I'm glad to hear the losing ship is sent to another server, that was always my main argument against the idea of making running impossible. Now they've fixed both problems in this new system. Well done rare, this update looks absolutely amazing
I think it's great cause it means you won't be hunted down for the next 4 hours cause you won a ship fight.
Love this update, the fact I can battle against other solo sloopers on demand rather than getting smashed by bigger crews and ships is great, I’m not great at PVP but this allows me to get great practice, I’ve actually won 3 and lost two and thoroughly enjoyed it. Cannot wait to complete the plunder pass and get as much rep as possible to hopefully increase my wealth and reputation so I can see even more progression; it’s been a fantastic first day on season 8.
same I'm a mostly solo slooper. I can kill lots of ppl gun to gun, but my naval is pretty awful, especially playing solo. so this practice is so much fun with little to risk

I've hated PvP forever. I'm mainly a PvE player, always solo, relatively new to SoT, and usually sink within seconds. Today I sank my first ship - and then 4 more! Such a relief.
Same here. As mainly a solo slooper, I've avoided PvP mostly since it's always bigger crews I end up being attacked by, but this update means I can have some balanced duels. Only managed to take part in two fights and won them both so so far so good!

i have always been a pve player but because of this update i have tried it and figured out that i surprisingly really enjoy it enjoy it ,my first willing pvp since when i joined in season one
Now when you do pve, you can tell anyone who tries to steal from you "you choose the wrong boat, fool!" and proceed to sink them.

I do agree with a change to the supplies as they can be extremely unfair when it comes to a fresher spawn. Though taking the time to stock up shouldn't be discouraged. So I would say add a good amount default supplies to your first battle so you can just hop on and immediately begin the fight with a decent amount or take a bit more time and stock your ship up to get more supplies.
This season looks all around like a massive W for SOT as a whole.
My idea would be for Rare to ensure that you have, at the least, a full stack of cannon balls, a stack of coconuts, and a stack of planks. If you have less (say fresh spawn supplies), the game auto fills until you have a stack of each. If you have over a stack of each then the game doesn't give you anymore. I think this would be a good way to let people quickly hop in to the PvP while also giving everyone a baseline of supplies.
Or maybe just increase cannonballs, planks and food for default spawn.
@@igorlinhares8441 Honestly either one would work. Though I think getting a base stack of each item would help get people into the PvP faster and easier.
I think you should at least get a bit of food. Bananas are almost useless anyway
Nothing needs to change with the supplies if you choose to go into a battle with no supplies that your own fault and your own loss
Love this update only thing is I wish you could see your boat in 3rd person when it rises from the depths that would be so cinematic but apart from that LET THE FLAME BURN!

