Renovating an old house has many complications. Rain and rendering are not a good combination. At least the well and dam will be happy. #fyp #renovation #portugal
Good to see you again in another excellent video, sharing the progress of the village house (despite the rain) and future projects... I loved seeing Eddie perfectly integrated and HAPPY! 🤗 As for the...(🥗+🥪+🍳) ... 👍😋💭
Goodness Andy you have a great eye for detail and perfection. Think it may partly come from your creative background. More power to your elbows. Really look forward to your little videos. If nothing else it takes me away from this difficult world, if only for 20 minutes.
Of course making the rendering is rewarding. Now the rain may come, but I hope you and James will be working inside mostly. You're doing really well, Andrew.
Andy, I moved into a house (in the Uk) and the back garden was not fenced, it had a public footpath to one side and the back faced the local recreation ground. And for 20 years the garden had been used as the local tip ! So like you after it rained I would go out and pick up the glass that came to the surface for many years after I had cleared the garden. ! Not good when you had 4 children under the age of 10 !
I think I'm as excited about the courtyard as you are, Andy. That's my favorite part of the place. My imagination has potted plants, colorful, comfortable furniture, and your friends and family having a party with lots of food and drink. Looking good!
Hello Andrew, shame the digger man has to be put off as I always enjoy seeing him help with your transformation! I love any videos to do with your well so that will be coming up to enjoy. Every time I hear ‘higher than the sky’ playing in your videos I always think of your earlier video with it playing and you travelling along then lane from your place on buck is it, your red tractor. Cracks me up each time. Thank you again for your video 🏴
Hello Andy 🙋♀️ It is that time of year when we get torrential , much needed rain 🌧🌧 Your Well and Pond will be filled up in no time. January and February are the coldest 🌬months. So your new burner will be in constant use. Lovely to see your dogs 🐶🐶🐶 and Eddie has certainly landed on his Paws!!🐶💕 Thanks for another interesting video 🤔📹
Wow Andy, I really admire your dedication on getting the outside walls done, it's starting to take shape nicely now, keep up the good work, take care 😘😘xxx
It looks like your doing great getting that rendering done. A long time ago I was in the Bay Area in California. There was an estate that had the terra-cotta roof. The place was painted a very light Terracotta light peach. The trim was the color of a penny that had gone green, sage. It was beautiful and something unexpected. Just an idea…
Hi Andy, James and Cristina. (You know who I am) Thank you for today spending a few hours with you all and seeing your project coming along in detail. Your commitment and pride in all that you’re doing to the house is very evident with fabulous results. The finish to the render with the final coat is excellent which shows the time spent getting your walls etc straight pays off and I know that rest of the project will be of the same quality. As you know I’ve got 45 years experience in Building & Construction behind me and I’ve rarely seen people work with the enthusiasm that all of you have which obviously shows in your work. I can’t wait to see it all finished when we next meet up and you can come and work with me on my house anytime. As I said anything you want anytime and I’ll be there, just call. Thanks again to all of you, I had a great time and learnt a lot , Mark.
Hi Mark, We tried to contact you but the number doesn’t work. Can you go into my ‘about’ page on my channel home page. You can get in touch private and we can sort out the number.
Wow that weather is really temperamental at the moment. Here’s hoping that I get a few dry days during my trip to Loulé next week. The courtyard is going to be fantastic when finished. My favourite part so far.😊
You make me laugh Andy your soooo impatient but im the same way so i do understand....gets things done tho.. house us voming alknv at a steady pace...I cantcwait till you do the courtyard...dying to see how that turns out....that butty looked delicious...made me hungry...
During the summertime those pieces of glass can cause a fire. I've seen that happening in France during the summertime. Dry gras and once over sudden a fire started because of a little piece of glass that worked as a magnifying glass together with the hot summersun.
Andy, Loved how you edited this video with your eagerness to finish a hard rendering job. You had me guessing wrong cause I thought, Oh no! It will rain & by George it didn’t. I was cracking up laughing at myself. Good thing you didn’t listen to me! LOL. You made my day, like always. So happy that you like to edit cause you do a fabulous job while working so hard! Cheerios from Michigan! ❤
I really enjoy the love you have for your land and delight in seeing your ideas taking shape, it makes for great watching 😊 Also I’ve been picking tiny pieces of glass out of my veg plot for 4 years now 🙄
Hi Andy, Just a little idea for a quick upgrade at your house : painting the upper part of the stair railings (and if you have the courage and the envy, maybe even the walls of the stairs...) Anyway, it's always a pleasure to follow you ! ;-)
Thanks for the update. It's always strangely meditative to watch you and your brothers progress on the stone ruin. I'm located near Seattle in Washington state USA. We've just received our first rain in over three months and it's been such a relief. I'm guessing you all feel the same relief to finally have rain come to the Algarve.
Hi Andy another interesting video like the cottage plastering nah 😂.just your luck in getting all that rain still you will get a chance to finish the walls.
Nothing like a cup of tea for motivation! Great work on the rendering Andy. The house will look so sharp when it is done. One question that might be worth contemplating is whether the pond level is determined by the water table. If it is then digging the pond out is a good plan. If it isn’t then digging it down below whatever impermeable layer (maybe a clay soil) is catching and holding the water might create a leaky pond where water disappears into the ground faster. Showering in the rain reminds me of swimming lessons at the local outdoor community pool when I was a kid. Haha it was less enjoyable at that stage of life. Once again a great video! Cheers until next week 😊.
Ah, the chicken coop. I have a feeling that soon we are going to be graced with such a video. Story: Walking the area around the Sydney Opera House a number of years ago, there was this Italian Cafe/Bistro with the customary slate sign outside and on it was written, listing what you could expect to order and the cost, among which was "a Cuppa-chino". Not sure if it was an Italian mistake or Aussie humour but it amused me profoundly. Hearing you mention your long awaited "Cuppa" made me think of it. Hope you ended up with yours, later on.
Thanks for the video. Every time I see that nice backyard, at the back of your project, I wonder if it would be worth setting up a good barbeque fireplace, chairs and table would be worth it for you all to have a mid-day lunch break to avoid the heat of the day and avoid having to cook when returning to the bus. Enjoy.
Have you considered using a hawk? You can buy them or make them from a square 18" piece of aluminium. You can put them them against the wall and trowel the render up the wall.
Unfortunately, the weather isn't looking great next week either. We are heading to Lisbon on holiday and was checking the weather. Fingers crossed, it will change.
Hello!, first time in your channel, and I love it. I am not an engineer nor a construction worker, but i did learn a lot with the first house I bought and I had to learn fast, (smile). I was lucky to have knowledge contractors who tough me the basics (smile). Later I bought a second home and it was satisfying making the changes and repair myself, with some help of course. I like the property you bought in video #27, seems to be the perfect place to live on your own on plenty. Please try not to sell it, maybe you see it as an income to buy another one but this land just seems perfect for future happy days. keep the good fun work, (smile).
Definitely not selling this one. I plan to turn this into a beautiful home for me and that was always my intention. In fact the next video (I’ve delayed) is about my home. Thanks for watching 👍
Another entertaining video. I am glad to see the update on the well. I am looking forward to the Well rebuild videos. How did your new roof fare with the rain last Thursday? It was torrential all day. Keep the vids coming. 👍
If you want more water in your well, you have to dig trenches, swales and berms on your land so that all winter rain gets sequestrated on your land and infiltrates into the ground... From the looks of it, most water from strong rainstorms in winter just washes of your land as surface runoff and very little infiltrates...
Hello Andy. I saw youre open well and I'm wondering why it doesn't have a lid. A few years ago a boy fell into a well, and died, because the well didn't had a lid. From that day the mayor ordered that every well must have a lid.It is now a law in Portugal.
To do: rainy day to do list e.g. internal doorways to get from house to courtyard? And what I learned this week: nothing ticked off the list until it is Cristina-verified (no problem here)
When I was watching the glass being picked out of the ground, I couldn't help but think of this type of compost sifter ( ua-cam.com/video/E4A4aTvl3yE/v-deo.html ). If you're putting raised beds into the area you have the glass in the ground, you could put down some weed control fabric around them. Then you'd be able to sift the soil, put that straight into the raised bed, use the gravel you are left with in the tray as pathway and also pick out the glass. If you had grids with 1/2" and 1/4" holes you'd be able to control the size of the stones you get. The only problem would be that this is so labour intensive that you'd probably rather buy soil and gravel. Maybe raking the ground with a strong rake and after it rains you'll be able to see more of the glass is the way to go for the short term.
That sandwich looked so yummy, I am tempted to make the same for lunch. I hope Andy was as impressed as we are when he watched his own video😂👌
Yeah, I was drooling...hit me right where it hurt. 😄.
Well done. Little and often works wonders sometimes.🥰
Almost there, and then the inside fitting out begins! 🌧️🌈🐕🐕🐕 We are all looking forward to see your ideas!
Andy your doing such a fabulous job 💞 big hug Xx

