Polo, where did you find this performance! The recording is crystal clear. Joni's voice is magical. Great reaction. She was already a good guitarist at this young age. Thanks for sharing!
@@stangovers7441 I found it year’s ago on UA-cam. If you click on me you may be able to see many videos of her that I’ve been collecting. I’ve always adored her music and think there must be at least a hundred songs, interviews, concerts etc.
try "Amelia", and "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire", and "Coyote" from the Band's "Last Waltz" video. she has so many.. I suggest these because they show her extreme breadth of talent.
My favourite Joni song! That is a rare old performance. Her voice in this is so sweet and young as a fellow Canadian I want to be a snowbird too!! I have that single. It is a treasure.
Amused by the looks on the faces of the artists she was on stage with... as she sang and after, they looked as if they thought to themselves, "I got nothing..."
OMG!! I'm 75 years old and a lifelong fan of Joni and have never seen this clip before. This is so early Joni! She's so young and you can see and hear the outstanding talent that is ready to burst forth and bloom into the wonderful singer/songwriter she became. Outstanding!!
I have adored Joni for a minimum of 40 years. When Stephen Colbert does his Colbert Questionert, when he asks “You have one song to listen to for the rest of your life-what would it be” for me it’s either _Rainy Night House_ (Miles of Aisles version) or Kathleen Battle singing the final movement of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony. Opera is where Divas are made, tolerated, and adored, and yet Kathleen Battle has taken diva-ness (diva-ship?) to such an extreme that there are numerous conductors who refuse to work with that crystyline beauty of a voice. How bad is _THAT!_
This is a very old Joni Mitchell TV appearance from an old downhome CBC TV show, 1966s She is a Canadian treasure and a genius songwriter musician and the EQUAL to Bob Dylan.
She really paints a picture. She’s an amazing story teller. A trailblazer. She pathed the way for so many singer/song writers. Her Blue album is the very first I ever owned on vinyl when I first started my collection back in the 70’s. I highly recommend checking it out. So many greats on that album. Also recommend Hits. A collection of some of the finest music your ears will ever get the privilege of hearing. River and Help Me are two of my favorite tunes on Hits. My kids are 22 & 26 and they have loved Joni since babies. One of the first songs my daughter was singing at 3 years old was Big Yellow Taxi.
A song that changed my life when I heard it around 1967...but not by Joni, whom NOBODY had heard or heard of yet. An incredible folk singer of the time was Tom Rush, who had a huge followng. He made a tape of the song, just voice and guitar that was played on "underground" radio stations. I heard it on the radio, then saw him many times in Cambridge at the Club 47. He often closed his set with this song, and it was the first song I'd ever heard (I was 16) that seemed ... beautiful. I didn't know lyrics could be meaningful AND lovely.
I was in Devens at the time. We were snowed in so we listened to the radio. We were all into folk music, and everyone was in love Judy Collins with her voice and lovely blue eyes, as celebrated in a Crosby Stills and Nash.song.
Joni Mitchell's perspective is always 'out' standing. She has always understood what 'other' means. She is as queer as a woman in a 'folk' song. She is a piercing hot coal in the Canadian winters that we all, as Canadians, pulled and juggled because it was so hot!!!....our skin would freeze the minute we walked out the door,,,,,,,,,,and we all watched and waited for influences from soulful , Black, American musical influences and anything to get out of the cold. I was born a decade after this recording. She was singing about David Geffen's homosexual explorations, 'Freeman in Paris", and that song along with 'Help Me.' contained and defined my childhood in western Canada. Keep digging. It's like she wrote her own Illiad or Bible. She is unbelievably relevant through many eras, decades..... I can't describe it better than that. .......unbelievably relevant....
I had never heard this song by Joni. A lot of the best singers/bands of her era started out with folk music, some moving more into rock. There is so much to discover from Joni. Two of my favorites are Free Man in Paris and River. I think you would enjoy both of them.
Joni is a phenomenal artist in so many areas, hope you keep discovering her magic! Some songs I would recommend are Ladies Of The Canyon, Circle Game and Chelsea Morning. Have fun!! ☮️ ❤️ 🎶 🎸 🎶
I was in AIT training at Ft Devens when this song came out. I was dissatisfied, felt trapped. The song hit me like a ton of bricks. Tom Rush was the singer. We were stuck in our barracks by heavy waist high snow. Our barracks had no insulation, and snow blew between the cracks. We each had one wool blanket , so we slept in our fatigues. On the weekends we headed to Boston to take in the folk music, or jazz. I got to see Herbie Mann. Terrific. We also hit New York and Cafe Au GoGo. The headliner was Ila Van. She was a gracious person. We exchange mail until I was sent to Africa.
I read somewhere that Joni injured her left wrist and began experimenting with unusual tunings and the capo to compensate; to make playing more comfortable, and less painful. I think it added to the originality and complexity of her compositions. Well...and that angelic voice!
Yes. She has an evolution that most reactionary don’t experience. It would be great if people could look up her discography and listen, pick two or more of each. That would be awesome❤
