Hello OldSkuleNerd Chewie ! Nightwish fans here, your reaction just appeared on our radar..
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing in 2013 at Wacken Open Air festival, in front of a 82k+ audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra, London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
As I could see, you really appreciate all the key elements of a Nightwish show: the intricate classical-structured "cinematic score" composition, the high level of musicianship of all band members, the stellar vocals and charisma of Floor Jansen, our Dutch metal queen. "Metal story tellers" - this is a quote to be remembered.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
Hope you'll continue this journey with us, so I'll drop here a list of songs with the current lineup of the band you may like (please consider this list of links only as "a tip of the iceberg", an indication that they have a vast and very diverse repertoire, and not as something mandatory):

For entire episodes of the show with En translation, you should check Denise Hofs's DM channel: www.dailymotion.com/xpinkeu/videos
In these pandemic times, Floor Jansen has decided to make covers for us, which you can find on her YT channel ua-cam.com/channels/xy4Ijz2QKXXJaREs-isxwA.html - there are already 2 covers there, the first is "Let It Go" from "Frozen" (2 weeks ago, already over 1M views) and the second - "Alone" from "Heart" (released yesterday aka Saturday) - >200K after first day ..
Thank you! Waiting for more Nightwish reactions. All the best from RO. Stay safe.

Ghost Love Score is mellow. They have much heavier songs (and Floor even occasionally growls). Check for instance Romanticide live at Wacken or Yours Is An Empty Hope live at Wembley.
Floor is the third, current and last singer (as the band leader Tuomas has said that the band will stop if Floor should decide to leave).
There are hidden complexities in what you think is simple. For example, the introductory riff has a whacky 5/6 and 7/6 time signature.

    Greetings.
I hear the marching feet of the Nightwish Army!!!
Welcome to Nightwish and symphonic metal.
Founded in 1996 by the keyboard player, Tuomas, Nightwish acquired Floor (yan•sin) Jansen as a fill in singer in 2012 after their previous singer, Anette, left the band while on tour on September 29. Despite the short notice, Floor was given only 48 hours to learn the set before her debut on October 1st in Seattle, Washington.
The 6 foot 1, Dutch Goddess of all things vocal remains the current singer, and for good reason.
Floor was trained in and teaches opera as well as is a vocal coach.
She studied 4 years at the Music Academy in the Netherlands, graduated and studied 2 years of musical theater and 1 year of opera. She is a huge fan of Dutch opera singer, Henk Poort, who is her influence for singing opera and played the role of the "Phantom" in the Dutch adaptation of Phantom of the Opera for many years.
Floor Jansen will be the most versatile singer you will ever hear. She sings opera, chest belts, mixed belts, soft singing, distorted voice, and she lets her demon out to growl. 🤘
I'm glad you started the standard introduction to Nightwish, and to continue this introduction, I recommend "Romanticide" from this same venue, Wacken 2013 for your next reaction.
We want you to have the best Nightwish experience you can, so we will guide you in a way that will make every reaction better than the last.
You are going to love your journey. The rabbit hole goes deep, so buckle up and enjoy the ride.
    The rest of the band....
    Emppu- Guitar
    Jukka- Drums
(Left the band in 2014 from health problems due to insomnia)
Close friend Kai Hahto replaced him and recorded the Drums on Floor's first studio album in 2014, "Endless Forms Most Beautiful". He became a permanent member after Jukka announced in 2015 that he would not be returning as the drummer but will continue to help the band behind the scenes.
Troy Donockley- multi instrumentalist and vocals
Troy was offered the permanent position on October 9th 2013 after the Wacken Open Air Festival, same as Floor.
    Marko Hietala- Bass/Vocals
Thank you for the video, reaction and comments. Stay safe and stay blessed. 😊❤🤘🤘

