A lot of bands, possibly even the majority of them, go through a drummer or two, and nobody really notices it since most of them are pretty similar. However, some bands' sound is partly defined by their drummer, and going through a drummer change would have a noticeable effect. The National is one of those bands.
Pearl Jam is a fine example as well. All four drummers who recorded and played live with them for longer periods of time have had a significantly different feel, but are different beasts in their own right.
I kinda knew who they were but this SNL show was the first time I saw them. I was already impressed but when he started screaming I jizzed my pants...... So amazing!
Michael Bulls You know a band is great when they have an awesome set on TV. I feel like TV performances always fall flat but they managed not to do so. Yay band! :)
Could not agree more! As interesting & driving as Bryan is on the records, even more impressive live. He is mesmerizing to watch. I honestly think he has way more to do with what people like about this band than they realize.
+Ronda Gupton-Pruett I wish good drummers like him could get more camera time. It would really help learning drummers get an idea for what drumming is supposed to look like.
Definitely had chills. Wonderful live band, perfect. I've been listening to have a week and I am very impressed with the quality, the influences are remarkable. They are generally fantastic poetically, instrumentally and the voice is mesmerizing.
It seemed obvious that he became overwhelmed by the emotion of the song. After it's over you see him quake a bit still feeling it. I think the screaming was an attempt to finish strong and bring some closure to it all. He could barely contain himself though. Then again I'm drunk and it's 2am so who knows
I forget where I heard or read this, but I remember Matt saying that because “Graceless” is a very wordy song, he only screams at the end if he remembers all the lyrics, so that the screaming is a nice little incentive to remember the lyrics. Could have just been his attempt at humor, though!
Parker Bowman Mr. November and Abel from Alligator are the two that come to mind immediately. It was a "couple times an album" thing before Boxer came out.
I love the growling, The National should do that more often, it's so Nirvana shiiii.t but it so contagious. and it contrast so good from the low acoustics from the desperate shouts. That's why I love The National since the beginning
It’s one of the things I miss most on newer albums. He does it some much more on sad songs and alligator, and slowly less per album. Still love their stuff but I miss the growling
I'm a pro drummer. Personally whoever this dude is? My personal top 15 ever. Nothing necessarily difficult. Just absolutely brilliant this entire album. I put it in the Paul Cook category on bullocks. Every beat was perfection to each song. I cannot do that through one tune! Sort of like, of course Malmsteen could outplay Page. Who ya rather listen to?
I was flipping through the channels the night this aired and just happened to catch it live. It was mesmerizing. Had never heard of the band before that night - I don't get out much. I was hooked instantly.
i just googled the shit to find out what band this was... i forgot the name, ive heard the band name before but didn't know they sounded this good... glad i found it. i searched every band that played a late nite show in the past month.
I would like to see this re-cut to use the footage of Matt screaming into the microphone, rather than what was shown live with Aaron and Bryce fearing for their lives while they try to play through the end of the song.
Graceless Is there a powder to erase this? Is it dissolvable and tasteless? You can't imagine how I hate this Graceless I'm trying, but I'm graceless Don't have the sunny side to face this I am invisible and weightless You can't imagine how I hate this Graceless I'm trying, but I've gone Through the glass again Just come and find me God loves everybody, don't remind me I took the medicine when I went missing Just let me hear your voice, just let me listen Graceless I figured out how to be faithless But it will be a sheme to waste this You can't imagine how I hate this Graceless I'm trying, but I've gone Through the glass again Just come and find me God loves everybody, don't remind me I took the medicine and I went missing Just let me hear your voice, just let me listen All of my thoughts of you Bullets through rotten fruit Come apart at the seams Now I know what dying means I am not my rosy self Left my roses on my shelf Take the wild ones, they're my favorites It's the side effects that save us Grace Put the flowers you find in a vase If you're dead in the mind it will brighten the place Don't let them die on the vine, it's a waste Grace There's a science to walking through windows There's a science to walking through windows There's a science to walking through windows There's a science to walking through windows without you All of my thoughts of you Bullets through rotten fruit Come apart at the seams Now I know what dying means I am not my rosy self Left my roses on my shelf Take the wild ones, they're my favorites It's the side effects that save us Grace Put the flowers you find in a vase If you're dead in the mind it will brighten the base Don't let them die on the vine, it's a waste Grace Grace Put the flowers you find in a vase If you're dead in the mind it will brighten the base Don't let them die on the vine, it's a waste Grace
***** She's just one of those generally divisive people. She gets the kind of equal love and hate usually reserved for a politician or a pop singer. I love her, but everyone I meet can't stand her.
