Restoration - Do you know what it was for?

- I welcome you to today's video where you could see the renovation of this old hand machine, which could come from the end of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century.
The manufacturer was Antonín Veith and it is marked with the label "Mechanické dílny Hodonín", protected by law no. 3715.
Antonín Veith was the younger son of Jacob Veith, the owner of the castle and manor of Liběchov. And also one of the founders of Czech sugar confectionery.
Antonín, like his father, was popular with his subjects, he supported Czech and German schools, scholars and artists.
But this time we did not find out what this hand machine was used for.
If anyone knows its correct use, please write it to us in the comments.
And that's all for today.

After much searching, I found many American made machines which looked identical and were made for cutting pasta. Excellent restoration. Thank you for the beautiful video. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
With the family being tied to sugar business I would think it could also be for cutting a soft sweet dough, like some of the fancy donuts. Cinnamon Rolls come to mind for one such sweet that needs cutting into strips.
I actually own one just like that and I bought 6 years ago, they still produce them here, the difference is that mine you can change the cutting part so you can make diferent types of pasta.
@@flavialm1 Pretty cool!
My Hungarian Grandmother had a machine very similar to this (if not exactly) And I recall her making noodles with it to go along with cabbage and sliced sausages and some soups.. She also made dumplings (I call Them slickers) to go along with her chicken and "dumples" as she called them. I'm 71 years old and the images and recollections kind of fade after awhile but the taste of her food never will. I'm pretty sure that it was used for other things as well. I will try and find some pictures of her using this wonderful device and send them to you. If my father was still with us either he or his seven brothers could certainly fill us in. Great restoration!!!!!!!
Wow, thanks, that would be great :) My email: veradona@email.cz
t is for cutting sheets of chewing gun into sticks... we had one at wrigley in our R&D department. When we made Big League Shredded chewing gum we used a paper shredder to make the proto type samples of the shredded gum until we had a machine made like this with more closely spaced circular cutters :) Spaciba !!!!!
Of all the suggestions so far I like this one the best.
Interesting, thank you :)
I agree with this one too. It makes the most sense. And yes they do make a black colored gum too. Still sold in old fashion candy stores. I believe the one sold near us is called Black Jack.
That was my guess. Well you had first hand knowledge, I just guessed because of confectionery connection and the width it would make.
@@jefferywise1906 👍👍
This takes me back to my childhood. My older brother worked at Cadbury's in Birmingham, and in the visitors center there, they had a machine like this that dated back to the early 1900's. It could be used for various activities, but was primarily for scoring blocks of chocolate, before being wrapped, and creating a line where the customer could break a piece of chocolate from the block.
The discs could be set ar different distances apart, simply by changing the wooden rollers, as there were different sets, all with different widths, so bigger or smaller pieces could be scored, depending on which type of chocolate they were making that day. At some point the other sets of wooden rollers must have been lost, but I am sure you would be able to make them - as you can do anything and everything so this would be no problem for you at all. All that is needed is wooden bars the same diameter, but cut to different widths to make the new sets. With your skills it is easy for you.
Muchas gracias por la explicación :)
That was my exact thoughts as well
Considering a few things...
Since the family had some kind of connection to the confectionary business, I would believe it to be for cutting candy.
You can see that the thickness can be varied quite a bit, and quite thick at that. (Probably thicker than typical noodles.) The metal disks were not sharpened at all. The slots they fit into on the opposite roller were rather wide so the metal disks could not "cut" the material going through. (Look at the spot where he is sanding the slots in the opposing roller. Those slots are much wider than the metal disks so cutting is impractical.) Also, the opposing roller with the slots is made of wood making cutting with the metal disks impractical. So that brings us back to more the idea of the machine making orderly impressions in a material than cutting it.
With this info, I am going with a confectionery machine that makes strips of candy for either folding into ribbons, or blending with other color strips to make candy canes, or double cutting to make small square candies.
What do you think?
Not with the wooden rollers... candy is too hot when cut to do that. Perhaps strips of dough?
Thanks for the consideration, sounds interesting.
@@sfogarty2 Maybe the wooden parts was wet when using the machine?
@@sfogarty2 Toffee or fudge would be OK. See my answer above. I agree though about hot sugar candy. It would be too hot and stick to the wheels.
@@brianthesnail3815 I have seen most hot sugar candy slightly cooled down some and then aerated, before being streched and portioned. So I wonder how hot sugar candy actually would be at this stage. I have seen it being aerated, stretched and formed by hand, that would sure not happen if it is too hot and too sticky. Sure it can´t be the piping hot sugar stuff that is poured onto a slab anymore. That would also be way to liquid. and slightly oiling everything, I would not yet rule out sugar candy completely.
I like that you actually show washing the parts and checking for lead paint.
Many channels do not show this important step. Viewers can get the wrong idea and then jump straight to sanding on their first time projects.
Thank you for spreading safety information.
Thank you so much :)
A friend of mine who removes and cleans cast iron checks for lead too. If it was used in smelting process why worry about lead? was the thought. 50 to a 100 years later... Is there lead here? People use all kinds of pots and pans for cooking even the ones not made for it. Check for lead before you use.
Gran abrazo!
Gracias a Buenos Aires Walter, tengo familia allí :)

Another beautiful restoration, congratulations Radek and Veronica.

