Bought a '23 RF Club in June. Yes, the roof operation was a big annoyance. Check out MX5things: I got their roof controller, window controller, ACC power controller and Horn Fuse Relocation jumper. One-touch roof operation (up to 48 KPH); one-touch windows up; use your key fob to open/close the roof & windows.
Congratulations on the new car love to see people winning. Yes, I am aware about the mod but was not sure where was best to get it from so thank you soo much for the information/recommendation. Yes, still can't believe from factory the limit was 6mph and you have to keep your hand on it the whole time to work but guess it was a safety feature . Hope you are loving the Miata life style and hope you enjoyed the video if so consider dropping a subscribe as I will have more videos in the pipeline including cheap mods that make the car better :)
Agree with everything, but my 2020 RF has wired Apple Car Play that works perfectly. I find the Russian roulette of trying to time the roof operation at traffic lights to be great fun!
Hahahah I am certainly getting better at calculating if it is viable to get the top up or down between lights but sometimes you just got to spin that wheel ;)
What happens if it's in the process of either opening or closing and you start driving faster than 6 mph? Does it finish?
@@derekisthematrix It just pauses the process until you are slow enough for it to complete. You do have to press the button again, but no harm done.
I wish Mazda would delete the cheap looking and feeling infotainment screen. In its place, simply use an adjustable mount or in-dash cubby with usb-c connector for smart phones. Keep the interior clean.
No way if they do this it will be like trying to add an Android/Carplay radio in it. I won't ever buy a car I can't put carplay in. If you look at how people are putting them into s2000s its so bad looking and it's right by their main heater vent. Once you go carplay you don't go back to playing with your phone for music. One of the coolest things you can do to most older sports cars is throw in a good touchscreen for a hundred bucks+
the 2024 model just upgraded the infotainment
Turn the glove box lock key the full 90 degrees to the 3 o'clock position before you remove the key and it'll lock just fine. It makes an audible click when you turn it enough. It's plainly visible at 6:50 that you stopped short.
I have a 2017 base RF in Ceramic Pearl. My minor gripes are A) storage, or the lack thereof, B) no Apple CarPlay and dealers here in Australia want over $500 to install it, C) gearbox is a little noisy on overrun (it’s only done 15000km/9000 miles). That said, it’s piss funny to drive.
Well you are English so it’s privileged to winge. I’ve had my nc for several years now, the best car I’ve ever owned. Just ordered the nd3 soft tp 2024 I have to wait 3-4 months so I’ll have to enjoy my nc till then. Thanks mazda for a great car.
Hahaha indeed it is but I am actually French :). It is an amazing car and damn you gonna have two MX5 I am jealous I want a NA MX5 but do like the look of the NC especially with a good body kit. Just a quick tip, if you use some autoglym heavy metal polish on your exhaust tips they get a really stunning chrome like finish. I used it on my 2019 RF which I got used, and the difference was night and day!

mx5things is selling a module to remove the speed limit of operating the roof and also can make it remotely controlable. With an ACC module you can also open the roof with keyfob without powering the car. Another two drawbacks I think are no one press up/down window feature and cannot operate the screen when speed is over 10 or 15.
Yes!!! the windows not being one press up is annoying indeed and not really acceptable for a relatively new car. I did not know about the screen until now thank you for breaking the news to me. :'(

My centre glovebox lock works perfectly.
The key in the fob is the ONLY thing that locks and unlocks it. Screwdrivers don’t unlock it, and fingers certainly don’t.
If anyone can unlock the glovebox without the key, the lock is broken and needs to be replaced.
My glove box locks fine. Any other key, screwdriver, or a fingernail does not turn the lock. Of course, you could just pry it open, I guess. This guy has the magic touch!
Did you have any problems with the water drain? Did you come across with flood or clogged? How often do you need to pull everything apart to clean it.. for anyone who is planning to get a ND RF really have to look into this issue… which wasn’t mentioned from most reviewers which can lead to a deal breaker.
I'm so tired of owners only saying what they love about their cars so your review is refreshing...especially since I may buy one. What's the rear left vision like out of the rear window with the roof up for lane changing and what about getting in and out of it?