Bryan Devendorf's drumming on this performance is superhuman.
Definitely one of my biggest drumming influences.
Totally...
So effortless
Hes unbelievable ..such an awesome drummer. Its almost like his hands are floating.
Faultless performance.
Love how he freakin rocks out at the end. His voice pulverizes me.
They are excellent live
SAME. that "GRACE!" better than studio version
A lot of bands, possibly even the majority of them, go through a drummer or two, and nobody really notices it since most of them are pretty similar.
However, some bands' sound is partly defined by their drummer, and going through a drummer change would have a noticeable effect. The National is one of those bands.
R.E.M. is a good example of a drummer leaving changing their sound.
The Cure as well
Pearl Jam is a fine example as well. All four drummers who recorded and played live with them for longer periods of time have had a significantly different feel, but are different beasts in their own right.
Bands like Tool and Dave Matthews Band, were they to lose their drummer, would likely disband or form another band under a different name.
ano its not a drummer but when interpol lost their bass player
I love how my friend, who had never seen The National live before, was so confused when he started screaming the lyrics. Gotta love Mr. Berninger. :)
I kinda knew who they were but this SNL show was the first time I saw them. I was already impressed but when he started screaming I jizzed my pants...... So amazing!
yes, I feel like there is truly no hope to find in this song, it's pure darkness which I love. It hits me everytime
Michael Bulls You know a band is great when they have an awesome set on TV. I feel like TV performances always fall flat but they managed not to do so. Yay band! :)
It wasn't until the 3rd time or 4th time watching this that Matt;s screaming didn't make me tear up. It's already such an intense song.
TheEaglezfan10 you are a profane jerk. You are TASTELESS.
The drummer is a fucking machine. Goddamn great.
Could not agree more! As interesting & driving as Bryan is on the records, even more impressive live. He is mesmerizing to watch.
I honestly think he has way more to do with what people like about this band than they realize.
John Lennon of drums. Literally. I love him
Ronda Gupton-Pruett Absolutely Agree.
+Ronda Gupton-Pruett I wish good drummers like him could get more camera time. It would really help learning drummers get an idea for what drumming is supposed to look like.
ILikeWafflz OMG right? As a learning drummer myself I always bitch about this.
The greatest band. Matt is an amazing singer, we can see him leaving all the heart and feelings always he sings, and in this video we clearly see it.
Saw them for my first time in OH this past Saturday 9/21/24 with The War on Drugs......just unreal what a great show. 10/10 would go again.
Hey I was there too! Cheers man.
Still gives me goosebumps years later. Love The National!
When Matt starts screaming ... goosebumps
sliverradio
that's what brings me back time and again 2 this video!
I want to live in his drumming!!
Berninger hitting his mic on his leg between screams, great guitar playing and a kick ass drummer.... The National are just wonderful!
the National is like audio narcotics.
accurate.
TRUTH
Definitely had chills. Wonderful live band, perfect. I've been listening to have a week and I am very impressed with the quality, the influences are remarkable. They are generally fantastic poetically, instrumentally and the voice is mesmerizing.
Now I can see their influence on folklore/evermore sound. So good! I didn't knew them
Brysn Devendorf's rising, foreboding cadence is the foundation around which The National's brilliance is built. He's superlatively good.