Parabéns pela restauração, uma bela maquina. Saudações do Brazil

Pasta noodle cutter? Or maybe a ribbon candy cutter?
I think since he was a ‘confectioner’ it is probably for ribbon candy!
Yes, I'd go with both ideas, thanks Lisa :)
Another great restoration! I enjoyed the background music. My mother used to play that on the piano and we would sing. "The Darktown Strutters' Ball". "I'm gonna dance off both my shoes when they play the Jelly Roll Blues, tomorrow night at the Darktown Strutters' Ball!"
😉👍 Thank you :)
Amazing how you always seem to know what projects are interesting to watch. And what a beautiful result it is again Radek. Thank you very much and I hope you and Veronika have a wonderful 2023. Stay safe, my friend. 👍👍👍
Thank you too my friend :)
One of your best videos yet. I like the rythm, excellent editing and story-telling. Very interesting to watch, I think you set a high bar in restoration videos!
Thank you very much, I really appreciate it :)
Thank you, from Shane & Helen, in Oklahoma, USA.
Thank you so much Shane & Helen :)
Very similar items are used in the production of flat noodles. The first roller is the dough sheeter, and can be used without the cutters in place to sheet the dough to a specific thickness, then passed through the machine again, this time through the cutters to create the cut noodles.
While it may have been purchased for a specific use, the machine it's-self actually can be used in a variety of ways from pasta to candy.
Yes, that's true, I agree. It is similar with the large coffee grinders that were used at home to grind grains :)
Parabéns. Você tem a marca da excelência.
Wow, thanks :)
I am inclined to say it was the first step in shaping ribbon candy. This machine would cut the sugar mixture into strips which would then be fed into a crimper made of a form and gears to make the popular Christmas candy.
Sounds good, thanks :)
Based on what you said this could be the machine they used to produce candies similar to candy canes but those were brownish colored and were shaped like stick because they were primarly produced from sugar. You can also roll caramel into sticks and just chop them in apropriate form.
Interesting consideration. Yes it is possible, thank you
Wouldin't sugar stick to wooden parts? (I never made any candy, i have no idea how it interacts with porous materials)
@@lootownica I have no idea, but the knives are designed so that nothing sticks between them. I guess I'll have to try it :)
@@lootownica not if you sprinkled powdered sugar on wooden board so when you roll the mix used back then it will pickup powdered sugar and not stick.
I would tend to think the hot sugary candy would be coated in either a powdered sugar or corn starch to keep it from sticking to the machine.
I don't think this machine could "cut" because the disks do not rub against the wood rollers. They seem to have more like a groove. So the product going through the machine would be scored or dented and then broken apart once cooled a bit.
Though it looks nice that vintage nostalgia feeling when viewing a piece is lost. Sometimes Conservatory Restoration is better than a complete refurbishment.

Not large enough.

Me alegro, gracias Ricardo :)
Hey. Love your renovations. I would guess it was used to make hard candy strings when the mass is still soft. 🇸🇪 20:24
Hmm, interesting, thanks :)
It's so neat that whenever you restore an item, it's always better looking than it was brand new.
I'm glad, thank you Chip :)
I do not watch many restorers! Too many fakes. I restore metal toys (Tonka, Nylint, etc.) I never miss one of your projects, hope you and Veronica have a great year!
Oh thank you I'm honored :) Happy New Years to you too Gary :)
You have done a beautiful job in restoration this machine !
Thank you so much :)
I think it is intended for cutting dried products, such as fruit marshmallows) Great work, by the way 👋 And great video, as usually) 👍
Thank you, interesting?! The knives are not sharp, do you think it would work?
Muchas gracias :)
That's without any doubt a "pasta maker"
Thank you :)
Ficou maravilhoso !!! Parabéns !!! Como vocês estão ? Espero que bem !!!
Obrigado está tudo bem :)
Another fantastic restoration and history lesson.
Thank you :)
I love watching you sandblast the pieces; so satisfying! Great restoration!
I'm glad, thank you :)
My first guess was a pasta cutter. A masterpiece just the same. Excellent restoration !!!!!!!
Thank you so much :)
I just am amazed with the details you take with each project you do..
Thank you so much :)
Excellent restoration 👍👍👍Thank you for sharing. Be safe🇨🇦

