13:42 fast forward to 2027 there Arron (Oh, despite being a skint pensioner I've just brought a 'Pre - Owned' ZV-E10 to go with my 5100. Just need a bargain lens now to get going) IF you pick this up 🤞- I'm thinking about something around 90mm ANY Hacks to get me shooting on a budget? BTW - I only discovered you two days ago and enjoying both your presentation and Info 🙏
It really sucks that there are no newer cameras who are as compact as a5100. While ZV-E10 seems much better it is bigger and I love my a5100 because I don't need any dedicated bags for it. I'm using pancake lens with a5100 and it really fits in my jacket pocket.
this was super helpful! i use an a5100 for livestreaming, and was debating to get another one for vlogging, but the ZV-E10 just makes sense with all the upgraded features. look like i gotta save up now when it's finally available to buy again
Hi Arron, I love my a5100, but I miss a USB C now that all my electronic devices use it. Taking a different cable with me when travelling or keeping it around the house to just charge the camera is inconvenient. What I miss a lot in the a5100 also is a mic input, as I like to record videos playing musical instruments. I have been thinking about my next camera, and the ZV-E10 has all the upgrades I would like for a modern a5100. It only lacks a viewfinder, which would very useful for sunny days! But the a6xxx are so expensive for a hobbyist like me that I don't consider them. My plan for the future: Getting a ZVE10 for my travels and getting a Sony SEL20F28 lens to 'convert' the a5100 into an EDC camera, almost like a point-and-shoot to take with me all the time in my backpack as it is tiny! Thanks for the video! I am a big a5100 fan, and I greatly enjoy your content!
Good comparison -- won't be upgrading my a5100's for now. I like having a lot of identical bodies, and I just can't afford to upgrade all my a5100's for such a small difference in features. I did a video on why I won't upgrade on my channel ... I did get a look at the ZV-E10 and think it offers a lot for it's price.
It had a lot of features that were pet peeves of multiple cameras in the 5x and 6x Alpha series. Like hot shoes, headphone jacks, USB C, high quality direct-streaming over USB (thanks to USB C!), better screen. Enough to call the ZV-E10 a worthy camera for superseding the A5100. If and when A5100's run out of availability on the second hand market, the ZV-E10 is just great.
The a5100 and a6000 are very similar cameras, but the a5100 edges it for me as it's smaller and has touch to focus. It's still a great camera even in 2021!
I use my Sony A5100 to make UA-cam videos and I have had frustrating times with it. The worst is the overheating. It just shuts down in the middle of video recording without letting me know about it. Lost a lot of potential videos that way. Malaysian room temperature is 32C or 90F so things get hot very quickly. I have to keep the LCD screen flipped upwards to improve on the overheating shutdown time. Then the other thing about this camera is that if the red 'REC' text is being displayed it does not mean it is recording the video. I got caught by that several times. It is only recording when the red 'REC' text is displayed and the timer is showing you how long the recording is. The best thing about the Sony A5100 is the picture quality is much better than my iPhone XS Max. That iPhone has very poor quality 4K videos especially in low light. I do hope to get a Sony EV-10 for the 4K video for recording and convert them to 1080p videos for UA-cam as that will allow me to crop and zoom without loss of quality or resolution.
For video the a5100 is horrendous. I sold it for a Canon 200D with zero overheating. Though I do wish I kept it as an EDC photo camera. If you're just doing talking head shots with minimal colour adjustments the ZV E10 or a6100/6400 are perfectly fine.
@Nick Taylor Yes you are right about the AC adapter. Come to think of it, when I used the dummy batteries overheating was not that frequent. Unfortunately my dummy battery blew two weeks ago so I am stuck with batteries until the replacement dummy batteries arrive from China.
I fix my 5100 overheating issues puting Thermal pads on the chip I followed a video tutorial to skip 30min limit and add the Thermal pads, now it can record 1h+ never seen the overheating problem again but I broke the screen cable dont know its name. I can only use my camera now vía HDMI
The rolling shutter is due to the architecture of the sensor, since the inception of the design. So even before the sensor was released in 2014, when the initial plans were made in 2010 or so (since these things take time to design), the Sony engineers probably never ever in their lives thought people would be making a living off UA-cam. Or how social media would explode to what it is today. It's not like any processor changes in the past decade would help. They could hack and cram in a M1 Max chip inside and the rolling shutter will still be the same.
@ArronPrescott I know this video is a year old but I REALLY hope you see this because I am a noob and I have a very specific question on this video's topic. I have a ZV-E10 and just picked up a sweet barely used a5100. They both have the exact same kit lens, and I zoomed them both back to 16mm pegged as far as it would go, and then held them side by side. Pretty sure OSS was on for both. The field of view in their on-body screens is vastly different. 5100 much wider and taller than ZV-E10? So my question is: Same sensor, same lens, same zoom, why different size field of view in the frame? Please and thank you so VERY much, this is driving me nuts wondering why!
Check if you have Active Steady Shot turned on on the ZV-E10, The crop factor is 1.5x, which will make your shots more zoomed in, but give you better stabilization. Hope this helps!
@@ArronPrescott Thank you Sir. I was positive I had matched the settings as much as possible, but that is almost assuredly what I did wrong and forgot about. I do very much appreciate your educational videos and your taking the time to respond! Have a most successful day with many watch hours and views earned!
My experience so far I've had no issues. The longest continuous recording at 4k I've done was around 35-40 mins and it didn't overheat for me in that time.
In 6 min U say the image quality in 4K and 1080p in a5100 is not big ... But u unfairly give advantage for @5100. Difference is huge and clear on your video I have a5100. Its great for photo. But video ... Bot too good ;(
Hey Aaron! How are you? I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP! I made a Chroma Key (green screen) and I don't know what Setting should I use in my A5100 Can you explain or recommend me the best config? 'cause it doesn't captures well the chroma. Thanks!!
with any green screen, you would want to use high shutter speed. so bumb the shutter speed to 200 or higher, even if youre using 30fps or 60fps. also you would want the green screen to be evenly green, meaning theres no shadows falling on it, or its not folding on itself creating shadows, so be at a slight distance so you dont create shadows onto it.
Make sure your lights you use are a colour temperature compatible with your green screen. If the temperature of the screen and light are too far apart, you won't be able to have white balance work for both. That's when you either get chroma issues, or looking like a tomato or banana.
ZV-E10 is $500 more and it has a jitter effect when panning. Any camera that costs this much and jitters when panning is crappy in my opinion. Of course people mostly take shots or still video so i guess no one notices this.
Sometimes you just have to leave an outtake in 😂 Let me know if you spot it!
Good move to keep it in, I laughed along with you...10k indeed!
the ZV-E4 records videos in 10K! 😂😂😂
@@davidvongries that would be some firmware update! 🤣

The Sony α5100 (model ILCE-5100) is a digital mirrorless camera announced by Sony on 18 August 2014. So the camera/sensor is 8 years old now.

on a5100 long exposure nr can't be turned off, its a big problem for night photographers

Does 5100 overheat when streaming and not recording. Thx
No, I've personally had no issues with the a5100 overheating when streaming.
For me, an upgrade to A5100 would be A6400 not ZV E10.
