Excellent Video... I am an old school bike mechanic from back in the day, 70,s 80,s 90's. I g ot my start building wheels for a factory. That's how I got started. Knowing the new technology is crucial to getting along with today's bikes. Believe it or not I still use downtube shifters. I am upgrading to newer equipment and this is the area I needed more schooling in.. Thank you!
John Thanks very much for the overview. This was a virtuoso video performance. Excellent break down and explanation of the various component types. The presentation of the evolutionary progression of the bottom bracket types was especially useful for owners who maintain multiple bikes from different eras. Overall, this was just a fantastic job. Thanks again.
Excellently explained. After all, bottom brackets in it's wide variety are not easy to cover. It seemed to be the playground for bike-component manufacturers in the last 15 years...
Thanks for making this! Finally it is all starting to make sense. Looking to change my square taper 68x103 to an external BB, and all the jargon was doing my head in. lol
That was a very useful guide. I researched bottom brackets because a friend is always moaning that his bike is knackered in one way or another. Of course modern bikes don't have any oiling points unlike the vintage British bikes that had rod brakes. Those bikes were heavy but one could expect to get at least ten years of commuting out of them as long as they were oiled once a week. My moaning mate doesn't seem to have the time to use an oil can or an aerosol of WD40 so even a new bike can become scrap within six months. Of course not looking where one is going and riding into lamp-posts doesn't help matters! Another problem is that he cannot have a good bike as he lives in high theft area. For example a good bike that was left locked-up in the centre of Cardiff, disappeared within eight minutes! One snag for the thief was that the bike had got a tracker on it which had been fitted by the police! The tracker lead them to a house that had hundreds of bikes in it so the "King of the bike thieves" was jailed! Of course when the head man gets jailed, the underlings simply carry on the business which is often a way of getting money for drugs. One hardly needs to watch a Mad Max movie these days as pretty much the same thing is happening in real life. Duh!
Thanks for a well thought out and well-scripted video. The break into chapters is wonderful, means I can go back to only part I need to see. Awesome job. Thanks again
There's plenty of info on BB's to be found, much of which leaves unanswered questions. Explaining the basics as you have here kind of puts it all together... thanks!!
This was excellent! What you missed was the really old, (now I guess), cup type and what this could be upgraded to. This I think might be helpful to some like me who are wishing to improve the power train from the older system for more reliability.
Thanks very much for this video! This is simply the best video out there that explains the bike industries mess of BB, simple and precise! And we wonder why when we go into our local bike shop and they don't have that particular BB in stock,( not to mention tubes)! It also gives you an idea of how each type of crank is put together and how it works! Thanks again for your hard work putting this presentation together!!!
"...here you got a PowerSpline. They're kinda cheap. There's nothing wrong with them. They're just...cheap." I LOL'ed so hard at just the way you said it. So damn funny! Great and informative video. Thank you for posting...subbed!
I suppose. I have the taps for 1.375 x 24 in both right/left handed, and the Italian thread. They’re extremely expensive, like nearly $1000 retail for what I have, so ordinary people won’t buy them. I’d suggest taking it to a shop to try to restore the threads first. One would really have to ride the bike completely knowing they’re damaging everything for a long time before taps become an inviable solution. If not, perhaps a mod like that could work. If never actually seen one before in real life.
Great video John. I have a Specialized Roubaix which apparently has an OSBB bb which I didn’t see mentioned here. I want to replace the crankset and don’t know which makes/ models are compatible. I don’t want to replace with the same type as came with the bike. Can you advise?
wow, a lot of info there, defo very useful stuff. Sorry to pick at it but a bit too much of waving about of stuff on the video, doesn't help for us less initiated types. Would be easier if things are set down and pointed at with the back of the pencil (held still) and when mentioning a dimension, trace the line of measurement with the back of the pencil. cheers.
You forgot the vintage bottom brackets where the spindle with the square taper ends, cups, and ball bearings (caged or loose ball bearings) were all separate units. The sealed cartridge version of this type came later (which are the first ones you demonstrated in this video).
