The Nikka from the Barrel is a blend of Single malt and grain whiskey from Yoichi, Miyagikyo, and Coffey still whisky. You should be able to get notes from all 4 standard bottles. It also may have single malt from Scotland (Ben Nevis). With a bit of water I think it blows away Yoichi/Miyagikyo and the two Coffey expressions.
Love, love, love the Yoichi and the Miyagikyo! I enjoy them both very much. Hikiki 21 is mindblowing - please try it if it's ever possible. I love all of these although Nikka Days and Nikka From the Barrel are my least favorites. I would also take the Coffey Coffee Malt over the Nikka Days and the Nikka from the Barrel. The Coffee Malt whisky is lovely. I really like the Nikka Pure Malt. Terrific info and video!! P.S. Let's take a pass on Jim Murray! Cheers!! 🙂
Yes... nice drinkthrough.... near the bottom of my 700ml of Nikka Coffey Grain and recently enjoyed glass of Nikka from the Barrel. So delicious. I am shocked at the size of bottles you guys get... I can only get the 500ml of Nikka from the Barrel in the market I am in; and forget about Nikka Coffey Malt...not available. Same goes for Taiwanese Kavalan.
For better or for worse, bottle size is regulated by law and 500ml isn't one of the options in the USA. Sometimes we get 750ml instead (like the Nikka FTB) and sometimes we get 375ml as a replacement. (That Boutiquey Whisky Company.)
Another BIG thank you for this drink through. I was curious about Nikka. I’m very familiar with Hibiki including the 30. I’ve tried the Coffee Grain and enjoyed it. Now, however, I have to hunt down the Nikka 12. Keep up the great work!
12 year for 100$? I can buy it in here in Israel but it's at about 320$! Right now from the barrel looks to be the best bang for your buck at 65$. Israel is expensive...
if you are referring to the nikka from the barrel thing is its not cask strength the name from the barrel refers to the blend being finished for a few extra months after blending in oak casks to let the blend marry
Great drinkthrough. I appreciate you guys giving us more perspective about Japanese whiskeys. It's definitely an area I'd be interested in exploring. Any info on barrel entry proofs on these or Japanese whiskeys in general?
Interesting question! Not sure about entry proof - but it may be closer to the 110 range. I believe the Nikka "From the Barrel" was meant to show the flavor at or near the entry proof -- so it could be around the 51.4% for Nikka - but not sure.
I was waiting for this. You guys should do a live show and is there a playlist that sorts out the videos for diamonds, gold etc... Or something just on your website.
The gentleman to the far right is the intellectual reviewer that we all need if we're sober watching this night imagine this would be a hilarious video review to watch while sipping Annika while considering whatever when you may want to consider investing in but the way that he describes things from the opening to the top it's profound and it's well done
Newbie here. What would suggest to start with from the Nikka whiskey lineup? Don’t know anything about whiskey. Looking for something to drink while enjoying company and watching some football. Something relaxing and not punchy.
Dillon made fun of Dutch pronouncing Miyagikyo incorrectly. But Sumimase my friend, you said Hukushu? You mean HAkushu . Maybe 8 straight drinks might have made you slur a bit. Have no doubt in your knowledge on Japanese whiskeys though. It was a really fun Drinkthough episode. Kudos to all of you! Nikka has been always good to me. Their discontinued Pure Malt whiskey must have been the most value added whiskey ever though. It was less than $10. Currently Kirin's Fujisanroku ($14) is probably the most value added one though. Thanks for your fun work! Cheers!
Do you guys actually finish all the whiskey you pour? I just see you guys blending in the glass at the end of each episode, I’m just curious what happens to all that whiskey.
I've tried over and over but I get almost nothing from Nikka from the barrel. It just offers no taste, basically. It's the only Nikka I've tried, so I might try the pure malt, based on your recommendation here. I don't think I like blends overall, though. I found Monkey Shoulder to taste almost nothing as well, though it's so recommended by everyone
I have bought and tried tons of different scotches last several months. 14 year really seeming to be what I like very well. JW Blue to Oban, to Glenmorangie The Quinta Ruban, to name a few. My first shot at Monkey Shoulder was nothing remarkable. The more I drink it the more I like it. I tend to drink it after I have a few or several of better/ more expensive scotches. It’s actually pretty decent. I have hated scotch for years. I just couldn’t get used to it. I tried JW Blue, the 6-7 shot bottle. It created a scotch monster in me! I have polished off several different bottles of various brands last few months.
I’ve never liked whiskey. After getting into undosed cask strength rums my palate has changed and I decided to go back to whiskey. I still don’t like bourbon (maybe that will change), scotch is ok (a little bland for me), I enjoy finished ryes, but based on your review I picked up the Coffey Malt and HOLY CRAP is that good. Now wondering if I should pick up the Pure Malt…
Dillan is the master taster, because the biggest part in pure Malt is miyagikyo. I bought it a month ago in France for 33 eur. Should have bought mooooore
While watching bourbon guild, listening to your stories and talk in general I did have sometimes the impression that you have extra pair of balls attached to your livers. Now I know that I was wrong, as your liver-balls must have balls of their own too and only God knows how far this balls-on-balls-chain goes. :D
DILLON! you are absolutely wrong about yoichi...its the best of the 3 single/pure malts....Its better than any scotch of the same age range and thats incredible...
I'm used to bourbon not blended type. Just bought Nikka from the barrel at my local Costco mostly because I like the bottle and the price was around 58 bucks so I thought what the hell give it a shot. Wow this is not what I'm used to. Reminds me of cheap Johnny Walker Black the guy in the video was right it like if you want to get punched in the face. This is worth 20 bucks in my opinion. I'll stick to my Old Forester.
Just tried my 1st nikka product from the barrel. Nothing close to American whiskey. It taste like scotch whisky. Come to find out it even had coloring added. Not saying it's bad buy 60 plus bucks not what I was expecting in flavor profile. From the barrel is a blend nor a single barrel.
I really wanted to get into Japanese whisky but tasting the Taketsuru Pure Malt was insanely disappointing for me. I wish I could taste whatever these guys are tasting but to me it honestly tasted like piss. Comparing it to the Dalmore 12 year is night and day for me. The Dalmore had so many interesting notes for me to enjoy both on the nose and drinking it. If anyone knows a really good Japanese whisky that compares to Dalmore I’d love to try it. I really want to add one to my collection but I had a bad start and am hesitant about what to pick up.
Omg “straight talk from Dillon” had me cracking up each time

