  • After more extensive testing, I shot a couple of noodles on a new Yamaha YCL-650 II clarinet I selected for a student. These entry level professional instruments are very reasonably priced, play very evenly with good intonation, a beautiful sound, excellent response, and shoot way above their price point. This student is going to love it! #clarinet #yamaha

I have a Yamaha CSVR, loved testing the Yamaha's (including the 650), people kept telling me to buy a Buffet but i just liked how the Yamahas play/sound/feel

Hello mr Kurokawa ! This is my first time buying a clarinet. I'm undecided between Yamaha YCL 650 and Buffet E12F. Which one should I choose? The mouthpiece I want to buy is Vandoren dot B45. What would you consider for my mouthpiece choice? Is my mouthpiece choice correct?

Personally, I’d go with the Yamaha. They’re really not comparable in terms of build- the 650 is an entry level professional clarinet and the E12F is a student instrument. I’m honestly not a fan of the B45- it’s a pretty resistant mouthpiece- I don’t have any symphonic colleagues here in the United States who use it. For Vandoren, my preference would be the M13 Lyre, M15, or 5RV Lyre. Thanks for watching!

What led you to becoming a Yamaha artist? I personally play on a Buffet RC Prestige and it’s easily the best horn I’ve ever played in my life, I’m so happy with it. Is there something in particular you don’t enjoy about Buffet horns or Selmer horns?

I'm so glad you're happy with your instrument! David Shifrin was soloing with my orchestra, and had just purchased a new (at the time) Yamaha CSG clarinet. He sounded amazing on it (of course). When I tried it, I was really struck with how even, flexible, and beautiful the sound was, along with how some of the things I'd struggled with on the R13 for years were so much easier. I still think Buffet is a great instrument (I won two of my orchestra jobs on them), but I find that especially for students, Yamahas are much more consistent, better made, and are ready to play 'out of the box.'
As for being a Yamaha Artist, I was really struck with the company's desire to listen. I got to be one (of many) consultants in the design of the CSVR clarinet, and I really love, believe in, and make my living playing that clarinet. I wouldn't be an artist if I didn't support the company. Plus, they're offering great value for the money- the CSVR is consistently cheaper than the R13, and while there are some R13's that I would prefer to some Yamahas, I find the overall consistency and excellence of build quality in Yamahas to be top notch. I have a split in my studio between Yamaha and Buffet. Selmers are great too, but I don't care for the key layout- it feels very foreign to me. I'm sure I could get used to it, but the Yamahas feel instantly familiar (from years of playing on Buffet clarinets) and comfortable. I'm not saying the Yamahas are perfect- no clarinet is, but they have the most pros and fewest cons for me.
I hope this answers your question. Ultimately, all that matters is what comes out of your bell (or tone holes. 🤣) .

The 450 is a great horn. I’m very lucky to have a great local music store that is a Yamaha dealer. They’ve been great about getting horns in for students.
