Given Geri's apparent age, and the shopkeeper's apparent age 12 years after Geri's Game, she could easily be Geri's daughter.
I was thinking something similar, also he could easily be her brother or just a close friend.

Yeah, I was thinking the shop keep was his daughter too. She looks like she's in her late 60's maybe early 70's whereas when we were introduced to Geri, he was already geriatric. Ohmahgoodness, that's brilliant. Anyways, it has already been at least 10 years in universe since Geri was introduced. I think he was already 80-90yo when Geri's game came out, so he would be at least 90-100yo if he was still alive in universe.

I just want to say that a bugs life and toy story 1&2 are my favourite childhood movies and I watched the VIDEO TAPES from beginning to end (including previews because I could)

I never thought I would say this, but man Geri must've been the most lesser known, if not the most underrated Pixar character that ever existed. I couldn't believe that he wasn't given enough recognition as he deserved. But in the end he had a good run for time in Pixar nonetheless. RIP Geri, we'll miss you, and you'll always be remembered!

Geri was a frail old man, so I think he died onscreen in Toy Story 2 when Al pushed him to the ground so he could look at the newly repaired Woody. Plus we never saw Geri again after that scene.

Counter argument to the shopkeeper being Geri's wife: why didn't she play chess with him if they were a couple?
Uh because he already had a chess partner?
Perhaps for whatever reason they just weren't around each other that day, maybe because of work or they just spent a day having time by themselves - it's actually healthy for couples to dedicate time to that. We don't know the context of the short.
Alternatively, he was practicing with himself to get the edge on her later, haha.
Speaking as a widow whose husband loved chess: one reason we had a happy marriage was because we never played chess together. 😉 (We tried it once. Very bad idea.)

J, after watching this I looked through every scene Geri has been in for Pixar and he ALSO doesn’t wear a ring. Why is that? You could say they didn’t want to animate a ring for that first short, but by toy story 2 it wouldn’t be a problem, especially when we know how detailed Pixar is

Another thing for the ring thing is that not every couple wears their wedding rings on a regular basis. My parents don't.
Actually if she came out with no voice it increases her price as an antique due to her being defective so they might not have even tried to fix her
That is half the reason it is so hard to believe she never sold the other half is that talking toys are annoying. :)
He also man not have been skilled enough with the electronic workings. He was an artist at the cosmetic part of doll restoration. Not to mention that it may be very hard to get replacement parts for the old voice boxes.

Isn't it easier to theorize that maybe Gabi Gabi is still broken not because he couldn't find a replacement for the voice box but simply because he died before he was actually able to do it? Maybe that's why she knows exactly what her problem is because she was the last toy Geri examined before dying: he identified the problem but died before he could actually fix it.

But the problem is that geri's game represents how a man finds a companion in himself to cure his loneliness. The fact that he has a living breathing wife just doesn't explain his loneliness

Given his advanced age, it’s reasonable to assume that he would have passed away by the events of Toy Story 4. But that said, may he RIP.
I work as a freelance toy repair person and I have to say, Geri is one of my heroes because that scene in Toy Story 2 is part of what drove me to the business (the other part is that my grandfather was an antique toy enthusiast and got me hooked on them)
What I loved about Toy Story 4 is how deeply animated Gabby Gabby’s eyes are. Her eyes bounce up and down like a real life doll in her time

Considering that Geri wasn't wearing a wedding ring in either of his Pixar appearances, I say he was her older brother and it was a family antique store, perhaps inherited from their parents. So whereas she took over the business operations aspect, he went with the restoration part. Maybe he also did appraisals and acquired more merchandise from the folks who'd rather sell the antiques he came to fix up.

In language arts class we were doing a plot diagram on Pixar shorts. This was on of them and lots of them pronounced Geri like jerry instead of Gary. I was pretty sure it was Gary and you obviously agree with me. I know it's trivial, but you guys are the kings of trivial. By the way, great video. I always loved this short and I use the strategy of flipping the board around, every time i play chess.
He could also be the shop owners older brother, as you said he was already pretty old in TS2

Hey, I've got a question.
Toys with speech sound the same as toys as when they are "alive."
Toys that have mouths also have voices (Rex, Potato-Head, Forky).
Toys that don't have mouths are still alive, but can't speak (RC, Etch-a-sketch)
Why can't the ventriloquist dummies talk?
They have mouths and other toys without voice-boxes can speak.
Is it just a choice, or are the actually incapable for some reason?
It's probably a poetic nod to the fact that ventriloquist dolls are literally 'given their voice' by the ventriloquist.
My school was gonna do a summary on it and I was really freaking confused when one of the questions was “Why does Geri ask for his teeth back?”. We never got to see the short and I’m still confused to this day.
This is the first time I have watched anything involved with this short since my grandfather passed away. He looked like him a bit and now I am crying..

There is a Toy Story 4 short, it is called Lamp life and is about Bo Peep and what she done when she left Andy after Toy Story 2 but before Toy Story 3.
When I first saw the title of this video I totally thought y'all were going to go the route of Geri being whomever the character in the short was portraying on one of the sides of the chess match, but this honestly makes much more sense. Super cool theory!!

The first Easter Egg I ever spotted was Luxo Jr. in the logo. That was a very famous demonstration if indirect lighting back in 1985 at the SIGGRAPH conference in San Francisco. (Before that, lighting sources were always out of the view of the camera.)
They also had the Utah teapot in Toy Story. Both of which made me break out laughing.
I met the Pixar people in 1985. I think I talked to John Lassiter - I wish I'd asked for a job.
They showed their very first short, called "The Adventures of Andre and Wally B" and I asked them when they were going to make a full length movie. They said that it would be impossible. The two-minute short took 9 months of supercomputer time to render it.
