using what i learned from this, instead of removing it, i just ket hammering it closed with a screwdriver, then opening it again, repeated for about 30 mins with ample lithium spray grease to flush it out, and now it works great! many thanks, glad i didnt have to spend all day yanking it out.
That is probably a bit less frustrating lol. Glad the vid helped 😁
Great video!!! Showing how all the parts come together and how they work, beautiful. I no longer have questions about the ebrake system on the Liberty.
Thank you so very much for the break down. Fantastic job Sir, thank you.
Much prosperity to you and yours!!
You're welcome 😁
This is a fab video. Everything neatly shown and explained (without the standard USA half an hour of rattling on about trips to autozone) Love your Diary Dad !
Thanks! Appreciate the feedback 🙂
You just saved me a bunch of money. Thank You! This was exactly the problem on my 07 Liberty (Cherokee for you folks on the other side of the pond). I owe you a pint or six.
Hahah awesome....glad it helped! 👍
@@DadDiaries only thing I did differently, is once cleaned up, I primed them with a rust stopper and then coated them with dry film lubricant. Grease/oil attracts too much dust and dirt around here!
I've just done my cherokee 2004 levers
The cost in the UK for all 4 pieces is 4 times more than I paid for my first car (50 quid in 1975) anyway I wasn't prepared to pay silly prices so I mig welded the corners of the pawls where there was obvious wear and ground it smooth, result was pretty good for the car which lets face it has never been that good with the silly auto cable adjustment system and it's still good a month later
Yeah I couldn't find all the parts for any sort of reasonable money either. Good fix with the welder, that's my sort of fix!! 👍
@@DadDiaries owning my 04 from new I feel your pain , the handbrake stops you being bored , I also put a couple of approx 3" tension springs end to end across to the tab on the handbrake cable drum which keeps tension on the cable and stops it going slack. Under the cubby box there's holes already provided to attach the spring to, works like a dream. Keep up the good work
LOL my JK was just as rusty - nice to see a video that shows the typical case, not the Arizona case! I used a vise and a little heat to separate the two parts of that little metal scissor thingy to break the rust free, came apart OK but still took a while to get them moving smoothly afterwards.
Haha yeah if only I lived in an Arizona climate LOL!! Thanks for the feedback 🙂
Great investigative work. I didn't realize that's 2 separate pieces. Almost ruined my new brake shoes.
Glad it helped buddy. Weird design tho eh, have never come across it before
Awesome video and explanation! Thank you Sir!!
No problem 😊
For what it’s worth I put a couple traps on the springs to compress to allow release of the small brackets.
I have replaced everything and also done the spring hack inside the handbrake housing but still the handbrake intermittently fails.
Thanks for the vid 👍
I just repaired my 2007 jeep liberty. I had to replace the dust shield/backing plates on both sides. I first tried using the 14mm wrench, which I then proceeded to round over the corners of the nuts. Next, I tried using Vise Grip pliers, which I was able to remove 3 of the 8 nuts. Since my dust shields were rusted thru and loose, I removed them. I them used my 4" grinder and ground one side of the nut till the threads were showing, then whit Vise Grips I was able to remove the rest of the nuts. AS the replacement shields were 2 pieces, I did have to remove the Axle. In retrospect, if I had to do this again, I would have removed the Axles. This would have allowed me to use a 6-point socket to remove those nuts. To me, those nuts were interference fit threads. Also, if I had a Oxi-acetylene I would have tried heating them. As you have shown, both of the lever assembles were rusted together. In closing, this was a royal pain in the ass to repair.
Yeah it is a pain for sure... It's a terrible design for a vehicle that is design to hopefully be in it's rightful habitat off road and if it is then it's going to get corroded and gunked up with mud and grit aside from rust. Glad you got it done in the end! What a journey!
Thanks this did help! Fixing my 2003 cherokee (liberty) hand brake today. Living in Finland so all was rusted up.
Ahhh awesome glad it helped :)
Great video, really shows how and where, and i did like you said you would use copper slip on it as lubricant, then others know what to add aswell.
Thanks 👍
Wow.....those lug studs look like they also need to be replaced. I’m in a dry climate so I am fortunate not to see rust like that. My hats off to you.
It can be problematic!
