It's a part to cheap out on within reason. You don't need to spend a lot on modular cables, high efficiency and so on. But it's also not one you want to buy dirt cheap. I have a very nice PSU but the one prior to that was a very average low-mid range model that ran for 9 years before being electively replaced. It's still running in someone else's system and is probably 14 years old at this point.
There are a lot of PSUs out there which are grossly over specified for consumer PC use and priced accordingly. If you can get them on offer, great, but otherwise there are limited use cases.

I've been using the same case for 25 years. It's very modular in that all the front connectors are generic connectors you used to be able to buy at Radio Shack. So they are easily swappable by buying internal connection cables.

Cases can always be reused in future builds, so if you're planning on keeping it for a while, I'd say it's worth spending more as long as it's within reason. But AIOs are definitely not worth it because once they fail, the whole unit has to be chucked, whereas a fan replacement on an air cooler is relatively cheap.

People forget that old cases, if you find the right one, are just as good as new ones. I’ve always preferred the horizontal cases so that’s what I looked for a few years ago when I built my computer, I used an antec fusion case and surprisingly the case peripherals still work if you use LCD smarty and code your own driver for the volume knob (if anyone has an official driver for it please point me to it.) the case is great and provides a separated compartment for the psu, you might have to angle grinder out one of the supports to fit a big new gpu but i rigged a 2070 in mine and it’s been great for years. Horizontal desktops need to make a resurgence. A monitor stand and a computer? All you need right in front of you, plus it still looks sleek and modern with the aluminum front. Only thing is I paid $250 for mine and had a hard time justifying that purchase when I was 19. But I did it and have not regretted it

  • @Vidar93

Honestly solid advice.. I cant tell you how many PC's ive built over the years that either have a 250$ case and then lower tier cpu/gpus or they will get cpu/gpu with no plans to run it past stock specs and then have a 200-300$ liquid cooler on there when it would have been sooo much better to put that towards a better cpu or gpu.. There are also a lot of solid cases for 100$ or under, and I totally understand wanting to have an aesthetically pleasing build but if you want it specifically for gaming are you going to be happier when playing if you have a nice looking case or if you're running modern games smoothly.
The other one I potentially would add is monitors.. I see so many people splurging for monitors that they either don't need the specs of or are just a bad deal. A big one is 4k monitors and its normally either getting like a 27" 60hz monitor for the same price as a 32" 144 hz 2k or spending like 500$ on a 32" 160hz 4k when again with either they are not going to be watching 4k content and either going to be bottlenecking their preformance and still playing at 1080/1440 or don't even have a stronf enough system to play at 1440 because of how much the monitor was.. I have seriously had to almost redo every list people have sent to me because of out or wack specs or paraphernalia.
The way I see it as far as planned upgrades, look for components that will be the most cost effective and performance effective to replace. Its a lot easier to add another 1tb of ssd space than it is to drop another 450 for a graphics card 1 tier above your current one..

I don't understand how motherboards have gotten so expensive, they should be cheaper than ever with how many components have been integrated into modern CPUs. The way I see it, if you're spending over £50 on a motherboard then you are being ripped off, the most I ever spent on one was £70, and that was for a skt 775 board with every feature under the sun that overclocked like a champ and still works to this day, and that's before RAM controllers and PCI-E were were built in to the CPU, when it still had 2 IDE sockets, floppy socket, 6x SATA, a built in gpu (actual on the board gpu, not an igpu inside the cpu). Modern motherboards are a scam, if I could get all that for £70 then there's no excuse for modern boards that are basically just sockets connected to the CPU that has all those features I mentioned built in to the CPU. Expensive Motherboard = scam.

@@talibong9518 Not to bat for the corps, but there are some excuses. Trace routing matters a lot when you're running at the frequencies and parallels of. It's to the point with DDR5 where you have to actually dive deep into the motherboard nerd specs to find out if it's daisy chain or T-topology and how good it is to even begin guessing if your four sticks of RAM will boot much less run near the rated speeds. The ever-decreasing voltages require high quality VRM components to keep the ripple as stable as possible. That's why you'll see so many phases where three was more than enough (when CPUs ran at 1.5V). But I'm sure a very large amount of it is just "charge more because people will pay."
If online inflation calculators are to be believed, your $70 for a board in 2001 would need to be $125 today. So they're not *that* far off, the USD has just gotten weak.

I wouldn't reuse a really old case even if it was totally functional, I feel like a new case is important to make your new build actually feel new and not just like you upgraded your existing build. It's not just for aesthetics, it affects your perception as well and you're likely to be more satisfied with the new build that way.
A new case doesn't have to cost a lot though. You can get sub-$50 cases that have most of the bells and whistles like mesh front panel and tempered glass and are easy to build in.
Cheap cases have gotten a lot better. My first build's case was made of thin sheet metal, creaky acrylic and shiny plastic, it looked, felt and sounded cheap but cheap cases nowadays actually feel like decent quality and are a hell of a lot easier to build in (and cable manage) than old cases tended to be, which is a bonus.

You cheap out on the inverse of your priorities. Most here people who want to build a pc want gaming performance. So priorities would look like Gpu, enough cpu so you dont bog the gpu, power supply and ram to feed it, a monitor to see, storage for games, a motherboard to plug everything in, and then you need to look at a case to shove it in and a way to cool it and finally peripherals to use with it.
You can move anything up/ down like one spot depending on specific needs but beyond that you fast approach more show than go

  • @stinkycheese804

Yeah I've been reusing cases for a very long time, though some of the early ATX had poor airflow so had to cut out extra fan mounts and get rid of, or put hole(s) in the front bezel as well. Normally I convert them to filtered intake.
Cooling, I would not use the stock cooler, considering you can often find deals on coolers with 120mm or so fan size for less than $30, which are good to at least 120W TDP. I'd sooner get a less fancy motherboard and I don't really care how stylish it looks, as I don't bother with open-view, clear side panel cases. I do have a couple but at the moment, they were out of the rotation for building replacement systems.
