Gotta say something on a tangent John. LOVE that you demonstrated the tone knob using a looper. It's always been puzzling to me why more guitar channels DON'T SEEM to use a looper when fiddling knobs on gear. Loopers guarantee 100% identical playback of a particular section of music - no variations, no playing changes, no pick attack differences, etc, etc, etc....Cheers!
Abso Bloody Lutely! Just south of £700 for an FRFR? Players do realise that an FRFR is just an adjusted PA speaker, don't they? Put a £700 PA speaker next to this and run the pair up and compare? I'd be truly amazed if a pair of PA speakers for £350 a pop each didn't beat this Tonex box. OK get a mixer for say £90 and two £300 speakers - that's a pair of Mackie Thump 212's with 1400 watts each and up to 128 dB each. I'm feeling this FRFR thing has become the latest marketed 'must-have' box and a nice little earner for the manufacturer.
Im shocked no modelling company realized theres a huge hole in the market. You got amps and cabs, you got modellers... Just do what positive grid did? Id instantly buy a tone x amp if it had the same features and a cab. Or a helix amp.
I have one, it's terrific. Use mine with my helix, or a boss gt1000 core. It was 175 quid when I bought it though. Prices have risen a wee bit since. Considering getting another one and going stereo..I will eventually. If you like extremely loud...and don't mind a rugged PA looking wedge speaker with a metal grill.. hey you can't do better. Boss IR2 should be usable. The Hayley FRFR accepts all the inputs. Also has a couple of irs onboard.
Never Too Much is such a vibe haha. I'm in the market for my first FRFR, though i'm not in any rush to buy. I'll see how this is received as more people try them. The fender is still top of my list I think though this may be a contender. *edit just looked at the price. No thanks!
It is quite surprising how long the industry needed to come up with really usable FRFRs for modelling amps. However, it seems to be an interesting alternative to the Fender cab. Maybe I am going to check it out.
Yeah I want to see a version of this with some kind of power tube stage.... Probably you know... power tube/class D combo... Enough tube to kind of finish the emulation on make it feel more like a real amp. Also an effects loop.
Awesome video and playing. I didn’t know this existed either. Also, just a little idea.. I’m saddened to hear about John Sykes. He was one of my guitar heros. I know you are a fan of his and Thin Lizzy as well. I would love to see a John Sykes lick video in commemoration.
@evert7271 I didn't try the 12 but read and watched a ton of reviews on the 10 being just as loud and not boxy sounding with the smaller cab, so went with the 10 to save weight and have the smaller, more portable size.
Definitey cool but I was hoping it would be much less than the Fender - although the ability to load IRs on the cab itself is very cool. The amp tone knob would probably stay at noon for me, but I could see how it could be useful to others.
Built in IR loader doesn't make much sense in combination of Tonex pedal or Tonex one, but I guess it can be a neat feature for someone else. I hope they will develop more busking friendly option that can replace Roland!
It's smart to build it with users outside of the ToneX ecosystem in mind. That IR loader opens up a lot of options for older non-IR units like the Line 6 PODs for instance, or even just running amp-in-a-box style distortion pedals
Is there a reason you feel that the Laney is better suited towards higher gain? I don’t know anyone that actually owns one, interested in how you feel on it! I’ve seen videos demonstrating a variety of gains and the cleans sounded good so any insight helps. Also do you know if the Fender comes in a 2x12?
@jaredmedina833 The fender still has a very "fender" sound. It has a more full bottom end with the eq set at "flat." The laney is a little closer to a true flat response, and as such, the higher gain stuff seems to tighten up a little better. UA-cams compression doesn't do us any favors with stuff like this, so it's hard to get a good feel for how these things sound in the room. They are both great and you won't be disappointed. If you like fender tube amp sounds, I would give the FR12 the edge over the Laney.
I have the Laney LFR-112 and like it a lot for both cleans and heavier stuff. The key for me was proper EQ’ing in my modeler, e.g. some low and high cuts and other tweaks.
I have the Laney LFR-112 as well. It does a good job but I don't think the tone matches what comes out of the monitors when i record. It can be more muffled sounding with more low-mids. I want an FRFR where if you get a good sound with it, it will translate that sound onto a recording.
It seems the Amp Tone control is Tonex's shot at Line 6's speaker modeling in the PowerCab. In fact, this basically seems like a PowerCab. Maybe better, a bit cheaper.
I wrote the same on Henning Pauly's video: if you want an amp in the room and stage volume, why not use your tonex or Stomp via a Line6 Catalyst using the power amp side? You can send an IR via the Catalyst with an XLR connection too, right? What do you think, John?
Yes, I've recently started using a L6 Catalyst CX100 with a Tonex (and NUX Cerberus) in the power amp in and super happy. Also the flexibility to use as a normal amp, with or without pedals makes it the best value!
@@lancemurch247 i haven't played a Catalyst. I've played Katana and Blackstar IDCORE 100 and the Blackstar wins just because it has a stereo fxloop return, so if my presets are in stereo, i keep the stereo running. The Fender still has the giant advantage of looking like a Fender amp. This one looks like a modern amp like a Blackstar or something and that might be some people’s preference but I think most people gigging a 1x12 would prefer something more classic
Seems kinda cool but I'd stick with my Fender FR-12. The ToneX Cab's price makes some sense since they put the ability to load IRs and save presets in there. Still those features don't seem necessary for use with most modelers.
Love the channel, I just would not spend 700 bucks for that.its way too much money lol you could get a marshall dsl 40 and have a tube power amp for your modeler.