Thanks for video I didn't even know what they were called until I saw your video. Went through a couple that didn't even mention this lever
No worries, glad it helped, I've never come across this sort of parking brake design before, certainly an odd one!
This helped a ton!! Thanks for making the video.
Ahh glad it helped :)
very clear explanation - thanks.
Glad it helped 😀
Great video, searched this to see if yoy used your new 3 tonne trolley jack. Noticed in background you did. :-) picking one of these up today from machine mart Liverpool, gonna use it to service front brakes on Jeep, I know they are OK I did them about 8 months ago, just gonna check pad thickness, remove the sliding pins and regrease them, good clean with a brush then reassemble. Do have other Jack's but have always wanted a heavy duty trolley jack that I can pull along on the floor. Much more in keeping with my jeep grand cherokee wj 2.7 diesel, she a heavy beasty and was a bit of a faff using smaller Jack's and blocks of wood. Be doing new handbrake shoes in the near future on my jeep so this video helps a lot. Thanks, Vinny. :-)
No worries, it threw my jeep up like it was nothing, superb bit of kit but heavy
You are my hero! Thank you... great video.
Lol don't know about that but thanks....glad it helped :)
Great job Mark! That's a very odd system they have! Very frustrating trying to get a job done and it fights you.
Yeah I'm plagued by cars with crappy handbrake systems. Expected to find a dead piston...not THAT! no idea why they did that, my old ZJ Jeep had cylinder pistons in the drums. It sure did fight all the way, the guy who owned it before was a pilot who had "maintained it excellently" uhuh ok
Helped a ton thank you
Brilliant, glad it helped
The part you couldn’t find is only available at a dealer. I took mine to two reputable mechanics that had a hard time even finding the part number. Once they found it, it is dealer only.
Ahhh I managed to find parts in Germany that I shipped but that's great to know thank you 🙂
I have a 1990 Cherokee XJ, it is the same system as the truck in the video.
Jeep gave us all a proper fuck with this design. Thanks mate for the video!
No worries! Yeah I simple brake cylinder arrangement would have totally avoided this problem and would have been a whole lot easier to get out!
@@DadDiaries thanks again for your video and your reply! I was able to use this video to fix my friend's jeep and make some extra $$
Brilliant video! The only one I can find that actually identifies and deals with the real emergency brake issue. Thanks for this. Got the mechanism out, but trying to get it back in is a bear. Any hints on how to get the hinge back in?? Cheers!
Do you mean the handbrake hook on the back of it?
@@DadDiaries yes
I put the two plates back in place, slacked off the cable at the handbrake end by turning the sprung adjuster mech back with a trusty assistant and bruted it back on the hook. Not the correctly way most probably but it's what i did.... It was a pain tho!
Gotta remember to always warm the nuts up. What's in the torch? Butane or propane? Emergency or parking brakes have always sucked to work on. The basic design of them hasn't changed in ages
It's a butane/propane mix. I've never needed to get MAPP gas, the mix has always done me fine. I hate working on them but then the integrated parking brake in the caliper that the MR2 has also sucks hard!!
Thanks man!
No worries 😁
The biggest problem is the handbrake lever clock spring inside the car. My dodge nitro is the same.
How did you just pull it through the hole? I have been fighting to get the spring and cable off cause there is no way uts going to just go through
Plus gas, pliers and determination. It wasn't easy. If you release the cable at the other end you'll be able to take the cable off the back making it a lot easier but I didn't want to get into it with the cable adjuster so just faught the thing to it relented but mine was properly seized up.
I know this video is kind of old but I really need help with this kind of thing so could someone tell me what kind of modle this is and what year. And information is appreciated. Thank you!
Sure ...what do you need? The jeep I'm working on is a 2003 Cherokee (liberty in the US) 2.8 CRD
Great video, just failed my MOT on parking brake despite having new shoes and springs but to be honest I didn't really understand how it works, I do now, so overalls on and have another look, or maybe have a cup of tea first!
How did it go? All sorted?
@@DadDiaries yes got there in the end, turned out to have other brake binding issues too. But then once I had sorted the brakes put it back in for MOT with a different tester and it passed on the brakes fine, but failed on something entirely different not picked up by the first tester!! Same garage, so I was less than impressed, anyway sorted in the end!
