I was born in the late fall of 1978. When I was four, I sang this song solo at our variety show at the First Chrisitan Church Disciples of Christ Church and in front for the PTA in Kindergarten at my Elementary School in Campbell County, Kentucky. I own both Record Album and CD of The Isish Rovers with this classic recording and song! I Love This Video and I love The Irish Rovers! This brings back Wonderful Childhood Feelings and Memories!
I last heard it before going profoundly deaf around 1974. I can still sing it, still know the tune. But I wish I could once again hear the Irish Rovers sing it as they did all those years back. This song will never go out of fashion: it is fun, frolicking, whimsical and easygoing. In a word, BRILLIANT.
My friend Brady he's Irish and he suggested this song to sing at our spring concert because he thinks of it as the best song ever and when my chorus group heard it,when it was finished we all clapped and said "This is the best song ever".
Saw them last night in Cornwall, Ontario and they were fabulous!! Passed my love for them to the next generation, my 17 and 16 year old were singing along.
My 13 year old reintroduced them to me this year...she loves them! I got tickets to see them on Van Isle in Dec 2012...surprise gift for her....she LOVE it!!!!
Listened to Irish Rovers growing up. My grandfather's family was from Ireland and this was a regular we would listen to. Brings back so many wonderful memories of him.
It never fails! Every time I hear this song, I still cry when I hear “and sorta floated them away.” Unicorns will be the first of God’s creatures I will find when I arrive, thankful and a bit surprised, in heaven. Mine is destined to look a bit like a beautiful paint mare with a brilliant platinum horn. What a grand day that will be. 🦄
A long time ago 1986 it was expo Vancouver….the Irish rovers had a pub in there….great food….and of all things the first cash machines were located between them and the Munic fest house. Needle to,say once I figured out the machines it was a party all night visiting both venues! This and meeting people from countries that I had never heard of, places that I had never been to….TrueType epic experience. One that will last my lifetime fondly….
Just finished vacation with relatives in Taiwan, and passed on the unicorn song to my niece (7) and nephew (3). Both of them were singing along with the song after hearing it once.
On this day in 1968 {June 1st} the Irish Rovers performed "The Unicorn" and "Whiskey On A Sunday" on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand... Three months earlier on March 23rd "The Unicorn" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at #7 and spent 12 weeks in the Top 100... And three weeks later on June 22nd "Whiskey On A Sunday" made the Top 100 and reached #75... Original member Jimmy Ferguson passed away on October 8th, 1997 and the young age of 57 RIP Mr. Ferguson & Mr. Clark
Shel's writing it came first. Will Millar liked it and started singing it on his kids tv show, then the band recorded it, which made it a hit! Now see the sequel to find out what happens next! ua-cam.com/video/jB3MKGCRfRA/v-deo.html
Is there a waay to get the video to repeat automatically multiple times? I wnat to use this song for the background music while I record narration into a power point presentation. that needs to be about 15 minutes.
Nothing. The Irish Rovers made this Shel Silverstein song their own to the extent that it's been adopted as an Irish standard like "Drunken Sailor" or "The Risin of the Moon"

Beautiful, beautiful little song. Who wrote this song, I wonder/
Shel Silverstein wrote it. A diversified career as a Playboy cartoonist, children's author, and songwriter, quite notable for some Dr. Hook classics.
Amazing

They are on scotlands flag
They are on scotlands flag
It's not that unicorns have anything to do with Ireland, it's just that the band who did the song was the Irish Rovers.
