You are without a doubt the best golf instructor I have come across on the internet, so simple in your instruction but with great results. Keep up the videos . Seguto golf everyone !!!
I sincerely appreciate your kind words, and I'm very glad to know that my lesson content and teaching style are resonating with you and providing clarity and simplicity in the muddied, overly complicated, oft-conflicting realm of golf instruction.
Thanks so much for your message, testimonial, and support, and keep up the great work!! 💪💪
Tom
Best lesson, ever, Tom! Fantastic for us "older guys"! Thanks! Greg
My pleasure, Greg! I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, and I hope the drill contained therein performs well when you put it into practice!
Speaking of "older guys", I would be remiss if I didn't mention that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.
Have you looked into the comprehensive, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. The value in terms of what you get for the low price point is beyond comprehension, and based on proven results it represents by far the best golf instruction deal on the planet.
And if you'd like to first "dip a toe in the water" prior to diving into the school, then here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lesson and drill content, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that is delivering the referenced results.
One does not need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. I hope you'll give the school some thought.
Thanks!
Tom
I too just love the way tom teaches. My wife is a college professor and she has always said to keep things simple, just the way Tom teaches. You've changed my golf swing big time Tom; and for the much much better.

Good to see something on a short backswing. As someone who has ruptured both bicep tendons, lack of flexibility is something I’ve had to adjust to…thanks Tom.
My pleasure! I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, and now that you are armed with this knowledge I hope you are able to use it to the betterment of your game.
By the way, you may be interested to know that the swing system I teach is a proven body-friendly method. I can vouch for that through my own personal experience as a golfer who previously experienced back pain, and It is further validated by the fact that a significant percentage of my students and online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.
For example, the outward flaring of both feet 10-20 degrees in our setup facilitates the proper amount of body-friendly, free-flowing hip turn back and through. This is a major power source, and it also keeps the club traveling on the correct path. If you were to square your feet so that they were perpendicular to the target line, then your hips would be impeded from turning sufficiently in the backswing (which would then inhibit the shoulders from executing a full and effortless turn), and from releasing properly in the downswing to propel the club through the zone. Restricting this action can cause a variety of path issues and/or also place strain on the lower back, lead knee, and the hip joints as the hips will "want" to move laterally and turn through into the finish but will be fighting the body in the process.

I tried this technique today on the links in Kent. At first some mishits and some more later on…BUT when it worked ( and this is work in progress) it was amazing. The ball sped away and soared into the sky and down the fairway….although I ended up in some bunkers I had never seen before ! As a 70 year old this will the way forward for me and I’m spreading the word Tom.
Thank you.
That is FANTASTIC, Tim - Welcome to the wonderful world of crispy compression!! 💪💪 Now it's just a matter of ingraining it to build in that consistency.*

It's interesting that your video came out today. I actually started doing this short backswing last week with great results! I was initially just doing it as a drill for my full swing, but I was getting great sounding hits and launches, so I decided this was going to be my go-to swing, instead!
lol, me too! Last week, but based on other advice from this channel it felt right, if that makes sense
Same here! 😂
Fantastic! Nice job figuring that out on your own and putting it into play.
Thanks for validating this with your success and keep up the great work!! 💪💪
Tom
This is another great and perfectly timed video for me. I had been overswinging and lifting when my husband said 'shorten' your swing, and I had (notice 'had') my longest drives.. like 30 yds. Could not believe it.. so much so I started slipping back, overswinging topping and almost hit myself with my own ball!. Then as you are brilliantly confirming and demonstrating here, I shortened my swing again 2 days ago on a practice round .. experimented with one blah drive then focused on shortening it and went 27 yards further! Tom, thank you.. this after your other recent video on 'don't stand too close', .. keep straight arms elbows together with trail arm in' got me back to where I need to be. Robin
Fantastic! I'm glad to know that this video provided that reminder, Robin. (And by the way, your husband is a very wise man...😎)
Just like the baseball player who starts hitting homeruns with a nice, compact swing. It gets into his head and he starts swinging for the fences, and the next thing you know its a steady diet of strikeouts and pop flies. Until he shortens his swing again. Lather, rinse, repeat...
Anyway, provided the golfer establishes the critical connection points and structure at setup and has a foundation that facilitates a centered, free flowing motion, the key is to get to - but not go beyond - our body's natural stopping point. This is the point where if we were to try to go any further any or all of the following will occur:
1) the lead arm will bend and/or lift
2) the wrists will break down
3) the lead knee will kick inward towards the trail side
4) the lead shoulder will level out and lose its orientation towards the ball
5) weight will shift into the trail side and bring the low point back with it, resulting in inconsistent contact and unpredictable ball flight.
6) you'll "chicken wing" and/or flip through impact
7) pain, discomfort, and/or possible injury
8) Inconsistent contact and ball flight
We don't need to force ourselves to get to "parallel" with this swing, and fighting our body in an attempt to do so will result in some combination of the above issues. If we execute this swing properly we will have created width and plenty of distance for that club to travel by taking it in deep, and that enables us to then harness the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum".
I'm very glad to know my instruction is resonating with you. Keep up the fantastic work!!
Tom
This is just what I have been waiting for ! I am 81 next month and value your advice . Problem with me is hip turns , so will definitely try the armpit and right elbow advice
Superb video Thank you again
Fantastic! I'm very glad to know that this lesson aided in your understanding, Phil, and now that you are "armed" with this knowledge I hope you are able to use it to the betterment of your game.