possible idea, an alternate skeleton cosmetic (for legs chest and head) to fit your original character outfit, so you can keep your hair and cloths and can still recolor your bones. Kinda like the Athena's got a curse option to let them keep their clothing colors and just have glowing eyes
The issue is remodeling all the clothes to fit a skeleton figure I believe. The ghost one doesn't change your model it just applies an effect to it but the skeleton is a different model entirely. That's why they opted to just make a few customisable pieces for the skeleton curse instead, less work.
@@skyblue2708 Makes sense, just wish there was something they could do to make that easier to make for folks since I know most were hoping for it. Still, the cosmetics we did get for a skeleton curse was weirdly better than I was personally expecting at least. Most curses aren't really customizable so I personally think its a good twist on an old cosmetic feature. Still a bit weird they weren't able to somehow incorporate the glowstick skeleton structure they have hidden under all the player models. Oh well, we'll have to wait to see what they have in store for the future.
Don't forget the hook and peg legs, but that should be easy enough I think-
Finally, it’s not the matchmaking I thought we’d get but it still works great! The fact I can now practice PvP at regular intervals without having to search the entire map for hours on end only to find one AFK sloop will help me practice and hone my skills tremendously, plus I’d get someone of a similar skill to myself, instead of accidentally stomping a new player or getting stomped by a legendary sea dog
I think the skeletal stuff has more future potential, Athena may have more curses atm, but the way the skelly cosmetics work leaves alot of room for new stuff. I think Athena had more stuff at the start cause it essentially re-used assets and skelly is all newish.
Agree, my main personal contempt for the skellies' cosmetics is that they all look rather... low rank... I really wish for more parts that resemble captains or skeleton lords
The skeleton curse is far more interesting of an option seeing as how customisable it is as a curse. Sure you can wear what you want as a ghost but it's not that interesting.
@@endertuber8300 yea I'm sure we will see more cosmetics as time goes on. They likely didn't want to put it all out there at once. I'm glad we got some things, like being a gold skelly. The ashen bone color is tied to doing the heart of fire tall tale so it's likely later cosmetics will be achievement based to show off what you've done as a skelly
It is great, but I got Rare'd last night. If you're playing an instrument and standing on the edge of the ship when you emerge from the water as , it will glitch you into the side of the ship. I learned the hard way after sinking 3 ships, and then getting stuck in the wall on the 4th, and sailing right by and out of bounds, sinking my ship. I experimented with it two more times after that, and it happened both times.
This update is incredible. My one gripe is the imbalance in the rewards. Sucks we can’t use our hair or clothes on the skeleton curse and Ghost curse gets no customisations like the Skelton curse just a piss recolour. Really happy with magpies wing stuff though so can’t complain there.
I think 4 months for development is better then 3. It takes a lot of time to even just make one asset, especially models. If they need the time ti make sure the updates work fairly well, then go for it
Also, I really think the reason they didnt add the normal clothing options to skeletons, is because they don't have the inside textured. Most clothing fuses with the player basically, so you don't have to see the insides. But on a skeleton, its visible.
There is a lot of clothes, so I don't think they gonna remake the insides. Maybe another way it will be done. We have to wait and see
This update has been an absolute blast. I've never been into PvP, but this has been some of the most fun I've had in a while, and I've even won 4 out of 4 matches. It's also nice to know that even when you lose, you get _some_ alignment, which is something I was actually hoping would be the case before the update came out.
However... my main critique is that the level requirement for the Legendary Blessing of Athena being _1000_ does not seem worth it, especially since each level gets harder and harder due to the skill scaling, and from what I'm seeing on the SoT Discord, many people share this opinion. In the last 10 hours, I've gotten 6 levels with consistent wins, meaning I have 94 levels to go before I can get the initial Blessing (long, but doable), then I have to do all that that 9 times over for the one ghost curse that actually fits my Ashen aesthetic. 100 is absolutely doable, and I'd even be fine with Legendary being 200, 250, or even 300. But 1000 seems incredibly out of reach.

Played for several hours today with the new pvp stuff, and I have been pleasantly surprised by how smooth the experience has been! Haven’t encountered any game-breaking bugs yet; props to Rare, they’ve knocked it out of the park!
love the update so far, rare really did a great job with this one espacially the diving and emerging from the water is sooo sick and feels so smooth.
only thing i dont belive is the matchmaking being skillbased the first few fights i easily won playing as solo sloop but after reaching rank 7 i started to match with such good players i lost all fights but one, where my opponent run out of wood and cannons and gave me the win... still best update so far, guess i have to get my pvp up to par or get one of my old arena sweat buddy back to play again to grind for my skelly curse

I respect the initial positivity towards them finally making some decent pvp content, just wait til more and more people start popping up against "allianced" ships and servers. Like yesterday, twice when my duo and I came up sloop v sloop, the other sloop had a galleon and brig ready to help them, so it was 2 v 9, then 2 matches later, sloop v sloop and 2 galleons. Fun times, well done, oh and 1 galleon left the circle to gather supplies, so even fighting against GOOD crew which is taxing enough at times on your supplies, imagine having 2 other crews ready to repair your enemy and resupply them

I've already tried a few fights with this new PvP system, and one of them had the combat area form around a Sea Fort, which added some nice extra chaos with the phantoms blasting volleys at both ships simultaneously! Now part of me is hoping I get matched into the Devil's Roar, so I can fight amidst a volcanic eruption!
I got a fight that was amidst the thick fog the comes over the Roar and it was hectic and so amazing!
I'm planning on baiting people into the ghost fleet

