Linda is very kind to have taken you around to introduce to you the special dishes only unique and originally from Johor ... I think you should also try the pisang goreng here because pisang goreng in Johor is unique since it comes with the black soya sauce .. kuah kicap they call it here .. it is only in Johor that pisang goreng is eaten with the kicap sauce .. it is very nice actually and one popular pisang goreng stall is the pisang goreng mawar at jln gertak merah ..about the laksa johor .. another story that we heard .. the late Queen Mother she was a european .. she loved laksa so much so one day she told the palace cook to come up with a special laksa recipe but instead of using the normal white laksa noodle made from rice floor, she told the cook to use speghetti and to modify the fish sauce into a thick curry-like fish sauce which is spiced up using sambal belacan .. so this special laksa recipe is unique only can be found in johor and it does uses speghetti in replacement of the normal white laksa noodle use in the penang laksa .. thumbs up to the both of you especially Greg because you are really knowledgeable about all different kinds of food in malaysia .. take care and stay safe always guys 😊❤👍

so glad that you covered th origins of kacang pool at 16:50.
you might be interested to know that after th portuguese takeover of Malacca, th ports of jb/singapore, penang, patani (now pattani in thailand), used to be th centres of cosmopolitan southeast asia.
so we have stories of patriarchs who came back n settled after many years of study in th middle east (in th past, often azhar n egypt (saudi n th levant are more recent destinations))- n bringing back w them their acquired tastes. hence fuul madammas in jb n not some other arab dish. n why its in jb n not in kl or negeri sembilan.
we also had middle eastern traders. these were mostly yemenis frm th hadramawt region.
so in all three, ull see arab foods (often egyptian) n descendants (often frm yemeni origins)
    what abt malacca?
yes, it was on par w th other three before the 16th century. so we see a lot of indian n chinese mixtures/influences in food n peoples.
but bcs of portuguese anti-islamic proselytising policies, th arab influence never had a chance to grow there as it did in th other port cities.
another sister malay peninsula cosmopolitan port city is Phuket. it did not attract that many mideastern trsders or scholars as Penang, S'pore, or Patani, even w no portuguese there. probably bcs th better ships in th latter half of th 2nd millennium cld travel further frm West to east without needing to stop in Phuket. so it was/is a lot like pre portuguese malacca w influences frm china n india.

For authentic Johor laksa, we usually used ikan tenggiri (king mackerel) or ikan parang. Not sardines. And the gravy is not too soupy because for some Johorean, the correct way to eat Johor laksa is by using our hand.

Wow great job Linda! Greg and Jumi, you have tasted almost all the best Malay comfort food in JB. We have a lot of Indian, Arab and Indonesian influence in our food. It is similar to Singapore Malay dishes too. Lontong kuah is a common Hari Raya (Eid celebration) meal and Lontong kering is also common during Eid for Central and Southern Peninsular Malaysia. But the ingredients are usually served separately with lontong (pressed rice) as the staple carbo. You should try Beryani Gam next!

Hi Greg & Jumi. I have never left any comments in your blog before even though I have always followed it. For this blog I cannot resist leaving a comment because Johor is my home state and the food you potrayed are all my favourites, especially Laksa Johor. Laksa Johor is best enjoyed eating with your hands. Both of you showed how much you enjoyed the food and despite the pandemic situation you are still enjoing being in our country. One recommneded food for you to try is the Murtabak and Murtabak Cheese at Kampung Kurnia, JB. Please enjoy your stay in Johor
