I’ve been raising chickens for years and I know how they slow in the winter due to the lack of daylight but I haven’t got an egg in 3 months. My buddy has Brahmas and they are supposed to be good winter layers but they stopped laying. What do you think about this
@@dennisharvey8435 since posting this a NUMBER of people have reached out and are blaming their feed. While anecdotal, it may be worth a shot changing things up. It has NOT been the case for me (since I haven't had any abnormal issues,) but it has helped others.

I missed your video about dumping excess eggs but I can imagine. Many years ago, maybe 50 or more, dairy producers had to dump hundreds or thousands of gallons of raw milk due to production and pricing issues. It was before internet but the outcry went national. It happens and big mouths had no clue of reality. However, sometimes when we had too many eggs my aunt would boil them, chop up whole with shell, and feed some back to chickens. Not sure if that would be an issue in todays world, but whatever you do don't feed the chickens raw eggs or they will get hooked. Just a thought. Just found your site and am enjoying, thx

Do you just basically have the chickens and ducks strictly for eggs, and they're basically pets until they die naturally? Or do you use them for eggs for a few years, then slaughter?
For the ducks yes, they're basically pets. OTOH, The hens will go 2-3 years and then go into the freezer as stew birds and the cycle starts again.
One last memory from the dawn of time, we had a few glass eggs that my aunt would move from nest to nest as needed. The eggs were supposed to encourage the hens to lay more, lay them in the correct spot as determined by Aunt Betty, and to discourage any cannibal chickens from eating the eggs before us kids could collect. This was one of the rare chores that kids could earn their own money for 😊, to add to our growing hoard and teach us capitalism right from the beginning. Probably illegal in today's world.