Enjoy the beautiful weather that is supposedly on the way for the next several days, and be sure to stop by The PIT at least one of the next two Tuesday evenings from 6-9. My band has just two remaining gigs there to finish out the 2024 season, and we won't be back until next April!

@@SagutoGolf Will do. We love The Pit!
I’ve been having a little trouble likely getting too steep and hitting straight pulls. This lesson got my attention because it obviously keeps the swing plane down. I played today after a short warmup with this method and it made a huge improvement in accuracy. More fairways hit and some pretty crisp iron strikes. I still have a little work to do to fine tune it but I’m liking it so far.

You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. I hope you'll give the school some thought.

Very good tips Tom , thank you
My pleasure! I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, and now that you are armed with this knowledge I hope you are able to use it to the betterment of your game.
Tom
Hi Tom, once again thank you for the great content. I am truly seeing wonders since following your swing!
One problem I seem to have with irons is that the ball starts straight and then draws, instead of starting right and drawing into the center; so I am always hitting a bit left to my initial target. I don’t think I’m swinging in to out extensively because I would see a ball that starts right and ends up left in a massive hook like you explained in your older videos. What do you think the cause may be?
Also with woods & drivers when I set up and shift my weight left a bit, the heads tend to open slightly. Is this normal/okay?
Thank you as always Tom.
As a senior golfer I have come to this conclusion recently as a good option, something more practical due to flexibility issues I have to contend with now. Have been sensing that I'm over-swinging on the takeaway. Then this video pops up. Nice timing.
I'm glad to know that this video "cemented" what you have been working on, Steven, and I appreciate your validating remarks in that regard!
As you are likely aware, a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.
One does not need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. It's happening every day across the globe through the online school.
Thanks for your message and ongoing support!

I'm going to try and focus on holding that trail elbow bent longer. I already go with a shorter swing, just better more consistent contact, but when the swing starts to get squirrelly I have trouble getting it back. I had never though about trying to hold the trail elbow bend longer. Friday can't come soon enough.
I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, and now that you are "armed" with this knowledge I hope you are able to use it to the betterment of your game.
By the way, the Precision Impact that I’ve demonstrated in various lesson videos including this one - ua-cam.com/video/hVxTSCNRroo/v-deo.html - is an excellent training aid that will help you to neutralize the cause and overcome this issue. I highly recommend it. If interested you can get your Precision Impact Trainer here - pureswingproducts.com/SagutoGolf (use code SAGUTOGOLF for $20 Off and Free Shipping)
Thanks for your message and come on Friday!! 😎

I love it Tom. No need for super flexibility just good rotation, aggressive trail arm movement and shaft lean. The compression on the ball will still be amped up with a shorter backswing.
You nailed it, Janet!!
I'm very glad to know that this lesson aided in your understanding, and now that you are "armed" with this knowledge I hope you are able to use it to the betterment of your game.
By the way, the guitarist in me likes your "amped up" comment. 😎
Thanks for your message and keep it crispy out there!!

