Tearful John Bercow reveals he will step down as Speaker by 31 October

- Опубліковано 8 вер 2019
- John Bercow has said he will stand down as the House of Commons Speaker, as well as an MP, before the end of next month. The colourful Speaker, famous for his bellowing cries of 'Order!' during raucous debates, will quit on 31 October, the same day Britain is due to leave the EU, unless an election is called before then. Throughout the three years since Britain voted to leave the EU, Bercow has angered the Conservative government by repeatedly allowing lawmakers to seize control of parliament's agenda to steer the course of Brexit. He said he was simply fulfilling his role of letting parliament have its say, adding that he had always 'sought to be the backbenchers' backstop'.

@@MichaelJ44 I seriously doubt if I will receive a qualified answer, but please explain to me following fact:
How can one deduce any sort of coherent national will out of an election that resulted in 48,11%
vs. 51,89%*?
* Keep in mind, that the entire result is skewed due to over 3 MILLION expats being denied a vote and even hardcore Brexiters wouldn't have dared to menation a No Deal Brexit at the time of the election.

Asking in poor faith. Thank you for confirming my stereotypes.
@@MichaelJ44 If the difference of a vote is only 4%... It's a bit rich to claim that "the will of the people" is an unambiguous endorsement for the winning side.
Any mature democracy should be very wary of majority tyranny, and strive to find a compromise that at least considers the concerns of the minority.
Mays deal was already quite far from that (by definition of her red lines, the negotiated result was a 'hard brexit').
Johnsons no-deal strategy is the extreme consequence of ignoring not just the remainers (48,11%), but also the mild leavers (who knows how many there were? It wasn't specified on the ballot).
And before you dismiss me as a remoaner... save it. I'm not. I'm not even from the UK. I respect your sovereignty and I think the consequence of the referendum should be that the UK leave the EU. To be honest, it was never going to work out, really (and remainers should accept that, too). The referendum only confirmed it.
But I do hope, for the sake of the many British friends I made over the years, that there is a sensible implication of that result in the end. Whatever way of leaving the EU, there will be need for some kind of deal for the future. There is no such thing as a 'clean break' from 40 years of economic integration.
I wish you all in the UK the best, including you, Michael.
Wow I can’t believe they killed off the best character so not watching brexit season 4 without him

Oh this is sooooo me. Brexit is entertainment for me lolll
it’s a disgrace that a lot of Conservatives don’t applaud for the speaker. They sunken so low they don’t even want to thank a party member for his 10year effort of being the speaker of the house. They only want a partisan speaker, not one that goes by the rules. It was the party that was closest to my believes, not anymore.
Made the rules up as he went along ! He should have gone years ago !!
John Regan Give me an example of when Bercow made the rules up as he went along.
John Regan He was elected in june 2017, so he shouldn’t and couldn’t have gone years ago. Your comment is ridiculous.
@Mac Macaulay How old are you then? You obviously don't remember Betty Boothroyd. She made Bercow look like a schoolboy!
@@RealConstructor He had been speaker for a decade. They re-elected him in 2017 because the speaker has to be voted in at the start of every new parliament.
When the opposition shows you more respect than your own party
Why do you think that is !!

Respect needs to be earned - and he hasn't done anything to earn it.

lol, if country goes before the party. Why is it that this clown has done everything to stop the brexit? which is the will of the brits people?
Neikosr0x I can understand him. For the start, less than 4% is a shitty majority to begin with. Second, I doubt the Leave option would win had they known how bad it would turn out.
In short, if I believed catastrophe was on its way, I would put my effort in stopping it instead of delivering it just because a 4% majority of people wanted to.
@@neikory his job is to facilitate a debate on motions parliament thinks it can win, not prop up an appointed PM who's own brother thinks is a prat and who backs a No Deal Brexit that no one voted for.

@@chrisa6212 "The problem with it all is that No Deal Brexit does not have a mandate.
I know that Brexiters have changed their tune so much that they now have put aside 99% of what the entire Leave side said in the Campaign, and the months after the Referendum, and have moved to the following position:
" It only said leave on the ballot paper. It never said how to leave. Therefore, No Deal Brexit is justified. "
It sounds Ok until you give the mirror image analogy.
Let us say 51.9% had voted to Remain.
Now imagine that after 3 years, we were destined towards the hardest Remain possible; joining the Euro and Schengen Zone with no further consultation of the public. Let's assume a Lib Dem government propped up by the SNP with a majority of 1, a Lib Dem PM, voted for by Lib Dem members after Vince Cable quits, proroguing Parliament in order to force our entry into the Euro and Schengen.
When atleast half the country is against this, maybe a quarter in complete uproar, they are told:
"The country voted Remain. Remain means Remain. What we are doing satisfies the condition of Remaining in the European Union."
When it is pointed out by many that nowhere in the campaign was it stated that joining the Euro and Schengen was part of the condition of Remaining, the response is that it doesn't matter, and that these people are just Brexmoaners, and are crying Brexmoaner tears, and are trying to stand in the way of the will of the British people.
Hopefully, this will give you some perspective of what is going on here."
