    Dear Samsung fans who are often far too quick to jump the gun: this is a _positive_ review of the S23 Ultra. I REALLY LIKE THIS PHONE. I'm even considering switching to it full-time.

    S pen casual user, I use it for:
    1. Working in spreadsheets
    2. Selecting parts of whats on the display and pinning them to the screen while i use the calculator or while I transcribe the info in another app.
    3. Some games like sudoku
    4. Writing on screen shots
    5. Doodling and taking notes while I'm bored in meetings
    6. Occasionally tacking photos when I want perfect stabilization, without touching the screen.
    7. Signing documents once in a while.
    It's the kind of things I might not use every day but at this point it's so useful to me often enough that I would be sad to live without it.

    You do realise the double press to activate the camera is just a short cut for security, otherwise anybody that takes a photo would have access to all your photos. It's no real hardship to unlock the phone with the FPS or Face ID.

    S-pen is gimmicky? It's an accessory that comes for free as opposed to paying $100 for an Apple Pencil. You can draw and write on the go, operate the camera from far, use as a pointer while web browsing and much more. This is far from a gimmick.

      Styli on phones are niche (rather than gimmicks). There is a hardcore superfan group that thinks it is great, say 0.01% of the phones sold every year, but the reality is, few of us care. Great for you, but a waste for me. I would prefer a Note for you and an Ultra with a 6000mAh battery and no s-pen. Remember LG, the other stylus phone maker, well they proved that pen support is not what people buy...by going bust.

      @rghl5617 Рік тому

      @andyH_England that's a good point, I would also trade a bigger battery for the s-pen that can be an external option, but looking at most high-end phones the past few years with a similar screen size, they either have the same battery size or smaller. Rarely do phones hit 6,000 mAh.

    Thanks for the review Mark! As an iPhone 14PM owner since launch, I decided to give the S23U a try. I’ve had it a couple of days now, am setting it up mostly to this point, and for me, the improvements made from the S22U are making this a real pleasure. I feel like this is a huge push on the iPhone honestly because while it doesn’t necessarily blow past the iPhone in terms of some things like video quality or technical benchmark speeds, it does truly come toe to toe with the iPhone and that is a huge accomplishment. The iPhone feels old and stale compared to this device, in my experience so far. I consider that a win for Samsung.

      Nice summary! Yeah I have had iphones for a while too. And frankly it feels like the same shit year after year. Partly because they reuse the same body style for like 3-4 generations and secondly because their innovation year over year just nothing to write home about. Feel greatly as tho they are relying on their cache and vast market share and oooh cant forget the imessage. If not for Imessage they wouldnt even have the market share in the US as they do now. Its nice to see that Samsung has stepped up their camera game and overall UI smoothness. Only thing I dont like about the Samsung phones is that they come preloaded with too much duplicate software of their own and the carrier bloatware. Thats why if I indeed purchase the S24U I'll likely get it straight for Samsung and the Unlocked version at that.

    • @rickray1701
      @rickray1701 Рік тому +1

      I purchased the S23U direct, for that reason as well as getting an exclusive color (graphite). So far mine is surpassing my expectations. I am actually enjoying not using the iPhone. I'm still figuring out the wearable situation, but it's not terrible. And I think almost all the duplicates can be disabled or removed. So you can pick what you want and get rid of the rest. The carriers are the problem with bloat for sure. The battery life is ridiculous. The cameras are fantastic for landscapes so far. I'm soon going to work the astro part of it. Truly a value this year.

I think the sound was much better, better noise cancellation, does not have that terrible high tinty noise like I phone does. I like iPhone video, it's great quality, but I think s23u is just better. I can also understand why calling the S Pen gimmicky "can" seem like a taunt to Galaxy users, though it's just a genuine personal opinion. The S Pen has been a long-established feature of Samsung flagships and integrated in everyday workflow of many users and my understanding is that it's past the point of being a fancy gimmick in terms of its vast functionalities and use cases.

Besides not having expandable storage. Not really a big deal for me though. Note 20 ultra was a beast too I never had any stuttering with it. The only reason I upgraded is for battery which I get almost twice the SOT with this phone. This is a 2 day phone for me which is excellent. The battery should degrade slower because I'm not charging as much. Hoping to get 4 years out of this phone unless there is good trade ins at the 3 year mark. Excellent review excellent phone. Mark, this is great content as usually, finally we can say that this is a Galaxy S phone with amazing battery life (3 days is normal stuff for me). I also appreciate improvement in video department comparing to S22 Ultra which I previously owed. Regarding photos from lock screen, it is allowing you to take another after preview when you will use gesture to go back, dont know where is a difference but it is at it is :D. Also regarding shutter lag, they provided update to Camera Assistant app with new feature called "quick tap shutter" which is slightly improving it. Other than that it is finally amazing phone, all weak sides of s22 ultra has been fixed and improved, loving it so far. All the best !

Huge number of people take advantage of S Pen....so think twice before you use the specific word for these kind of features...apple is not even a shadow of S23 ULTRA... still continuing with that boring face id and lightening port 2.0 and that ugly looking huge black spot hanging at the top...wake up dude !

    It really seems that you do not know how to use the S-Pen but to ... simply write up notes with it. It it so much bigger than that - it can take pictures, it can change cameras, it can change the currently playing song, it can create snippets off the screen, you can digitally sign documents with it, you can hover on items, you can use handwriting in search fields, you can draw with it, you can create notes just by pulling it out and immediately start writing on the screen (without an app), you can have air gestures ... the list goes on. Makes me sad that you just skimmed through it and decided that it was a gimmick.

    I completely agree benchmarks don't tell the whole story. Most Apple users go on about how iPhone has better chips and benchmark scores. While technically the A16 chip on paper is slightly faster, in day to day usage the snapdragon 8 gen 2 chip is every bit as fast and actually beats the iPhone on certain apps. That said, I'm not a brand loyalist, I simply use what works well. You know with all the upgrades with the s23 ultra if I'm considering getting a $1200 phone which I've never done before I'm very impressed. If this is an indication with the future of the snapdragon 8 gen series it means with each new year we will get much better thermals, battery life and especially on Samsung better standby time. To me one big word sums up why I prefer Samsung over Apple these days and it's innovation. iPhones while they are stable lately are super boring and limiting. Also, on iPhone even in 2023 you are very limited when it comes to customization and working with non Apple products. In my opinion this year may very well be the year that shifts more people to android with the s23 ultra. Especially those like me tired of Apple giving us the same phone year after year with one or two slight tweaks.

    You call the S-pen gimmicky because you are not used to using it or your daily life does not require it. Fine. However to say gimmick implies it's not of much use and is completely disingenuous and dismissive. To those who use the pen (like me) to take notes regularly for meetings, signing docs and editing videos it is not. It is so efficient and less clunky than doing things by hand especially trying to select certain things. What is absolutely brilliant is that you have such a HIGH FUNCTIONING stylus as an option and tucks away if you do not use it. Gimmicky is rude. Also the NOTE range was so damn popular that they had to bring the pen into the main phones somehow when they wanted to consolidate their line up and this shows how useful many people found it. If it was just slotted into the phone without real purpose I would understand but gimmicky is more akin to the Dynamic Island floating thingy that is being worshipped and the god awful on screen display attempted by apple just to catch up with the times but fail miserably. The S-pen however... - far from.