It seemed obvious that he became overwhelmed by the emotion of the song. After it's over you see him quake a bit still feeling it. I think the screaming was an attempt to finish strong and bring some closure to it all. He could barely contain himself though. Then again I'm drunk and it's 2am so who knows
drunks just tell truths, so yeah, it's all right
Still gives me chills
I forget where I heard or read this, but I remember Matt saying that because “Graceless” is a very wordy song, he only screams at the end if he remembers all the lyrics, so that the screaming is a nice little incentive to remember the lyrics. Could have just been his attempt at humor, though!
I look for this song when I've had a few. Its perfection.
This song is so powerful, never fails at giving me the chills.
Feel same way.. When did you fell in love?
I really wish Matt would still get scream-y on record. Haven't heard him do anything like the end of the song here since Alligator.
In the last couple lines of the studio version, he is displaying some pretty intense vocals though
+Dale Mark
What songs has he done this on? I am interested to listen to that.
Parker Bowman Mr. November and Abel from Alligator are the two that come to mind immediately. It was a "couple times an album" thing before Boxer came out.
+Parker Bowman Available
+Dale Mark I'm from Russia. This guy has imposed sanctions on me, for what?
One of the best bands out there, no question. Amazing.
"God loves everybody, don't remind me."
Best. Lyrics. Ever.
I have been searching for this band for about 5 months.. totally worth it!!
4:07 Too much Berninger for the camera to handle.
HOLY SHIT-- THE END WHEN HE STARTS SCREAMING. I am crying right now. Bless him.
Saw this on SNL. Came back for the screaming part at the end!
Increible!! como golpea el myc, como grita, su rabia, es fantástico el climax
they're really really good live :) if ever an opportunity, I recommend seeing them live
I finally got to see them live on Sunday, 25-Feb-2024 in Wellington, NZ, sheer Heaven
thank you Saturday Night Live for this!!!!! I was blown away and now I love this band.
the best BAND of our time
Just the utter emotion of Matt hitting the mic.
Probably the best musical performance in SNL history.
Honestly, too good for a random SNL performance
I love how he turns the mic towards the audience after he’s done. It’s like he’s saying, “what do you have to say to that?”
Miglior pezzo del disco nuovo
This is an awesome group. I wish I heard about them sooner.
Best SNL musical guest in a long, long time....
Don't forget Beck's SNL show, performing 2 songs!!
I agree, I feel like TV sets usually suck and The National were phenomenal even on TV. Sign of a great band.
Absolutely. It is one of the best live performances on snl. For sure. And i've been watching for a long time. I was stunned when I saw this live .
Their drummer is another brother - Brian Devendorf!! Awesome, indeed.
This song makes me weep 😢 it’s so . . . sensual, I know, odd word to use, and then the way Matt ends it, love it 🙌🏼
The most underrated band on earth, they sing the truth, he's singing from God.
refreshing to see a group of guys suffering male patterned baldness, like myself, finally get some respect.
Rockwater77 they all seem to rock it
I'm a pro drummer. What a fuccin great band.
I was flipping through the channels the night this aired and just happened to catch it live. It was mesmerizing. Had never heard of the band before that night - I don't get out much. I was hooked instantly.
Never seen this band but this performance made me a believer!
Such a great band. So real and so true.
I can't believe there are not a million plus views. Brilliant band.
Hi I recommend an indie song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
I wish I had Berninger's voice. Like seriously.
he kinda looks like jurgen klopp
And the twin brothers look like Jordan Peterson
Flawless band, as always.
Awesome song, awesome band...well done boys!
The goosebumps are real!
just brilliant. always on thieir game.... just such a great band
AMAZING!!!
This is my new favourite thing.
The drummer 👌
i just googled the shit to find out what band this was... i forgot the name, ive heard the band name before but didn't know they sounded this good... glad i found it. i searched every band that played a late nite show in the past month.
this stuff is the real stuff
love it
Amazing song...
I would like to see this re-cut to use the footage of Matt screaming into the microphone, rather than what was shown live with Aaron and Bryce fearing for their lives while they try to play through the end of the song.
