Brooklyn's Last Seltzer Men | I Got a Guy | Bon Appétit
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 лип 2024
- A century ago, New Yorkers got their fizzy water from the thousands of seltzer men that delivered to the five boroughs. Alex Gomberg is a fourth generation seltzer man and, as Brooklyn's youngest, he's trying to keep the business alive.
Locations: Gomberg Seltzer Works, Cotter Barber, Juliana's, Fresh Kills

So this is the bottle Tom & Jerry used, to spray water at each other with!!
holy damn! now I get it!
Three stooges
dnitemarez Wow, i literally was thinking about Tom and Jerry the whole time and this is the first comment. :)
😂LOL..........FACTS!!
yuppppp
The passion this dude has for a product that’s dying in today’s world is really inspiring honestly.
youve never heard of white claw ?
@Andreas S It's pretty much just carbonated water
@Andreas S of course we have that in europe, its very common in germany
I know this isn't why they are in business, but this is an ecologically sound way of drinking sparkling water. Locally sourced & bottled, low transportation, recycled bottles, no plastic.
Makes friends!
Probably not as good as a soda fountain or sodastream tho, still transporting the liquid
@@henryprickett5899 it's still better than everyone owning a piece of plastic that distribute CO2 from metal canisters ^^
True. I am so sick of plastic. Now even underwear, shirts, etc... are made of plastic or something similar bc it's cheaper for the corporations and increases their profit margin. Meanwhile all those plastics bleach into rivers, oceans and our water supply.
You might have been a bit hyperbolic about the underwear.
This broke my heart. As a kid, I remember going to my grandfather's deli in Central Islip and helping him sweep up in the summers. And 3 times a week, he would get his seltzer water for the neighborhood kids to have fizzies. I miss that man so much, he was an amazing grandfather, and the people who brought the seltzer always were too. Thanks for bringing back memories of the good times.
@Corpsefoot Gaming Fingers crossed, but my Italian is a bit rusty hahaha
Pete Angel How old are you?
Pete Angel is your fathers deli still around?
Man I hate seltzer water but I want to buy a bottle from these guys just because I like them
Ders with some lemon makes it so good
MrPieman00 Honestly the idea of drinking acid doesn't appeal to me very much, thanks.
I don't think you get to keep the bottles
Ever had a Coke?
Whaddaya think is in that? Unicorn pee? :-/
TissuePaper So you never had a coke?
Good luck to this guy!
Max Maker cute too
Max Maker l
I think he'll be fine. Marketing hand-filled seltzer in antique bottles to bars and restaurants was a really smart move, especially in our current gastropub age.
Hey there!
Vice President and delivery boy at the same time
It happens.. beleive me..
A true look into what running 9 out of 10 businesses is really like Hahahah most owners work harder and longer than the employees. After all, this company means more to him than just about anybody there.
Seems about right. People always think us "kids of the boss" get a free ride. Trust me, it is NOT a free ride...
MWChainz Your ticket was free.
Almost the point of being the boss/owner of a company, is to do everything.
Anyone else feel ripped off by their plastic and aluminum seltzer water after watching this?
Yes,gonna see if I can get some delivered.
@@trontosaurusrex9532 $100 a case of 10 bottles.
Polar
I really hope these guys aren't crushed by big seltzer...
La croix got it out for theese boys
Lol I get it
La Croix and Polar better not knock these guys out
They are big seltzer.
Yeah but la croix sucks it goes flat pretty quick
Best I've had is Topo Chico in glass bottles and it's source is from a spring.
Now I want some seltzer.
GhibliOmatiC zhamba shin jia kosh
Damn that blackberry lemonade looked refreshing . . . would've probably ran me $5.95 though 😂
“It hurts to drink and back when there was nothing to drink, people liked to drink it!”
This product needs to make a come back. Not just on New York, but all over.
yes sir yes you can use it to make a very delicious ITALIAN SODA
Giac yup and it's awesome
It’s to expensive
then buy a soda stream. Seltzer is literally just carbonated tap water
Giac San Pellegrino Limonata. I could drink that stuff all day long.
kudos to the journalist for making these guys' lovable nature shine
This is so sweet, last place I saw a seltzer delivery like that was in General Acha en La Pampa. Two years ago
If seltzer doesnt hurt the back of your mouth, it wont feel amazing on a hot summer day. This man is 100% right
so, this is the thing that i saw on spongebob.
Lmaoo

HEY SQUIDWARD
“How about some soda guys” ! Love that episode
AJAX777 what cremebrùle?
This video just now appeared in my sub box. I hope the guys that they interviewed didn’t feel discouraged by the view count in multiple days. It’s UA-camS FAULT, this video was great
Jai Rom pretty sure it was just uploaded and made private.
dogeman not at all this was on my recommended
Lol, nearly 1.5 million views later....A lot happened in a year.
It's trending now! UA-cam doing its thing!
I hope these guys get a huge boost in business because of this video. Great job for spotlighting small businesses, especially those that are family run.
Meanwhile in Germany carbonated water is more common than tap water
In most of europe.Mainly because their tap water is equal to raw sewage.