Seems like a good product, however I don't see how you can justify the financials of it. $800 for the cab, and you would need some sort of modeller as well. A Vox AC15 costs $830, tested and tried great amp. There are other options for a similar price. How does that work?
Superb, tbh since the tone x came out and saved our bacon 10 shows in to a 45 show run, our kempers and quads we had are all long gone, this can go with our in ear monitor systems and save ao much room and having to worry about monitor engineers doing a poop job

OK, it was over 20 years ago but they cost me about £80 each new. That's £140 each accounting for inflation. An FRFR cab is a flat response driver with an HF compression driver with it and a flat amp. It's a PA speaker. Get over it! You know what a £700 PA speaker is like? Influencers should be doing A B testing these against the equivalent budget PA speakers.
Sounds like you have one of those drummers that think everyone is there to hear him play while other instruments play along side just to accompany them slightly . Lol. Maybe it’s just the room though. 😉
The Fender looks infinitely better aesthetically. They didn't put a single AI model or whatever in it? This and the cheapest Tonex One is twice a Katana Artist for way more points of failure.
Modelers tend to sound too Hifi, and high Cuts are often necessary to control high frequencies and Presence for playing enjoyment, particularly when playing through Studio Monitoring Headphones. Smart move by IK Multimedia ToneX.

Nah!, for less than the price of that we can get TWO Harley Benton G112A-FR which sound awesome and it's all we need if we already have a modeler with IRs or a ToneX pedal or Helix or Fractal or Kemper, etc.
It’s not for me, as I need silence at home and where I play. And I really couldn’t justify that price for what it is. One could build this and do the amp/mic thing(I think it rolls in a subtle low/high pass at the same time) with an eq pedal for 30-50% of what this costs.
The amp tone control does far more than EQ, but I see your point about silence being the opposite of what TONEX CAB features as some of its strength :)
One of these days, a company will come out with a power cab that is actually the entire ecosystem in a box. By that I mean that the ToneX would be built in. Just plug your guitar into the input and go.With a USB port, you would stil lbe able to do everything you do now on a ToneX pedal, except the footswitching. But that could be handled by a remote footswitch, or better yet, MIDI. At around $1000, I think a product like that would do very well. This product has the benefit of appealing to people who already have a modeler/profiler, and it is agnostic about which one you own - this results in probably a larger audience. So from a marketing viewpoint, it makes sense. What will the app do, and will it be wireless or USB connected?
I thought according to Tom b modelers are crap and didn’t you do video on video saying you confirm I am confused you go back and forth ? Did not like those bright and clingy tones from that vintage telecaster played through the modern digital technology (Tonex pedal and amp) at the end of the video. Sounded like two different world trying to come together but not a perfect couple. Modern style guitar pickups might make a difference routing through those interfaces for sound purposes.
Am I the only one who thinks FRFR cabs are stupid? Why not just get a high-end PA speaker, it will do everything the FRFR cab does better, and then it will do other stuff too. Like a QSC k12.2. Just me?
AH, cool addition to the competition. TYVM. My room sounds full enough with stereo tiny Headrush's. If I jam with others, they turn into my monitors & I go straight in. Even the old Boomers thought it was a cool rig, because X and above would rather not carry a 60lb amp. XD, HF.