I’m so glad Eddie found a happy home. He seems like a lovely little dog.
The satisfaction of doing it yourself is worth waiting. It’s looking great 👍
Tfs your week🍻🍻🐶🐶🐶

The rendering looks absolutely marvelous.
You are a beast Andy, never stop.
The walls look amazing, everything top notch.
Have a good weekend.
Good job getting things done between the rain. The well will be beautiful when you get it done.
Of course making the rendering is rewarding. Now the rain may come, but I hope you and James will be working inside mostly. You're doing really well, Andrew.
You make great videos, Andy. I’m learning by watching a master builder. You may not consider yourself that, but many of us think so.

I thought I had cleared my garden beds but the glass bits and rocks seem to materialise out of nowhere. Your work is looking amazing 👍👍👍
Those doors you got might cover the well nicely. Temporarily. 👍 how nice to get RAIN !!! Digging out the pond is a great idea !💕👍💐
Most impressed with your determination and progress on the village house! Well done. Always look forward to your videos.

Your rendering at the beginning of this video is a thing of beauty.

Andy -- Are you going to put on your artistic hat and come up with a unique railing for the bottom of the exterior stairs leading to the roof?
There will be something. Inside too. 👍
Great job! You house is looking Good!
Loved the video Andy thank you. You did well dodging that rain. Looking good xx
Good progress even with the rain

Rain stopping play and getting in the way of outdoor jobs - must have felt like you were back in the UK this week Andy! Haha
😂

@@rusticcrow Good News!!!, Thanks!..
Another entertaining video.
I am glad to see the update on the well. I am looking forward to the Well rebuild videos.
How did your new roof fare with the rain last Thursday? It was torrential all day.
Keep the vids coming. 👍
No problems. Rain also cleaned the roof 👍
@@rusticcrow bonus. That saves you a job.

Yep, got plenty of those. The well water is from the water table. Very little rain runs off my land. 👍
You will definitely be glad to Exit that Rendering ..😁

Because it’s not finished and it’s on private land. When finished it will along with a fence. Then I’ll be the only one with a cover. 👍
Do you have any swales feeding into the pond. They are key to collecting and retaining water.
It was built at the lower section of the rocky hill. Gravity and water table.
🤓👍
Worried about those doggies, Andy. Could they fall into the open well? Maybe a grid over it - for the sake of safety?
They won’t 👍
Looking forward to #96 - when is it due...
Tonight 👍
That's a lot off rendering, but on the end off the day andy it will pay off. Good progress anyway even with the rain.