My Dear Saguto, As much as I enjoy watching your clips, the last one makes me laugh and shake my head. I'm an 81-year-old German who has been playing golf since 1968. I have no problem moving my hips to the right, but unable to follow through, so my core is facing the target. You demonstrate and claim it is easy. Well, my dear friend. Wait until you reach 80, and we will see if your today's word of wisdom will still be true by then. Good luck!
I am glad to know that you are enjoying my content, Dan!

Well I am almost your age and find this a perfect lesson for someone with a restricted backswing. Thanks Tom.
I'm 68 and can already say the same thing. An man does it hurt the next few days after twisting into a pretzel for about 60 swings. My range buckets get smaller every year. What a shame to waste youth on the young....
I was lucky enough to find Tom early in my golf experience. He brought me from 120’s to a single digit handicap. This is actually really similar to the way I swing and it works for me.
I appreciate your kind and validating remarks, Joe, and I’m very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you to such an extent; excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play.
Thanks so much for your support in sharing your *_DRAMATIC_* improvement and keep up the fantastic work!! 💪💪

Tom, I started doing this week just before you posted this. I felt like my punch shots were better than my full swings. Is this the feeling you have with this change? I thought my accuracy improved as well.
your on the right track man. hands don't need to go but arm pit high. u;ll start making more consistent contact, finding the center of the face more often, hitting bombs u can find.... u'll be swinging like Jon Rahm in another week.
Nice job with your self-discovery of this!
To the untrained eye the stock finish for the swing system I teach may have a somewhat abbreviated look to it, however it is simply the result of a very connected, powerful, and body-friendly motion and confirms the following: 1) We retained the structure of our arms and shoulders that we created at setup, 2) We had forward shaft lean at impact for crispy compression, 3) We moved the trail shoulder past the ball, and 4) We did not flip or roll our hands through the zone. Have a look at Tommy Fleetwood's finish, for example - he is one of the best ball strikers out there. And there are plenty of others on Tour whose follow-throughs are similar. There's no need for the shaft to whack you in the back, and for many in the amateur ranks that type of loose finish is an indicator of a breakdown somewhere in the swing motion.
Thanks for your message and keep up the great work!!

Very much a stack and tilt look, with that short backswing and weight forward. I've seen a guy at my driving range absolutely crush it with that short backswing using stack and tilt. It was an eye-opener for sure.

Tom, this is a great tip/swing thought, especially for for older guys (like me) with back issues. I've noticed that sometimes when I'm hitting the ball solidly, I'm playing a lot more shots with a shorter backswing, almost like a knock-down. Great lesson!

Tried this at the range and I found the half swing position is where my top of backswing should be. Beyond that, I tend to cup my lead wrist and generate fade or slice ball flight now matter how in-to-out my swing path is.
With this new backswing I am able to have a flat lead wrist, and as a result of the short backswing, my body will automatically remind me to add a skateboard-like move on my trail foot, which eventually my impact even more powerful.
What an epic video you just shot, Tom.

