My guess is that it all used to be a single race that colonized several planets, and as a result, they began to evolve into separate species that are still similar but have slightly different dietary preferences. It would explain why Koppaites are relatively similar to Hocotatians despite being from a different planet.

There's a couple of other changes here too:
The Japanese version includes an option to enable or disable katakana and hiragana above some kanji text (thus making it easier for Japanese children to read properly).
Also on the map screen, it normally shows the location name and the caves in that area, for Above Ground though, since the text is short in Japanese they also included bubbles to fill the gap.
The file select also has the buttons in bubbles too in the Japanese version, but not in other versions.
In fact, US and Japanese GameCube versions also have an option to choose Progressive Scan mode (if the game detects the expensive component cables or if played on a Wii via HDMI with a converter), but European GameCube versions don't have this and instead have an option to choose between 50HZ and 60HZ.
These latter changes are mostly common though, along with the Nintendo logo color.

Great video! But I'd just like to point out that アメボウズ ( amebouzu, the water wraith) technically does mean candy-bald, but it's most commonly seen as a combination of the Japanese words for amoeba ( アメーバ) and the Japanese yokai umibozu. (海坊主, literally sea-preist). As another commenter pointed out, ame can also mean rain (雨) instead of candy (飴). And bouzu (坊主) can mean baldness/crew cut, but usually refers to a buddhist priest. It is also sometimes used in fishing to refer to not catching anything.

About the Wollywog, it's name is also one letter away from being the exact same as an extremely popular character in the UK and Australia that many consider very racist, the Gollywog. It's based off of a blackface design and even to this day it's still popular and you can still find him. He was never copyrighted properly so throughout history people kept taking the character and using him for their own toys and merch. It is still heavily debated if the character is a racist symbol or not.

@@nathanblackburn1193 Yeah I can see it. I mean the character was literally inspired by blackface performers and looks exactly like one but apparently they're considered completely different things? The term "Plush Minstrel" is more appropriate lol.
Although most Golliwog characters don't even behave in a stereotypically offensive way and usually aren't malicious, they act more like black clowns or something. Plus they were super popular, even being a mascot for a jam company. So people are probably mostly nostalgic about them. Idk, I'm neutral.

Tbh, I prefer the Hocotate Ship to be called just that over Dolphin 1 or the like, because it’s ironically less confusing, and it’s easier to tell the ships apart that way
And it’s kinda misleading that the Hocotate Ship is called “Dolphin 1”, because well, we were first introduced the SS Dolphin in Pikmin 1, while the Hocotate Ship comes from Pikmin 2, and it’s seemingly more technologically advance with how it’s practically sentient and can send its head for underground exploration, and that one's more notoriously owned by Hocotate Freights because of how the President is much more fond of it and how much it promotes the company itself, it literally screams Hocotate Freight and often kisses the President's feet, while "S. S. Dolphin" also sounds like a nickname Olimar gave to his beloved ship from the first game, that he also desperately wants back after the president sold it to pay some of the company's debt, he made that ship his own, and even some parts are only important to collect because they have sentimental value to Olimar, as they were presents from his children
Sooo it’s not surprising localization teams thought Dolphin 1 was the SS Dolphin instead of the other one xd
It’s kind of like what happens in Street Fighter with Vega, M. Bison, and Balrog, the international order just make much more sense for the characters than the original one

  • @DKQuagmire

I owned the Pal versions of the games, and I always wondered how the developers got away with calling the frog and tadpole creatures, Wollywogs and Wogpoles. As even I was aware of the racial slur in England, as the company "Robbinsons", who made breakfast/ sandwich jams used the Gollywog black face character as their mascot, all the way up until the year 2000, before they changed their mascot to "Paddingon Bear". When i was searching for a playlist of Pikmin 1 Ost, i've found a Pikmin Ost called "Song of love"
There's two version of that song, either Japanese or french... I get it for the japanese song but is there a explanation for the french version of that song ?
maybe there's something that i'm missing, or maybe there was a collaboration beetween Japan and France for Pikmin 1 ?

When I was young and looking up walkthroughs for this game, I followed a guy playing the US localisation, and would freak out when I saw that there was a different name/look for some of the treasures, the first one I noticed was the Pschitt bottlecap in place of the Carmex tub, I panicked and thought I couldn't complete the game because it wasn't the exact same💀💀💀
I learned a lot with this video, thanks for making and sharing🖤🖤

Fun fact: my first time playing pikmin 2 was with the Japanese GameCube version because it was actually cheaper to get a Japanese copy of the game, an action replay for GameCube, and a new memory card rather than I get a single American copy and I still had a blast playing the game in a language I couldn’t understand (although technically it’s cheating because I grew up watching chuggaconroys play through ever since I was like 6)

I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned it yet, but at 29:32, the translation isn’t particularly wrong, but probably not the most common way of reading it. アメ(ame) means both candy 「飴」 and rain 「雨」. In this case, it’s probably rain. For ボウズ (bouzu), that’s a little more complicated. It means bald or shaved head 「坊主」 and also sometimes Buddhist monk 「坊主」which use the same kanji. This is probably where the ‘wraith’ comes from in English. Both include the kanji 主, which is maybe where wraith comes from? Either way, the main point is that アメ probably refers to rain.

The Permanent Container is a tin of grilled fish. source: i'm a weeb and can read hiragana. idk what the kanji says but it's likely related to the specific kind of fish or preparation.
Under ICC (it's actually the brand, still couldn't find anything on it though) it says 'sanma', which is pike/mackeral/saury apparently. i don't know any more than that but i am shocked that there is NOTHING on this treasure. almost makes me wanna go painstakingly translate all the treasures with japanese text on them... haha, almost.
also, waterwraith's JP name is "amebouzu" - this is a reference to the umibozu, a sea yokai that appears as a giant humanoid that tries to capture or kill the captains of ships as they're on voyages. in this context, 'ame' is definitely meant to be 'rain'. it can mean candy, but the kanji is different - since it was in katakana, though, there's no way to tell the difference, so the translator just picked one and spat that out lol.

I feel like Amebōzu is supposed to be based off of the Umibōzu, a Japanese yokai said to appear to sailors before calm seas turn harsh. So in this case, Ame is prooobably supposed to mean rain (雨) and not candy (飴), both being pronounced as Ame.

Well, the translation is very much correct here.
"Troublant" means "disturbing", but also "To perplex".
Also, that's a play on words with the idiom: "Naviguer en eaux troubles" (having no idea where you are going).
Basically, the translator saw that the skybox was foggy, decided that it was "Trouble" (which means foggy or cloudy here) and thought:
"Yeah, I'm going to call it La Source Troublante."

When suggesting that hocotatians haven't found any other intelligent life despite the existance of koppaites and space pirates, my theory is that hocotatians and koppaites are from the same species, and are named differently depending on their planet of origin (just like real life nations, I am mexican and you are american despite both being human). Maybe this species inhabits multiple planets, thus creating the need for a space shipping company. At least that's my head canon

Well, uh, its like if you had a pint of whole milk, and two chocolate pudding cups, and you mix them together, then somehow get it shelf stable and let it reach room temperature. Pretty much that. It's okay, I prefer just making some Nesquik choccy milk myself. Yoo-Hoo slurps better though.
