Hi lovelies, if the words 'climate change' are trigger words for you, please don't watch this one! It seems like this one has ruffled a few feathers. All opinions expressed in all my videos are opinions and not facts! I always say in my yoga classes "I know nothing" because really, I don't!! There are always different views and perspectives and I am open to them all. Peace ✌

Oh, you're the last person I'd ever expect to see with a trigger warning! But, yes there are a lot of people with issues over 'The Change', and I think the message has been very damaging for some, when it shouldn't have been. Language matters. See Simon Clark's "Why is it the 'climate crisis' now?" to see how this message is put out there by activists...🤔

Unfortunately there’s a minority who mix up the science (yes climate change is a fact, as is the fact we are contributing to it, the data is overwhelming) with a political view of how we should respond to that change - and that is a personal opinion.

The future for marine transport including ships and pleasure craft is a very complex matrix.
The International Martine Organization has set a road map for decarbonization of global shipping by 2050 with a 30% cut by 2030.
New global legislation including technical standards and commercial framework to support this is due to be rolled out in 2027.
Now inland water ways emissions are not controlled by this as these are under the jurisdiction of each sovereign nation’s government.
In the UK we have, until now been very fortunate that emission reduction and compliance focus has not been on private boat owners including canal boats.
However it will come and at some point there will be a push to change from fossil fuel and perhaps even introduce smoke free zones or have stove emission criteria to meet.
In addition we don’t need to move away from combustion engines, but we need to use certified sustainable fuels such as HVO, Bio fuels from sustainable feed stocks and dual fuel engines capable of burning green hydrogen, Ammonia and methanol.
One thing for sure is that going green and reducing our co2 emission will cost money, a lot of money and that cost will be picked up by us as consumers or through our taxes as government funding.
It’s an interesting path we are on at the moment and it’s likely that the decarbonization of marine vessels will be made up of many different solutions and energy sources which will be applied to suit the use case in question.
Great to see you discussing this and the impact it might have on you as a live aboard canals boat owner!

Hey May! I love your vlogs, and want to share my optimism for the future!!! This is Tim from Iowa. I live in the middle of no where, in the middle of giant fields. We grow alcohol and bio diesel out here. A lot of it! So, not to worry so much about your diesel - we're growing our own. And here's the neat part that doesn't get much press. When we make alcohol from corn to drive our cars, the corn doesn't mysteriously disappear from the vat; it's still in there after the alcohol is drained off. But, now the corn doesn't have much starch - it's high protein cattle feed to make hamburgers and steaks with. Officially, it is called 'wet distillers grain'. After we squeeze out the oil from the soybeans to make bio diesel, similarly to the corn, the soy beans don't disappear either. What's left behind is high protein mash that we feed to chickens to make eggs to make our omelets! Neat! And we grow a new batch every year. Thousands and thousands of acres of it. We 'no till' our farms, and grow soil nourishing cover crops in between. The goal is to help the planet and let us thrive at the same time. I'm a really old guy now (your grandpa?) but I'm thrilled to be able to enjoy our world. Your vids help me keep smiling and have confidence in the future. Don't let the dregs drag you down. Keep at it!!

Modern diesel engines can only use a small portion of biofuel (methylated seed oils). Engines that run on 100% BD need either modification to prevent injector and seal damage or very old or unregulated engines.

I lived on a narrow boat back in the early seventies not as luxurious as today’s. I must say we have I think the easiest period of living up until the 90s. The wildlife, birds have been disappearing at an alarming rate. As for the weather there are really no definite seasons now in my lifetime I’ve never seen so many storms one after another. I really feel for your future as you go forward it’s so unstable at the moment. Love your videos and your determination live your life to the fullest

Over time you can incrementally upgrade your systems to be more self-sufficient. For example, change to a composting toilet, collect rainwater on your roof, change your heat source to a heat pump (which can also be an air conditioner in summer), change your gas stove to induction. The technology for all these things is available now.