Hi sir, i have a question.. my MTB BB is BC73, i want to buy a new one but no available, the BC68 is FIT to install? when i check and measure the only difference is the length.. Appreciated your response. thanks
are all the external screw in type bottom brackets fittable with the same size bb tool? or are there subtle differences? also will a hollow tech 2 bb fit any type of crankset?
Wow!! Sensory overload for this old guy! Got to save and review. Very helpful to understand how my Trek is put together. Had a Trek Domane 4.5 that fell apart after 300 miles. Press fit 90bb. Carbon fiber, Not recommended.
Great video. Sucks being a mechanic to buy all these tools cuz you never know what your customers have. Same goes for derailleur hangers and hydraulic bleed port adaptors. It’s such a headache to deal with all these standards (or lack of).
Yeah. I’ve got a collection of tools. I no longer work in the industry, but I’ve collected most of the things I use. Bottom brackets, for the most part are two main styles - internal splines or external. Thankfully most companies conformed to those two sizes. Press fit/bb30 only require a bearing press and something to knock them out. I have a few syringes for brakes, most companies use an m5 x .8 thread. I just use two syringes, push fluid from the caliper into an empty syringe on top. For most people, a set of Allen wrenches are adequate.
Nice. Really good video. But I am still not sure if I can guess what BB I need. Shell is 79 x 46mm non-threaded and I have Sram Red GXP Crank 24x22mm spindle. What BB can I use? BBright? I've been using BB86 Pressfit on my Giant TCR. The Spindle ends up around 93mm wide (BB on the outside). Could you help me out? Is there a BB that goes into 79x46 shell? Thank you
can i put any of those on my frame who had originally an square tapered BB with sealed bearings.... the threads are stripped on one side in the frame... what could i do?? perhaps the pressfit solution...
One piece cranks have no place a all. The bearings would last a week at best. Two piece cranks wear no better, not until they wear made with sealed bearings.
Was I wrong to say that 1 piece cranks dominated the industry? I bet they still do. The big box stores still sell alot of kids bikes and cruiser bikes. I bet again that there are more 1 piece cranks in use, and existence, than any other single type of bottom bracket. In sheer numbers... 1 piece cranks have their place. Or...show me the data that proves me wrong. I bet you can't. Mr. Dave O...There is no such thing as a 2 piece crank. That was funny.
Finally my question on the difference of octalink to isis was answered, thank you. For 100gr or so how wise would it be to switch from an ISIS to a 2piece crank? The isis seems as a hollow shaft (still most likely) just not permanently fixed on the crankwheel but press fitted into the bearings. I suspect in terms of reliability the ISIS must be ranking pretty high. For racing I understand you need the lightest and one with least resistance.
I really need help. On my Specialized Pitch I have a Square taper crappy VP 73mm x 122.5mm and want to buy a Shimano Deore XT, XTR or ZEE crankset. But there are no sizes 73mm x 122.5mm. I'm really confused. Please help and thanks.
hi mr john i have a few questions right here, i have my 2018 specialized tarmac sl4 sagan collection and i want to change my crankset from praxxis alba m30 to ultegra 6800 the question is what type of bottom bracket compatible to that crankset and will it be also compatible with this framest?FRAME Specialized Tarmac SL4, FACT 9r carbon, compact race design, 1-3/8" lower bearing, threaded BB, 130mm spacing. thank you sir.
I have first gen Hollowtech bb that has spindle integrated to the bb, horrible crankset because the cranks come loose every 30km even if I apply threadlocker to the bolt
I have an old Pedicab bike frame that I want to rebuild. The crank hole diameter is 50mm and 68mm wide, your video does not mention that combination. Any idea what crank assembly I can purchase?
Greg Catalano my guess is that you have an American bottom bracket. I don't know what the inner diameter is, but that sounds like it. If I'm right, You can use the old 1-piece crank or buy an American to euro BB Converter and use all the wide variety of cranks that use English threaded BBs
I think the confusion this creates hurting the industry more than helping. Why don't they put their heads together and create industrywide unified standard like computer industry does?