Damn i still remember this snl performance. Love how he gets so exhilarated at the end, he can barely contain himself
Graceless
Is there a powder to erase this?
Is it dissolvable and tasteless?
You can't imagine how I hate this
Graceless
I'm trying, but I'm graceless
Don't have the sunny side to face this
I am invisible and weightless
You can't imagine how I hate this
Graceless
I'm trying, but I've gone
Through the glass again
Just come and find me
God loves everybody, don't remind me
I took the medicine when I went missing
Just let me hear your voice, just let me listen
Graceless
I figured out how to be faithless
But it will be a sheme to waste this
You can't imagine how I hate this
Graceless
I'm trying, but I've gone
Through the glass again
Just come and find me
God loves everybody, don't remind me
I took the medicine and I went missing
Just let me hear your voice, just let me listen
All of my thoughts of you
Bullets through rotten fruit
Come apart at the seams
Now I know what dying means
I am not my rosy self
Left my roses on my shelf
Take the wild ones, they're my favorites
It's the side effects that save us
Grace
Put the flowers you find in a vase
If you're dead in the mind it will brighten the place
Don't let them die on the vine, it's a waste
Grace
There's a science to walking through windows
There's a science to walking through windows
There's a science to walking through windows
There's a science to walking through windows without you
All of my thoughts of you
Bullets through rotten fruit
Come apart at the seams
Now I know what dying means
I am not my rosy self
Left my roses on my shelf
Take the wild ones, they're my favorites
It's the side effects that save us

0:23 When Bass and Drums are FUCKING KILLING IT
Matt is glorious. That was amazing.
Seen these guys perform at made in america in philly. Now have a new favorite band
I'm so fucking excited! Going to see these guys April 28-29 in Cincinnati!!!
Boxer by The National is like one of the best albums ever made. Like cmon people
I love this song!
Wow, the last 30 seconds RULE!
Amazing song rock 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Hi I recommend a song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
Damn I love The National. I've been wanting to see them for a few years now. Come to Bristol, UK, please!!
I'm always so happy to see you guys getting recognition. You deserve it
Amazing band
This and the band "Of Monsters and Men" are the best 2 music performances in a very long time! Love it.
I Love this song. Its awesome!
Total talent
watching this in 2024!
Everything about this video is cool. Esp the beginning!
Bella...
They sound SO GOOD in this live performance. SNL Studio never disappoints.
that screaming at the end made me so dam happy
this is awesome! i love it!
When did you fell in love?😉
Of all the SNLs, I miss this one?
I KNOW, RIGHT!!!! I was just thinking the exact thing.
You didn't miss much, beside the performances nothing was truly outstanding, Lena Dunham sucks.
mavricksone ya, i would agree that most of the show wasnt as good as it could have been, and I HATE Lena dunham
***** I guess its not really about her, but I hate her show "Girls," and I dislike her reactions to things outside of her shows
***** She's just one of those generally divisive people. She gets the kind of equal love and hate usually reserved for a politician or a pop singer. I love her, but everyone I meet can't stand her.
Soo cool
The twins = Merry from the Lord of the rings.
Goosebumps for sure!
That last time I saw a band truly amazing, inspirational, and rock on SNL in years. Not some usual blasae hybrid of Mumford & Sons or Coldplay...
Wowser! . It's the reincarnation of Ian Curtis.
hell yeah scott
- Graceless - Very Good i Like, it !👍👏
When Matt starts getting into at the end, why in the world did the camera pan away from him?
Amazing
Singer is William Hurt's doppelganger
Definently, the most of the views, are mine!
Walter White has a surprisingly lovely voice
Bryan is my favorite drummer today. That is all.
Genial!
SNL, what a great show... Still putting on the best!!!😜
i wanna give him some wine and kiss him on the forehead
😍😍😍
Not one dislike. Right on boys! Keep it up.
“I’m going through the glass again, come and find me”