Thanks for the video! Nightwish are categorised as a symphonic metal band. This song is a great introduction song to the band, but it doesn't even scratch the surface of what they can do. Floor isn't an opera singer, but she is classically trained. Though I have heard her do a few FULL ON opera songs before...it's obviously just not her preferred choice, as she loves metal, not opera. For your next Nightwish video, can I please request the following: 'Storytime' (for something super catchy), 'Romanticide' (for something heavier), or 'Yours is an Empty Hope' to hear a verrrrry different side of Floor ;)

Just keep in mind that Floor had been a member of nightwish only for a few months previously when they did play this show at Wacken. The Song originally was performed by Tarja Turunen, with a way more operatic, classic aproach, but I feel, Floor did bring the feels into that very Song. Tarja never sang the last part live, the Album Version also doesn't have it, but Floor made this Song her own in an awesome way. I can't stop listening to it!

Watch more of Nightwish or watch her singing Phantom of the Opera with Henk Poort on the Beste Zangers programme (he sings that part in theatres in Holland). Storytellers is a great description.

Your framing of the band is fairly accurate generally speaking, but I think you'll be surprised if you keep listening to them. This song is always recommended first because it's a vocal showcase for Floor more than anything, who is the current singer. She had only been with them a little over a year when this was recorded. The band is excellent as always, but this is very much about Floor showing off a bit. This is not a criticism at all - I love this song, but it's just one facet of them musically. You should go with Romanticide next if you want a bit harder edge.
Marko plays Warwick basses, and this one is a Custom Shop Buzzard, which was originally designed for John Entwistle of The Who.

Night are a Symphonic Metal band. This was the 13th song in this concert. And Floor still sounds fresh as can be. She's awesome. This song barely scratches the surface of that she can so. The musicians in this band leave any egos backstage, and play only what the song requires. Whey they need to bring it, it's brought. Don't let this mellow song fool you. They can get heavy.

They do have heavier songs. Symphonic metal is the best description. Wait till u hear the bass player Marco sing, he is very metal. Floor can also growl, especially in Yours is An Empty Hope. Each song is so different and they are super live! Welcome to the journey.

Nightwish is a Finnish Symphonic Metal band and here are the members currently:
    - Tuomas Holopainen - Keyboards & main composer/arranger - Finnish
    - Floor Jansen - Main Vocals - Dutch
    - Marco Hietala - Bass & Vocals - Finnish
    - Emppu Vuorinen - Guitarist - Finnish
    - Kai Hahto - Drums - Finnish (In the video you just watched it was still Jukka Nevalainen, he left as the drummer in 2014 and is now with the band's management team)
    - Troy Donockley - Uilleann pipes, tin whistle, vocals, guitar, keyboards, bouzouki, etc. - English
The backing tracks are recorded with the London Philarmonic full orchestra and choir. This is the main reason they are classified as Symphonic Metal, but in reality they cannot be classified, as they cover a very wide range of genres.
They had 2 previous singers Tarja Turunen 1996-2005 and Anette Olzon 2007-2012.
Best method for reacting to Nightwish that I figured from watching reactors and discovering them recently and exploring their catalog myself:
Keep the particularly long and complex songs listed below, if you have not watched them already, for after you have seen all the more standard ones from the 4 live shows mentioned in the numbered list:
    - Ghost Love Score (Wacken) 10 minutes
    - The Poet and the Pendulum (Wembley) 14 minutes >>> Doing some research on the background story for this song is very important to be able to appreciate the meaning of the lyrics.
    - Greatest Show on Earth (Tampere) 21 minutes
1- Just do all the Wacken 2013 songs, they are all great.
2- Then the Wembley 2015 ones that are not part of the Wacken show.
3- Then the remaining songs from Tampere 2015 that were not in the previous 2 shows mentioned.
4- Then the older songs from Buenos Aires 2018 that were not in the previous 3 shows mentioned.
5- To see what they can do with a cover and if you like Marco's singing, watch their interpretation of Pink Floyd's High Hopes.
6- Then you can explore Floor's versatility with her band ReVamp's live performances of the songs Disdain at Graspop and Wild Card at Bloodstock.
7- And finally go in the deep end of the Floor talent pool by reacting to her performances on Beste Zangers in the order the episodes aired.
For the first 4 steps, you can alternate between shows, but I would recommend to still only take songs that are not performed in the previous shows mentioned, as they are ordered in audio quality from best to worst.
From watching a lot of reactions, in my opinion this is the most efficient order to discover the rabbit hole that is Nightwish and Floor Jansen.
That should keep you busy for a while. 😀