I have a square taper bottom bracket meant for a triple crankset spindle. That spindle is bent from an accident where I was hit by a car. It's ruined. I want to replace it with a double crankset. Can this be done? Or will my bottom bracket be too long?
Yeah, it can be done. You’re going to have to get a different length spindle. Knowing what length is tricky. It’s best to have a shop do it if you’re going to replace it. You’re probably not in possession of crank pullers, bottom bracket tools, and a bunch of different length spindles to experiment with.
@@johnthebikeguy yeah I have a crank puller. I just bought the double crank off of Amazon for $30. It has a free return policy. I'm going to see if it sits on the larger bottom bracket spline. I'm guessing since the BB is meant for a triple it will have a much longer spline. It's a sqaure taper JIS. I don't trusts shops with my bike. Monkeys holding wrenches.
I have a question, I have a square tapered BB on my Trek alpha 1.2 at the moment, I recently bought a Sram red crankset with a BB30. is it possible for me to get a converter to fit in my frame or is the crankset useless? Cheers
Unfortunately, BB30/PF30 cranks only fit inside those types of frames. It's because the BB shell has nothing external outside, thus making the BB30 spindle extremely short. No other BB shell completely lacks anything on the outside of the BB30.
I am wanting to replace the BB on an old Huffy bike. The shell is threaded and the bolt looks different than everything else I have seen. Instead of threaded holes in the end of the axle it has threads on the outside that a nut screws onto. Not counting the end threads it looks like it's 127mm. Don't exactly know what I should get to replace it.
Sounds like a square taper. Instead of bolts threading into the spindle, the spindle has a threaded portion where a nut presses the arm onto the spindle. It’s just a different fastener, that’s all. My guess is that you have an unsealed / serviceable lower quality type of BB. If I were to replace it, I’d recommend a cartridge bearing bottom bracket, or to save money and if performance isn’t an issue, just simply remove the arms, disassemble the existing bottom bracket, check for pitting in the races, make sure all the balls are there, clean, grease, and reassemble.
Good Video just replace a Square Taper BB with another Square taper Got a a little narrower from 123.5mm to 113 mm - Shell 68mm going from 3 ring to 1x too Many options for Spindal length
Hello can can you make a video that show the difference between each bottom bracket by perfomance? like spinning the crankset if how many seconds will it spin
I believe I mentioned both ultra torque and power torque. If someone has a cottered crank, they should probably just throw it away. I didn't get into ashtabula (american), or the other type besides Euro, the BMX "mid" either. All that stuff is too cheap, or uncommon, and not really worth mentioning. If someone has an Astabula 1piece crank, they don't care enough about bikes to want to ever know this type of thing.
I have an isis bb that broke and I'm planning to replace it with square taper bb. Since a square taper crank + square taper bb costs the same as 1 isis bb (they're also extremely hard to find) My isis bb has a spindle length of 110mm so should I buy the same length and be sure that a 110mm square taper bb won't have any problems?
When it comes to lengths, it’s really not that simple. Unfortunately, it may not translate so easily. It’s entirely possible that it’ll work, but it also may not. Every crank is different when it comes to that style of crank. Some may slide onto the spindle more or less, some may be thicker and hit your chainstay, some have larger inner chainrings than before and need to clear the chainstay, etc.
I have old raleigh frame, and the shimano threaded bb won”t fit. I will need to use those kind of bb, since the shell is threaded and I have shimano 105 5700 goupsets. Is there any way to work around it? I think the problem is in the thread spacing, which not explained in the video.
If you search for Outboard Bottom Bracket Cup Sets (1st Generation) by Phil Wood, they do a version for shimano spindles, and with a raleigh threading - which I think is the issue with your shimano BB. But they're expensive (buying a new or different frame is more cost effective) and sold out, no idea if that'll be temporary.
@@JohnSmith-ox7xc The BB I mentioned appears to be different than usual. I brought the frame to a store, and regular BB fit in perfectly. These BB formats should really get a standards.