  • @gonzo_the_great1675
    @gonzo_the_great1675 8 місяців тому +5

Not going to happen is correct. Given your target of being fully self sufficient. Sorry.
The power required to run a boat for motion and house draws, is just far too high for the available space for solar panels.
Fully electric narrow boats are always going to require power being brought to them. Either in chemical form, or by plugging in to charge.

  • @grahamgresty8383
    @grahamgresty8383 8 місяців тому +2

I think the future will be all electric canal boats. New sections of canals are being fitted with charge points and the Brecon and Monmothshire canal having charge points already (owned by a single hire company though!). You could make improvements to your boat by fitting an American toroidal propeller which is much more efficient (saving fuel). There is also a campaign to produce biodiesel from pond weed (see mindful narrowboat). Personally I would like to see an extension of the canal system to include waterways that hold more water in the winter and are deep enough to cope with summer droughts.

Interesting point about electric narrowboats. I’ve been watching another narrowboat UA-cam channel about a couple who have bought a new electric narrowboat. They still need a diesel generator that automatically kicks in to charge the batteries if the solar isn’t sufficient to power the boat. At one point they said they have been using more diesel than they did in their previous conventional boat. The technology will no doubt improve over time. We live in interesting times.

There is room for all the different types of energy/fuels to exist alongside each other, a blended use of fuels is the way forward, you may also see synthetic fuels becoming more and more available. It does not have to be a all or nothing approach, its how we use energy is the important factor.

Putting my engineer head on, industrialised manufacture is usually far more polluting than the use of the products being manufactured.
Most boat engines in reality see very little use. I'm guessing your typical cruise is twoish hours every two weeks or so. If you upgraded your power source it may take 25-30 years to offset the emissions savings.
A working boat doing 8 hours a day would do this much quicker but brings us to our next limitation in the current technology.
The main drawback for electric is the size, weight and charging time of batteries and that slight inconvenience the lithium iron batteries have of catching fire.
Personally I think electric is still a work in progress before it's properly viable at the moment. I have no doubt it will get there at some point.
Electric drivetrains across all vehicle types do offer a lot of options to simplify and improve systems.
Typically engines are optimised to do there best at a certain rpm range which often dictates the need for a gearbox and mechanical drivetrain.
Gearboxes also consume around 5% 10% of the engine power and so being able to cut that out of the system by using an electric motor does offer a lot of advantages.
I'm currently driving around 20k miles a year in a 20 year old Audi a4, I have a friend with a hybrid doing the same kind of milage in the same conditions and my fuel encomy is 30% better.
As with all tech there a lot of misleading and overstated claims.

    • @gingertom2355
      @gingertom2355 8 місяців тому +2

I totally agree with this. I understand individual's need to feel like they're making a contribution but in cold reality small tokens make little difference. I suspect May, like most of us contributes more emissions over time just using her car for her practical needs.
We can all do something but we'd be better served focusing on what can be practically done on our individual 'big' items.
As for battery storage -completely agree. There's one thing having lots of electrical storage. Another thing being able to exploit it with appropriate on board charging capacity all year round for a ,. AND cart it around SAFELY while living on top of it.
May and George are at least giving the issue their time to think what they could do to adapt. Practicality with a conscience is a great start might I suggest.

  • @nealeburgess6756

Hi May, as others have said, a traditional diesel engine will happily run on vegetable oil (including used cooking oil). The only modification you may need (only when the weather is cold) would be a heater on the diesel filter. Also, be realistic as to how much diesel you actually need to use. I would guess you use a fraction of the amount most people use. You use wood for heating that where possible you scavenge from dead trees. I reckon you are pretty green already.

Damming and draining the Mediterranean Sea may be the answer yet to the world’s land shortage woes - humans love to breed, live as long as possible and unless you’re a zoo keeper or surfer, Apex predation against humans is against the law. Climate change is the perfect antidote to the world’s population crisis which paradoxically will eventually lead to a human mass extinction event as we run out of food and water. Hence the space race to colonise the moon and mars. No other species beats itself up like the human species. It’s a guilt thing. Have a good day!

