Build A Better Personal Cooler

This hot weather got me thinking that I could make my own mini personal air cooler. I have a small “mini A/C” that I bought a few months ago. But it doesn’t work as well as expected.
Going through my bag of parts, I had most everything on hand to build a small swamp cooler or evaporative cooler. Today I put all the pieces together and compared my diy version to the store bought model. I am happy to report that my homemade cooler works much better than the more expensive store bought one. And my version is a more simple design.
Update: using my swamp cooler for the last week or so, I have not needed the water pump. I’d recommend not bothering to add a water pump as the humidifier wick works great all by itself.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

That is really creative Scott. Well done. We had swamp coolers here when we moved in but when we got the new roof, they disconnected them and frankly for our space, they were rather ineffective. In your space it makes good sense. The quiet fan has t be better too. I'd donate the used one to a charity shop and let someone else sit right next to it.

Hi Scott, I do recommend wetting the filter (In the old swamp cooler) then putting it in the freezer as this has worked wonders for me! Granted it doesn't replace an actual A/C but it does help. The air that blows out comes out cold when it passes through the icy filters.

    • @StaticCamperVan
      @StaticCamperVan  3 місяці тому +1

Freezing a real swamp cooler, like those I made here, won’t work as the ice will block the flow of air. Also, as I explained in the video, blowing hot air on ice isn’t an effective way to provide cooling. Ice is going to melt very quickly when hot air is blown on it.

I recently upgraded my cooler ac or swamp cooler. I added a coil and a water pump to mine. Now it pumps water through the coil and the fan blows air across the coil. Puts less humidity out and can actually dehumidify a little bit. But I live in Florida so swamp coolers do very little down here. It is better than nothing especially if your ac does not work in the car. As long as the water is cold I will get 20 to 30 degree colder air through it.

All those motor control switches have similar wiring. They will have a positive and a negative input. Then a positive and negative output to whatever the switch is powering.
Each motor controller will come with a wiring diagram to follow. DC electric is fairly easy because it is a two wire system.

It is probably an idea to investigate computer fans more. There are fans that are designed to be much quieter than standard computer fans. These usually cost more, but I think it is worth spending a bit extra to get a quieter fan. Also, it is better to get a larger fan if possible, as they can run slower and hence quieter for the same amount of air moved. Noctua is a computer fan brand well known for making quiet fans, although they are probably double the price of other brands.

moneywise it'd cost a bit more but if you used a it only on hot hot days you could build this out of a cheap 15 quart coleman cooler and throw a bag of ice in it, i've done this in the past when camping and having a whole or even half bag of ice will cool you a lot more, like you said freezing those thin little grates on your store bought swamp cooler don't really do anything, but half a bag of ice mixed with water, then a fan pumping it out of a hole, it really works

Could you not be using some ice in air to make it little cooler? It’s just water.

That’s the great thing about an evaporator cooler, they work extremely well with nothing more than plain water

      Sometimes the comments are hilarious.
Wouldn’t a 25 lb bag of crushed ice in front of a 12” oscillating fan while parked in an air conditioned garage work better?

    I made a cooler using a small styrofoam .
I measured tiny fan and cut a hole in the top of the styrofoam to place the face of the fan downward in the hole to blow on the block ice.
I then cut a mother whole to put a curb tube/hose like yours to face my direction. I place a block of ice in the styrofoam .I plug in fan and turn on high the air blowing on the block ice makes it feel super cool. It last for a few hours.
