    2 years later, after playing Grim Dawn off and on I finally decided to look into damage types and how the hell they work lol. This video was absolutely perfect. At first I didn't want to watch a video that was an hour long BUT I'm so glad I did. Within the first few minutes I knew this was going to be extremely valuable. I've made so many mistakes that I was unaware of until I watched this video. Some I guess I can just respec and fix but others may as well be delete and restart the characters all together. Any old way, thank you so much for putting the time and effort into this video because you've just given me so much usable information to make my time in Grim Dawn so much more rewarding and fun.

      Thanks for the comment. Damage conversion is one of the features of this game where understanding the basics can massively improve your damage output, and not understanding the basics can completely mess your damage up and potentially wreck your enjoyment of the game without you ever knowing how/why this is happening.

    Great video man. This game is as complicated as Path of Exile when it comes to damage calculation and to know which skills affects which other skills and how lol. Still couldn't figure everything out that's related to damage after 450 hours into the game lol. The issue is that the developers didn't care much to explain how the damage works in this game. However I prefer this a thousand time over oversimplified arp games like diablo 3 which makes them boring to play cause there is zero depth into it.

    And here I am watching your "Damage for Dummies" video for at LEAST the 5th time, though I probably didn't respond some of the other times!!! I've got my pure soldier build up level 60 and 25,XXX damage using CADENCE and going for primarily PHYSICAL damage, but I'm just now realizing that I need to be adding in BASE damage of other damage types because PHYSICAL damage ONLY comes from the weapon!!! My other types of damage under the PHYSICAL tab are fairly decent, though PHYSICAL DAMAGE itself is over %1000, and I have VITALITY and CHAOS buffed to over %100. I also got a HELL of a surprise yesterday when I got notification that I'd FINISHED THE GAME!!! I was NOT expecting that!!!! Anyway, I've got to head off to work. Later.

    Well this is just phenomenal! You literally have the best GD content. Super happy I found your channel. Idk if you touched on this and I missed it, but is there any effect to having >100% damage conversion? Like, if I have 120% conversion, is that stronger than 100%? Or are they the same and anything >100% is wasted? Or are there enemy debuffs that can reduce conversion, so extra conversion can be useful?

    • @Arcadelife1
      @Arcadelife1  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the comment, it’s much appreciated.
      Exceeding 100% conversion doesn’t increase the damage (or have any other weird side-effect). However, if you’re converting more than one damage type the maths providing your end result will get a little complicated. As with every attack skill, put it on left or right mouse button (temporarily if you like) and look at the damage breakdown on character tab 2 for the mouse-button skill. Do not look at the values on the skill screen or by hovering over the skill bar because those values do not factor in conversion correctly (or at all in many cases). Enemy debuffs don’t affect conversion.

      The basic damage-converted-to-health in this game is based on ‘weapon damage’, so any damage done by your weapon or by skills that incorporate weapon damage. The type of damage is not important, although you don’t get life steal from damage-over-time, so you would get life steal from acid damage but not poison, for example.

    That's what I don't like about this game. The mechanics are too complicated for something so simple. The balance is terrible, the choice of element is a joke, the geometry and timing of damage is the same for all skills. Direct, radius from the player, radius from a point. Diablo had it quite clear. You never had to ask "how does it work?" And Diablo had a ladder of difficulty. GD's dynamic levels of monsters make all the leveling system pointless. You're never stronger, nothing changes as you progress. You're on an infinite treadmill that matches your speed. In D2 it was "how far can I get?". In D3 you know what T you're at, you know how good you perform and you decide when to move on. In GD you actually degrade each level. Monsters become stronger, you become a little stronger. If you forever stay at one level, you'll end the game no problem. I'm sure it's possible to beat the whole thing as lvl 1 with no masteries, just gears. A hobo speedrun. So all this complexity becomes a parody to actually good games like Diablo, Nox, Fallout or PoE.
    Not to offend the guide, I'm sure it has all the info. I'll listen when I get that much free time.

    • @Arcadelife1
      @Arcadelife1  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the comment, that’s all valid opinion and I absolutely agree about basic game elements being way too complex. However, the divisive nature of the game’s complexity is part of its charm 😂 - many players love the game because of the absurd complexity and others (occasionally me) get exasperated when something like ‘damage’ takes an hour to explain, and even then there’s missing information or mistakes or contradictions in the info provided.