Besides the Skeleton curse not being able to be worn with clothes, this update is incredibly fun and I am glad to hear the community genuenly happy for once.
They need to fix the sinking ship glitch because I sunk twice in the pvp encounters and all it did was refuse to spawn my ship until I left and created a new one
The only problem I’ve found so far is that the queue times for Controller Only are really long, and playing PvP against PC players can sometimes be really difficult if they’re good at aiming with a mouse.
as someone who isnt very good at pvp and dies alot the most annoying part of this update is that you have to spend like 20 minutes stocking up on supplies after every loss or even win to even stand a chance in your next fight
To be honest, I want them to commit to the PVP changes a bit more and make it so theres a *decent* chance every time you are sunk by another ship to be merged onto another server at ALL times. Too many times have I been involved in a fight only for it essentially not ending up mattering as the ship in question respawns mere islands away from me ready to duke it out again with a refreshed ship. Singlehandedly the reason I have halted doing any FotDs or FoFs, ESPECIALLY as a solo slooper, but even with my less experienced occasional crew. Why fight over these when the only thing stopping another ship is their motivation to run the fight again? Make the experience of staying on the same server to rematch more exciting and less of a guaranteed occurrence, since I know damn well Rare has absolutely no intention of crippling a repeatedly sunk ship (and why would they? thats not fun for the receiver.) to prevent these constant runbacks. Plus then theres more on the line for Streamers and other high skill players when they invade allianced servers and/or just a busy server after a chat member has donated their ship.
Now that we've got the Reaper's Lair and an extension to the Legendary Hideout it's time we find out what's on the Second Floor of the Tavern!

Ehhh Im so sad, i just got destroyed twice by guys that got like 98% accuracy with cannons at ridiculous range, and then finally when got a 3 strike of wins my hourglass bugged out and couldn't start a new fight or cash it because "you are already in battle", fights where fun but the ending break my xC

I’ve got to say as a mostly PVE player I like it. The PVP players seem to after each other with the matchmaking, and I didn’t have a scrap of trouble with random roll ups today. It was good.

I’m a solo that never knew how good I was because of the various sizes of crews I was used to facing turns out I’m wild 2/0 for the flame a good start spmm going to make it a fun time when I’m facing sweats!
Yeah, I found out I do not stand a chance against more than one person team. I would lose all the time. Sorry, but I do not care for pvp. I am pve player. Sure, I know how to brawl because of playing my WOW rogue helped me. When it comes to canon fire, steering and reparing; I am at a loss. One reason why I run.

@@mountainrogue3448 Yeah, I tried it out to see what it would do. I was doing a ghost fort. Then when I was stacking the treasure, I saw something come up on my screen as I was in a combat for pvp. I just clicked on the hour glass and could not for the life of me, cancel it. I just told the other team to just sink me, I don't care.
You hit the hour glass, you are qued for a pvp encounter. It is like arena, it will either teleport you or the other guy to your location from what I have seen. The guy came out of nowhere.
@@cainabel6356 They did explain that once you activate it. Rival factions will eventually find you. Regardless. You have a 15 minute wait before you can disable it. My advice, as a pvp player. Don't activate the hourglass if you don't want pvp. But I am sorry you accidentally activated it

I’ve been grinding this through PVE only, gaining treasure and refusing fights in this out of principle as a PvE challenge player, until there’s a new way to progress this Athena’s Guardian Faction.
So far I’m already at 27. Though when people try joining on me I just scuttle to avoid the fight and not waste the other person’s time when I have 0 intention or interest in fighting them.
Kind of a shame but Rare hasn’t left me any other option to progress as someone who refuses to partake in PvP anymore.
My personal goal is to hit the Ghost Curse without ever sinking anyone in this mode as a challenge, as i did with hitting Reapers 75 with No PvP and no emissary flags, just PvE base turn in to their faction. I like the super long grinds like this :)

There is no better feeling than to run from a fight when I KNOW the person is raging because they don't get to

I might have misunderstood what you said about player and ship size, but When I was solo gally, just to test it, it was a 1v4 can you explain this?
I gave it a go this morning after downloading the update, no issues, found a ship fairly quickly. And emerging out of the sea is among the best things I've experienced in gaming

Personally think locking the legend curse behind a limited time battlepass was really dumb, should've been an earnable reward for legends from the very start. So I'm glad its back

The only criticism I have this update is cosmetics because we need the rest of the new forsaken ashes stuff and it feels like athena gets more love with cosmetics

Perhaps this is one of the envisioned uses of the sea forts and why they put them in the game? If you think of it, they could serve as resupply / loot points for ships that lost a battle, they pop up in another server, go to the nearest sea fort, gather what they need and get some basic loot to raise loot affinity, then head off again for another battle?
They were mainly made as a psuedo-world event that was easier for solo/new players to finish.
@@thepanman674 But in a pinch a ship and its crew that just lost a match could easily resupply and gather loot at one and jump back into another fight pretty well stocked
Not gonna lie... but flameheart winning last adventure really fits nicelly with this update...
I definitely think at least some supplies should be given to you. Maybe once you emerge from the waves or once someone invades your server, you could get supplies similar to arena where you barrels would get some coconuts and maybe pomegranates as well as wood, cannonballs, and a few chainshot. I can only really play like 5 hours a week, and if I have to spend half that time stocking up on supplies, it will really ruin the whole experience.

