Endless Bad Advice In Vanlife, City Vanlife Versus Desert Van Living

There is too much bad advice given out when discussing vanlife. The one big piece of advice that is given often is to pack up and drive to the desert. And I think for many of us, that is very poor advice.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

Check Google. It is competitive. He will need to create a portfolio of varying speaking narration scenarios. In the beginning, a lot of time is spent auditioning, as well. It pays off once you “make a name” for yourself. The set up equipment is doable.

Good advice. People ask what should be in their build -- it depends on how you live! Solar was a waste for me because I didn't spend time in the desert... No need for a shower because I went to gym. Your build needs to reflect your needs. Not everyone is the same.

Im in Detroit Michigan area far away from the desert and I get enough sun out here at least from april to october and then I usually can travel south or to az for the winter if I dont stay with friends or relatives in the winter here in Michigan. Great episode! I've long hoped for some balance in my own vanlife - as it grows/unfolds. A bit of city, a bit of wilderness (desert, beach, mountains, whatever). The worry is that cities, in several cases, have become hostile to those outside sticks and bricks.

I think the issue is folks that park their vehicle and then never move and it gets really ugly quickly. That’s rampant throughout CA. But I, like you, enjoy variety although I prefer being near ocean, parks and not to far from quality food sources and bulk water and propane. I tried Quartzite when I first bought my van. It’s just not my scene and frankly I felt less safe there than in any city I’ve stayed in. Happy Trails to You.

Very good points! Frankly, if I found myself living in a van I would choose to stay in the West Coast areas and not be in the desert so much. The extreme weather events and dryness can be very hard on your vehicle and hard on your body. One of the big draws to AZ and the desert is not having to move evey day and being less likely to get the 2:30 in the morning knock on the window. Maybe you would be a good person to do a video about how to stay in or near the cities without getting the dreaded knock on the window :-) Thanks and best of luck to you!

You were very interesting to watch and impart a lot of information and wisdom about the van life plus you do it in a very classy dignified way, so being Stealth is definitely not limited to being out in the hinterland one can do it in cities, providing you use the proper decorum, caution and safety and navigate your life at a reasonable cost. Good for you. I wish you continued success with your channel and I watch it as often as I can. God bless.

When my partner and I lived in our van we always camped close to the cities and never boondocked in the desert or on BLM land. We loved seeing new sights and hanging out at the beach or parks in the Northwest following the mild weather. It’s refreshing to hear your thoughts on Van life. I can’t wait to get back to that lifestyle 😊

The desert has always been my least favorite of all of the climates. And even though I’ve always loved the forests, I never even considered trying to live there in my van for any extended period. I’m happy with the “normalcy” of living in the city and taking the occasional weekend camping trip. Not so different from the apartment life really.

Love the topics you brought up! I have health issues as well and always knew I would have to live near health care facilities. I sometimes feel nervous just driving in the middle of nowhere on my way somewhere but I know I shouldn't live in fear to the point that I don't enjoy life.
A lot of people are saying that van life isn't as safe anymore because of the popularity of it and opportunists who may look for van dwellers to steal from but I think living in the city may be a little safer especially if you are by yourself. This would be a great topic I would love to hear your opinion about...

I can't sleep if cars are driving by me or I'm within the sound of a major highway. I can't even stand that much noise during the day. But the desert is not the only place to find peace and quiet.

About parking in cities, it looks like you have a low top van, which does not stick out at all. We’re currently trying to decide what kind of vehicle to get but for two people we could never fit into something like that. So whatever we get would be a lot less discreet.

    • @StaticCamperVan
      @StaticCamperVan  2 місяці тому

It’s much safer to not be discreet. I talk to the people who live where I park as much as possible. I also cook my dinner and hang out with my door open so that everyone in the neighborhood gets a good look inside and of me. It’s not only safer but it puts people at ease knowing we don’t have anything to hide

I agree with a lot of your points. I grew up out in the middle of nowhere. My parents owned a campground in the ADK's. I was an only child and our nearest permanent neighbors were 2 miles down the road. It was beautiful, my front yard was a lake, back yard was forest for miles, but it was so lonely for 8 months. I can see being out by yourself for a few days every now and then, but to be out somewhere alone for 2 weeks would be so sad. I need to be around people at least a good part of the time.

Could you put 1 or 2 small drinking water bottles in your refrigerator for cold water for your eggs or anything else, just refill as you need them from your larger containers.

Excellent video! Thank you for exploring the choices and variety of van living. Although I don't live in my vehicle, I imagine if I did, I would be a small city dweller as I am now for the reasons you mentioned. Also, Thanks for recommending Olympia Coffee Roasters in one of your previous videos. I visited Olympia and had a coffee and wow was it good! I also really enjoyed Olympia and the beautiful parks on the sound. What a treat!
