I’d be really curious if you did a deep dive on what specifically your dad didn’t like about RPGs. Was it the gameplay? The themes? The length of them? Super curious.

I think you are a bit older then me. And I'm surprised your dad didn't like it. But Pokémon was my childhood. My very first Pokémon game was Pokémon Yellow. And I also played it to death. I didn't had a super gameboy but I still had a old fashion original gameboy. And I'm still a big Pokémon fan to this day. I can't imagine a life without Pokémon. Ok I don't wear the merchandise anymore like I did when I was 10. But I kept buying the latest new Nintendo handheld systems just to play the new Pokémon games. Even till this day. I bought a Nintendo Switch so I could play Pokémon Let's go. And Phantasia was one of my favorite movies as a kid. That's the movie that got me in to classical music. Especially Beethoven. I can talk about Beethoven till I'm blue in the face.

My dad was also the one who introduced me to gaming. We belonged to a lower income family here in the Philippines and in order for people to play video games in the 90s was to rent it on an hourly basis. My dad introduced me to Super Mario in 1992 when I was only 3 years old . He had no interest in gaming but he wanted me to experience what other rich kids enjoy. Sadly, he passed away in 2003 and I will always be thankful to him for introducing me to the amazing world of video games. I also appreciate this channel as it takes me back to the time when my dad bring me around to try new games even though I really had no idea that he's saving up money just for me to play some games on weekends.

We used to rent a console as well in a small arcade, it was like 20 pesos per hour for sega genesis or snes. Me and my cousins would play the whole afternoon, we usually play street fighter II or MK. Good times! Cheers to our parents for giving us an amazing childhood!

Forgive me if this sounds weird Tyler, but your dad reminds me of my mom. My parents divorced when I was a baby and she worked hard for us. She bought a Super Nintendo which we had for several years, then a PS One Mini with the attachable LCD screen in 2001. I played other systems at friend's houses. She couldn't afford much else but she would save up money for quarters and take us to arcades. My dad would also take me to arcades on the weekends we were together to enjoy the games he grew up with (and the ones I liked) but when I was 10 in 1998, he bought me an atomic purple Game Boy Color with Pokemon Yellow and Pokemon Pinball for Christmas. It was a big game changer (pun intended). Not long after I received Pokemon Crystal then the Game Boy Advance. My grandfather retiring from Alcoa here in 2000 took my PC gaming experience from casual to hardcore and he was still tinkering with PC until he passed in 2021 at 85. Anyway, my dad bought me the types of games that you mentioned because I liked them, though he was never interested. He wanted the stuff from the late 70's and the 80's. My Mom, even though she couldn't afford much, enjoyed games with me. Her last favorite system was the Nintendo Wii that she played the crap out of while watching her favorite show The Office until we lost her to cancer in 2011. I've said this before, but thank you for your retro videos. Alot of my childhood recorded on VHS is gone because of greedy family members taking everything and destroying most of it after my grandfather passed. I was so hurt by it that my grandparents showed up in a dream telling me that the good memories I have of them are far more important than the physical items that were lost. Now my dad is the only parent I have left and he plays alot of retro and arcade games through emulation with his grandchildren (my sons). I only hope my mom is watching over the grandkids she didn't meet on this side of the grave (my firstborn and only girl lived 6 months and I have no doubt they're together right now. It's awesome to see you honor your dad and know that you yourself are a father. I can relate to this 100%. We honor those who have gone before by giving a good life to the future of our family. You are doing an awesome job.

I agree, rpgs or Pokemon just sorta annoy me, mainly because my dad forced them so much on me when i was growing up, he was a bethesda fan and a pokemon fan and it sorta just drove me up the wall.
Also i beat Pokemon red, but considering it seems like pokemons story telling can be lazy at times or not changing that much, thats just how i view it, like Red felt similar to future releases, and i just realized it wasnt for me. Since it didnt feel like they were doing much i cared about at the end.

Also hate Pokémon games, grew up in the 90s so we played the same stuff Tyler. Your dad had awesome taste in games. I loved my Sega cd, had turbo but not a lot of games while it was released. I never got the Jaguar but your dad was smart and bought them as they died out in stores. I wish I had the sense to hold on to more games but I always traded all my games for that next hot system. Fave Sega cd games, Road avenger, Silpheed, Snatcher, Willy Beamish, Sonic cd

Aside from Pokémon, it seems your dad had a keen sense for games he didn't favor. His preference to steer clear of being a Sega enthusiast is understandable. While I'm not particularly fond of JRPGs myself, Pokémon, especially the early games, remains a notable exception. My affection for Pokémon endures to this day. Indeed, your dad's preferences were almost impeccable, leaning more towards Nintendo.

