I attended the concerts in Central Park, August 17th & 18th. 1973. Front row seats. These performances later became the Between Nothingness & Eternity album. A Blissful experience complete with the sweet aroma of incense and hashish.
Great musicians ! I had the privilege to see John McLaughlin, many times, in diferent formations. And also, talked to him.. Montreux Jazz Festival But, never with the Mahavishnu... WE
According to a book by Desmond Mark, a sound engineer taking volume levels at a 1975 MO concert in Lausanne, Switzerland got readings of 125dB three meters from the stage, 110dB in the rear seats and 118dB from the balcony
Nat Weiss,a lawyer manager type, got into John's ear and fed his ego .Billy and the boys thought it was a democratic project. Things fell apart. I am a guitar player but the rest of the guys were the reason I went to the show his volume was obnoxious but the collective group was groundbreaking when John finally came down it was the Indian musicians that saved him Johnny Mack went on to become a nice guy

Saw them with Cannonball Adderly and the Steve Miller Band at the Beacon Theater in 1971. Caught them four other times through 1973.
I was there, as well. What a concert!

I’m honestly surprised JM isn’t completely deaf.

Rock guitar doesn’t sound right unless you are pushing the amps.
I understand
It was ‘brutalist jazz’ cloaked in some eastern mysticism. It was loud and didn’t endure.
Brutalist Jazz. Interesting perspective.
It has endured in my soul since I first heard it in about 1972. And I love the classic jazz of Duke, Bird, Monk, Trane, Miles, and others.