Your channel, your experiences and your voice 💜 The number of named storms has increased a lot over the past year, which although doesn’t give the full picture it certainly is an indicator of things not being great. Also the info below if from a huge study, the wildlife around us also provides a picture.
World-leading study, State of Nature, finds no let-up in the decline of our wildlife, with one in six species at risk of being lost from Great Britain.
    • State of Nature, the most comprehensive report on UK wildlife, also shows that the species studied have, on average, declined by 19% in the UK since monitoring began in 1970.
    • Most of the important habitats for the UK’s nature are in poor condition, but restoration projects can and do have clear benefits for nature and people, as well as climate change mitigation and adaptation.
We need to understand what isn’t working in order to do something about it, that isn’t being doom and gloom, it’s being proactive. There is no perfect person when it comes to the answer, but if we all tried to be reflective like May and make the changes that are achievable for ourselves then things can change.

How many batteries will you need to successfully run your boat on total electric? Including heating as log burners are also part of the current climate change talk regarding the particles emitted. Will the storage space and weight be totally too much to legitimately consider it, ie, the more weight you add, the more power you use so the more batteries you add adding more weight the more power you need etc?

May, I want to offer you a different angle of view to your share of the climate change. Yes, you boat uses e few liters of diesel per week. But your massage to all of us is to spare as many resources as possible and despite that live a fulfilled and happy life. If only a few people every day watch your content and start taking their lives into their own hands instead of blaming the government for everything (I am from Germany, how is it in UK?) your tiny little carbon footprint would be well spent. The world is changing and somebody has to show us how to live self-fulfilled without buying tons of stuff every year, driving bigger and bigger cars or jetting around the world on the search of exotic destinations. I don’t think in the grand scheme of the planet that diesel run boats make any impact. Live aboards are a tiny tiny demographic and we are over all much lower impact than more conventional land dwellers just by the nature of having to be conscious about our use of resources day to day. Like Konstantin Kisin famously said, the future of the planet will be decided by poor people in third world countries. Batteries are very high impact so electric everything isn’t the answer, it’s just a different problem.

UK ~1% global CO2, ~25% of that on transport, of that ~75% from ~33 million cars. There are ~34,000 narrow boats, so the contribution a narrow boat makes having to move every two weeks is probably so small it's like a fart in a hurricane. Being mostly rural even the range/stove's wood-burning PM2.5 isn't an issue. I doubt you'd need to dump diesel anytime soon, but May-be HVO one day... You said it yourself May, "Don't let fear control you"
And referring to your pinned comment, the opinions of "Experts" are often contradictory too, although sometimes you'd be pushed to believe that the way certain subjects are reported.
Some of us older listeners will remember the Club of Rome report entitled "Limits to Growth" published in 1972. I don't recall all the predictions in this, but IIRC one of them was that oil would have run out by the 1990's unless there was a drastic reduction of consumption.
It's pointless to consider converting a boat's engine to electric and expecting to run it off solar or wind charging. If that were possible owners of EVs would be charging their batteries from solar panels and wind turbines rather than plugging into the mains ( or a fossil fuel powered generator). How many mains chargers exist on the waterways system? How many are planned to be installed? Will they be maintained in working order (this seems to be an issue with public EV chargers)? What will their user cost be? And if the waterway floods, how will that affect them and what they're connected to?
Did I hear George say vans have a ten year lifespan when he was driving a 25 year old Hilux in the last video?
I've heard varying doom and gloom predictions all my life. None have come true. The climate is definitely changing, but it always has. We know that in Britain there have been extreme weather events long before the industrial revolution and when the world's population was a fraction of what it is now. We live in a place where weather is changeable and fairly unpredictable. I can remember travelling down the M5 as a boy in the 1960's and seeing floodwater seemingly for miles .It seems to me that mankind can have very little influence on what the weather does and the best we can do is prepare for what may happen and adapt to what does.
That seems to be the conclusion that you've come to. I agree with you.