I caught up with this "band" a few months back after watching Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen) perform on a show called Beste Zangers from the Netherlands (She killed it there). Listen to or react to any of their performances (live of course). i promise that you won't be disappointed. They are hands down the most versatile and entertaining group of musicians I've ever seen or listened to. You're in for a great ride if you follow them. Peace and long life!

Nightwish Army Denmark 🇩🇰 checking in,
Welcome to the world of Nightwish - as you said yourself, you have only scratched the surface of Nightwish's capabilities.
And by the way - the top 3 in Symphonic Metal - there are more like 10 really great bands and none are comparable, and they support each other - singers guests the different bands, to promote the genre. Symphonic Metal are Symphonic music melted into metal in different degrees, and it's not songwriters but composers, that creates often very complexed music, with deep lyrics and extremely difficult singing - therefore are the people in Symphonic Metal some of the most skilled, talented and versatile musicians, composers and singers - and this can be heard and felt by the listener. Many songs are emotional epic stories based on fact, feelings, wonders of the world and Nature - and the combination of such skilled people working together to created experiences - are something you haven't experienced before.
I am older than you and also an old school nerd, having seen and experienced many of the former great bands and performers - but this is different - the best of the best have merged through evolution...😉
Enjoy your experience and journey into the wonders of the Nightwish Universe 😉 👍🤘🤘

