Federer is right. A two year ranking system will make tennis more boring. And make the top players stay at the top longer than their play would otherwise say. 52 weeks is long enough. I think tennis is perfect as it is. We don't need BIG changes. Small adjustments here and there can be useful. But nothing big as a change of ranking system. Maybe have better pay for the lower ranked players? I don't have any big complains with the game as it is.

Well said Roger. Not just thinking of the top players - himself included - but the tour as a whole. Of course Rafa would want the two-year ranking system so he can take huge swaths of time off and use it to rest his body - the body that is writing the cheques for him seeing as he doesn't have the talent that Fed has - which he pretty much admitted.

Exactly. Everything is best of 2 sets except the Slams if he stays hurt that's really on him. I agree with Federer, and it makes sense. Ppl are already bored with the top 4 being there so long, imagine if it went to a 2 year ranking system. That would be insane. They've already slowed down every court possible. I say if they go to 2 years, speed all the courts up. Federer is looking out for the guys up top, which seem to be doing fine in terms of staying at the top & the guys at the bottom.

It would have been better if Roger had supported the prize money increase to lower ranked players when they discussed it in 2011. Including the shortening of the calender like players were suggesting.
Rafa was advocating for reduction of tennis tourneys on hard court since he was getting injured and other players as well.
Now Roger understands what getting injured is all about. Covid led to this 2 year ranking system.
Prize money increased for low ranked players.
2012 Rafa rant before AO, let us in on all these discussions happening in players Union.

@CommanderSwedePlays But this suggestions are all coming from the top 3 ranked players and they all seem self-serving Nadal, Novak, and Murray don't seem to care about the lower players if you ask me. Also they can't afford to miss some of the little event and play like 18 tourney a year. I think the players want to fix the prize money situation more so then the events. By the way who plays in the rain play is stoped

I think you are not aware of how hard Rafa, Murray fought for low ranked players.
The big public fight between Rafa and Roger (2012) was mainly about that. Rafa came out and attacked Roger for being closed minded calling him 'Perfect'
Roger didnt support changes from reducing tennis calender, tourneys on hard court and prize money increase.
Roger didnt comment, support any of these changes players were fighting for. Led to the Rafa rant.
Rafa, Murray fought for players in players Union. Look up articles on this matter, very interesting. Cant remember all the details though✌

@CommanderSwedePlays What are you talking about there the ones without a voice, the top guy make tone of money and have a lot of extra perks. If you not in the top 20 then it very hard to make a living off of tennis because you pay for everything yourself. that include coaches, plane fare, hotel fees, insurance, family, living, etc. The tennis year is fine, the top players are in control of there own schedule so what the problem.

Too bad he's currently NOT being fair to all players and having all their interests at heart, what with the Union thing and all that. I guess, again, he's thinking of the lower-ranked players when he's against unionizing, but nonetheless, that's not ALL players.

Tell Nadal to skip all those Exos which he played more then anybody else in the top 4 last years. also skip Monte Carlo and Barcelona since there not mandatory if he so hurt or exhausted

Federer has good character and is not selfish at all. He knows that no player is bigger than the sport. The other top players are extremely selfish to think the public only wants to see the same old boring match ups. I often root for the upset just to see some new faces get a turn. A sport will die w/o turnover. Those spoiled players need to get real & earn their way by the rules if they can't then retire & move on.

    • @Zain-mg3yk

Roger is not selfish, but has a limited view of what other players experience. Injuries are a huge issue for other players and would benefit from the 2 year ranking system.
Now Roger knows and understands what injuries do to your career.
He didnt appreciate the damage of hard courts, long congested calender, since he is so good . If ure injured, u have time to look at all factors that adversely affect you. You get a lot of time off to assess.
At least the protected ranking system helps injured players. There are fewer mandatory tourneys for players who've bn on tour longer etc.
People who maybe more prone to injuries due to the accumulation of playing on hard courts over the years.

@ca1houn Thats not true, it has a lot more supporters and it doesn't have to affect the lower ranked players. And that's the main reason Murray is a supporter, I forget what event, but there was one which it was raining the day before the matches, and they figured it would dry up before play began so they got everything set up with the networks, but then it was still really wet when it was time to play and they were forced to play anyway to appease the networks

  • @CommanderSwedePlays
    @CommanderSwedePlays 12 років тому

@ca1houn There are certain mandatory tournaments, they're not 100% in control. And helping the bigger guys doesn't have to affect the lower ranked players, a middle ground can easily be reached....but there's something to be said if players are forced to play in hazardous, rainy conditions just to keep networks happy.

That s simply logical and fair, that s important to think about lower ranked players who dont have
the same money as the best one, i would be so difficult for them.

Monte Carlo and Barcelona has the best surface for Nadal and also Nadal loves those 2 places. It is his one of the most favorite places to be in, especially when he has such a huge record of winning there.

Is it possible for Federer to regain No. 1 ranking if this system has been implemented long before?

  • @Vesciroth

Nadal should skip Barcelona but not Monte Carlo as it is a Masters 1000.

Well... tough luck, if you ask me. He gotta decide what's more important to him.
But, more importantly, he gotta stop trying to change stuff so that it works in his favour instead.

@ca1houn It's not just Nadal. I think a solution can be found easily if Fed would just be a little more open to suggestions and change.

Nadal wants everything to change because he can't stay fit, the board is looking out for all players, top and bottom.