The notion that shifting from petrol-run motorised machines to electric machines can reduce environmental pollution is deliberately misleading or superficially understood. Let's me show you the actual far much broader picture of it to help you understand what the ongoing global campaigns of electric machines are leading the human population on this planet to.
Firstly, you guys should have noticed that not only petrol -run, motorised machines, such as your boat, your boyfriend's van, release pollutants to our living environment, but all human-invented machines which consume electricity, including your computer, mobile phones, light bulbs, public transportation like airplanes, trains, busses are also poluters simply because they all consume
either fossil fuels or electricity, and in order to produce electricity, either fossil fuels have to be burnt at conventional power plants, or nuclear power plants have to be built to produce electricity for such human -inventef machines to be able to work to serve human subjective understanding of the physical world surrounding human society, and human purposes of inventing such machines. Burning fossil fuels for electricity obviously pollutes and gradually destroys our living environment, and building more nuclear power plants is the same as accumulating more and more unmanageable nuclear waste released from nuclear power plants, due to the extreme long half life of nuclear waste , which ranges from tens of thousands to hundreds millions of years or even billions of years
Ex, isotopes such as technetium -99 has a half-life of 211, 100 years, iodine-129 has a half-life of 15.7 million years; Pu-239 decays to U-235 , which is suitable for
nuclear weapons, has a half-life of 10^9 or 1 billion years . Plutonium -239 or Pu-239 has a less extreme-half-life , but it is still extremely long, about 24, 100 years. It decays via alpha decay to form uranium-235 (U-235)
    239. 235
    Pu. -----> U + alpha + beta
Secondly, let's see what will happen when shifting from pertro- or diesel - run machines to electricity -run machines. There will be obviously an increase in human consumption of electricity when more and more machines are run by electricity, and higher demand for electricity will lead to having to produce more and more electricity at power plants, and thus moe and more fossil fuels will have to be be burnt there, and more and more nuclear power plants will be built to meet the increasing consumption of electricity. As a result, there is not any actual reduction of any sort of human -caused pollution. Oppositely, it can cause more challenging problems of pollution resulted from human ignorance of the consequences of their subjective understanding of the real physical world governed by the laws of nature, or the structure and mechanism of the universe which have created all forms of matter in the universe, including this planet, and all the beings on it, but not by any sort of human-invented notions and their drived inventions
After all, all what the notion of electric machines can actually do is to move
human polluting activities from personal machines to collectively polluting activities at power plants, which is the same as merely shiting pollution from tailpipes of petrol or diesel -run machines to smokestacks of power plants, or
merely disguising or hiding human polluting activities to serve immediate profits of commercial corporationns which have been deceivingly advertising electric machines as "GREEN TECHNOLOGY", and immediate economic values which ignorant politicians want to achieve, failing to understand the inevitable consequences, and we are all heading toward an inevitable human collective self -destructuon, continuing destroying our own living environment to serve human extremely limited knowledge's subjective understanding of the structure and mechanism of the universe, its invented notions and its inventions of such machines, materialism and too much consumption of it which is so well expressed in the desires for immediate economic values set by ignorant individuals in power
Thirdly, let's have a view of the current complications resulted from the notion of electric machines in more details.
Electric machines, especially motorized vehicles, involve a substantial environmental footprint throughout their life-cycle which includes the following:
    1. Resource extraction: Mining for lithium, cobalt, nickel, and other materials used in batteries has significant environmental and social vimpacts
    2. Manufacturing Emissions: The production process for batteries and electric vehicles is energy-intensive or consumes energy excessively, mand currently generated more emissions than conventional motorised vehicle production
    3. End -of-Life Disposal: Battery recycling and disposal are complex, have not yet been fully efficient, mleadingbto potential environmental hazards
    4. Plutonium and Uranium contained in nuclear waste from nuclear power plants can be used to create nuclear weapons. Plutonium, in particular, is a byproduct of spent nuclear fuel. It can be separated and repurposed for weapons of mass destruction, Even if the nuclear waste were made to be not suitable for creating traditional nuclear weapons. It could still be used to construct "dirty bombs" to disperse radioactive material , causing widespread contamination over very large regions
It will be extremely dangerous if terrorist organisations and crime syndicates gain access to numerous nuclear waste sites around the globe
    5. Geopolitical Risks: The proliferation of nuclear materials increases geopolitical instability. Countries with nuclear capabilities will find it challenging to control and safeguard all nuclear waste, especially in regions with weak governance or ongoing conflicts.
    6. Unpredictable natural disasters like earthquakes can destroy nuclear waste storage sites , and release it into the living environment uncontrollably
    7. Economic and Social impacts:
    a. Excessive consumption of electricity can lead to higher energy costs for the working class and businesses
b.Over-dependence on energy sources needed to generate electricity, such as gas , coal, oil imported from other countries can obviously cause vulnerabilities in energy security, making national economies more susceptible to price fluctuations and foreign supply disruption, as it has been witnessed in many countries , including the UK during the geopolitical war in Ukraine
    c. Excessive demand for electricity can strain existing energy infrastructure, leading to inefficiency and increased maintenance costs
Therefore, the notion of electric machines actually is nothing else other than
transferring personal polluting behavior or activities to collective polluting activities at power plants, and thus it is obviously not any sort of solution to the outstanding problem of human self-destruction of their own living environment That shift does not eliminate any pollution, but redistributes it
You guys should be aware of such deceptive tactics as that "Greenwashing" method by commercial corporationns which have obviously succeeded in misleading consumers and ignorant politicians into believing that they are making environmentally friendly choices by shifting to electric machines, while introducing even worse and more challenging problems
Politicians often reduce complex problems to simple sound bites for public consumption, leading to oversimplification of the nuanced challenges.
They may promise quick fixes or downplay the inevitable risks of nuclear waste to gain electoral support, ignoring the long-term implications and involved scientific complexities to serve their own personal interests, or their political party's fanatical and factional agendas
What can be immediately done about the problem of environmental self-destruction is to reduce the production of personal motorised vehicles and such polluters, while upgrading public transportation infrastructure, and reducing the costs of taking public transportation for the consumers to make it more convenient and economical for people to take public transportation than driving personal motorised vehicles, which will encourage people to take more and more public transportation than using their personal vehicles, and lowering taxes for businesses which can come up with new inventions favourable for increasing production of such motorised vehicles which can used solar power for their mechanical operations without any pollution, or with the least pollution
Since all human population on this planet have experienced the consequences of human polluting activities for economic values, which are so clearly expressed in unpredictable and extreme weather conditions, taking care of such environmental problems is also the responsibility of every human on this planet, but not merely environmental activists'.

