedly.
Wrong. This event was cool. Kinda dumb ending but mostly good
I love how Exterminatrix can just hold Midas' hand, when the entire tragedy of Midas is that he killed his daughter just by touching her.
7 years later and I’m still watching this vid …such a great show 👍🏾 👍🏾
The Black Widow shower stuff with the Watcher watching had me dying! Lol! Good job guys! Please do Annhilation next.
The point Ethan brings up about Nick Fury's pre-emptive strikes against potential threats sounds a whole lot like that sci-fi movie with Tom Cruise, Minority Report.
You are correct sir!
ONmedz We did discuss MR a little bit, but I cut it out. It just didn't really go anywhere.
TVLittleHouse I'm sure when anyone talks about that movie, it never really goes anywhere. ;D
I love episodes like these where you guys get into the philosophy of the comics and actually deconstruct the subject matter of whatever is being discussed.
I love the concept of the show ! Nice idea to have Dante from Clerks explaining comic books to two guy.
MrFqke And I'm not even supposed to be here, today.
I don't know why all Rob and Benny's subs haven't found this channel yet. Keep up the good work. Great channel❗
JB Jones Thanks JB! They'll come... in time.
JB Jones I subscribe to all three! I just don't remember which one I subscribed to first.
David T. Smith yeah, I can't remember exactly who was first as well. I even subscribed to Dave's channel even though he forgot about it or something.
So Fury was the Man on the Wall dating back to when Spidey first came along? So meaning that at no point in Marvel's history, have we ever seen the real Nick Fury, including his own solo stories?
Nah, his Howling Commando Days are still him on the timeline
i love the philosophical debate at the end :) jeje
Thanks!
..........Fate Zero had the exact same plot...... Marvel actually did something better than Anime. OMG.
I want someone to write a What If story where Dr. Doom becomes the man on the wall.
He'd get bored.
I think how they handled the concept of the story more in uncanny x-force ... and apocalypse solution was a beast
I have to correct you on one thing. The things that Fury killed were not greater threats than Galactus or Thanos, they were just threats that he could take down. Guys like Thanos and Galactus are beyond his ability to handle which is why they got through.
bluhmer1990 plus I’m pretty sure there aren’t any greater threats then those two.
You guys made this comic event seem a whole lot more interesting than I was expecting. Up till now, I really didn't care who killed the Watcher.
Nick Fury's punishment is to "not being able to intervine", since he basicallh has the Watcher powers, but is chained to the moon, as the "unseen"
This is fascinating, thank you!
I Am Your Target Demographic Thanks! I love when my entire demographic enjoys our videos.
ComicPOP! Emma stone is cold? Yeah, I think I'll leave now
This video was fantastic and the last 10 or so minutes discussing the morality of the Man on the Wall was my favourite part.

Oh god! THE ORB HAS DEPTH PERCEPTION! _We're f*cked, now!_
Instead of spiderman almost being killed by Nick Fury, they should've shown Hank Pym when he was creating Ultron
You probably already saw a post like this, but just in case....
Can you talk about the Amalgam Universe on an episode of Back Issues?
Thanks for having notes and being prepared.
Always prepared, Tyler.
Also, the "blue are of the moon" has air, that's way they can walk around without helmets
This episode is a classic
I really like the moral dilemma this story brings up
great explanation and analysis guys keep up great work, original sin ended up being a solid event but there was that expectation it could of been something more epic.

I'm glad Ethan said spoilers, since he's the only one I listen to.

here is a crazy question, what was more deadly than the secretwars. what was the man on the wall fighting when doom destroys all of reality?

Earlier in the arc they use that terminology, I think. I'm certain I didn't come up with the term myself ;) Thanks for checking us out!
After hearing about the exploits of Nick Fury (Man on the wall version), Nick Fury Jr has to do some serious shit to live up to the hole left,
I want to know what Fury said to Thor, great video as always keep up the good work
Thorfan85 Me too! Thanks for the kindness.
Thorfan85 It's recently been received what Fury said to Thor. Basically: " The God Gutter was right, and you are a bitch."
you've got to be shitting me they really just wanted jane foster thor huh
Holy shit. Ethan's shirt is dope as fuck in this episode. I need to find one...
who remebers the fact nick furry also picked scott lane antman to possibly be the man on the wall
Wow. So this was cool. Kinda hard to go with one thing or the next but that being said I want to see some of the things Fury did.
Cool Wildstar t-shirt

transactguy That's what we like to hear!
TVLittleHouse same here. I was like which one...(2 seconds later) all of them
The Orb was an old Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider villain!
I think in the MCU Fury is already the Watcher on the wall and Secret Invasion is his sins coming back to him
THIS- Should have been what they based the "Secret Wars" series on.

best video so far

Would you guys consider doing a video on the Illuminati? I've wondered why they made a superhero group named after an evil conspiratorial organization. But from what I've seen they definitely do things that are morally ambiguous to say the least. What do they do and what are the different views on them in the Marvel world?
the job that nobody wants to do, still needs to be done by someone.....
"Is there a "Watcher Heaven?" .. .. Probably not.
Daredevil’s original sin is pretty amazing. So is hulk’s and Spider-Man’s.
You know the orb was in the ghost rider comic and was a stunt driver who face was disfigured and wore a eyeball helmet to mind control ppl
MrAdvil X That's what I thought too, isn't the "eye" a mask?
Robin Pardy yes its a mask unless something changed that i missed out on
MrAdvil X According to the marvel wiki, there are two orbs; the one you are talking about is Drake Shannon marvel.wikia.com/Drake_Shannon_%28Earth-616%29
And he was disfiguered and wears a mask.
But the one in Original Sin, is this one marvel.wikia.com/Orb_%28Zadkiel_agent%29_%28Earth-616%29 who basically has an eye for a head
Seems like sal doesn't know why some people are able to see the watcher
It doesn't seem like that. It's exactly that.
Wait. You said that it is punishing the people who corrupted it, but that doesn't explain The Orb. He was being seen by The Watcher and he wanted to visit the Watcher because he thought that he was meant to go and see him. Was The Orb not supposed to see Uatu? Can someone explain?
i KNEW the civil war II story sounded familiar!
Hi Sal, another great video! Does the story explain how Fury accessed the Astral Plane? Is it another of Xavier's little secrets? Surely Nick would just get destroyed by any astral threat without a big gun like Chuck?
23:20 Captain America had enough lol
This story is really fun honestly
What Dr. Strange and Punisher teams up! when does that happen?
Why isn't there more comics on Quentin Beck or bulls eye
Was Fury justified? I think its more of the fact that he left it up to himself. No ONE man can make those kind of decisions where the ramifications include the entire population. Plus I want to know more about the first guy who handed fury the job. Who put him up to it?
**MY FAN THEORY**
This is farfetched but because Uatu interferes, probably even more than we know, what if all the Marvel alternate realities exist because of Uatu, even the "What if..." realities. What if, Ultimate Universe's Nick Fury is just an older version of the Black 616 Nick Fury sent there to do recon on the effects of Uatu's reality creating interference.
nick furry was punished by the watchers and was sentenced to watch and never intervene in anyway
Bucky died in Fear Itself (Which you should do btw, after WWH tho) so how the fuck did he come back this time?! I've read all the way up to Infinity and nothing explains him coming back. Technically they didn't explain Thor coming back either. I miss recaps in comic books.
In FI, Bucky just looked like he died, and it was kind of a Dick Grayson situation.
5:14 hahahaha wow.
what was the point of this event again
Make Samuel L. Fury the Nick Fury of the 616 also Things! and Stuff!