I'm 63 and I have a short back swing. Usually my back swing stops when the left shoulder hits my chin. I get good distance too. Good video Tom.
Nice! Thanks for validating this with your personal success, Bruce, and keep up the great work!
Tom
I was trying this move that you are advocating in this video yesterday Tom, but it seems that I was hitting a number of "fat shots." I was also working on a "zonal" ball position that may have been a cause. Any suggestions? Thanks Tom! Always look forward to viewing your lessons! I've archived this video!
Hi John,
This lesson in and of itself ought not produce fat shots and should ultimately deliver a crispier impact condition. Consider the following possibilities: 1) Ball position is too far forward, 2) Hands are too far back at address (they should be in line with the inside of your lead thigh), 3) The swing center and low point are drifting backwards at some point during the motion (face-on video will help you determine this), 4) The downswing is steep and/or the path is out-to-in, 5) Conversely, the path is too shallow, 6) Early extension of the trail arm during the downswing (also known as "casting"), 7) Flipping/scooping through the zone, 8) Loss of relationship with the ball (shoulder angle flattening, loss of tilt). Though not an exhaustive list, those are the primary causes of fats, thins, and tops. By the way, always begin with the setup - in this case the first two possibilities - prior to diving into a swing intervention.
With specific regard to #1 above, I suggest starting with a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and creeping more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs). From there you can make incremental tweaks to see how different positions affect impact quality and shot shape. (By the way, I strongly suggest using alignment sticks when monitoring ball position - one on the foot line, a second one parallel to the first to mark the target line, and a third perpendicular to these to show ball position - as our side-on view from above tends to skew our perspective of the actual location of the ball relative to our stance.)
As for hand position, it remains consistent - even with the inside of your lead thigh - no matter which club you are hitting. Additionally, the lead arm and club shaft should form a straight line from the face-on view, giving your setup a lowercase "y" look.
By the way, I recently updated my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lesson and drill content, this is a great way to refresh your fundamental understanding of this system and perhaps even pick up a few new crispy nuggets if you’ve already been through the previous course. Check it out if interested!
Tom
Thank you for the extensive answer to my asking for suggestions to fat shots! This too will be archived together with this video!
With this compact swing with a driver, how does it impact how where in the stance and how high you should tee the ball? It looks like you have the ball well inside your left foot and less than half the ball is above the driver?
You hear a lot about the "wide" takeaway. I'm not saying it's wrong, per se, but your method makes more sense to me. Get that trail arm tucked in and folded early, and it's one less thing I have to think about when I'm taking the club back. You really emphasize that in your golf school and it really works!
I appreciate that and I'm glad to know that my school's instruction content is connecting well with you!
If our objective is to create a powerful, consistent ball striking machine, then this necessitates the elimination of variables in order to optimize the machine's performance. Wide takeaways and long backswings are fertile ground for breeding said variables, and while those who are gifted with exceptional athleticism and timing can have success with it, there's really no reason for or benefit to having to work so hard. Proof of this is available on TV every weekend. The guys with compact, connected motions on Tour are hitting it just as far as those who create "width", and there's far fewer moving pieces for them to have to manage.
Thanks for your message, support, and online school shout out, and keep up the great work!!
Tom
Tom, I was deep in thought about what moves first ("trigger," if you will) in the swing you teach, which I have struggled with figuring out. In watching your swing on all your videos it appears to that your trial legs straightens almost immediately near the Strat of the backswing, which I think would work as a "first move" swing-thought since it has to happen anyway. But then I thought if that's the case, why not just set up with the trail leg "pre"-straightened at address to begin with, and use this as your "post" as you say?
Signed,
Pondering
"trail" leg
Well, what you are referencing is actually a drill that I often use to convey and ingrain the necessary feels, and you can absolutely take it to the course. In fact, Steve Elkington preset his hips and straightened his trail leg in his setup when he was transitioning to the Stack and Tilt swing system...and he even played tour events doing that!
So go ahead and post away, "Pondering", and see how that performs for you.

Tom
With a short backswing does that give you enough time at the top especially if you tend to rush from the top, thanks
The top is the top, Raymond. In other words, the key is to get to - but not go beyond - our body's natural stopping point.
Rushing from the top is related to the "hit at the ball" instinct that plagues so many amateur golfers and/or a swing tempo that is too fast or herky jerky..
And while I certainly have other content that addresses this issue, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lessons and drills, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

I was ready to argue with you, until you said tpur the skins winner NOW. Went fro. A 25 to a 15 in matter of 6 months. Takes awhile to get rid of alot of 100s I to mid 80s. I do adjust a little different on certain things. But weight is always forward. And BTW I do a 3 o'clock to a 9 o'clock swing. Been doing this about 3 months now.
Go back to playing COD!!!! Lmao

Great video Tom. But it’s difficult to swing shorter when you can swing longer. You actually did virtually a full swing for the last couple of shots but I suppose it’s feel rather than real!
Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it, David!
It's all relative, since as mentioned my "normal" swing can actually be too long and has a tendency to get "loose" as a result. (And yes - feel is definitely different from real.) Anyway, the key is to get to - but not go beyond - our body's natural stopping point.
We don't need to force ourselves to get to "parallel" with this swing, and fighting our body in an attempt to do so will result in some combination of the above issues. If we execute this swing properly we will have created width and plenty of distance for that club to travel by taking it in deep, and that enables us to then harness the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum".

