- Hi guys!
I had a request some time back to share a specific distress ink background which I have finally managed to get round to. I will share with you my background in Melpomeni Chatzipanagiotou’s Enchanted Earth. This page will be available as a full colouralong shortly - however I thought I would share the background portion separately for those of you who do not enjoy full colouralongs.
The materials I use include:
- Drawing gum and brush
- Distress inks - seedless preserves, wild honey, worn lipstick, stormy sky, shabby shutters.
- Ranger blending tools and round sponges
- Water, brush and paper towel
- Winsor & Newton gold ink
- Maskaway eraser
I love how the background turned out, hope you do too!
Hope you enjoy the video and find it interesting!
Until next time…
Happy colouring!

Yay! I love these "how I color" videos from you ❤❤❤
Glad you like them, thank you 🤗💗
😘 Drawing gum - very interesting - background colors really nice - great job
Thank you so much 😀💗
Well now you've gone and done it... need to add drawing gum to my wishlist... 😋
😂 sorry about that! Definitely handle to have though 🤗💗
I absolutely love this background, I am going to get those specific distress ink colors, I love them together, it can work on a lot of pages, the waterdrops and gold really made a huge difference. I don't have the drawing gum yet, but I will have to get that too, it makes it so much easier for me to do a background. I have chronic pain in my arms and hands due to fibromyalgia, therefore a background takes a lot of time with pencil, mostly I use pastel, but that isn't as bright and bold as this.
I also have neocolor II but I am not that confident with them yet, I would have to watch more tutorials to really get to know how to use them in a good way. I used them one time and I wasn't really happy with the endresult unfortunately, but I know you can make really beautiful backgrounds with them.
I always learn a lot from your tutorials and I love your work.
I can't wait to see what you will create next and of course watch the rest of the tutorial for this page. Have a really nice week dear Shelly and lots of joy coloring this month 🥰💜
I am so glad you liked this video and I am glad you got another option for backgrounds. It is definitely a lot easier on the hands than an all pencil background! And a lot less mess to use than soft pastels - although I do use my soft pastels a lot too. But like you said, soft pastels will give a much softer and lighter background effect. It is fun to occasionally have bold backgrounds. I am o glad you enjoy my videos....thank you so much for taking the time to watch them! 🤗💗
I’ve never seen this before. It is amazing. Looks like a lot of work, but well worth it. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much 🤗💗
I love, love all your videos tutorials, thank you Shelly
So glad you like them! Thank you 🤗💗
Beautiful ,thanks for showing.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching 🤗💗
Beautiful work shel … I shall have to purchase some drawing gum tysmfs 🥰
Thanks so much 😊💗
Hi Shelly, Thank you so much for this. I just finished following along. Hubby purchased me the full range of the mini distress ink pads a couple of years ago. I was intimidated by them and this was my first time using them. I had so much fun and the background turned out wonderful. Can't wait to start the second color along for this page.
Hello! I am so glad you managed to try using your distress inks....I hope you enjoyed following along and the end result of your page 🤗💗
Beautiful work! If you dip your paintbrush in soap first it is a lot easier to clean your paintbrush. Hope that helps you.
Thanks for the tip! I will get another paintbrush at some time and give it a try. This brush is definitely ruined 😂💗
Hi shelly beautiful work thank you for sharing your beautiful work ❤❤❤😊😊😊😊xxxx
Hi Kylie! Thanks so much 😊💗
So pretty! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you! 😊💗
Beautiful Thankyou so much for this tutorial.🌺🌺🌺🌺
It's a pleasure! Thanks for watching 🤗💗
Absolutely beautiful!😍😍😍
Thank you! 😊💗
Thank you so much for explaining how you did this. I've just ordered some drawing gum and I definitely intend to try this out. Your background turned out so beautifully.
Thank you so much! I hope you were able to play around with the drawing gum and get good results 🤗💗
I purchased the Ranger spray bottle and it worked good at first but now it doesn't work as well. When I read reviews on Amazon some people said they had the same issue, but I was hoping it wouldn't be the case for mine, but it doesn't seem to spray as good as it once did. Your background is stunning as always! TFS!
Thanks for letting me know! I definitely won’t bother getting it, I guess wr can still get splash results without it too 🤗💗
It really turned out beautiful!
Thank you 🤗💗
I think you work so beautifully with ink on your backgrounds I have some of them but I never really cared for them I found them hard to work with but I never bought the little pads either maybe they make it easier. ❤
Thank you so much Jackie! Yes definitely give the pads a try and see how it goes for you. Let me know 🤗💗
LOVE your channel !!!❤
Thank you so much 🤗💗
I've never used distressed ink before. Was considering getting pastels to do backgrounds but now I might try inks. Love how much I learn from your content... thanks so much❤
Thank you so much! So glad you like my videos and I hope you have tried out the inks and enjoyed them 🤗💗
I have the woodless watercolour that match the distress inks, and go in with a small brush to the edges, but I’d not considered using the drawing gum and being a bit freer with the inks. I use an old waterbrush for the drawing gum and push water through after applying gum, this cleans it a bit better and it’s in much better condition than my poor old ‘dry’ brush
I have heard distress crayons are wonderful to use! Glad this give you an idea of how to use them a bit more freely!! 🤗💗
💗💜💗
I really love your coloring style and just generally your content on here is some of my favorite. I know doing things like color-alongs can be quite time consuming and tiring and I was wondering if you've ever considered doing speed-coloring videos, similar to so many of the speed painting videos that are out there but with coloring pages instead. I know it would make it hard to show the specific color being used for very long but I still think it would be a nice option not only to maybe make things a little easier for you but also to put out more accessible content for newer people.
Thank you so much! So happy you like my videos - I should definitely give speed colouring a chance, probably more likely to fit in with my available time at the moment! Thanks for the suggestion 🤗💗
Hello again. This is Wanda. I found you a few days ago and I have been on a binge regarding your videos.
I love each and every one. They are so interesting and detailed. Your artwork is beautiful.
Question: I have about 48 distress oxide inks and 14 oxide inks. Can this background be done with the oxide inks also? Tfs
Have you every tried using blender brushes to apply the inks? It gives you more control I think, you can get them in different sizes.
Yes!! You are very right…I do have them and I do use them occasionally. Depending on my page and if I use drawing gum or not….when I use drawing gum I usually tend to use the pads 💗

You ever use the masking fluid pens ? How are those:
Gorgeous background, but can I ask do you have to seal the distress inks afterwards, as I'm sure when I've tried them before they transfer to other pages. Tfs
Thank you so much! Glad you like it ☺️
To be honest, once it’s dried up I haven’t noticed transfer - when colouring the page I don’t notice it smudging or anything. However, I do use a fixative on every page I colour just to avoid any possible transfer, which may be the reason I haven’t seen any transfer?! 🤗💗
Loved the demonstration. Does the ink go through to the other side at all?
Thank you! Very slightly in a few spots only - I didn’t let the paper dry prior to adding more water, so that’s probably why (and the paper in this book is slightly thinner than her other books sadly) 💗
