    *Summary*
    * *Appearance:* Translucent, bluish, pale bump near the fingernail in the *proximal nail fold* (cuticle area). May be *ulcerated* or oozing.
    * *Microscopic Features:*
    * Pools of blue *mucin* under the epidermis (outer layer of skin).
    * Often resembles a small ganglion cyst located in the *proximal nail fold*.
    * May or may not have a connection to the underlying joint.
    * Usually lacks a *synovial lining*, instead has a dense layer surrounding the *mucin*.
    * Can have variable inflammation, *ulceration*, and reactive changes.
    * Sometimes mucin washes out during processing, leaving an empty cyst-like space.
    * Mucin can leak into surrounding dermis, mimicking focal cutaneous mucinosis or a *cutaneous myxoma*.
    * *Diagnosis:*
    * Even if the classic cyst structure is not seen, the presence of mucin in a bump from the *proximal nail fold* is highly suggestive of a digital mucous cyst.
    ## Glossary:
    * *Proximal:* Located closer to the center of the body. In this case, the part of your finger closer to your hand.
    * *Nail fold:* The skin fold that overlaps the sides and base of your fingernail.
    * *Synovial lining:* A specialized tissue that lines the inside of some joints and produces fluid that helps the joint move smoothly.
    * *Mucin:* A thick, slippery substance that acts as a lubricant in the body. It's similar to mucus.
    * *Ulceration:* A sore that forms on the skin or a mucous membrane, often with a breakdown of tissue.
    * *Cutaneous Myxoma:* A benign (non-cancerous) skin tumor characterized by an overgrowth of cells that produce mucin.