This is probably the reason why my jeep hand brakes have no resistant no matter how much I pull the hand brake jeep still roll.. so maybe the pads are not warn out it's this joint that is not moving ?
Quite possibly...that was my symptom
Good luck dealing with the god dam retainer spring.
Thanks.. This must be why my parking brake still doesn't work very well after changing the shoes. There was a lot of swear words then... More to come when I redo it!
Yeah it's a terrible job and I was the same, but when it's sorted the feel in the parking brake when engaging is world's apart
Damn bro. That is work!
Damn yes it was!!!!!
Thank you so much for this! However, how the hell did you get it back together without it constantly falling off when trying to get the brake shoes back on ?
07 Liberty here. Also had the rust issue since they use Rock Salt in the winter on the roads.
Protip* using a simple butane torch (you can buy this at any hardware store), flat head, and a hammer made it easy to separate the 2 pieces.
No worries glad you found it useful. Yeah they were a pain for sure lol.
@@DadDiaries thanks for the reply but I seriously need to know how : how did you get it back together ?
Ahh ok so i put the shoes in first at the top and locked then in place with the pins that go in from the back, then put the top spring in, then positioned the adjuster in place and put the bottom spring in. Make sure you gear carefully the contract points the shoes ride on the back plate
@@DadDiaries sorry I should have specified more clearly =
the 2 pieces that wont stay together is that "swinging scissor" mechanism. Any time I try to put that back in place, it just separates(now that the rust isn't holding it still) so I can't even move forward to installing the springs and adjuster.
Ahh wack some cooper grease on them so they stick a bit. There should also be a rubber boot on the back of then that should help
I have the same problem on my jeep Liberty
It's a pain but so worth doing the job. Handbrake had never felt so good after doing this job, must have been seized from when I bought it! Good luck!
96-01 explorers have the exact mechanism. same shoes. Even if you lube everything sometimes it still don't work. I have all new shoes and hardware, the passenger side still seems to bind and not fully return. Cable seems good.
The metal plate behind the slider is damaged on mine. They do sell the whole plate with shoes on ebay. It actually fits some jeeps too.
That's really useful to know thanks for advising ☺
You should just replace the entire thing , instead of wasting you time, just prefer a new type drum brakes shoes and drums and piston and fit it on. It is silly to waste time on such things, cause once you replace them they will last . And it's far simpler.
I'm not sure the housing design would accept that, do you have a link to pics or write up where you have done that? 🙂
Fix cod jeep liberty 2006
P2096 and p2098
I'm not sure what you are asking there 🤔
@@DadDiaries The 2006 Jeep Liberty engine bulb appeared, the reason was the result of the examination, the appearance of code p2096 and p2098 What is the malfunction and how to fix it exactly
So I wouldn't exactly know I'm afraid....I had a good old Google and the following is available...
What repairs can fix the P2096 code?
Repairing a vacuum or other hose/line leak.
Replacing the catalytic converter.
Replacing the fuel filter, fuel pump, or fuel pressure regulator.
Replacing the oxygen or mass airflow sensor.
Replacing the spark plugs.
What repairs can fix the P2098 code?
Clearing the code and repairing the exhaust leak.
Replacing the pre catalyst O2 sensor or repair the wiring.
Replace O2 sensors for the pre and post catalyst if they are damaged from an issue that has got repaired like a head gasket that leaked coolant into the exhaust.
Perhaps consider joining Jeepforum.com or more specifically for Liberties... Lostjeeps.com and put a post in the forum describing your problem and the symptoms you are experiencing with the Jeep. I'm sure someone else will have experienced this. It's bet to try and think about all possible options before blinding replacing components as that gets expensive and sometimes the fix can be relatively simple. 🙂
With all the rust completely enveloping the whole wheel assembly I think your hand brake would be the least of your worries.
Welcome to old jeeps.
For sure!!
@@Whyexes More like, welcome to the UK!
The rust is crucial to keeping the jeep together👌🤠
Replace it with modern drum brakes. This is just really silly, for an English man you should really know better.
If it was newer I possibly would, but it's not necessarily worth that and tbh most people wouldn't want to do that. Thanks for your comment 🙂