@@SagutoGolf thanks Tom. A brilliant reply which I really appreciate because I know how busy you are. Very kind of you.
I'm 95% in on this approach but with a question: the golf club wants to turn over (ie release) because of how it's designed (if I have a relaxed grip and swing it back and forth the head - and my hands - turn over). It takes extra effort to keep the fact pointing at the target into the follow-through - is it worth it? What about any potential injury from resisting that force? Thanks.
Hi Ken,
If we start with the face square and do not manipulate it during the swing motion, then it should remain square through the zone without any forcing. In those drill swings that I demonstrate with the abbreviated finish I emphasize keeping the face pointing targetward as a means to discourage the flipping/rolling actions that cause issues for so many golfers. In the actual full swing the forearms will naturally "trade places" from pre- to post-impact, but this should not be construed as a contrived move (although many a casual observer has gone down that rabbit hole).
Ideally, we should simply "allow" the hand and wrist actions to happen without forcing anything. In other words, if we have a secure grip, pre-establish the connections properly in the setup, and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct positions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including the proper wrist and hand action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. We are minimizing variables and building a ball striking machine, and the golfer will find that as trust builds in the shoulders will rotate freely and the "machine" will then be optimized. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power.
And while I certainly have videos that address this topic, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lesson and drill content, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

that vid of Hogarth showed him swinging way higher than you demo'd (almost vertical). Rahm does have a shorter swing. Nonetheless, good tip!
Tony Finau would have been a better short swing example to show, like John Rahm!
At around the 3:00 mark my arm is approximately in the same spot as Mr. Hogan's at the top of his backswing. Of course, he cupped his wrists and that allowed the club to travel a greater distance back.
Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I hope it helps!

Would love to give this a try, but winter is coming soon and our courses and ranges are already starting to close for the season. Do you have any thoughts on the value of simulator training in the off season? Will indoor practice translate outdoors in the spring, or would I be better off just starting fresh in the spring again?
Man...never stop playing as I was told 50yrs ago..."play when you can...practice when you can't".
Play as much as you can brother, I got the Garmin for this winter and it's great at the range and hitting into a impact screen. If you're thinking about shooting in to a net, buy Something else or know that it will take off 20m carry (using the garmin app atleast, people seem to have more success with awesome golf app)
_Proper_ indoor practice will absolutely be beneficial during the offseason, Rod. In doing so, with regard to hitting off mats - which tend to do a great job of masking poorly struck shots - here are a few suggestions that can help you discern between crispy and soggy impact:
1) Get yourself an old hand towel and fold it in half. Place it no more than 2 inches behind your ball, thereby requiring you to miss the towel and make ball first contact on your downswing. As you improve, move the towel closer to the ball. The small thickness of a one-half folded towel will not impede your backswing takeaway.
2) If you can, put down a thick chalk line or some inexpensive spray foot powder on the mat about an inch in front of the ball. Try to hit the ball first and then the chalk or powder. The mark on the mat - or lack thereof - will give you instant visual feedback.
3) A Divot Board can really step up the effectiveness and efficiency of your practice sessions, helping you to groove a crispy pure impact (with or without a ball) while also eliminating those "false positives" as it provides the exact type of impact feedback that hitting off of mats is incapable of delivering. Here's a video in which I demonstrated it: ua-cam.com/video/pNGjL9IbTL0/v-deo.html If interested you can get your Divot Board here: www.divotboard.com?sca_ref=3794896.raX4rnwQz1 (use coupon code Toms10 at checkout for 10% OFF and FREE SHIPPING)

This is my natural swing. Im built kinda like Jon Rahm and have had a bad back since I was a teenager so Im not very flexible. Developed a power fade with a minimal backswing and now Im crushing the ball and with more control than Ive ever had.
Great job, William, and thanks for validating this lesson with your personal experience!!
Tom
The folding the arm seems like you can practice anywhere anytime without a club in hand! I’ve never really looked into this aspect of the swing but I’m not hitting it as far as I would like to move back a set of tees
I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, and now that you are "armed" with this knowledge I hope you are able to use it to the betterment of your game!

Heres an idea for another video.
Your Right leg is totally straight at the top (allowing more hip turn)
Your R knee bends down in the transition (initiates? the downswing pull)
Is there a split second somewhere that you move your right back pocket to the target?
The latter is something Im never exactly sure how to include or if to ignore it in your swing method.
The sequence aspects here would be very enlightening.

