- The former Post Office boss Paula Vennells has denied trying to influence the independent investigation into the Horizon IT scandal - as emails emerged revealing that she saw managing the media as an urgent priority. The inquiry chairman had to intervene during groans of derision from the public gallery.

As I read elsewhere, women like her want the authority of a man, combined with the privilege of a woman and the responsibility of a child.
The quality of obfuscation was first class, as was her forgetfulness. Neither of which are qualities of a CEO or an Anglican priest. If she doesn't end up sewing mailbags, there is something wrong with British justice.
After seeing the responses from Tory ministers at the Covid enquiry, "I don't remember" has become part of the linguistic landscape for the guilty.

Marvellous piece of video editing to show her getting in the car, oh it just happened to contain the shouts from the bystander … I think it sums up a growing common belief about her . The court of public opinion seems ready to pass judgement. Now the CPS better sharpen their pencils and consider carefully what charges they will bring. If they bungle this they too will get tarred with the same brush.

@@jfkoetse The "I can't recall" defence is cutting very little ice in this case as there's an avalanche of proof that senior management of the Post Office and their hired thugs manufactured evidence to have innocent people falsely convicted of embezzlement then repeatedly perjured themselves before the courts and a parliamentary committee.
If Vennels and her lackeys don't get prison time for this then the entire British justice system will be brought into disrepute.

@@lisasei-leise287 I genuinely think they succeed because they're amoral and are wholly lacking in any kind of understanding of the limitations which ordinary people live within - morality is one word, for that, I suppose, or decency, perhaps. They camouflage it well, purely because they know that to be open about their outlook would invite censure. This means they take cues from others about what can be expressed, and how, without thinking about changing their behaviour or gaining any insight into themselves. Having worked with some of these people for a fairly heavyweight company, they're superficially charming, but absolutely unsettling.

Because she’s on trial and hasn’t (yet) been found culpable, but I’ll be as disgusted and disillusioned with the British justice system as you will if she doesn’t get a lengthy prison sentence. She seems to be claiming ignorance at every turn and turning on the waterworks when it suits her but, last I heard, neither ignorance nor crying are a defence in UK law.
Calling someone a criminal before they're convicted of something could actually help to get them found not guilty.

The same with Grenfell Inquiry , There are people responsible for the Deaths on that night and they were also pardoned , and slip away without justice being dealt . Her PR team have very carefully coached her. Sadly, this is an inquiry hearing, not a trial. The KC is walking on egg shells, he has to be polite and not ask certain questions because of parliamentary privilege, in other words he's got a hand tied hehind his back. Vennels still has a plumb job, didn't you know ? So just a few crocodile tears and this will all go away, BUT her disdain and contempt for her victims is still there, just under the surface.

Paula’s idea of being a CEO. It’s all Susan’s fault or I don’t recall. She’s bereft of understanding right and wrong, competent versus incompetent and scepticism versus blind faith.
Watching her, promoted way beyond her capability. She might have made a nice server in a corner sweet shop. But even then, if she accidentally sold poison to customers, somehow she’d know it wasn’t her fault, it was everyone else that failed to check the label on the tin. And justify that she kept selling it regardless.
It’s when she said that’s not how I read/interpreted an email. When asked how else it could be interpreted she struggled to provide a coherent response.

i think her strategy at the post office & afterwards & this week is to exasperate those trying to hold her to account. that's not being flippant, either - i think it's a quite conscious technique on her part. considering the power she sought over others, it's incredibly abusive, too
there was a great example of this yesterday. several months prior to the inquiry she was asked to reflect on what she could have done differently. she submitted two witness statements to the inquiry - total about 800 pages, but avoided addressing this question, instead suggesting this info could be got out of her during her testimony. it was yesterday, 42 minutes into the official feed. the kc refers her to page 774, paragraph 1800, if you can find a transcript. she says she's 'keen' to answer these questions about what she would have differently ... when i give my evidence to the inquiry - on page 774 of her statement!

Anyone stating "I don't remember", "I don't recall" or "I was not involved in the conversation" so many times is guilty by just doing so or grossly incompetent and should be held accountable therefor for it either way. Executives and managers should be fired, charged on grounds of suspension as the postal workers were. Its utterly disgusting!
I've known plenty of CEO's in far less "prestigious" positions- all have either excellent memories or make sure to keep notes, especially when it relates to legal proceedings of the business they are in charge of. This isn't some matter of personal virtue- it's practically a necessity if you're an earnest businessperson. Anyone who truly couldn't recall this much from their tenure in a role is, as you say, grossly incompetent, but I think we all know she wasn't *that* incompetent, just truly malicious and self-serving.
More focus on PR than justice. Can't look bad. Can't seem guilty. Hard days.
All the PO people in this inquiry talk exactly the same way. They can remember with perfect accuracy anything that suits them, even from many years back.
Anything unpalatable, even with an email confirming it, and they forget.

It was a hard watch but I watched these past two days of Vennels giving evidence and I cannot believe the numerous times she apologised for saying something in writing then stating she didn’t mean that. Her witness statement, scrutinised by her lawyers, had a number of inaccuracies which was rightly questioned by the KC. Her answers were, at times, all over the place going off at a tangent in a garbled confused manner. Still she wont be receiving Christmas cards from a number of her previous colleagues.
Absolutely shocking. She needs to be held accountable. She was paid millions during her time as CEO.

It is so galling watching her afforded many years of ‘reflection’ and now publicly able to pontificate about her recollection of events. She’s minted, dripping in wealth. Her colleagues too. All the while there are postmasters being offered pitiful amounts of compensation that take years to be calculated. Vennells and her team should be in prison. Post masters deserves millions EACH in compensation.

It would be quicker if she just told us what she does remember. Next can we have an enquiry into who the devil appointed her - and why? This bishop manque with no functioning memory, who was never at meetings or part of any conversation relating to the organisation she was supposed to be managing - what did she appear to offer.
Never forget, Starmer knew about this and about Jimmy Saville when he was head of CPS and failed to act on both.
One thing i hope from this debacle is that the UK post office should not be given powers to prosecute anyone and if any criminal acts in post office should only be handled by UK Police only, But we will see

How can a highly paid head of a company ‘Not Know’ or ‘Can’t Remember’ anything that May incriminate her?

Given her former position as Post Office CEO, her capacity for recollection of key events during her tenure appear to be poor at best. I would have thought that this would have been one of the most important qualifications in securing the job from the outset ? I therefore can only conclude, that this woman is clearly 'Lying through her teeth' & will do anything to avoid what ought to result in a Custodial Sentence.
I believe that she should be prosecuted about where she has misled the attempts by the postmasters to get justice - and also if her memory and cognisance is so poor, the salary and bonuses she received should be returned by selling her assets. For this woman to be a Anglican Priest must also call into question their vetting procedures?
So she fake cries.. Cant feel very regretful. As she new she was throwing other ppls lives away. To avoid "headlines" Let the public decide the punishment.. But its the same everywhere in the world.
