  • www.theukuleles... Joel Blechinger from Hawaii Music Supply shows us the process he goes through with each ukulele that we ship out. This video should help you understand the process but there is a learning curve to executing it properly so if you are going to try to do your own set up start with an inexpensive ukulele first! Setting up ukuleles is our specialty and we were gland to share our HMS Ukulele setup. There are no secrets with us. Just a lot of hard work!
    So what makes us qualified to teach this?
    I worked at Ko'olau Ukulele company doing setups for nearly 10 years and Joel did ukulele setups full-time with Music Guy Mic for 4 years. Between us we have set up many thousands of ukulele and have many more to go. If you would like your uke setup you can always bring it down to our shop.
    Aloha from all of us here at Hawaii Music Supply.

    I'm both amazed and impressed by how much work goes into the preparation of each uke they sell. This is very reassuring considering I intend on buying from you all quite soon from now. Thanks!

    What a fine video. And what a fun version of RAIN! Thanks.
    Any tricks for dealing with a fretboard slope downward towards the bridge from the body joint?

    • @HawaiiMusicSupplyTUS
      @HawaiiMusicSupplyTUS  Рік тому

      That's usually not an issue like it sloping up at the body joint but it can be a sign of dryness if the whole body is sinking a bit.

    Cheers for posting this video. I'm looking to fix bad intonation on my koa wood soprano uke but I think it may also have to do with a crack it has on the top so I'd need to look at that first. I bought it used with the crack for a great price and it doesn't compensate me to have it repaired, so I'd like to do it myself if you could help. The crack is subtle, follows the string orientation, has about 4,5cm and is located very near the bridge, almost touching it (less than 1mm away). The outer side of the crack is lifted and the inner side (near the bridge) is pushed down. The difference in height is about 0,5mm on the most noticeable part. The crack is very slim and the wood is touching from both sides, probably not allowing light to go through. I was thinking about leveling and gluing it but don't have a clue about the best way to do it so your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Do you check the intonation of your less expensive Ukes like Kalas with a tuner before shipping.
    It seems like lots of less expensive ukes play slightly sharp when fretted, even with light pressure. Is there an easy fix ... lowering the bridge height ... instead of trying to put in a 0 fret or something?

    I'd like to know two things: (a) how do you calculate how much has to be skimmed of the saddle and the nut? (b) why do you need to do both?

    • @GuitarNTabs
      @GuitarNTabs 7 років тому +4

      I see your post is a little old, but in case you're still looking for answers, then here goes.
      In order to make an ukulele, or any other stringed instrument, play great and not being hard to fret or play, it's important to check the height of the strings on the fretboard - also called "action".
      In order to know how much to take off of the bridge saddle, you'll have to measure the string height (action) and see where it's at. As mentioned in this video you could shoot for 2.5mm - 3.0mm, measuring at the 12th fret.
      If the bridge saddle is then too high, making the strings sit above the given measurement, then carefully take it out and sand it down a little. Do the sanding by hand, because often it's not that much material that needs to be removed. Remember to check your progress often.
      Check again to see where the action is at, and if the instrument is comfortable to play.
      Once the action at the bridge is set, then it's time to take a look at the nut. Remember, the bridge and the nut are two key factors for any stringed instrument to play great - therefore you'll have to adjust both.
      As explained in this video you'll then check the nut to see if the strings are sitting too high, or too low.
      You can measure, to see if the strings are too high, by pressing down at the 3rd fret, right up against the 2nd fret fretwire. Not directly on the fret, but beside it. Then, while pressing down at the 3rd fret, take your finger and gently tap the 1st fret, and see how much of a gap there is. Generally you'd want just a little bit of clearance, in order to let the string vibrate :-)
      Basically that's it.
      Hope this helps you out!
      Cheers!

    GEORGE HARRISON, EAT YOUR HEART OUT!
    I see now that your instrument has more to it, than just a little uk". Sounds good. And like you and your designer, you need good tuning in all positions! And, Lennon's when the rain comes. Good job!!!! love all the harmony. Who's doing all that? You?

    It doesnt seem my ukulele has been through the process of "Dressing the Frets" it looks just they just set it up and really didnt test it. Mine also has an pre-amp and the string buzzed crazy so had to loosen the pre amp on the side to get it to stop but the buzz still comes back after often.

  • @UDIGGRED
    @UDIGGRED 11 років тому

    Every other fret dressing ive seen has the fret board taped off and use a file to crown the frets. I dont see how just sand paper can do that. The sand paper is just for polishing them and im pretty sure that you scuffed up the fret board doing it this way

    It's sad that you pay money for a Ukulele and it's that far off the mark brand new. I'd buy one, get it checked and send it back if the manufacturer couldn't do any better job than that making it to spec's.