Yes, the beginning of that program makes everyone second-guess what is going on, but when Joni begins singing, everything completely changes. The audience, both then in 1966, and those watching now, become immediately mesmerized. Joni is my most favorite female singer/songwriter/guitarist/pianist/human being.
Polo you really found a deep cut here. Joni is one of the greatest artists of her era. The album “Blue” is a masterpiece. I enjoyed your reaction to this song.
Polo, please listen to her live performance of "Both Sides Now" with Belinda Carlisle at the Newport Folk Festival July 25, 2022. Her voice has matured and mellowed with age, giving the lyrics deeper meaning. It brought me to tears. One commenter wrote "A 23 year old wrote a song for her 78 year old self to sing." There's a video on UA-cam. Thanks! ❤
Many people don't know that Joni was a victim of Polio for almost 40 years. Led Zeppelin did a song about her, guess which one? John Lennon crashed one of her venues and asked her if she wanted to write a song that didn't make her educated thinking a barrier.Joni was an asthetic artist, so down to earth such a engaging woman. Thank you for your response.
Love your reactions Polo. Joni is the most amazing songwriter/singer/performer and visual artist. She has painted all of her album covers. She's a goddess. Just sayin'. Take care, be well. Greetings from Canada
Polo, there are so many songs and albums of Joni’s that are stunningly gorgeous. Albums: There are no filler songs. Each Is a jewel. Listen to all of “Blue” and “Court And Spark.” Songs: “Amelia” and “People’s Parties” are incredible.😘
You might really Joni's more jazz influenced stuff..."Shadows and Light"...1979 is a live concert recorded with some great musicians. Jaco PastorIus plays bass...he's just stellar! The two of them together is really powerful stuff. I've been a fan of Joni for decades. She's a real changling...switching from style to style, genre to genre effortlessly...like a ninja. Each consecutive album is different from the previous, yet still unmistakably Joni. Enjoy the journey! Thanks for covering this tune...a great reaction! I really enjoyed it, and continued success!❤
That was two years before she even recorded her first album. She's already quite striking, though i must admit i hear a huge Joan Baez influence in her singing, which she thankfully got rid of to find her own voice. The recorded version of this song is much better. You went from jazzy Joni (Edith & The Kingpin) to folky Joni. Maybe next you can try something from her later husky voiced period (Turbulent Indigo) or go back to full on jazz with her Mingus album, maybe The Drycleaner From Des Moines - with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Jaco Pastorius backing her up would be a good, sharp contrast.
This is an early gem from Joni, almost a lost track. So beautiful, one of my favorites. Tom Rush recorded before Joni ever did. Joni loved to give her (early) songs away, in a way that today's artists would almost never do.
You should definitely check out her song,'Both sides now' It's legendary for a reason. It's a song about life experience. It's lyrically a gift you'll never forget. P.S. I love the channel ! Matt, Toledo, OH
I would suggest listening to the recorded version...it has an extra verse. Also, my father was from Canada, about 1.5 hours north of Saskatoon which is where Joni is from. Last winter I think they had a week of -40. You have to plug in your car or it won't start. Experiencing that kind of cold will definitely produce an Urge for Going....
Joni Mitchell is a great talent, but with songs like Big Yellow Taxi, Help Me, and lesser known, but my favorite Joni song, River, I found this a little bit "exposé" meaning music meant only to show ones prowess in a genre. In this case it was her "ode to folk ballad" but not itself very inspiring.
She added more verses later and yes, the final one was about her man . I love joni so much, I can't ever have a favorite. I do love this song SO VERY much. Joni Is a genius. Thats all there is to it. Ask Neil Young, Jackson Brown, Crosby, Still and especially Nash and more- they bow down to Joni as the best.
This particular performance of Mitchell, I believe changed folk music from its cheesy roots. The traditional folkies on stage beside her, seemed to be stunned at her vocals, finger picking and song composition.
Longtime Joni fan here. I could overwhelm you with suggestions, but I'll try to restrain myself. Try listening to "In France They Kiss on Main Street," "Furry Sings the Blues," "Coyote," Song for Sharon," "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow," "Turbulent Indigo," "Chelsea Morning," "Big Yellow Taxi."
Her song Both Sides Now sung when she is young and then to listen to her sing it 50 years later. one can see that life has changed her. Its worth listening to both, I prefer the latest rendition
As with everything she ever produced - absolute genius. There is actually a very good Travis cover of this available on UA-cam, with a very amusing story to go with it; check it out.
Polo do you know her bio? She was really stuck in Canada. She was married. Trying to figure out how to get free. She was married and she and her husband left Canada. She ended up divorcing him pretty soon after. Also, had a baby and gave the little baby girl up for adoption.
Well, it is in part about a break up - a guy leaving her, in around the 2nd or 3rd verse - but she takes some comfort, perhaps, by relating this change to an observed order of things in Nature, in which the seasons inevitable give way to each other, and she herself gets restless and wants to leave at certain times of year. Anything from her 1970-ish(?) live performance at the BBC (where she's wearing a pale pink silk dress and playing multiple different instruments) is highly recommended!