I’m pretty sure anyone buying a Miata knows the shortcomings you “hate”. I have to laugh about the 6mph limit for putting up the top. Why I hell would you try to do it while driving anyway? Just pull over and do it safely. After 3 convertible Corvettes, I only got caught in the rain once. And that was enough.
Thank you for commenting :) True but relatable videos do well + helps new people who are thinking about buying the car about the quirks of a car. You clearly do not live in the UK otherwise you would know how temperamental the weather can be and forecasts are useless in the UK. Most cars have a roof operating speed limit of between 15-30mph. I would say in a ideal world you would like to pull over but for example if coming out of a parking garage, start and stop traffic, parking up on the drive way (I have a fairly long drive way) or even just get caught out at the lights the 6mph limit can be crippling. I would say 15mph would still be safe and a much more acceptable speed limit. You could make the same argument for buying a fast car like a corvette whats the point when there are speed limits or why let cars have huge BHP or Top speed limits above 70mph. Been to the UK and Scotland and we had a rental SUV. Í can emphasize with you about the rain. Since we live in North Carolina, the rain falls less often here. I am sure you know about aftermarket kits to fix that 6 MPH problem. And yes it is frustrating to drive a 435 HP car in 70 MPH areas. At age 74, I am trading that speed with an auto transmission for the lighter, more nimble fuel sipping Miata with the 6 speed manual. I almost bought a bug eye Austin Healy sprite about 55 years ago but felt I would need a third job to keep it running. Now I want a well crafted, economical, fun to drive true sports car. I can’t decide whether to buy a 2023 or wait for a 2024. I hear they have finally listened and are offering a tan interior for 2024. Can’t wait!
im currently split between getting the RF hardtop and the soft top. I love the great sporty fastback look the hardtop provides but i also love the practicality of the soft top and that since its mechanical aswell, theres no electronics failure to worry about down the road.
The RF is overpriced for what it is, has a smaller trunk than the soft top, bad blind spots and it also adds a couple hundred extra pounds to the overall weight which sucks …. But it looks SO much better than the soft top. Reminds me of a bad ass jaguar roadster or something. I am going with the RF when I purchase mine just for the looks
I would say top down the soft top looks better in every single angle but top up the RF definitely wins. If the car was not my daily I would of most likely got the soft top as the hard top is heavier (but not as much as people think). Also to note most external warranties will cover the electronic roof unlike the previous generations.
The RF is definitely over priced for what it is but it does helps the car be more rigid around corners. There are definitely pro's and con's of the hard top vs soft top and maybe that will be a video in the future. What I will say is it does not eat up into the trunk space at all. It was designed to take the same area as the soft top and actually instead provides an extra 9 litres of space - I would suggest there is more space then then this with the hard top variant and have a video coming up to demonstrate this so stay tuned and if you like the video please consider subscribing.
@@hellaacapella I doubt anybody would recognize the trunk being smaller in the RF since the difference is only 3 liters (only 2,3%) And it's only like 50kilos of extra weight, so that's not a real lot. Wind noises are louder when the top is down, tho.
Have read a lot of Miata RF reviews and have not seen one about a RF top failure. Back in the 60’s, convertibles were either manual or hydraulic. The hydraulics sometimes failed but the RF is all electric. And the Japanese take pride in their automotive design. No worries about top failure with an RF.
My apologies for calling you English 😅. I would love to keep the nc but I only have one garage ☹️. I believe the reason for the smaller boot opening is for strength of the car. Thanks again for calling me out your nationality we New Zealanders don’t like being called Australian either 😂😂
Live with the paint. It is a special extra cost paint. A real stunning color! What about a front end coating on the car?
My 93Le had chips all over the front. Never repainted it after 20+ years

I love my MX5 and most of that stuff i am ok with except....the thin paint and stone chips irritate me beyond measure, but i think most if not all manufacturers use water based paint these days, so thinner paint for weight saving is probably the same on all roadsters, also i read somewhere that metallic paint adds about 15 pounds to the car's weight. I am still laughing at your reaction to the centre cubby hole lock thing, but i agree totally that its pretty pathetic that you can open it with your finger! Oh yes, my train is better than yours.😄
The placement of some of the stone chips are a mystery on how it happened. That's actually quite interesting although, I would take the extra weight over the increased chance of rust especially being based in the UK. Thank you for watching through the whole video there is now a follow up video :)
I'm glad they changed the cubby -- things no longer fall out as they did in th NC, but it's a real contortion trying to open it while driving. As far as the lock is concerned, it's like my dad said -- locks are for honest people. The bloke who would try to open it, locked or unlocked, will likely be successful and if locked will break it.
@@ke4gbe Yes a serial scumbag will likely get past most security but also you have to contend with the casual scumbag, one of those lowlifes broke the driver's door glass on my van, didn't take anything just did it seemingly for fun! 🤬

Paint sucks due to all the govt regulations over the years. Add in with machines applying the paint, they use less and here we are with chipping paint. Seems no one has any financial interest in developing an environmentally paint that is as durable as paint from the 50's,60's,70's. Solution unfortunately as you said is PPF the car which isn't cheap. So much for progress in this area...lol.
Had my 2023 PPF wrapped from new. Mazda paint is known to be too soft. Lock on the glove box thing is a joke.
Unless things have dramatically changed, nobody here has mentioned rust.

Found you while looking at videos related to ND MX5s, and yes - I can confirm I have largely the same gripes. I don't get actual crashes on my infotainment very often (maybe once every 40-50 drives), but the touchscreen speed cutout is an absolute killer.
Regarding the roof, try a combination of the mx5things roof controller and igg/acc module. Between these two, you can remotely drop/open the roof, and set the speed up to I think 30mph.
Also - You missed whinging about the cup holders though, which are absolutely useless as they're both too shallow and too wide.
Hello from the UK!!! Thank you for the advice I will have to check it out and yes it sounds very similar to mine with the infotainment system it is very rare but annoying regardless. Have not needed to use the cup holders a whole lot yet but have had it a few times where the bottles have fallen out when braking even remotely hard. Using a touchscreen while driving can be dangerous or fatal. Using the knob can be done without taking your eyes off the road. I know there are badass multitaskers out there, but please don’t ride my rear while attempting to use your touchscreen. My ‘08 Vette had a touchscreen and a warning came on every time you started the car. Maybe auto designers know something……..
Removing Mazda SD card is supposed make faster and reduce help the restarts. I removed mine yesterday so a bit early to tell. I use Waze with Carplay so did not need or realize even it was there...

Get inozetek dandelion yellow wrap, look it up how MX-5s look in it. I think it's the best color for this car.
I was thinking about acid or lime green but just had a look at the colour you mentioned and wow that colour is mega. Added to the list of potential colours.

And normally I always leave my wallet in my car. First time I used the center console i thought wtf I could open that thing with a toothpick. 😂
