  • Looking for a Job? I Give You the 5 Best Ways to Find a Job in Cyber:
I know many of you are struggling. I see your posts. I talk to some of you personally and know your battles well. I've been there myself. Sometimes it's the simple things that make a huge difference, so today I'm going to give you the top 5 ways to find a job in Cyber.
    1. LinkedIn Job Search - simply by doing a search for penetration tester, SOC analyst, GRC, and other keywords, you will find a cumulative of millions of jobs listed. LinkedIn does a great job of finding matches for you.
    2. CyberSN - by now you have probably heard of them. I've met many from this team personally and I can tell you they really do a great job of helping find jobs that match you. They have worked hard on breaking down different types of positions in cyber. Right now they have nearly 200,000 available jobs in Cyber on their site.
    3. Indeed - If you have ever done a job search, you have heard of indeed. This is the largest job search engine in the world. A relatively simple platform that will bury you in opportunity quickly.
    4. Dice - This site has been around forever. Mainly focused toward tech jobs, their platform and app is easy to use. Years back, I landed several contracts through this platform.
Tip before I go to number 5 - Job titles are chaos in cyber security. A Security Analyst could mean 20 different things. If you want to make your job search more productive, search for your interests (i.e Burp, Splunk, Vulnerability Management, Disaster Recovery, etc). Searching for your interests and talents will put you in front of the right opportunities. Stop searching for titles.
    5. Branding - Whether you like it or not, you are a salesperson. If you ever held a job, you've had to sell your skills and abilities to that employer to get hired. Who are you? What do you represent? What are your skills? What do you have to offer? These things together build a brand, which is you. I saved this one for last because it is truly the most important. Building your brand and networking will bring you far more leads than any search engine will.
Michael Jordan missed over 9,000 shots in his career and lost over 300 games, but we all know who he is. Stop being afraid to step on the court. I promise you will never win a single game if you don't take a shot. 🏀

8 years Cybersecurity experience here.. with a CIS degree and a cert (sec+)
This still haunts me… but I would recommend still applying anyways. The current job I have (cybersecurity analyst) stated they wanted the individual to have their CISSP.. which I don’t have.. and still don’t have 3 years later after taking the position.(Govt position with one of our fine states..)
Most job position posts are made by an HR individual with out a clue of what they really want or need.. so once again just apply. You never know. 🤷🏽‍♂️
    Edit:
FYI, Been researching this topic a lot recently, the moment a UA-cam channel puts out multiple interviews with people who have done what a lot of people (the audience) is attempting to do, aka get job in cyber, and tell their stories of how they did it… it will gain some momentum. But what do I know.. i just protect servers from hackers. Just a thought.

This is what I've found sooo frustrating as I graduated from school, got certifications, and polished off a resume to find an entry level job. The job postings clearly state that it is entry-level, but they're asking for something outrageous like 5+ years of experience in infosec, a CISSP or CEH, a masters degree, starts off in 3rd shift, and they're only paying ~50k/year.. on salary to boot. I guess that's what happens when HR is underqualified.

  • @theitechlab

I'm a lucky IT guy--I got into the field with zero experience, certs, and only one year into my IS degree. I've shifted between help desk, jr. sys admin, and now working on a specialty ERP system internally. With that said, I am still trying to figure out my next steps, and cyber was one of those. It really is frustrating when I look through listings and see this nonsense.
I know cyber is not an entry-level job (you need some experience in networking and IAM, for example, to understand how to protect those things from intrusion/exploit), but seriously--who is going to want to start at "entry level" with 10-15 years of experience? At that point, most people with that much experience are going to be mostly settled in a career path and likely make well over 6 figures. They're not going to take a $30k+ pay cut to get a cyber job.

This is and has been trend across industries in general for many years now. Most hiring managers are too selective nowadays. Says more about them than the candidates. I couldn’t care less about what kind of credentials a person has. I only seek 3 things in people, when assembling a team competency, intelligence and the ability to put your team above your own efforts. Being a jack of all trades who has worked in very specialized jobs, under tough circumstances I know how overly strict hiring standards can waste a lot a time and money for a company, when there is a lot of talent out there.