I think one of the main advantages to a short backswing is that there is less time in the swing for something to go wrong if that makes sense.
It sure does eliminate the potential variables that can creep in when we get too long and loose, Shawn, and in doing so we can then work effectively towards building a ball striking machine.
Thanks for your message!

Is it correct to say that your body weight stays on the left side throughout the swing?
Yes.
Yes - very safe to say, Hugh. The notion of a “weight” shift in the golf swing has led many an amateur golfer into the vast abyss of chronic inconsistency and frustration. In fact, here is Jack Nicklaus on weight shift: "I don't believe in a lateral shift," says Nicklaus. "Of course not. I believe in staying on the ball." Asked what he thinks about teachers who advocate a weight shift, he answers, "They don't know how to play." Now, there is certainly an allowance for a transfer of “pressure” into the trail side. After all, we are moving the mass of the arms and club back and around us during the takeaway and backswing. Some like to sense the dynamic pressure shifts; others prefer the feel of a gradual increasing of weight load into the lead leg from the start. However, in either scenario the key here is that we do not allow our mass - and thus our swing center and low point - to drift back at any point. In the swing I teach we start with our weight forward (generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs), gradually add more forward weight load into the transition (70/30), 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. There's no "weight shift"; instead, it's just a gradually increasing load onto the lead side. And the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful motion.

So it looks like you don’t bring the club straight back? That’s what my instructor just had me do .. can you clarify ?
Straight back? Noooooooooooo
The club moves INSIDE
Your teacher might be saying that, but nobody really does that, and it's a terrible image.
No golf swing moves straight back and forth. It just doesn't.
The golf swing is a TILTED CIRCLE
Your golf instructor is a snake oil salesman. Listen to Tom.
I used to do that and brought it up and had a vertical swing
Search for the swing surgeon - his son played on tour
@@johnb61133
Yes, there are "more vertical" swings, of course.
But none are truly vertical.
It's a question of what golf instructors call "feel vs real"
If you have or want a more vertical swing "straight back" might feel like a helpful swing thought, but, physically, no is doing that. It's physically impossible.
Now, if you're trying to adopt a Stack and Tilt swing, the kind Tom is teaching, this straight-back notion is BIG no-no.
One of the tenets of SnT is shoulder down, hands IN.
The club moves IN.
The swing is a tilted circle.
There are great golfers out there with more vertical, high-hand swings, like a Justin Thomas, for example, but that is NOT what Tom is teaching.
He's teaching the right elbow tuck and a flat swing. A lo Hogan.
If you're watching his videos, and then your teacher is telling you the opposite, you're just going to get really confused. You'll have to choose what you want to do.
This is one reason random golf tips are so dangerous
A good tip for someone using a certain system can be a terrible tip for one using an opposite system
@golfwitharpad - As @justinpeterson2105 accurately conveyed in his reply to your inquiry, the swing is a tilted circle (or arc, if we wish to get technical), the circumference of which extends from the ball to above and behind our shoulders. As such, if we are going to remain on that circle/arc it requires the hands and club to take a slightly inward path - not a disconnected handsy snatch or roll to the inside - just a natural tracing of the outer rim or circumference. The feeling of "straight back" can easily pull the golfer off of that preestablished geometry right from the start, and from there precise compensatory actions are necessary if there is any hope of returning the clubface to the ball on the proper path time after time. So rather than have to rely on "dropping it in the slot" the exact amount each and every swing, why not just put in the slot from the start and just keep it there?!
We create depth in this swing, and that enables us to fully engage the shoulders and harness the tremendous power of swinging on an inclined arc courtesy of the seemingly effortless force known as "angular momentum" - where physics and geometry collide.

