    "less than 20 FPS - a slideshow" - this is how I played most of the games between 1997 - 2001 and really didn't care about the framerate, I was just enjoying the game, the storyline :-)

      to be fair, most people were having that experience with consoles as well until the most current generation started; the 360/PS3 gen was especially notorious for really bad performance.

    Still rocking an AMD A10-6800k @4.8ghz. Originally bought a Radeon 6670 to do hybrid crossfire and didn't last long. Rocking an Asus Nvidia 960 and it's alright til this day. Will upgrade to a whole new system in a year or so but for now it works for any game I like.

      I wouldn't say is a beast, I had one of those but with an FM2A75 motherboard (the A85 chipset used in this video came later).
      I bought it because I didn't have money for a dedicated GPU at that time, and AMD processors cost way less than Intel ones.
      It served me well, I got a dedicated GPU almost a year later.
      I still have it in a closet, I put it in a new case last year because my wife needed a PC to work at home. It didn't perform as good as I remember for regular office work, I think Windows 10 now needs more cores to run smoothly nowadays.
      My wife has a new PC now so it is back into the closet.

    Lovely spring saturday morning, Hot coffee and Phils new video. Life is good! :)
    Interesting platform for a HTPC & XP gaming rig.
    I am using a R3 2200G right now as HTPC (2x8GB 3333MHz cl.16 Samsung mem and it kicks arse in GPU performance), but I would really like a MB with a PCI slot - for my High Fidelity (studio-grade) Soundcard. I see that this MB has one PCI. But of course the A10 APU is a lot slower all around. So a compromise to think about. But have not yet been gaming on my HTPC (Though is the PC we use the most in the house) ;)

    You should OC the NB, for RAM @ 2133 you need to get the NB to at least 2200 or 2400 Mhz. Just by increase the NB clock you can increase your memory read, write, copy performance by up to 1GB/s for every 200 MHz increment in the NB alone. The Piledriver FX also act very similarly, fast RAM and fast NB can net you good chunk of FPS increase and response time.

Only got rid of it because as time went on it would run hotter and hotter (yes I changed out the thermal paste, know what I'm doing, etc.). Windows 10 was just demanding too much of it maybe. It was sold with Windows 8 and got the free upgrade I believe.

    Hi Phil!! Good video, I had (I still have it indeed, but its not in use right now!) one of them, back in 2013. I bought it recommended by someone who promised me that with it I wouldn´t need a video card. Ok that was not true, by any means so 6 months later I ended up adding a gtx 660, so I really missed a big part of it, you know, the integrated graphics. Back then, I heard lot of people hating it for not being more powerful than an i3 in single core task and stuff, but my experience with this proccesor was really good, it never threw my 660 back and bottleneck, if there was some, was not really noticeable. So when retirement time came in 2017 (I was about to go intel but ryzen fell from the sky and I couldn´t resist, stilll goin strong with AMD in the third gen now, with a r5 3600. Not a fanboy) the a10 5800k left a good taste in my mouth, it was a good chip that fullfilled it purpouse very good. So its still in a box with other things, waiting to be awaken again for some proyect like a retro machine in the future or why not, as a secondary pc if needed!!

    I had the a10-5700 for over 3 years with Win7 and beta Crimson Drivers, it worked perfectly. I didn't have any installation problems, even between formatting every 12 months or less. It now serves as an office Pc at my parents' house. It allowed me to play a lot of AAA games of the time on 720p-low, and some down to Lowspecgamer settings.

    ATI/AMD drivers use specific versions of InstallShield, which only work under XP-SP0, or XP-SP1 or XP-SP2. You can sort of directly install from the hidden drivers directory but it doesn't install the dependencies right. Also the drivers on the website were never well maintained after the 2005 ATI acquisition by AMD. The best drivers are the ones that came with the hardware on a CD. I'm very stubborn and have kept trying to figure out ATI vs XP-SP combinations.. but I understand when people give up. DirectX version 8, or 9.0c also matters quite a bit. I wish there were a place to share and trade driver information, but vogons is the only place I know about right now.

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  4 роки тому

      It's funny though, the driver does install all the other components, just not the display driver. It does install CCC though.

      @@philscomputerlab Yeah.. I know exactly what your seeing. I couldn't believe it for a long time. Then I tried XP-SP0 and it went through smoothly. Its not just exclusive one-way, the updated installer won't work on XP-SP0 either.. so its maddening. You have to find the specific XP-SP0 installer and know it, or the specific XP-SP1 installer and know it. The CDROM labels kind of "hint" at it with their versions but not all the time. It drives you crazy. But once you know it for certain you can work around the problem. XP service packs changed the kernel, so XP-XP0 versus XP-SP2 are actually different operating systems, ATI was tightly partnered with Microsoft so they could take advantage of things Nvida and other graphics makers could not.. that appears to have had benefits and penalties when releasing drivers. They are very tightly tied with the specific version of XP installed, SP0, SP1, SP2 ect.. You can't assume the latest driver was supported with XP-SP2 because the driver may have ended updating before XP-SP2 was available, it could be a XP-SP0, or XP-SP1 driver. Also tightly bound to the kernel problems could creep in trying to update the next SP version after installing the driver. Microsoft used ATI hardware to prototype their operating system, so ATI is fastest and best.. but it had problems this many years later when we want lots of flexibility between major service pack releases that were many years apart. I use an imaging tool like Macrium reflect to install XP-SP0, or XP-SP1, SP2 and test the driver and label it as for use with that version only. But that might add a Lot of overhead for you.

    Phil! I had a similar problem with older AMD drivers installation back in the day. I don't know if that's exactly your case, but it worked fine for me by installing Microsoft's Visual C x86 and x64 packages before the AMD drivers. Not sure if 2010, 2012 or 2013, but some of those versions would fix it for me

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 4 роки тому +2

      I did it for about a year, and it gave a small boost in performance but not a lot as you have to use something like an MSI Radeon R7 250 2GD3 OC Graphics Card - 2 GB DDR3 - 128-bit - 1050 MHz setup with the DDR3 RAM being a bottle neck, and you will need GOOD cooling on the APU, as your average temps running something like SONIC All Stars Racing Transformed for example will be around 50c - 70c on a 1080p 60hz monitor. You are better off running the APU as a CPU, and dropping in something like an AMD R7 560 4GB GPU, and running a good Linux distro like Manjaro MATE so there is a bit less overhead compared to Windows 10.

    Really interesting benchmark. Moreover, as an A10-5800K owner, we didn't talk about overclocking the chip to get more performances (Ocing the GPU, requires a DVI connector, search for Christian Ney guide), and its undervolting. You can easily undervolt it at 1.10 V and still don't have problems.

    Literally my son's old APU. I upgraded my rig and gave him my 7700k. He was able to game just fine on the A10 once I found someone selling a GTX 960 for dirt cheap. He mostly plays Fortnite and it did fine once it finally loaded in, but when joining a match he would join right as the battle bus launched. Without the GPU he couldn't play much of anything at playable frame rates. He's quite happy I upgraded and he got my old board & ram though