    • @RedGallardo
      @RedGallardo Рік тому +1

      @@Arcadelife1 Sorry for venting. =) I'm spoiled by D3. They did everything right. As much as people complain about it, it's nearly perfect. With all the variety of playstyles and the difficulty ladder and replayability... I always knew what each leg is for, what a set does etc. In GD I spend my time looking carefully at the items I got last 5 min trying to compare and figure out what's better. Even with rainbow mod, it takes too long to understand what matters and what I need. Sorting junk is pretty much all the gameplay. Getting junk notes, which are considered the worst way of storytelling by most gamers, trying to figure out if any of this fanatical nonsense has any useful info... Digging through the skill trees, trying to understand what should I focus on and what is junk... Sorting, sorting, sorting. Not thinking, but sorting. Because the complexity and junk info makes it impossible to fit into one head to think through. Maybe if I played for years I could see the whole picture but then I'd have to tolerate this hell for years. What's the goal? None. No achievements that would seem sweet, no wish to continue this nevereending race of leveling up vs the monsters who are a carrot-on-string, always 2 levels ahead of you... Which is pity because mostly the game could be likable. It could be a masterpiece. But even with mods I failed to make it shine. Mostly mods offer faster leveling and that's where you see that level affects literally nothing. You could get all 100 levels from the first zombie and it would change nothing about the gameplay. You could get all the items for your IA and it would not change a thing. Sets in D3 change the whole gameplay, sets in GD give you 1 extra level to all skills... Sigh.
      Sorry. Not your fault, definitely. Thanks for answering. You rock. =)

      Sure Grim Dawn is complicated but the problem with Diablo 3 is that it is so simple that it is boring again. The big problem with Grim Dawn is that how damage works is nowhere explained you have to figure it out all on your own.

    • @RedGallardo
      @RedGallardo Рік тому

      @@Afura33 It takes years of living in D3 to get bored of it. It takes a few hours to try all Grim Dawn classes to see they are born boring. The game is afraid of letting you have fun. Can't move faster, can't hit everyone on the screen, can't charge huge damage... It's all mediated DPS, almost as if the game gave me no controls at all. My actions don't matter. I hold LMB and watch foes die. No matter what class I choose, there are no wrong actions. Foes die. I use basic attack - they die. I use aoe - they die just as fast. I use passive - they still die at the same speed. I use ultimate - they die as fast as if it was a passive. It's not a problem of not understanding damage. It's the problem of everything being irrelevant. As if my skill tree was in a different program and I was watching a "let's play", not affecting the video with my choice of skills\stats at all. That never happened in D3. I choose what class to play. Burn enemies with a beam, or slash point blank, or be a swirling death moving at high speed, or cause chain reactions, or jump from foe to foe, or throw something... Huge variety of skills, all different. Nobody tried to make them equal. Devs made the balance by analyzing the outcome. The speed of rifts in general. You may move slowly but you will deal great single damage, pushing through the bosses. Or you may run like crazy, but stop at every boss for a minute since you lack focused damage. So many builds to try and they change every season. In GD even the mod that adds 40 new classes feels bland. Same old shit, new cover.
      GD is needlessly complicated. It would be awesome if it was deep. But it's not, it's just annoying. Annoying adaptive system that makes my growth pointless, annoying flood of bonuses I have to keep in mind to know what item would be better. Annoying boss battles where nothing relies on me, since if I lack this mediated rating I lose no matter what I do. There's no tactic, only holding LMB and praying my heals are enough. Annoying forcing of tank play, I can't use the strength of a ranger class since all enemies simply teleport to me and start a melee combat. Then why did you even make the difference?! Make ALL fights melee, I don't mind. Just don't tell me I can be a gunslinger and then, surprise, "you can't shoot from afar, you have to DD point blank where all the damage is dealt". Guess what! I pick a ranger class to stay away from danger! I'm new! I need safety! Why does the game deny me that choice?! Why did you let me choose then? Literally no difference between all the play styles. And I tried it all. A mage, an inquisitor, a night blade, a warrior, a holy shield, a summoner, a demoman... That never happened in D3. I always knew what class I was. What build I was. GD is "press buttons - mobs will die". Any buttons, any mobs. Yuck.