@@alexscott730 lol
@@alexscott730 It's not treated with chlorine or flourine, but it's so high quality its better then most bottled waters
@@alexscott730 Actually the tap water in Germany is held to a higher standard than bottled water and unlike the US it's not chlorinated and tastes nice an fresh.
@@ytxstream Not in Italy,Greece France and Brittain man....
I love how he describes the bite and hurt. That is exactly how I rate it. Hope this stays alive.
"whole milk" *proceeds to show a carton being poured that CLEARLY said Heavy Whipping Cream* 🤣'
Zach Brown perhaps, but that’s unnecessary. It comes out just fine with whole milk
I wish anyone would EVER be as proud of me as this father is of his son.
I want to own and operate an old school business like this. Even if the market is very small, I believe in what these guys are doing - preserving a traditional, high quality product while maintaining a personal commitment to their clients. Very cool - keep up the good work gentlemen!
It's great that you guys are giving these people this exposure. I hope they get more business and keep doors open for years and years.
Really smart to see them move from home delivery to bars and restaurants who want to serve a premium local product. I've had drinks made with their seltzer, and it really is amazing the difference between theirs and seltzer from a can.
I remember getting seltzer delivered to our farm in Massachusetts on a regular basis. This was a great article and brought back memories of our mother using strawberry jam and
seltzer to mask sodas for us girls.
i keep geting back to this documentry. this seltzer guys and the bottles.... just great!
These guys make life more beautiful
Khalid Harbi actually I think they make seltzer
+Khalid Harbi It's just carbonated water. Settle down with that Hallmark shit, buddy.
Khalid Harbi you are on my level my friend
this is what people mean when they say to live the American dream
Khalid Harbi - You should try out the DuoLingo English course, it wouldn't hurt you, trust me.
Stuff like this is coming back big time he could have a gold mine here tbh
I really hope you never go out of business sir. Your the last of a dying breed. Brings back so much memories.
This is GREAT ! I’m a southerner and LOVE seltzer ! Bern drinking it for 25 years + Other firefighters thought I was nuts, but later had the whole firehouse drinking it. I love it with a lime, not to mention for the best cocktails. But, I’ve never had good, REAL seltzer like this. I would definitely get home delivery if I could. Instead, I have my own filler and it looses pressure, just like he said. Great video guys, keep it going !
3:36 from the looks she's giving to him, it looks like seltzer boy is gonna become seltzer man real soon
Because she is smiling? Smh 🤦♂️
smiles can be a precursor to love
😂
You all taking it too serious lmao
@Kreator SATAN It all gotta start somewhere.
This reminds me so much of old Brooklyn... thanks for keeping it alive fellas. I wish I could be on your seltzer route!
This is so cool, I love how he's keeping this old school habit (?) alive in today's time. Being a 80's child I love all the things of my time, simple and wholesome. Good job young man!
Old School, thumbs up, I remember when Brooklyn was filled with these guys.. props for keeping a good product going
Millennials bringing small business back to life :)
Boomer news outlets: are millennials killing the big soda industry?!
@J mackdaddy Cream Imagine generalizing an entire generation.
@J mackdaddy Cream Alabama
@J mackdaddy Cream everyone does that
@J mackdaddy Cream No one with a 163 IQ speaks or writes the way you do. I'm afraid to say you're either a liar, or the victim of a cruel prank.
Thanks for the sweet memories of the 1950s growing up in the Bronx -- never forget those "egg creams!"
I've watched this at least 5 times. Good for this dude, I hope his business stays growing and we don't lose that history.
These kind of businesses are simply treasures! I get so much joy watching this. I wish them all the best!
I love it. So much love behind something I always thought was just a drink.
Can’t stand flat sodas...always knew there was something better out there...and all I needed to do was look to 1939ish and there’s the answer
I love seeing people who truly have a passion for their work. I hope I find a job that lets me put my passion into it.
Much love for the Seltzer man! Keeping it alive, Good Seltzer is meant to be passed on to future generations to enjoy!💕
They still deliver selzer in Argentina!! My family loves it. Thanks for sharing a piece of history.
Delicioso?
Don't cry for me.
Take a bong hit and drink some cold ass lime selzer 👍🏼
Somehow watching the younger seltzer guy makes me happy. May be his passion ,energy and the chirpy attitude doing it.
That is very touching and actually heart warming. Kudos to this man!
This is so awesome.
'Will keep it going'
1000% .my friend keep it going
#lastseltzerman
You gotta respect this guy and his family. That’s dedication and they’re family tradition too
I love how passionate he is about his work.
The 3 stooges used thousands of gallons of this stuff squirting it in people's eyeball lmao
My great grandfather ran a seltzer truck in Long Island after immigrating in 1922
+Richard Kelbe disrespectful as fuck...
Where on LI?
Happy Gillmore Queens I believe
Queens isn’t Long Island lol
S O its on the fucken island isnt it
You can tell these guys just love what they do and really take pride in it, I hope they keep doing well (so I can have some one day)
That’s awesome. Preserving a piece of history through generations, hope it doesn’t get shut down.