@@blumthomas3783 supplies from outpost barrels really isn't enough tbh. You're lucky if you get 1-2 pineapples, let alone curse balls. If you vote to represent a pvp faction and go do PvE activities, you'll be stocked as hell before a player pops up out of the water. I want to be able to queue up and PvP and stand a chance, at least supply-wise. I'm not asking for them to give me 50 chainshot and a bunch of curse balls, but give me some coconuts, maybe 10 chains, 50 balls, and like 2 of the top 3 curse balls, and we'll see what I can do with that.
Just buy supplies from the outpost before you leave........
I love this update, although solo slooping means you end up just going in lots of circles, or you get boarded and repeatedly killed as soon as you spawn in.
Thats part of being sunk, you'll ve doing the same to others before you know it.

Does the leveling up in the factions get harder as you keep upgrading? If so, getting the bone stuff for both factions will take years
It does, but only slightly. I'm at Servant 18 now and 10-18 has been a bit longer to level up

My first death this season was a new player sneaking up on me while I was selling treasure with a keg and blew up my ship and me it was an annoying death but it is what it is

I absolutely love this update but now that it's in play, I can't help but feeling the hourglass is a bit dead, I feel I face the same problem where there is a lack of fights where sometimes it feels like tunnel simulator while waiting for a match. It's hard to capture such a broad market like league or overwatch but I can't help but think there's something to spike it like the old days. I'm on Aussie servers by the way, might be different based on where you are 😅
The game has been killed by the desire of content creators for a couple of pennies worth of creating clips.
And before you come to say some sort of ad hominem, im level 121 at GoF and 101 at SoF. And i can assure you through Steam charts that the game has a drying playerbase thanks to this such unenjoyable update for casuals.

As someone who's a "pve player" even though I'm interested in PvP, this does sound like a really good update, your telling me that I can practice PvP whenever I can
As someone who does a lot of open crew, this update has messed up the whole experience. Before you’d get randoms who were lost looking for quick ways to make gold, so I’d do veils and partials athenas. But now every open crew thinks it able to pvp just cause we have people on the ship. Yes you do get the odd crew that is able to win but the vast majority are look to just fire themselves out of cannons and cry that we sunk. The worst part is in the off chance you don’t do pvp these players will just sit around while you and maybe 1 other crewmate finish the fort/voyage. I really hope this dynamic changes in the next few weeks.
advice is to just not do open crew, it truly is one of the worst ways to play sot sometimes, and its just better going to the sot server and looking for a group to play with. wanna duo with someone on a sloop? use lfg in sot's discord. wanting to play a full gally? same thing. you get a better experience overall because you can communicate with your crew and also know that your crew came to join you because they wanted to do the same things as you for the day, no more arguing about setting sail as a faction.
I really dislike the new start screen, I'd prefer a drawn/concept art still image of the characters rather than the almost still image with 3d models swaying back and forth

i disagree about the customization gripe, the fact that athena only gets existing clothes and an uncustomizable curses compared to an entirely new style of customization entirely is the unfair part, i seriously can't think of any reason someone would prefer the phantom curse over the skeleton curse

@@AShinyRay Very well. When you spawn at an outpost, you are the the mercy of RNG to give you good supplies. For example today, I was going into solo battles and after going through the whole island, I only had around 30 cannonballs while I had a full stack of wood. This meant unfortunately I had to buy more from the shipright and the Merchants. While relatively cheap, I would make a net loss on gold by losing the fight I go into. On top of that, if I was to lose, I would lose all of those supplies I just purchased and more. Because the game spawns you at an island majority of the time, there are very few barrels there to get supplies from, meaning you need to sail to an outpost and do it all over again, unless you have the confidence in fighting another ship with slightly better than default supplies. Other ships will certainly have more supplies and possibly curseballs if they've been doing PvE, which has been true for most of my encounters. I do wish for Rare to implement a better system for gaining supplies soon, perhaps having 30% of them saved after you sink in this type of fight. Of course, this can become problematic when enemies board your ship with a storage crate and take your supplies, but that is an issue for another day.