Welcome to your first stop of a probably long, surprising always awesome Nightwish journey.
    This band is from Finland.
Tuomas is the keyboarder, Songwriter, composer.
Marco is playing the bass and doing also the vocals. He is very versatile and an awesome singer as well. You might watch „The Islander“ from Tampere to experience this.
Emppu is playing the guitar. He can shred it but he always does exactly that much, that is required by the song.
Kai (also Wintersun) is now at the drums and replaced the original drummer Jukka (whom you saw here) who had stop playing the drums due to health issues. But he still is with the band. Julka was a perfect drummer and showman, Kai is a perfect drummer and a machine and beast at the drums.
Then there is Troy, a multi instrumentalist from England who in older performances supported the band at some tracks but became luckily a full member of the band after this tour. He‘s a great singer as well.
Last but not least there is Floor, the Dutch singer. She is the bands third singer after Tarja (operatic) and Annett from Sweden (pop/rock). She can sing really everything from opera over pop/ rock to growls
Here are some suggestions for your next stops:
-> There are only great songs from Wacken: „Story Time“ and "Ever Dream" are catchy in a very positive way. "Song of Myself" starts catchy and ends with everyone headbanging. "Romanticide", "Last Ride of the Day" and "Ghostriver" are the heavier ones.
-> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast: Maximum speed and Marco (the singing bass player) becomes Hannibal Lecter ;-)
-> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look!! at the growls. You'll be surprised.)
-> „Dead Boys Poem“ from Buenos Aires (so amazing and emotional)
-> „Weak Fantasy“ (Tampere): Kai the beastat the drums, Troy joins in, great duets with Floor and Marco, …
-> Elvenjig / Elvenpath (Buenos Aires): Awesome intro and it continues on that level
-> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) is one of the two most epic songs. The title is not about the gig, but about the topic of the song: The evolution of mankind.
-> "The Poet and the Pendulum“ (Wembley) is my personal absolute masterpiece of Nightwish. Be sure to know the background of this song ahead (short version see below *)
    *****
From the new album there are for obvious reasons no live sessions so far. For all songs there are lyric videos, except for „Noise". But maybe you'll give some songs a try as well. It's an awesome album. Definitely not an "easy" one with a lot of really unique songs, different from what is "typical" for Nightwish. Floor said that she was really challenged to sing the songs that Tuomas wrote for her. Knowing her abilities, you can imagine that they are "special“. It‘s a good idea to hear the album in the given order, but nevertheless here are some of my options to some of the songs.
-->"Noise" is probably the most "typical" song and the only one with "real video". The video is great as the song itself
--> "Tribal" is the heaviest one and Kai, the drummer, had to change his normal setup to be able to play it.
--> "Shoemaker" (about Eugene Shoemaker) is such a heavenly and epic song with the possible epic ending.
-> „Pan“ is just an amazing ride. When it starts you for a moment think you‘re listening to Floors husbands band „Sabaton“. In the song you‘ll be reminded to „Tribal“ and „Noise“.
-> Procession“ a rather calm song with so amazing vocals by Floor
--> "Harvest" is so different with Troy singing, that you will wonder if you're listening to Nightwish.
-> „Endlessness“ is Marcos song and shows his great voice.
--> "Music", „How's the Heart", ... are really cool songs as well. Of course.
The album challenged Floor as singer, which is not easy to do, as she is one of the best and most versatile singers in the world.
    *****
If you'd like to Explore Floor on her own:
Beste Zangers Just in case (which I can really recommend) you're going to do "Beste Zangers" make sure you take the clips posted by "jenniezelf" on UA-cam as she has also included the talking / interviews before and after with english subtitles. The concept of the show is, that on one day all singers sing a song for one of them.
It's a song that is by that singer or a song that means a lot for him / her. So it is very interesting to get to know the story behind each song. And it will help to understand the reactions of the other singers. Floor is singing there in German, Dutch, Spanis and English. Her "Phanom of the Opera" duet with Henk Poort is legendary.
    *****
    * Backstory for „Poet and the Pendulum“
Tuomas (the keyboarder and songwriter) was in depression after the split from their first singer Tarja. He was in the position to either commit suicide in real real life or to write a song about it and die within that song. Luckily he choose the latter option. He is the poet, "killed" by the pendulum. And afterwards there is darkness, silence and just a fading heartbeat. It gives me a shiver every time.
As this song is so emotional for him all the others have an eye on him. He even had his the vocals turned off in his in ears.
One detail showing the ingenuity of Tuoams: Exactly three minutes after the words "Now I have only three minutes and counting" he is "killed" by the pendulum. And then everything becomes dark and there is just this fading heartbeat of the dying poet.
Here is the open letter Tuomas / the band wrote towards Tarja:
    nightwish.fandom.com/wiki/Open_Letter_to_Tarja_Turunen
    And here is her response:
    nightwish.fandom.com/wiki/Open_Letter_from_Tarja_Turunen
From what I have heard, her husband/manager was (from the bands point of view) the core of the problem. There is one song addressing him: "Master Passion Greed"
They never played it live and will never do so. It is maybe their heaviest song, but for sure the most angry one. You should definitely listen to it.
Greetz from a German-Dutch concert photographer

Floor Jansen is a vocal athlete with incredible range, agility, versatility, vocal stamina, and stage presence. It is apparent when listening to her sing that she has spent the better part of her life fine-tuning her instrument with help from several vocal coaches. Floor can sing in multiple languages and genres and was a vocal coach herself. It is incredible how she is able to take any song and make it her own. This woman is a true gift to her craft and an incredible addition to a band that has always been great until 2013 when they officially hired the undisputed Queen of Metal Floor Jansen, making Nightwish the greatest band on the planet.