You have amazing patience with the tape. Especially the thin blue tape.
😉👍
Underwater filming! that was cool. I love your videos and your lovely wife. I really like the info about each piece. it really sets your videos apart. Well done.
Thank you very much :)
You must open a hand machines museum with all those machines that you have restored so far. 👍👍
Well, in those years some hall would be full :) Thanks
Wonderful restoration, not over the top custom but simply, off the shelf new. 👍🏻
Thanks :)
Great job! Thank you for starting the new year off so well.
Thank you so much Harry :)

incredible restoration, 138 pieces is a real puzzle !!!! and not a single piece is left !!! congratulation.
Well, more than once I messed it up when I forgot to put something in there. Lol
I have to agree it looks like a pasta cutter, however I could see it as a confectionery cutter also. Given the time period of manufacturer it could have been advertised as a tool capable of doing both functions. Super restoration for which ever it was. Thanks for sharing. Paul
Thanks Paul, yes it is a mystery. Both options are possible :)
Well done to both of you on another fascinating restoration - the best restorations on youtube *****
Thank you very much for the compliment, it means a lot to us :)
Very interesting restoration! When you discove what the machine is, please let us know
Thank you
Ok, thanks :)
I believe this to be a dough cutter . Fantastic restoration it looks absolutely beautiful I love that you put the red pinstripe back on it and kept the original black !! I love the look of all the natural wood on it looks AMAZING !! 👍👍Attention to every detail !!
Thank you so much Robert :)
Another excellent restoration. I appreciate the care and attention you give to these detailed restorations. The example you set is useful to other restorers. I will guess that this machine was used to cut pasta or dough, and would have been used in a bakery. Thank you, and smiles from the USA.
It's probable . Thank you Pat :)
I always love your work and how you show great care and detail, in returning items back to their original glory. I love your channel and alway look forward to New videos.
I'm very happy about that, thank you very much Debbie :)
Fabulous job and result. Love the video trickery and natural sounds.
🤔😉 Thanks :)
It looks ready to slice ribbon candy, nougat or fudge again. I remember ribbon candy was special for the holidays. I've seen straight and bow ribbon candy. Great work!
Thank you Rick :)
Obrigada. Infelizmente, eu também não.
Wonderful restoration. It looks like one of those machines used for cutting something into strips. Anyway, it looks much better and works like a charm as well. Excellent work.
Thank you so much George :)
Saludó desde la República Dominicana excelente vídeo
Gracias desde la República Checa :)
Loved the restoration!!
Thank you :)
You are wonderful in restoring old machines keep up the good work 😘😚
Thank you so much :)
I think it was used for cutting large squares of softer candies, like a block of fudge or taffy. Cut it one direction then give it 1/4 turn and cut it again resulting in perfect squares.
(However I have no proof but from all the candy making and cutting machines I can see from the 1800s, that would be my guess) You might look up the patent # too. I hope you find out what it is! Thank you for the awesome video!!
Thanks for the interesting theory :)
No napadají mě nudle nebo fleky... Díky za další super video.
Taky si to myslím, děkuji :)
Nice job. It looks like an old confectioner's machine. I've seen similar for a step in the process of forming.
Thank you Stephen :)
This is for Noodles. You put the dough on the table and make it flat with the first roller and then the roller with the little round blades cuts it in stripes. You can still buy very similar machines today.
Greetings from Germany,
Marcus
Thank you Marcus :)
I was going to say either a pasta machine or a paper shredder. I love the fact that it was used to make delicious caramels! Beautiful restoration! You should try to make some caramels with it!

I have a fellow leather worker that has one hat looks just like it. Has different width spacers between the blades to vary the width of the straps from the hide you run through it. They still make & sell new ones similar to that one. Amazing how the same tools can be used for so many different applications.
Thank you so much Charles :)
This came out fantastic!!! ❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Edit: Maybe it was a slicer for candy? 🤔
Thank you. :)
You might ask the guy who runs @Lofty Pursuits. He's quite knowledgeable on old candy equipment. Nice job!
Thank you for the recommendation :)
It is definitely a pasta roller/cutter. That cutter set is for a wide pasta, like a tagliatelle. No doubt there were other, interchangeable cutter sets originally available for other sizes. Similar ones can be purchased from China today, though I'm sure they wouldn't match the quality of an original one like that. I have a smaller, Italian made one that is only about 15cm wide. I would love to have a wide one like that.
Thank you for answer. At first glance, everyone we approached said it was on the noodles. I wouldn't put my hand in the fire for that, the height of the rollers is adjustable from 1-5 mm, the rollers are difficult to replace and I can't imagine cleaning if the dough sticks. Hopefully someone who has seen this machine and knows exactly its true use will write. :)
Pretty old phone !!!
Maybe even an early money dispenser ...
