Hank Jones - great pianist and overall musician, and with brothers Elvin and Thad, part of an amazing musical family that will never be forgotten. Thanks for the video.
I saw Hank and George Mraz in Westerly RI. He was next to me in the restroom and I had to ask him a story I heard from a Berklee professor who told me at a jam session after Trane's passing, a wannabe tenor player tried to play a transcribed Trane solo, Elvin was the drummer, got pissed and punched him and threw him off the stage. Hank confirmed it and said Elvin would do that to anyone who tried to pull that crap. A fine man and a great player.
Brett, just watched hank and john Lewis video also. You are also a national treasure for turning us long time jazz fans to such great stuff. Saw Hank at Dizzy’s with Joe Lovano. Pure class. Thanks so much.
Nice interview. As one of the Jones family he mentions the Heath brothers, Percy, Jimmy and Albert. On the one occasion I saw Elvin he had a trombonist from a famous family with him - Delfeayo Marsalis. I have to be honest, I never knew about him until I saw him. Very good too
Hank Jones I saw at the North Sea Jazz Festival backing various great musicians including the session with Illinois Jacquet, Dexter Gordon, Buddy Tate, Bud Johnson and i think Arnette Cobb. The Jones family Hank plus Thad and Elvin made a great LP which is still in my collection on Riverside which I must find and play.
Great interview. It's been a while since I listened to the "Bags and Trane" album and I had forgotten that Hank Jones was the pianist. I never had the opportunity to see the great Hank Jones live but was fortunate enough to see Elvin Jones twice.
When Hank speaks, I stop everything and listen.

Pure gold, Bret. Thank you.
“Different but not too different.” Awesome quote!

Great new content! Hank Jones played so wonderfully with everyone from Bird to Artie Shaw to Joe Lovano, to his own elegant swinging trios.

Love the North Sea Jazz Festival.
I remember the Automats! We had one in downtown Brooklyn back in the day. Prices were low and the food was good 😊
the Automat was fun
Bret, we love Hank Jones. Thanks for mentioning John Snyder and Artists House. Great producer and label!
Thanks for this.
Thanks Bret.
A true Master.
He makes some clear points here - specifically what is Music, versus what is hot garbage. I love it! Thanks for posting this video!
so glad you dig!
Thank you for this, Bret!
My pleasure!

I also had the good fortune to see Elvin and his group once.. at a club up in Brookline, Mass. Around 1980