It always cracks me up when I hear your dad's eternal hatred for RPG video games. Reminds me of how I annoyed my dad when I played Battlefront with him as a kid and all I wanted to do was explore the worlds instead of fighting the enemies. "Quit exploring the fields and come fight!" It cracks me up every time I hear "he would just shake his head". My first console was (and still is, since I still have it) my Dad's old Sega Genesis. Even though I was born in 1997, I got the classic hand-me-down treatment when it came to looking for a video game console to have in my room. With Sonic 2 and Mortal Kombat being the provided games (still have them to this day), I was hooked to the point that I still occasionally play them to this day. As stated, they still work just fine, even after being briefly submerged in a flood a few years ago! Kinda looks weird (but satisfying) playing it on a 4K tv without special convertors.

This is such a cool idea for a video, man. My father hated games in general, just couldn't understand why someone would play them at all. As a gaming father, I never thought I would have those same feelings myself, but I'm finding that I loathe certain games and, more accurately, certain types of games. My son is a huge Minecraft junkie, getting into the dirt of the game so to speak, and the more I play it with him, the more I end up like your father on the recliner shaking my head. I'm much more of a JRPG person myself, and I'm trying to find ways to "turn" him in the right direction lol. It's tough being a dad, as you know. Great vid!

To the best of my knowledge, my father only ever played 2 video games: Kings Quest 2, and Marble Madness. We got a Tandy 1000EX computer in the mid 80s and these were the first two games we got. My dad, brother, and myself, worked our way through KQ2 together, and he seemed to really enjoy that. Marble Madness utterly broke him though. He could get to the last level, but could not pass it, and it made him really angry. So angry, that I am pretty sure he never touched a never video game ever again. This is one of the many things I wished I had asked him about before he passed, I’m pretty sure my memory serves me well but I’ve always wanted to confirm it.
Thanks for posting this, even though video games weren’t a thing my dad and I really shared together beyond that brief glimmer in time, I find you processing your own emotions and memories of dad to be cathartic for similar purposes myself. My brother and I had vastly different tastes but he was the person who got me into gaming ha ah ha. He would constantly poop (not literally) on my tastes as they developed 😅

My dad hates pay-to-win and the only fighting games he is okay with playing are Super Smash Bros. (he's intimidated by long combos and complex inputs). Dad also avoids games where you can easily cramp your hands by doing ridiculous control inputs. But he does like racing games, LEGO games, business simulators and DOOM and he dabbles a bit in Pokémon as well, given that it involves wireless battles and he has a solid team ready. He is also fine with the Star Fox games' multiplayer, even though I am the best player in my family by far.

My dad didn't like video games, but we bonded over comedy, whether it be stand-up or movies. I've come around to some musical comedians, but back in the 00's, we groaned every time one would come on Premium Blend on Comedy Central. We'd just tune out and maybe talk during their set. We loved George Carlin.

Ill never forget the time my poor income family got a sega. We played it for a few months then sony released the Playstation. At the time the Playstation I belive sold for $200 dollars. That was a lot of money back in the 90s. My dad brought this game home for us one day. My dad was a truck driver and to make up for all the time he was on the road he would bring back a game for us. One day he brought home grand theft auto for PS1. Needless to say when we played it he heard the vocals of the pedestrians and said "What the Fck did that just say?" Our response was but dad you bought it for us?!? He told us well just dont let your mother hear that game turn the volume down.. What a Legendary father 😂😂

R.E sewer shark.. my dad was exactly the same when he bought me the mega cd on release and realised how cobra command played ( " Tanks in the canyon, drive em out")... It shows how crappy it was when his favourite game was sol feace. Although I didn't admit it as a sega fanboy I was very happy I had talked my younger brother into asking for a SNES around this time 😂.

Top 10 games my dad hated:
    EVERY GAME
Loved my dad but he just did not get gaming. We bonded over lots of things but gaming was not one of them. 😂
We are around the same age and it sounds like we lost our dad around the same time. Tough stuff for sure. I would love to see a video of your dad’s most loved games if you don’t already have one made!

Anything turn based i hate it gives me anxiety, i like to be in control of my player at all times if its action rpg id play it but thats as far as it goes…I know theres a lot of good games im missing out on but hey thats me…Bring on more Zelda games 🙏🏽I’d say Fantasia would have to be the best from Dads worsts picks

That’s why I prefer Elder Scrolls style RPG. You get to explore freely but you still get all the RPG elements. Turn based was fun when I was younger. Sometimes turn based is alright if the story is really captivating like an old dungeon crawler, but overall I agree they feel to limited.

I would agree with his list 95%, except for Pokemon. I also don't like cute-bubbly anime stuff, but I played the heck out of Red version on my Purple GB Color back in 1998 when i was 16. In fact about a couple of months ago my 11 year old kid wanted to try it out and played it through on GB Emulators on his Nintendo DSi and loved it.
