Half-Life Speedrun Comparison: 1st Ever Vs 2nd Ever (

  • Identified errors:
Time of the door opening was used as a landmark to judge how much footage was missing from c1a0's (start of Anomalous Materials) start. I assumed that Dopefish's run was not missing footage, but my own recording would reveal he also cut out some time in c1a0. Add on an extra 0.25s for both runs.
Forgot to split at c1a2c. (Office Complex freezer map)
Two extra frames were somehow added to Dopefish's time during c2a1b/c2a1c. This explains the discrepancy reported at the end.
-think.circle-'s second c1a3 segment (entering the first map of We've Got Hostiles through vents) starts four frames earlier than Dopefish's. The split difference was actually 0.133, not 0.2.
Because think.circle left the loading screen in for c2a3e (last map of Apprehension) and my regular "tells" for loading screens weren't applicable, c2a3e segments were lined up so that the light fixture came into view in both recordings at the same time. This was done on the assumption that the cutscenes in the two recordings would match up with one another perfectly, but apparently they did not. -think.circle-'s reported time was 35.2s, but it was actually 36.85s, which adds 1.65s onto the run. After fixing this error, a new time of 55:19.150 was found, which is 0.617s longer than the predicted time.
    Extra notes:
Most splits were identified by the HUD reappearing, the ammo display changing to or from 0, the viewmodel disappearing or moving downward significantly, textures suddenly are offset differently, or the camera moving too far in a single frame.
Timing of events and sound varies widely between the two recordings after defeating Nihilanth. think.circle appears to have left in the loading screen before c5a1 (the Gman cutscene map). Dopefish's recording was lengthened by me so that the door in the train car opens in both recordings at the same time, while also keeping the starts of the green flashes in sync, though nothing between those points is in sync.

This must've taken an amazing amount of work to create, but it turned out great! Was very interesting to see how closely me and -think.circle- were performing, with the exception for the new tricks I used in my run. I used way more segments than he did (106 vs 42), and tried to figure out my own way after reaching each section (so I didn't have a full run planned ahead of time). I had obviously seen his run before, since it was what inspired me to make one of my own, but I don't remember using it as a reference for each section.
I think SDA added a new rule at the time because of me using soo many segments, adding a +0.5s penalty for each, if I recall correctly. I used mousewheel for timing my bhops, while newer runs eventually started using bhop scripts.
My proudest tricks were at 10:48 with using a headcrab to boost me up on a crate in the freezer, 25:53 where I managed to get an vortigaunt to open the door ahead of time, 34:45 the sewer pipe boost (even if it turned out not to save time in the end), 46:16 angering the guard to open the door faster, and finally the Xen jump that took me probably a hundred tries to pull off at 48:54 (even if that one was discovered by -think.circle- to begin with).
I remember discussing strats for upcoming runs on the SDA forums, such as using snarks to boost up on at 37:46 instead of trip mines, but I personally never attempted another Half-Life run. But all credits should go to -think.circle- which inspired a whole generation of runners at the time.
Oh, and the reason why I start my run at 93 health is because I was fiddling around outside the lobby, while waiting for Barney to open up, and ended up taking minor fall damage :D
You can still get all the demos I used for my recording off the old archive link:

I can't imagine living in the times when half life 2 was not out. Such a crucial piece of my existence.

Funny how neither of them use the single-direction bhop method (the one where you just strafe into one direction and move your mouse into the direction and back to keep yourself on track), and just use classic quake style bhop. The single-direction one is a little faster, requires less space and looks cooler, but is arguably harder to pull off. Both of them also didn't know about the trigger skips and NPC pushing techniques that are a given and so widely known even regular people use them.

@@Pinsplash That seems *really* odd, considering GoldSrc is just modified idTech 2 and demos for sharing speedruns were a thing since idTech 1. Though I guess Half-Life's more seamless level design rather than hard transitions probably made it hard to determine where demos should start and end.

it is really odd but these are the first speedruns even according to the runners of the time

Don't remember the reason exactly for why Half-Life didn't have runs prior to -think.circle-, but he was definitely the first one to post a run for the game. Think it had something to do with the difficulties of capturing the footage from the game with several demo recordings and loading areas. I think I ended up exporting the demos as screenshots for each frame, and then doing a separate recording for the audio before putting them together.
Either that, or nobody thought of making a run for a game without an easy way to measure the time, and without simple level structure.

I remember when the think.circle's speedrun appeared. The gaming sites wrote about that, and it was mindblowing: someone completed the game in less than an hour! It was a trouble to download such a large video file back then, so I left the downloading at work for the weekend. When we watched the speedrun with the friends we didn't belive it's real and without cheats - we couldn't repeat most tricks and knew nothing about bhop. But skipping the entire On a rail level with well placed mines was awesome.