I just want to point out a fact that the "Army" never says and especially for this Wacken gig is essential to really judge the power of this particular gig. Remember that on this Wacken performance Floor was still new to the band and the audience, who eventually bought the tickets basically to see Nightwish with Anette Olzon. Floor replaced her in the middle of the tour and really didn't have a lot of time to learn and adapt the songs, joining the band coming from a burnout. This Wacken gig was a true turn point - not only she completely knocked down and convinced even the hard core fans, but also you can feel the motivation of the band growing from song to song with this exceptional performance (especially Tuomas being really in a "depressive" phase after losing 2 vocalists. And all this under pressure - new to the band, not yet alot of experience/rehearsals with the band, an audience being here for another singer, AND the pressure of a live DVD production under all this circumstances! Checkout the documentary "Please learn the Setlist in 48 hours" which tells the story from the Denver debacle to the beginnings with Floor ;)
If you watch the full show it starts rather "reserved" and with an introduction of Floor to the audience. From song to song you can read the motivation and exitement on the bans members faces and the show gets better and better. It's known that keyboarder/songwriter Tuomas had the vocals muted in his monitors, because he didn't support to hear the songs again with another singer. But - and this is purely speculative and my personal interpretation - at 1:00:26 you see him throw something like a headset away. Kinda like "Hell what I am doing, I am about to miss the best gig of my life".

Great reaction and very happy to sub. Most reactors always start with this 'BIGGIE' , which I don't quite understand as most of the NW army advise to leave the biggies until they've seen a little more. GLS is of course an epic and a cracking song but there is so much more to them - I noticed you tried to put them into a genre which of course we all like to do, but Nightwish are so diverse it makes it difficult to find them a home! They've got some of the most beautiful haunting quiet songs such as 'Kiss while your lips are still red' - 'Sleeping Sun', and 'Dead Boy's Poem' - but also some extremely heavy stuff too (Slaying the Dreamer', 'Romanticide' etc) reminiscent of Metallica and Megadeth . Tuomas (keyboards) is the brains behind the music and some people refer to him as a modern day Mozart! I'm not certain, but I think they headlined Wacken this particular evening?! Love to hear more NW reactions from you. Btw, Father Christmas' elder Brother is Markko, Empu is the guitarist, in 2013, the drummer was Jukka but is now Kai and a fellow Englishman called Troy who plays all manner of Celtic like instruments including tin whistles, Irish bagpipes and guitar. Floor Jansen is the current singer still!

One of the most impressive things with this performance is that Floor only joined the band about 6 months before this, in the middle of the tour when they fired their previous singer. You should watch the entire show from Wacken, it's spectacular and goes through many different types of metal. 82,000 in the crowd and they could have filled it many times over. The whole of the band are expert musicians, Floor - the goddess - is just the icing on the cake. Floorgasm time.

Good reaction! It’s gonna be interesting to follow your journey down this rabbit hole. The Nightwish army will come knocking and more knowledgeable people than me will guide you on this road. Listen to their advice and you’ll enjoy the experience even more.

Great reaction man! Always fun to see someone experience Nightwish for the first time. Subbed, and got your other NW/Floor reactions queued up.

I saw Nightwish in Louisville Ky in 2015, maybe? It was in like an old hangar/garage with maybe 300 people. They do not draw in the US like they do elsewhere. It is too bad because they are AWESOME. That show also had Sabaton and Delain. It was unforgettable.

A storytelling breed they are. ;-) You want something faster, Nighwish's got you covered (Storytime or Last Ride of the Day, both Wacken 2013). You want something hard and heavy, Nighwish's got you covered (Weak Fantasy, Tampere 2015; 7 Days to the Wolves, Wembley 2015; Song of Myself, Wacken 2013). You want your heartstrings pulled, Nighwish's got you covered (While Your Lips are Still Red, Wembley 2015). Other than that, you can also just pick randomly from the Wacken 2013 show, can't go wrong with any of that. The rabbit hole is deeper and wider than you probably think. Let us join you on the ride! :-)

I also do believe this was the 13th song out of their 15 song set. So think of that as well. Her voice never waivers.

Hey, it seems that Gabriel already gave you his usual introduction to reactors on Nightwish, so all I ask you is please, go down this rabbit hole and share it with us... your reaction was on point and your comments were awesome. And that's the tip of the iceberg buddy... I love this band for along time and I still get surprised by them as by their members individually. All of them are masters on their craft. Greetings from the Nightwish Army, Brazil showing for duty!