Being german, wondering what Seltzer is, realizing its “Selter” and knowing it’s more popular in Germany then tap water but the American bottles are WAY nicer then ours and becoming a little jealous. Just a little.
Nina K if this was a business in Berlin people would be all over it
Tobias Kolb very true. This would boost hipsterness over lvl9000
Great work Alex! I'm glad everything is working out for you! One day when you're off let's toss around a baseball like the good old days!
FANTASTIC idea to create a new surge in business. Cheers to the 4th generation!!! 🏆👏🍾
I would LOVE to be able to get home delivery seltzer in those beautiful bottles. It appeals on so many levels! Nostalgia, Taste, Fun, supporting local business and growth in the community... Love it. Every town should have selztermen ❤️
Fourth generation 👏❤ and growing, keep it up!!
Why isn’t this way bigger than it is? It makes so much sense.
My grandparents moved out to Vegas 3 years ago, I moved here a month ago, back when I lived in Brooklyn he used to buy seltzer from these guys, I used to love playing with the bottles.
this is fantastic seeing an old business like this getting some new life. hope they never close
I love the way he approach his business with so much passion and pride over the history of his craft. That in itself makes you want to buy the product.
And oh, the bartender girl was really cute. ☺
i got a guy should def be a series
I hope you guys can keep it going for years to come!
I have a turquoise bottle from mothers hometown in Slovakia, just like these. It makes me so happy to look at.
Awesome guys!!!
Holy hell, a New Yorker who isn't complaining every time he speaks!
I remember the seltzer man as a kid, I am so happy this still exists
How wonderful to have a family business that has lasted for generations like this... Kinda envious :-)
wish I could buy their Seltzer, great story
That's freaking awesome
This was in my recommended and I don’t know why, but time and again the UA-cam algorithm hasn’t let me down 😂😂😂
Never tasted that but I love how the product is presented, old wooden box and nice looking bottle.
Something to be said for the old way of doing stuff. High-pressure glass bottles and liquid on-demand with no loss of fizz.
Great content keep history moving
nice job good to see an older business stick around even if it's new York!! good luck to you guys.....
I wish them the best! Come to Miami Beach where we appreciate seltzer as much as people do in NYC.
those bottles!
Thats awesome, now I want to visit.
I grew up drinking seltzer. I remember the Egg Cream and Pizza.
I would most DEFINITELY love to start a Seltzer delivery Company in Puerto Rico.
I use to live in Williamsburg Brooklyn and Princes Bay on Staten Island. Seltzer with a Bagel and Lox with Cream Cheese and red Onions and Coleslaw and the famous Knishes with Mustard washed down with a nice cold glass of Seltzer (too young for drinking beer) was the bomb. I am extremely happy that they have their Seltzer business still up and running. I will most DEFINITELY look them up for some Seltzer when I visit New York. My Junior High school was on Graham Avenue and Ten Eyck Walk. My Butcher was on Graham Avenue and Withers Street.
These guys bring back such fond childhood memories.
You guys should bring back this series! These videos are really interesting, and I'm sure there are plenty of businesses just like these that would be great material! (And especially with how much the channel has grown, I'm sure it would be great publicity!)
what a cool little story
i didn't know the seltzer guys dad is robert deniro
Willy Wilk the old photo had me thinking lol
Maybe he changed his name to De Niro after Procul Harum told him he'd better take off his Gomberg... ?
Framed photo of a mafia boss at the front of the shop is a good sign to order pasta.
This was so amazing to watch! Felt refreshing to see the seltzer filling the glass! Good luck to these guys 👍
How does Bon Appetit manage to make everyone in their videos so likeable!!
Cali in the 80's all we had was "New York Seltzer". Damn i miss that stuff.
I just bought some root beer flavour the other day! It blew my mind that it was still around...
It has been back for a while.
"new york seltzer" isn't really seltzer. it's soda.
"When the first time they ask you if you want sparklin' or still?
Why you try to act like you was drinkin' sparklin' water 'fore you came out here?"
So awesome to see a wonderful tradition being kept alive
I truly appreciate your dedication to your craft and keeping history alive. Truly an intriguing video. I'd love some of your seltzer in one of my whiskey highballs.
If it hurts wen I drink it, then I dnt want it......... except alcohol 😂
That's trust. To give him your keys to your house.
In New York everyone has access to your apartment if they really want in.
@@anthonyjh02 lol. So true. Are you from new York
This is so cool, next time in I am in Brooklyn, it will be a definite stop.
Love the retro-ness ❤️❤️❤️❤️
People loving what they do for a living. Thats what the world needs. Amazing job btw. Keep it going!
super niche product good job keeping it alive I assume we have hipster stoners to thank
this is amazing, i really would love to support these guys, and since i live on Long Island an hour from NYC, i think i will!
Zach Brown Do it, man. Doing God's work.
You can dooooo eeeeett!!! :-)
Wow...very very cool... history come alive everyday for this guy... fantastic job.
watching this makes me ssssssooooooo thirsty and interested in trying to buy one of these seltzer bottle.
