  • Everyone always believes I'm stuck in the past when it comes to video games, but in actual fact, I always have an interest in the modern era of gaming.
    To prove it, I thought I'd make this video, the first in a possible series, where I discuss my thoughts about the most recent (at the time of writing) Nintendo Direct. (September 14th, 2023)
    For any games I don't talk about, I either didn't have much of a opinion on, didn't know what to say about them, or possibly forgot about them.
    Games featured:
    - Mario Vs. Donkey Kong
    - Prince of Persia The Lost Crown
    - Super Mario RPG Remake
    - Princess Peach: Showtime!
    - Another Code: Recollection
    - SaGa Emerald Beyond
    - Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft
    - Detective Pikachu Returns
    - Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes
    - Luigi's Mansion 2 HD
    - F-Zero 99
    - WarioWare: Move It!
    - Wargroove 2
    - Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

    The fact that there was an overabundance of first party remakes could hint at the end of the Switch era, doing projects that are relatively low-risk and relatively low-effort to bridge the waters before they announce their next console. After all, the Switch's been around since early 2017, it's rare for a console generation to go on for 8+ years.

      I think you're right, the switch is on its way out, but before Nintendo announces a successor and everyone moves on, they're trying to keep the spotlight on the original for now.
      Some great games like Metroid Samus Returns and Fire Emblem Echoes didn't do so well because of bad timing.

  • @MasterKnightDH
    @MasterKnightDH 8 місяців тому +16

    Since I'm obviously here because of SMRPG, I am going to say that I can definitely expect that rebalancing to improve the difficulty would in fact happen. It would have to because of the original already being easy enough without the buffs to the player's capability in the remaster, some of which (like Diamond Saw now being blockable) aren't necessarily going to be noticed by most players. There are some concerns, but I will say at least that an image showed a 142 damage point difference in enemies with a 35 Magic DEF point difference, happening off of Snowy which had a max timing multiplier of only 1.5x, so there's good sign that attack spell timing modifiers are buffed. Hopefully, the general enemy quality is improved to compensate, but there's no reason it shouldn't be because we're also getting an "Enjoy Mode" when there have been calls for a Hard Mode to begin with.
    For reference, there's also a ROM hack called Super Mario RPG Revolution that changes up things, with aim to make the game significantly less "attack-heal-attack-heal" shenanigans to say the least, even if it's, at least currently, proof of how important execution is when relying on counterattack scripts rather than working better the Physical DEF stat for checking that mess. Its maker, WaddlerD, is also planning a final version release with updated balance, aiming for the end of the month to celebrate the upcoming remaster. I thought I'd go ahead and bring this up.

    God, i really hope that the TTYD remake ushers in a new Paper Mario renaissance. But at the same time i'm also worried, that a new Paper Mario game would still be as creatively restricted as most other Mario spin-offs these days.
    After all, much like with the TTYD remake the M&L remakes were allowed to keep most of their original elements. And yet the next Mario "RPG" after those two was very creatively restricted again.

    There is absolutely no way they're going to leave Twilight Trail as it is, it's apparent to literally everyone that it is boring and redundant, and I'm 100% sure they're going to add a warp pipe from the village to the mansion. They're also going to polish up the last parts of the game before the final boss (what was that massive area before it?) that originally was clearly rushed to completion. I just think that 60 fps should've been the target, and I'm not sure I dig the new artstyle so much, but I'm so happy that so many people will play this now..

    • @qu1253

    • @vividBloodsucker
      @vividBloodsucker 8 місяців тому +2

      @@qu1253 While frustrating, I at least understand the victory lap around the world before Chapter 7, it gives the player a chance not only to look back at how far they've come, but also gives them one more chance to do any unfinished business in those areas before they enter the endgame. The order you visit the areas could be better optimized though so there's less back-and-forth through the Sewers due to needing to go to the Glitz Pit and Twilight Town at inconveninent times...
      Twilight Trail on the other hand is a tricky one since the first and second trips should be retained. The first for obvious reasons, and the second because it gives that tense survival-feeling having to work your way back alone. Maybe some sort of shortcut-path should be added that requires Vivian to pass through, just nearby to town that leads to the Steeple Entrance. Keelhaul Key needs a rework too while we're at it, the back-and-forth nonsense for Flavio is headache-inducing especially when unlike Twilight Trail it's not just a path to walk down.

