    You are a lifesaver! I'm in central Tennessee and am hitting ledge at 4 feet. I tried 7 different spots and no joy. Now I know I can excavate a trench and lay my rods horizontal to satisfy code. Thank you!

    Hey man great video. Right to the point and quick talking! Love it! Other videos talk too slow lol
    And it’s accurate. I’m a master electrician and these videos are god reference.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you. Nuttin but hard hard shale where I live not too far from the Potomac River. Getting ready to run an underground feeder to my garage. I will definitely run 2 rods in that trench instead of fighting them vertically.

    I came across a "SMOKING" grounding electrode at a house that was connected to the subpanel cabinet in a lug. I know you don't need to install an electrode anywhere other than at the main electrical panel and meter area. What I don't understand is what caused the grounding electrode at the subpanel to spark, pop, and smoke? I simply removed the grounding conductor from the electrode to the lug in the subpanel. When I did that, it immediately stopped smoking. Can you tell me why that happened? i have not, or at least I don't remember, ever seeing that happen in my 42 years of being an Electrician. Thank you for any help to understand what caused that and the theory behind it. Keep up the good work. I love your videos,,,, Let's Get To It!

      Thank you for sharing,
      It could have been several things, but there's a high probability that the neutral beating that panel was compromised and it was trying to get back to the source through the Earth via the ground rod.
      They're also could have been a standing fault that was attempting to clear via the ground rod, but there was too much resistance to clear the fault so it was acting as an element.

      Definitely work with your local electrical inspector, but you can dig a trench that is 30 in deep or follow any of the other methods lay out there in 250

    I believe your ground clamp must be accessible burying it is questionable where is the code section 250 does it say u can bury ground clamps thanks.

    Nice video, did not know the 2 grounds rods do not have to be directly connected. I had an electrician tell me 2 ground rods were bad. I had driven a second rod years back and disconnected it, I may run new wire back to panel and get it hooked back up.

      @@ElectricalCodeCoach Thanks, My 2 rods are about 25 feet apart. The original is connected to the plumbing then the panel as 1 direct wire. I was going to connect the other the same way. I also have copper plumbing and made sure I have bonding jumper across the pressure regulator. I assume there is not such thing as too much grounding.

    Lots of videos on how to install ground rods, but none that say WHERE, does it have to run to the panel, or can a service line from the panel go to the meter and ground there?

    What about using sheathed wire and cutting a section out where connecting to the rod does it have to be bare wire

    Dose the code allow for an all copper grounding rod that is eight feet long instead of a heavy copper plating rod ??? A two hundred amp service needs what size copper wire connection size too ??? Thanks

    • @ElectricalCodeCoach
      @ElectricalCodeCoach  2 роки тому +2

      The ground rod is required to be 8 ft in length
      It is allowed to be one of the compositions listed in 250
      As far as size it depends what type of electrode you are terminating to. And if you're terminating to other electrodes.

    if you connect the two rods does it need to be one continuous wire to the panel or can you have two mechanical connections on one rod?

      The best would be using a meter, you can buy used ones online. Thanks for the comment!

    Hi coach. Can we use insulated grounding electrode conductor? I saw a white wire installed as grounding electrode conductor, is it okay or violation?

  • @anthonyb5291

    Question: When installing a 8ft ground rod horizontally 30inches deep. Do you need to install (2) ground rods 6ft apart? So your trench total would need to be 22ft?
    Question 2: Say your hitting rock and you don’t have the space to lay a 8ft ground rod or 2. Is there a NEC approved plate you can buy that you can burry in the ground? If so how deep?

    • @ElectricalCodeCoach
      @ElectricalCodeCoach  3 роки тому +1

      Great question!! you still will need the second ground rod or other approved supplement.
      Even with the "plate" electrode they are required to be supplemented!! Thanks!!!!

    Is there literally nothing talking about how to hammer an 8ft rod into the ground? Are we all assuming the only method is a sledge ?

  • @Inkling777
    @Inkling777 2 роки тому +1

    Does the ground rod have to be a rod? I've got some #6 copper wire I could strip and bury in a trench. That'd spare me the $20 x 2 cost of copper-plated rods plus the cost of the connectors. There'd also be no risk of corrosion in the connectors.
