Dear ARTE, as a European television network, please consider adding English subtitles to your operas.

The best performance was those, when Beczala "only" acted and Jonas Kaufmann sang Rudolfo from the side....... Beczala had a bad cold and Kaufmann was in Salzburg too (in between two Ariadne performances he jumped in as Rudolfo)

The kind of opera I wil listen without watching. This modern decor is just ideous, the ”costumes” must have been bought or stolen to homeless people. I remember watching a Traviata given at la Monnaie de Bruxelles years ago which left me speechless because of this ugliness and vulgarity. Seeing la Traviata and her servant sniffing drugs at the end of the 1st act, drunk guest puking on stage. And she finally died like a homeless people in the street in the middle of garbage. La Traviata is supposed to be the epitome of kitch, grace, crinoline, crystal chandeliers. And so is La Bohême. Seriously I don’t pay to see what I see everyday in the streets. When I go or watch an opera I want to be transported, I want to dream, not facing the everyday ugliness of life. At least the singers are good and the ’’Mimi” at the end give me goosebumps every time. In the odious Traviata they were average.

While it’s the purpose of this act, I can relate that opera should be opening a different world. Not the world we already know it exists.
I’ve seen this act live in October and it was comparable to this act. The sopranos were stunning. But to be honest, I forgot a lot of details - unlike Mozart The Magic Flute for example. It’s indeed the world that turns this into magic.

You are a 100% right. This "mise en scène" is one of the worst I have seen in many productions. Shame on them. The tenor is very average, Mimi is fantastic (What a pity she is one of Adolfovich Putler's mistresses). Altogether: Turn off your TV, it's not worth to spend time with this nonsense.

The opening onto a new world is through music singing and lyrics.
The mise en scene is the lad detail of an opera. By the way since they are dressed in a contemporary fashion where are the cell phones? Michueletto has forgotten this bit?
Finally you all wish an English translation of the words? No because it'd be in contemporary English.
They speak an Italian which is terribly old style.
      O soave fanciulla
      Ohh suave maiden
During the search of the key Mimi pretends to have lost in the days suggested by the clothes the couple would end up in a violent coitus... Modernizatoon is only half way through and the whole show is topsy turvy

The only thing good is the orchestra, Netrebko is terrible!
Not a young woman in love, but an old matrona with a wobble voice.

They are too poor for cellphone. 😁
But I remember watching a modern rendition of Cosi fan tutte and the girls used cellphones to show each other the portrait of their lover. It was one of the very rare modern interpretation that I really enjoyed, it was fresh, fun and the plot is eternal so it worked and the singers were very good. If I do remember well they transported the action to Venice beach in California around the 50’ or 60’.

It's a French-German public (no adds!) broadcaster paid for by German and French taxes/fees. Why do you think they should provide English subtitles again? You are lucky that they decided against geoblocking it.

      @@patricedecourcy4505Interesting response.
You are happy to demand that a service that you are only able to enjoy because others pay for it spends money on something that is of no use to the people actually paying for it? That money then not being available for more programs diminishing the service for the people who pay.
I must admit that this would not be my reaction. I would feel that I'd come across entitled.

    • @raempftl
      @raempftl 13 днів тому

Seriously? You are receiving a service that only happens because others pay for it for FREE and think it is reasonable to make demands?
Subtitles don't write themselves. Somebody needs to be paid to write them. That would be money spent on something that is no use to paying viewers.