The 60s coffee house scene gave birth to some amazing musicians from Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot.
So beautiful
My favourite Joni song! That is a rare old performance. Her voice in this is so sweet and young as a fellow Canadian I want to be a snowbird too!! I have that single. It is a treasure.
She was already "next level" even this early. Remarkable.

Very young Joni. Tom Rush was the first to record this.

Perhaps the most gifted lyricist of the 20th century. Joni Mitchell's music was pretty much my life soundtrack starting in the 1970s with "Blue".
Omg the album Hejira changed my life and changes my life with every listen

Her song 'You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio' that you mentioned at the end, is really very good and I'm surprised it hasn't been sampled.
Canadian song, to its very soul.
Yup. I could hear Gordon Lightfoot singing this.
That seems like really early Joni Mitchell. Thank you I don’t get to see that every day.❤
I can’t believe I’ve never seen this. I’ve been listening to Joni for over 50 years. Thanks for reacting to this.
Greatest singer songwriter of 20th century.
Thank you for sharing this, I hadn't ever heard it. Wonderful to see her this young, I have always loved her voice. Awesome reaction Polo

One of my favorite Joni Mitchell songs.
I've loved her since I first heard her in 1970. I was 15.
Joni is in a class all her own. Phenominal vocals and songwriting. I love this song. Her song "Really Good For Free" is another amazing song.
This is such early Joni from a TV show I watched as a child. 1966 seems so long ago.
California is a beautiful song you’d really like. Exquisite voice

Wait until December and have a listen to Joni sing River - a very sad Christmas song, it's also very beautiful
New one for me! Nice! Her guitar tunings are amazing.
Wow. She was just a baby in this. I bet it was before she even went to California.
She was still in Canada then.
She’d been to and played around the States by the year prior to this taping.
She's almost 23 years old in this video.
How are you feeling Polo? ❤ I love your videos and your realistic views. I find myself in agreement with you, often.
Listen to her album “Blue”!
Thank yoou.

Wow! A very young Joni. I have never seen this. Fantastic! Have you listen to Circle Game yet?
WOW
Tom Rush did a great cover of this song.
I think this was Canadian show in the 60s.

Fun fact: Joni Mitchell is a heavy influence of Maynard James Keenan from TOOL..
I have never not loved Joni Mitchell
Written by Tom Rush.
No Joni wrote this.
Wow she’s young here
River is special if you haven't checked it out yet.
She had a child that was given up for adoption when Joni was a teenager. I think she was heartbroken for years.
Have you checked out Ladies of the Canyon?
Try Talk To Me next.