I have a Fuji Track classic 2014 and want to convert bb. The kind of bb I have is the squared tapered. is it possible to convert to external bb ? if so how do i get the exact measurments for it ?
Edgar Lopez You don't really need measurements. It's probably a 68mm wide shell on your frame. I'm sure that there's a track crankset out there made in megaexo or GXP. If you find one, and it comes with a threaded external bottom bracket, it's just a simple plug and play with no measurements needed.
Losing my mind trying to find the bottom bracket and spindle for a 1995 Cannondale R400. I narrowed it down to a 68mm bracket but don’t know the specs for spindle and crankset.
Something that I learned about online sales is that people incorrectly think the model of bike is useful to mention - there's no catalogue of information for someone to reference. If there is, it's scattered, inaccessible, and vague. What you have to do is try one with a crank, see how it sits, and use that as a reference for choosing the best one. One may get lucky and choose something optimal right away. When I was a shop mechanic, we had loads of different length spindles sitting in a drawer to test. When you're just a guy doing it, it's more difficult. This is why I don't bother with square taper, octalink, ISIS, and PowerSpline. I just buy a crank with external bearings that thread in and all the guesswork is gone since it's made to work together.
Actually I checked ebay and just found listings for the model I mentioned. One seller had the model plus a picture of the original catalog listing for the bike, specs and all components.
7yrs later I'm still watching this 🙂 well explained and relevant
Thanks!

If I were to replace it, I’d recommend a cartridge bearing bottom bracket, or to save money and if performance isn’t an issue, just simply remove the arms, disassemble the existing bottom bracket, check for pitting in the races, make sure all the balls are there, clean, grease, and reassemble.
Good Video
just replace a Square Taper BB with another Square taper
Got a a little narrower from 123.5mm to 113 mm - Shell 68mm
going from 3 ring to 1x too Many options for Spindal length
Thank you for the info. Although my musing bike custom is also using a bb90/95 so it's not just trek...
sir pls give another lecture for headtube (tapered vs non tapered) and axle type (Quick release vs e thru axle)
can I install a 3 price crankset bottom bracket to a threaded jump bike?
Hello can can you make a video that show the difference between each bottom bracket by perfomance? like spinning the crankset if how many seconds will it spin
Ok, thank you. Great Video by the way. Thanks for the informations
Can be ultratorque by Campagnolo be another type?
And what about the cottered bottom bracket?
I believe I mentioned both ultra torque and power torque.
If someone has a cottered crank, they should probably just throw it away. I didn't get into ashtabula (american), or the other type besides Euro, the BMX "mid" either. All that stuff is too cheap, or uncommon, and not really worth mentioning. If someone has an Astabula 1piece crank, they don't care enough about bikes to want to ever know this type of thing.
I have an isis bb that broke and I'm planning to replace it with square taper bb. Since a square taper crank + square taper bb costs the same as 1 isis bb (they're also extremely hard to find)
My isis bb has a spindle length of 110mm so should I buy the same length and be sure that a 110mm square taper bb won't have any problems?
When it comes to lengths, it’s really not that simple. Unfortunately, it may not translate so easily. It’s entirely possible that it’ll work, but it also may not.
Every crank is different when it comes to that style of crank. Some may slide onto the spindle more or less, some may be thicker and hit your chainstay, some have larger inner chainrings than before and need to clear the chainstay, etc.
@@johnthebikeguy thanks for answering guess I'll just have to try
What bottombrcket for DerosaR838?
Thank you so much, for all your information. It's so helpfull.
i have a question . i am building the frame myself can i use BB 86 for 40mm inner diameter of my bottom bracket
BB86 has 41mm inner diameter.
Nice informative video! But you missed the t47 BB?
C W It’s about as prevalent as beta max.
can I use a BB30 crankset in a American BB sell? because you don't mention nothing about 1 piece American BB.
No. No one makes a bb30 compatible bottom bracket for American BB shells.
Thanks John very helpfull
It may have been helpful for the people that don't know anything about what Q-factor is.
nice vid.. this is what i am looking.. thx
Thank you!