Wow what a review guys, seriously this is you best lineup comparison yet. Thanks so much, hugely helpful for those of us new to Japanese whiskey.
Cheers! You're welcome!
Was a Guild subscriber and was pleasantly surprised to stumble upon y'all last week. Having a good time catching up!
Watching Dutch deteriorate pour by pour is outstanding 🤣🤣
It was too good! Love these drink throughs, just so I can watch the slurring get worse with the gents. Hahah.
Awesome, been waiting for this one. Picked up the Coffey grain the other week and loved it

This was such good fun guys. Oh man I want that Nikki Pure malt
Love these Drinkthroughs! Keep up the good work as always.
Glad you like them!
Great show guys, I've just got yoichi and the rest are coming ❤

Fantastic review!
They should call the casque-strength bottle “Nikkas Wit Attitude”
if you are referring to the nikka from the barrel thing is its not cask strength the name from the barrel refers to the blend being finished for a few extra months after blending in oak casks to let the blend marry
@@Frequencydead Bro, you missed the joke, but I appreciate the insight!
Like the Drinkthrough. Looking forward to the Old Forester Drinkthrough. I only have the Pure Malt and enjoyed drinking along.
Old Forester is coming soon!
What a hoot! Great review. Loved it. ❤
This is one of the most interesting review I have seen in a long time. Great work guys!
Thanks!
The Great Eight! What other distilleries offer 8 obtainable bottleings?
Ooohhhh this is a good one. A 🔥🔥🔥 lineup guys. Hands down my favorite whiskey tube 👍🏻🙌🏻
I know I’m commenting on an old video, but have you guys noticed a major shift in the blend of From the Barrel?
Replacement for Yoichi... Talisker 10 maybe?
I think it leans closer to Caol Ila 12 than Talisker 10.

Good idea! We'll work on getting a playlist together with our high scoring reviews. Planning on some live content in 2021, stay tuned!

Those are some hefty pours! What happens to the rest of the whiskey that's unfinished on camera?

Hahah. Shameful. But I thought that all of them were starting slur by the end. Lol.
ill ion in the ending shocker "I LIED" lmfaoo
Do you guys actually finish all the whiskey you pour? I just see you guys blending in the glass at the end of each episode, I’m just curious what happens to all that whiskey.
usually depends on how good the blend ends up being!
Have you tried Nikka Session or Nikka Tailored? Curious to see how they compare.

What "big Box stores" are you referring to? I live in So Cal too....

The middle dude should have had some water before drinking the Nikka From The Barrel.
Great review guys I like your style
Dillan is the master taster, because the biggest part in pure Malt is miyagikyo. I bought it a month ago in France for 33 eur. Should have bought mooooore
I have a Taketsuru Pure Malt, NAS, 43% ABV with a white label. What is different about yours with the black label?
The white label is a new version. Nikka claims it had a different blend than the black label. We're planning to try them side by side on the future.
@@CuriosityPublic Thanks gang. I will be looking forward to that review. Have a happy New Year.
REALLY??? A screw top? 🤯
You should try to blend your own Nikka 12 with Hakushu and Yamazaki than let me know the recipe
Nikka is not related to Hakushu/Yamazaki. Those fall under Suntory.
Uh boy, I have feeling the FTB is going to trump all the Nikka's that we are able to get our hands on.
Where is nikka super? Maybe you should try. 😆
That was a long one.
Can we get a comparison video of the new white label Pure Malt Nikka Taketsuru vs the original? Thanks!
Dutch did a side by side in this live stream: ua-cam.com/video/18COPFRta0U/v-deo.html

Its not creme brulee in the coffee malt, its flan.

Definitely reminded me of Johnny Walker, but I enjoyed it nonetheless! Also a bourbon guy first
Amazing!
Nikka Days is half the price of Japanese Harmony these days ($50 vs. $100).
This is really fun to watch while sipping a bottle of the taketsuru pure malt.

i had a chance of going to Japan and visiting the Nikka distillery and trying a 21years old, definitely😊 worthy
This was fun
Why does it say 1987?
miyagikyo my dram!
Where's the "Butcher of Bakersfield" gone these days?
Very interesting notes there; let's move on😅

Being a lover of Japanese whiskeys many years ago, I HATE TOKI.
Stop talking about cancel culture, and just do what you love. We are here for YOU, not the modern day thought police.

The guy on the right is so annoying and too fussy, unrealistically so. He ruins the channel IMO.
He completes the group.
That's what whisky culture is all about.🤣😂
Hard disagree, he was had great things to say. Really rounded out the group well imo. Channel liked your comments so I assume you’re trolling!