    • @averysmalman8191
      @averysmalman8191 8 місяців тому +1

      @@vividBloodsucker I'd argue for Boggly Woods as well; you have to make multiple trips to and from Flurry's house and there's a few times in the tree too. It's not nearly as bad as Twilight Trail and Keelhaul Key but still

    I'm in the same camp when it comes to the TTYD Remake (More excited of what it entels to Nintendo and Paper mario) and Mario RPG (Game may become too easy with the new features, but Post Game may keep the difficulty), but I think the new mechanics is less troubling than you think in Mario RPG.
    To start off, It's only when you Perfectly time an action command when attacking, meanwhile Perfectly timing defending grants 0 damage. This means that if one masters the timing, the game becomes more rhymthic, which I see no issue with. You can also just skip encounters until you need the stats from level ups, which still makes the game easy but not mind numbing. The Triple special may drastically make the game easier, especially since the barr seems to carry from battles, but It's mostly going to be used on bosses and not some overworld chump. Triple special also helps the team building issue where every team ends us having Peach due to her healing abilities. There might also be new accesories and Armor to make the post game bosses more interesting.
    As for TTYD, Nothing new has been showned off, but it may be in the future. A PvP mechanic where you fight different badge builds would be amazing if it exist. It would make badge grinding actually worth it and hopefully they buff the weak badges in TTYD (Tornado Jump should do more damage and HP Drain should heal more)

    Personally, I believe that RPG games with quick-time actions that could make enemy encounters more or less difficult, whether it's Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door, the Mario and Luigi RPG games, Mother 3, or Bug Fables, ought to have multiple difficulty options that are each balanced towards how often the player would be expected to make use of these quick-time actions, with Easy being balanced around not using them at all, Normal being balanced around being able to land them consistently most, but not necessarily all, of the time, and Hard being balanced around being able to not only land them consistently, but also smart ability usage, and even frequent item usage.

    On the topic of improving TTYD's design: I just hope they rework the Troubles. Suddenly adding additional objectives and only having one active at a time is pretty awful sidequest design, and half of them at best have worthwhile rewards.
    That said, TTYD remake is the main thing I got from the Direct, next to Princess Peach. Everything else either didn't strike me or I already knew about it. F-Zero 99 was a surprise though, but I'm not sure how well a racing game would translate into a battle royale format

    and Personally I'd have preferred to see PM 64 get remade over TTYD as honestly I always felt the dialogue and pacing in TTYD to be pretty awful, almost sardonic. The gameplay and battle system are excellent no doubt, but that's really the only part I genuinely like. I do wonder how they're going to change/improve on it beyond the graphics (and how they'll handle Vivian given the times we live in), but I'll just hold on and see.

    I am personally looking forward to the Mario RPG games. Sure, I will replay the original Paper Mario 2 game, but I want to buy the remaster version of the game to show my support for it and play it of course. Hope enough players buy the game to show Nintendo how much we love these games and want to see a true sequel to the series with some new features.
    Also, the peach game looks really interesting and seems to have a lot of variety to it.
    As for the rest, I rather pass. Besides, I do look forward to games on other systems like for the Steam Deck, where you can play lots of 3rd party games.
    Personally, I am extremely disappointed we got zero news about the Baten Kaito games. Wonder if they either gave up on it or they decided to give it more time and put more effort into the games, which I think they could use a ton of updates since they are kind of rough. Also, nothing on possible remasters or anything on Zelda games like Twilight Princess and/or wind Waker. Maybe they might update them, but I think they are good as they are, maybe a little polish would not hurt.
    Although personally I would love to see a Zelda Ocarina of Time remake, maybe with a family friendly dating sim mixed in to date one of the girls like Zelda, Saria, Malon, Ruto, etc. Not only that, but it would also change the plot and ending depending on who you choose, and maybe the girl could be useful in gameplay and be able to unlock different secrets/items in each playthrough to increase playability.

    • @MarioDS01
      @MarioDS01 7 місяців тому

      Update: The Baten Kaitos games are now available one the Switch. Sadly, it is pretty much the same quality as the original and you are stuck with the Japanese voices and no option to change to English. I know the original English voices were not great, but could it killed them to make new better-quality ones? I guess they did not have the budget to change anything. So, kind of iffy on this game, but still less expensive option for those who never played the games.

