- A young American man, Richard (Leonardo DiCaprio), travels to Thailand. During a stay on Khaosan Road in Bangkok, he meets a mysterious man named Daffy (Robert Carlyle), who tells him about a secret beach paradise. Richard then heads for southern Thailand in search of the island. Along the way, he is befriended by a young French couple, Françoise (Virginie Ledoyen) and Étienne (Guillaume Canet), and he shares the secret of the island with them.
The three then strike out across the water with inflatable bags and whatever they can carry. They reach the island, where they find a huge marijuana plantation. Heading further inland, they eventually find the hidden beach, where a small, suspicious clan of Western travellers has settled, and is led by a strong-willed woman, Sal (Tilda Swinton).
The three newcomers then struggle to find their place in the Utopian community.
every time I hear this song it reminds me of my life journey that I made in my 20s. My name is Richard, but my travels was much like the movie. I meet a lot of awesome people and some I didn't care to meet. Now I have a career and on the way to buy a house, and I wouldn't have traded any of my life choices for anything. Life is about family, friends, moments, and the memories that you take with you. No one can take that or change it. Don't ever regret what you have done in your past, just think about what choices you need to make for the future, when that time comes.

good film with a good soundtrack
This film has such an epic soundtrack.
While smoking up and listening to this song, I imagined floating on a boat, in an endless sea, no waves, no tide. Just me and my guitar, playing for eternity under a black canvas, on which I would write the stars with my music.
The moral to the movie is you can't find paradise here on Earth, as in it's not a place you go to, it can be experienced anywhere and you have to savor those moments. Love this movie and this song. Remember when it came out like it was yesterday.

This is one of the best scenes in a movie ever. It just gives such an incredible feeling, simply knowing there are places on earth like "The Beach." That movie messes with my emoitions.
I am lucky to have been living here in Krabi, Thailand for the last 8 years, where much of 'The Beach' was filmed. I can assure you, once you leave the mainland and get out to the islands, it IS paradise!
If you love this movie you've gotta read the book, well worth it.

i can remmember listening to this song on a flight back from turkey . i as i looked out the window i can remmember thinking how beautiful this planet is and how small we are. really humbling .

went to thailand for new year in 2006/7, wicked time, this song reminds me of it big time, beaches were ace, people sound, and weather second to none.

One of the best movies out there- you can't help but imagine "your secrete Island or place" as you are watching the film.
Somehow good movies are so rarely produced. This is one of those.

I remember this movie, this song, that year in southern Thailand, before the movie was released…. I loved it very much, and I still love it very much… My Beach is everywhere with me… That was my idea of pure paradise, Phi Phi Island, although my ferry caught fire and sunk on the way from Phuket… Unforgettable memory and beautiful people… In my dreams I am always somewhere on the Beach … What is your beach ?