interesting thoughts about going electric, but indulge me? where would you get the electric from? i know your going to say solar! but not so good on cloudy days or for the tree lined canals, wind? that will be difficult low bridges and tunnels and tree lines sides to canals. Charging points! only at certain places, no good if like now you are stuck in one place, you are going to run out of power.
you came up with a brilliant idea about getting an anchor! all boats should have one! i would suggest getting a proper anchor, but also a weighted bag one. now if you do get a 'proper' anchor get a length of chain to go with it! most people make the mistake of just tying a rope to the anchor, it won't work! you need a length of chain then your rope. that can be used in fast flowing water, where as the bag type in still water. having a anchor can help you out in so many ways right down to mooring to turning in tight spaces. so i would highly recommend when or if you can to invest in a anchor.

Fire taters are the best, I want some now. Climate change is the biggest issue man will likely ever encounter, so it's nice to see you pondering the problem. Hydrogen power will likely be the thing that replaces oil in the end. There are fully electric narrowboats out there, it's not cheap to do though, but you might be able to DIY your way through it. Something thats worse for the environment than your engine though is burning wood, there are way more ecotoxicities released from wood that end up in getting into the lungs, bloodstream and brain. In Canada there was a study that found that 80,000 metric tonnes of fine particle pollution was produced from wood burners which is way more than their entire transport network which produced 31,000 tonnes. It's much the same in the UK unfortunately. So if you want to go green, getting an electric boiler and oven would be the best start.