Supplies and cursed cannonballs should be given when matchmaking or something. Also I'm not happy they locked the stuff behind Reaper 75. Yes i get its the end game for reapers but they've gutted the rep you get for anything that isn't emissary flags that much that leveling it up is soul crushing and just isn't very fun at all. The bar barely moves when you sell anything to him that isn't a flag. Its all well and good if you already got to reaper 75 before the nerfs... but those of us who have a ways to go its locking content behind a massive grind that most people didn't have to do.

An awful return really. There was not point adding it due to getting a Full Ghost Curse 10 Levels before you would unlock the Legendary Curse.

I've enjoyed the update so far more than I thought and i got my new favourite hat the cursed bones one not flameheart's
i think that its fair for the pirate legends to get more rewards, it balances out the odds, you need that to keep people from only being sweaty reapers.
It's funny cuz ppl still run even if it is a small circle had someone run for an hour and a half till I finally gave up

Match maker didnt work at all for my friend and I yesterday.
Im only really participating to get the stranger's jacket, its going to be a slog for me because I generally suck at pvp unless I get lucky, and I dont have the best computer. and i feel like it gets boring and frustrating for me when solo slooping, either your both well stocked and the fight takes forever unless you board and sink them that way, or I get one balled and sank cause my blackscreens take forever, so then you get into another blackscreen as your transferred into another server, just a lot of waiting. and you dont get rep if you get sank by a person who third parties, at least I havent noticed.
I want to know where is Cap Flamehart and why we only see his red spectre?
Honestly the starter supplies just needs to go up in general. 15 planks and 16 bananas is kinda lame. Give us like 30 planks and 45 fruits of various kinds.
No one likes stocking up, but you should still get a little bit of a boost for putting in a bit of extra time to gather supplies

I'm hoping Rare will eventually do more customizations for the skelly curse much less allow us to wear our usual clothing as one. Even though I suck at PvP, this makes a great starting point and gives more space to improve upon my skills. The skelly curse shall be mine to take.. eventually, mark my words!
Can anyone tell me what there is that you can only get through sinking/killing people? Like technically you could max out allegiance without killing anyone. What is there just for sinking people?
If you REALLY wanted to, you could max out the allegiance by going into a fight with a bunch of holes on your ship or by sailing out of the zone. There are commendations for actually participating though so you won't get more than just the levels.
Its like if you tried to max out reapers by only selling stools or kega or something, you'll get there and it'll be slow but you'll be max level with no achievements to show for it.

@@walterblacc9909 Seeing how I mistakenly deleted my youtube comments, because I read it wrong at first, like I always do. If you are a pirate legend, meeting the criteria of having 3 factions of 50 or more, you will see an hour glass on your captain's table. You will flip it to the faction you want to fight for. You can get all the stuff you want from the Reapers side or the Athena's side if you can complete it all in time.
So yes, you should be able to earn both curses if you work hard to obtain them.
@@walterblacc9909 Wrong on one point. You do not have to be pirate legend to play the season. I am thinking that was for some of the islands or something to do with that matter. You will get to choose one side, then you can switch after taking down the side. That is what I have read on the matter.

I am a passive player but see a PvP player coming at me, can I then put up my allegiance on the same side as my attacker? and if I do, will they still sink me?
Wait the ship going under water is that just for this season? Because I have no friends to play this with and I wanna make sure I don't miss out on that part

Please tell me that enemy ships don't just pop up and force me to fight when i don't want to. What i mean is could i just be sailing without voting to fight and then a ship that has voted to fight comes up out of the sea???
Ships only come out of the water if you choose to represent a faction on the hourglass
And i can only get alligence by representing a faction?

The leveling is rather sht tho at level 19 it already starts gettin more than absurd leveling wise and level 1k im sorry how long do you wanna level until Theres sea of thieves 50 out?
I love how we’re actually able to fight for our team like an actual war/conflict instead of just doing a glorified cargo run over and over *ahem* Lost Sands *ahem*
So when winning fights you get allegiance automatically?

I played Four rounds today, we won the First round and we are trash as hell in pvp, but After that we were crashed by sweats. So much for Skill-Based-matchmake
