The Smothers Brothers are the best thing about this video.
I've always loathed Seinfeld's standup, but his show was hilarious because of his acting and his collaboration with Larry David.
Thanks for this little time capsule.

Yup, Seinfeld is very lame standup. He's awful here.

It's fun to remember that he wanted to be a standup comedian before he became a TV star. That show he has about Coffee, Cars and Comedians is perfect for him because he can meet and worship real standup comedians like Eddie Murphy, Barack Obama, and even lesser known amateur ones like Norm MacDonald.

You knew Jerry was going places. In the Young Comedians Specials it was A Hall of Fame line up. These stand ups changed comedy forever. Smothers Brothers gave Jerry a shot. He nailed it.

@@stylianosisaakidis3565 Sure, these jokes seem lame, but that's because they've been told so many times since he first told them. Now you finally know where the missing-sock joke originated. And the complaining-about-wanted-posters-in-the-post-office joke originated. And the complaining-about-how-long-the-weather-report-is joke. And the an-extreme-can-be-meaningfully-understood-by-everyday-standards joke. And he managed to get through it all in only 8 minutes. 8... long... minutes.

I taped this special when it first aired on HBO in 1981 (I believe) and watched it a countless number of times. It’s 2023 and this is the first time I noticed that Dick Smothers mispronounces his name. And after such a great routine and intro, too. Can’t believe I’ve never noticed that before.

My wife and I saw Seinfeld in Vancouver a couple years ago and we were in tears nearly the whole show. Like a good wine he just seems to get better and better. Of course his style of humour might not appeal to everyone, and he does reuse a fair bit of material but he packed the house for 2 or 3 nights. Even with all the money he has he still loves to get out there on stage. Now that's loving what you do.

I'm no expert, but I'd say Seinfeld's style of humor and his demeaner haven't changed much since he started out. He found the winning formula and stuck with it.

I have never found Jerry Seinfeld funny. Amusing at best. Clever at times, but I’ve never laughed at anything he has ever said. I watched this whole set and never cracked a grin. Just wasn’t that funny. Comedy is very subjective.

These smothers Brothers were known for their political humor. Yes and those days it had to be cushioned with an sardonic conversation, but it was absolutely political and it did Lean left.
That is why their show was canceled.