What driver are you using
PXG 0311 GEN6 with an AeroTech Steel Fiber shaft in S-flex.
Yes, the right arm should lever back, directly behind us. And, in the transition the upper part of the right arm should move in the direction that the body is moving, to create an early connection. But, we can't actively try to do this. The hands have to fuse, to trigger the movement. Hogan told us we should fuse the hands in Five Lessons, only he didn't tell us how to fuse the hands. And, nor did he tell us what he meant by "fusion".
LOL! Yes. And that leads us to his quip, "The secret's in the dirt". And thus the interpretations of his instruction has been clear as mud ever since...😆😆
I do a 3/4 swing and I get plenty of distance.... I find if i go any further that 3/4 in my backswing if affects my club face orientation, or leads to more thins or fats.
My 3/4 driver swing sure aint pretty vs someone like Rory but it stays in play more, so i dont really care about the aesthetics.
Nice job, Mark!
The key is to get to - but not go beyond - our body's natural stopping point. This is the point where if we were to try to go any further any or all of the following will occur:

You say "my shoulder move under my chin" a lot in your great videos. A question how can one move the shoulder over the chin?
Well, I just successfully lifted my shoulder above my chin while sitting here replying to you. And one can also hit their chin with the shoulder. I don't recommend either of those actions in the golf swing.
You stole my swing!!!
Oops! Sorry about that!
Moe Norman is back again❤
While the Stack and Tilt system I teach shares a one plane feature, it is definitely different from the "single plane" version patterned after Mr. Norman's swing. For example, the straight-line relationship of the arms and club shaft from the DTL view is a trademark of Mr. Norman's setup that one will not typically find in S&T instruction. However, there are also some definite shared features - particularly with regard to the very centered, connected, weight-forward nature of both methods.
Stack and Tilt is a complete golf swing system based on data from the best golf ball strikers - and Moe Norman would certainly be included among them. The S&T folks determined from this study of these ball striking legends that they all had 3 things in common (the 3 main golf fundamentals): 1. Hit the ground in the same spot every time (consistent crispy contact) 2. Have enough length to play the golf course well (power) 3. Be able to have a predictable curve (accuracy). A player MUST be able to do those 3 things to be good at golf, and Mr. Norman certainly did!
TS
Moe had a very short back swing too. And, well.....lol
And well indeed, Daniel.....😎
Thanks my reverse pivot is now irreversible.. and my back and hips now totally foiked
Not sure what that means, Stephen. First of all, a reverse pivot only occurs if weight transfers forward and then shifts back during the downswing and into impact. There's zero chance of that happening if the swing I teach is properly executed since there is no "weight shift", and therefore - unless one were to fall backwards - there's nothing to reverse. Instead the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing.
As for your back and hips, again there is likely something amiss in your execution of the setup and/or swing motion. I say this with high confidence because the swing system I teach is a proven body-friendly method. Beyond testimonials from professionals in the medical and chiropractic fields, I can vouch for that through my own personal experience as a golfer who previously experienced back pain, and It is further validated by the fact that a significant percentage of my students and online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them.

I need this, your shorter is longer than my 64 yr old hack swing.😅
LOL! It's all relative, Barry, as my "normal" was actually too long.....😆
By the way, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.

what happened to Stack and Tilt???
How is any of what I taught and demonstrated here out of step with Stack and Tilt??
I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. As such, it is important to understand that the lessons on this channel - while fully aligned with the S&T swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, step-by-step, position-by-position learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing as it will make for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through my UA-cam content. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result of the school, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews.

Absolutely!
Bryson heard about the lack of width and left the chat 😂
Dp you realize you're going to parallel with the driver swing?
Yes, Roy, but it's all relative. As I mentioned, I have a tendency to get long and loose - particularly with the driver - so even getting to or near parallel felt shorter to me.
Provided the golfer establishes the critical connection points and structure at setup and has a foundation that facilitates a centered, free flowing motion, the key is to get to - but not go beyond - our body's natural stopping point.
Fighting our body in an attempt to take it back further will result in some combination of the above issues. Instead, we are eliminating the variables that come from being too long and disconnected, and in doing so we are constructing a ball striking machine. If we execute this swing properly we will have created width and plenty of distance for that club to travel by taking it in deep, and that enables us to then harness the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum".
While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lesson and drill content, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

Hitting - Hogan - rather than swinging - Els, Couples
Well, to be clear, we are still swinging through the ball and not hitting at it. It's simply that we are maintaining structure in our motion while still loading all the power accumulators, thereby eliminating the variables that can occur when we get too long with our backswing.
Tom
I will sell my first born to train with you lol
😆😆😆
Short swing looks pretty close to parallel to me
It's all relative, Gary. As mentioned, my driver swing has a tendency to get a bit long and loose, and definitely beyond parallel when it does.
Anyway, the key is to get to - but not go beyond - our body's natural stopping point. This is the point where if we were to try to go any further any or all of the following will occur:

We don't need to force ourselves to get to parallel with this swing, and fighting our body in an attempt to do so will result in some combination of the above issues. If we execute this swing properly we will have created width and plenty of distance for that club to travel by taking it in deep, and that enables us to then harness the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum".

