    This is part II of my series on how to deal with myofascial shoulder pain in the front of the shoulder.
    This pain is often caused by tensions and trigger points in your muscles, and mostly can be relieved by applying a self-massage.

    Thanks for the video, this is very useful information. I look forward to seeing how other muscles are related. It seems the whole left side of my body has trigger points.

    I'm getting a sharp pinching pain in my coracoid process area when I try to cross my arm over my body. It also hurts to go backwards as it feels like I'm pulling it apart. And forward if I have any weight in my hand. I can't seem to relieve it and it's making it hard to use my shoulder.

    Thanks for the clear and detailed instructions. Can you please tell me if performing these exercises on the ground -instead of the wall- is recommended? Are there any pros or cons to using the wall and any pros or cons using a mat on the floor?

    I feel so much looser now i ll do this everyday now until no front shoulder pain so I can go training again. I really appreciate these videos, best one of the hundreds I've seen
    also how long should I wait until I can go training again? until it's pain free or should i wait even longer for it to recover fully? I've had anterior shoulder pain reoccuring multiple times in the last 2 years

    Thank you man! I have had frontal shoulder pain for close to half a year now, and could never find the issue.
    After releasing my traps with a ball, the pain is gone temporarily and can freely move my shoulder again. After some time though, both the pain and tightness are back.
    So my question is; how long do I have to do these massages until the pain will be gone permanently?
    Again, thanks a lot!

    Good video, thanks. Two questions please: 1. I note that you do not directly massage the anterior shoulder (the anterior deltoid), but rather the muscles around it. Is there a reason for this? 2. Why do you not prescribe stretching (only massage) to relieve shoulder pain? Is stretching ineffective for this purpose? Thank you.

      Great question. You are right, I should have shown you the massage of the anterior deltoid, too. But you can look it up here: www.muscle-joint-pain.com/trigger-points/trigger-point-self-treatment/deltoid/
      Concerning stretching: Stretching can be a great tool to relieve pain by altering the biomechanics, but it would have been overkill including it here. Stretching can be important. In my videos I mainly focus (currently) on self-massage, as this is the very first step when it comes to pain relief. Self-massage works symptomatic, it can relieve pain. Afterwards strengthening and stretching come into play, too.

      Thanks very much for the reply! I love your site- perhaps the best on self-massage I have encountered. For my anterior shoulder pain, I have found that the doorway stretch is very effective for releasing the pec minor, which may become overactive from chest exercises, thus allowing a re-centration of the humerus within the shoulder joint, which in turn can relieve some of the shoulder pain.
      What is your view about the origin of trigger points: are they a cause or a symptom (nervous system 'protective' response) to muscle trauma/fatigue/overuse?

    • @painotopia
      @painotopia  5 років тому

      Yes that stretch is pretty good. Concerning your question. I think both is possible. However they are more often a symptom of overuse/abuse. Still, they also can impair muscle recruitment and this way indirectly be a potential cause for injury, as the impaired recruitment in my opinion leads to suboptimal movement. On top of that I think joint misalignement is also a topic here that we need to consider.

      Great answer. Thank you! One last question please: when I run a massage ball along my left deltoid (which was sore for several weeks), I still feel bumps and ridges, which could either be tendons or trigger points. There is no pain, however. Is this normal? Ideally, should all muscles be smooth under the massage ball?

    I have been suffering of my shoulder pain since 3 years. I will try your massage soon. But the balls should be hard one isn’t? And must I stop working out for a time or it’s ok?

    • @painotopia
      @painotopia  5 років тому

      No the ball does not have to be hard. It has be be comfortable.
      If the ball is too hard you might not be able to relax during the massage and then it becomes less effective. Continue your workout, but you might need to reduce intensity. Everything that does NOT hurt is allowed. Everything that aggrevates your pain is NOT OK. It´s really as easy as that. Listen to your body :).