  • @VonFirflirch

    I imagine the writing in the TTYD remake might see alterations here and there, IIRC, the english version was the only one to be censored in a few areas (Vivian, alcohol and probably something else I'm blanking on). Intelligent Systems remaking TTYD is like if Chunsoft started with pokemon mystery dungeon remakes starting at Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky; they're the ones that people want. like the idea of PMD DX is OK on paper, but you can't really help but feel that they were probably held back by corporate demands such as only including the base Pokedex of that game as much as possible (barring later generation evolutions, baby prevolutions and Lucario) and Megas, which made it look insanely bland in comparison to something more daring as New Pokemon Snap. Overall, seems like Nintendo is letting IS cook with a true-gameplay warioware sequel and TTYD, also possibly a rumored remake of Geneaology of the Holy War.
    Not disparaging Get It Together as a bad Warioware game, the mouse cursor characters probably changes up things a lot. but i kind of wonder if they had to ride it out safe as Switch Lites sold steadily and was required to maintain parity compatibility. then threw that aside when they were allowed to use IR in games again. like seriously, the last Switch Lite variant was something like a Dialga/Palkia BDSP one. yet we have Scarlet/Violet, TOTK and Mario Wonder (or just plain Mario) Red Switch OLEDs.

    Every time I see these hype trailers, I'm always reminded of Ben Croshaw saying they went from "This looks interesting" too "It's not immediately obvious how they're going to fuck this up" and that rung true with the Mario RPG remake for me comparing the first trailer to this one. I would prefer remakes either leave the game the same and update the graphics and minor interface things (while also adding a little polish, see Gimmick Land > Tomato Adventure, great game if you're starving for a good Mario RPG) and maybe also iron out the Game Breakers. At least don't add more of them.
    In the original Super Mario RPG, you could stat-grind your Jump attack (which you start with and it only costs 3 "Flowers", the lowest Flower cost of any move in the game). After a few hours, you could do HUNDREDS of damage while still having Mario a very low level, and that's before we get into Geno Boosts and Red Essences. I think a remake should possibly iron things like those out, making them at least not nearly as exploitable, not make attacks more overpowered than ever. Not only are the Triple Attacks very powerful, but they remove strategy in attacking all enemies, when in the original game, there was at least a distinction between less effective moves and costlier ones that attacked multiple targets.
    With that in mind, I'm only waiting to see what kind of nonsense they ruin the TTYD Remake with, again with TTYD already being quite an easy and exploitable game, even by Mario RPG standards. At this point, I don't even want more remakes of my favorite games. We've all heard of leveling up BP to make a Danger Mario or stacking Super Appeal Ps for unlimited Star Power, as well as generally being invincible with a full inventory of varying amounts of Boo Sheets and Jelly Ultras.

      About the Jump Special in SMRPG, Jump wasn't the least expensive attack special. Thunderbolt costed only 2 FP. However, Jump still stood out because it excessively involved scaling. Super Mario RPG Revolution consequently reduced the maximum bonus to its Magic Power from 125 to 75, which would be further incentivized by Crusher and Sleepy Time (the latter of which had damage dealing capability added there) also getting the Jump Power benefit.
      As for the Triple Attacks, we don't know how exactly they work, but I have deciphered the names of the ones shown on the JP site ("Invincible Shell Spike" for Bowser/Princess, "Star Riders" for Mallow/Geno, and "Protective Veil" for Princess/Geno), and that last one indicates that Princess/Geno, by far the most overused team in the original because of Group Hug stacking so easily with timed Geno Boosting, is going to have an opportunity cost. Now of course, yes, the SMRPG characters are going to have more to work with. Want to know who else had more to work with in a remake of one of their games? Pac-Man, in Pac-Man World Re-Pac, where Mega-Pac isn't a mere "get to kill this specific enemy type" gimmick, Hang In Mid-Air which is totally not Yoshi's Flutter Jump exists, and Rev Rolling doesn't make him bounce ridiculously far off of hit objects. He's up against Anubis Rex Re-Pac having mook support and improved focus on hitting Pac , as well as Krome Keeper Re-Pac being more competent in general. For all we know, the enemy quality may be improved. I'd be far from surprised precisely because EVERYBODY on OUR side of the Pacific is already bringing up about SMRPG being easy enough.

    I feel you on being burnt out by remakes and remasters. I want new experiences, dangit. I'm playing Metroid Prime Remastered right now and while the visual upgrade is phenomenal, it just makes me wish we'd finally get a new Metroid game.

    Honestly I've played ttyd quite a few times, I'm likely to skip it. But even though I might not play it, as long as the dialogue wasn't significantly altered, I'm definitely going to implore anyone who has any interest in the game to immediately buy it and beat it. It's a must play title, and Nintendo needs to understand that this is what we really want! Great storytelling and gameplay rolled into a beautiful and long game.