Tom, think you should look at your own video, the nothing swings in reality when hitting a ball are full swing on back swing, shorter follow through. Feel v real are different, i shortened my swing, took lots or practice, to what I thought was half back swing, reality on video is momentum shows it's between 3/4 with irons and parallel with woods and driver. Definitely more consistent, without loss of distance, in fact I'm probably longer, with fewer mishits.
It's all relative, Richy, as my "normal" swing was actually too long.
And yes - feel is definitely different from real.
Anyway, thanks for validating the lesson content of this video with your personal success, and keep up the great work!
Tom
Too bad there's no videos of a guy like pro golfer R.W. Eaks online.. Or is there?..Cant find..But He took it back Real short and just bombed it.. With old tech Drivers too.. Hit 9 irons 160 yards with ease.
Well, Joel, regardless of the existence (or lack thereof) of further supporting video evidence, the proof is already provided here and also exemplified by many great ball strikers of today and yesteryear. So give it a try and see how it works for you! It seems to me that you get most of your power out of your legs and lower body. That's the real secret!
Actually, Alfred, as mentioned in this video my lower body is simply responding to the upper torso action.
When properly deployed in sequence our hips (and legs) play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor on the rotational component, thereby enabling the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a move that you will notice with every great ball striker. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while - and this is key - the head and thus the swing center remains in place.) This will occur naturally if we allow it to, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. For them, the "feel" of the shoulders leading will help in overcoming this, correctly engaging their hips and fixing their path, thereby leading them to a solid, "crispy" impact condition.
Having said that, I do also have content specific to the lower body action, including these:

I like you so I'm giving you a secret what are the key things in stock until it's to straighten the right leg on the backswing on the backswing on the backswing but no one tells you it straightens on the angle of your right foot if you go outside of it you will shift your way to the right same thing on the follow through your left leg left leg my straighten on the angle of your left foot both feet are angled out at address address this is the true Secret two stack and tilt
Thinking you may have an important point. Would you meet mind reviewing what you wrote and clarifying it?
I appreciate that, Vic, and you are correct - the lead knee flexes as the trail knee straightens during the backswing, both in their outwardly flared orientation that we preset at address. The flexing/straightening occurs gradually and in response to the increasing forward weight load and the centered tilting, turning, and extending components of the motion. They are not contrived actions unto themselves. We're simply allowing them to be reactive, thereby freeing up the hips and shoulders to execute an unrestricted *_and centered_* turn.
Thanks for your message and support!

Most of the video examples you presented show the club almost parallel on the backswing-even your own. While informative, these are hardly examples of a short backswing. The concept is good but your examples are not.
It's all relative to an individual's personal flexibility, David. Anyway, the key is to get to - but not go beyond - our body's natural stopping point. This is the point where if we were to try to go any further any or all of the following will occur:

I'm watching your "short swing" and it's literally parallel with the ground and above your head. Your short is not so short, so I'd imagine your "long swing" would be overextended or over-rotated. In case you were wondering, you only have to step thru the video frame-by-frame, but then I assume you have access to the video file too. LOL
I told you in the video that I have a tendency to get long with the driver. So "short" is relative, and even though I got close to parallel it was still a very connected motion with no loss of structure, resulting in an optimized smash factor and a lovely ball flight.
@@SagutoGolf I'm not disputing your length or accuracy, as I can't measure that from the position of your camera, and relative to the ball flight.
What I am disputing, is the definition of *your* ¾ swing as stated in the video, which is most certainly, by anybody's standard, a full swing. There's nothing relative about that.
At some point, we have to consider talking in absolutes, otherwise almost everything can be redefined using mealy-mouthed weasel word salads.
